It's Fall and Y'all Know What That Means!!!!

It's kimchi time babey!!!!!!!!!

This is my 4th year making kimchi; I wasn't going to this year but I saw a really attractive cabbage at the store so on a whim I got the ingredients. I use Maangchi's vegetarian kimchi recipe (linked below), if you want to try making kimchi this recipe I feel is very straight forward and easy to follow:

I use the vegetarian version mostly because fermented shrimp is very expensive here. If you can get your hands on some gochugaru and napa cabbage the rest of the ingredients should be at a standard US grocery store.

I've never been able to get daikon radish this time of year so I usually experiment with replacements. Last year I used French radishes and it was still good, this year I'm trying rutabaga.

Every year I end up messing up a step, though it always still turns out good (and honestly even if it flops and isn't great to eat straight, you can use it for stew or kimchi fried rice). Let's hope this is the year I got it all right.

The rough with the smooth

They were rounded and plump, a soft golden brown with an inviting sheen. Dean wanted to touch them. He wanted to stroke them with his fingertips, and then let the palms of his hands sink deep into their softness. His mouth watered. Perfect.

And they were on offer. Dean picked up the pack of brioche buns and dropped them into his grocery basket.

He checked his list, scrawled on the torn off lid of an old ammo box.

“Tomatoes,” he read and continued to mutter, “tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes,” as he scanned the produce laid out before him in waist-height displays, to look like a proper old-fashioned market. The displays even had decorative awnings covering them. “Like it’s gonna rain in here,” Dean mumbled. Although, it was kinda cute, which he could admit to himself, even if he wouldn’t express that opinion to Sam in a million years. He might tell Cas, though.

He found the tomatoes.

“Son of a bitch!”

There was a loud tut behind him and he turned to see a hatchet-faced old harpy glaring, a hairy rutabaga clutched in each hand, as if she might decide to pelt him with them. “This is a family store, young man! Please moderate your language!”

“Sorry, lady.” Dean apologised because he was in a good mood. Although, maybe she really was a harpy and when he was done with the supply run he could gank her.

He turned back to the display of tomatoes and scratched his stubbly jaw. There were plenty of your average-sized, average-coloured, red tomatoes. But there were also little tiny ones. And kinda football-shaped ones - some pretty big and some just weeny little guys. Some were orangey, others yellow. There were even some green - they couldn’t be ripe, could they? Although, there was that movie, ‘Fried Green Tomatoes at…” wherever.

How were you supposed to know which to get? Although…

“Hey!” said Dean, grinning. “Hey, look at you guys!”

Should he be talking to the produce? It wasn’t the craziest thing he’d done - not by a long, long way. And he was in a good mood. Dean reached across the display to pick up one of the biggest tomatoes he’d ever seen. It was heavy. He threw it up a little way and it landed with a satisfying smack against his palm - about the weight and feel of a generously-sized grenade. It was the monster of the tomato world, the overlord of all other tomatoes.

He waved it at the tiny football-shaped crowd, threateningly. “Tremble before your God!” One of the little ones, plucked between Dean’s finger and thumb, defied the giant, in a suitably squeaky voice. “I’m gonna take you down, Tomzilla, if it’s the last thing I do!”

Rambling thoughts while rewatching Episode 4x12 “Swipe Left”

My 42 years on this planet told me that Tom would be a douchey religious dude that thinks any and all queers are going to hell – I have quite literally heard it my entire life

I do agree with the Rabbi on not listening to outside forces

TK thought that when Carlos told him that he was married – it was the last of the “difficult conversations”.

Like I said before – If your partner says there is a gaping chasm – there is one.

When can we stop using comas for why we don’t communicate? There have been 26 episodes since the last coma. Just fucking talk.

Carlos’ tone is very dismissive in the kitchen – I get that he likes to avoid things, but that was really trying to avoid it. Not just about the kids thing – but about TK telling him that he feels a rift growing due to their lack of communication on the subject.

I really strongly dislike Mitch Geralds, his wife too but he is just so instantly punchable.

He is lucky he met the 126 post Owen’s punching people stage

He reminds me of a creepy dude that I know – appearance and personality.

No fucking thank you on 8 kids – also especially not with that super douche. However – at least he is up front with his preferred spawn count.

I love that she asked on how they would feel about her working after marriage – For her – that is such a huge part of who she is.

Are people still that nuts about Harry Potter? I know that they had to movies & the stupid game that is/coming out, but are people still as into it as that dude was?

So, do we think he really does dog rescue crowd sourcing or did he just google image a dog with deformities for compassion points?

How many days passed in this episode? There were 4 dates in one day, right?

So the training was 1-2 days (I am guessing based on clothing) they probably started the training sessions that shift – so that would be day 1, then day 2 was with Tarlos.

Then the dates – all 4 in one day makes sense – but would it really be that easy to set all 4 up with a 1-day notice?

Plus the officiant day before the shift

Then the shift where they commiserate over dating issues

Leading into the pregnant lady rescue

Then Tarlos talk to their parents – another day (Could be the same day as the shift of commiseration)

Then the next day when they talk at the end

So at least a week total?

This talk in the bunk room makes me very happy that I haven’t had to date since 2007.

Dating rules are fucking stupid and I LOVE NANCY for that.

She is so cute though when he texts her – but not as cute as she is with Yusef.

At first, I thought that they set her up with the guys and chaperoned for the one they set up – until Owen fell in love & Mateo made a new friend.

This is among the best advice that Owen has given throughout the series

I like that throughout the episode neither of them doubts the love of or for the other.

The only irritating thing for me was Andrea telling Carlos it wasn’t true when he told her that he had only had a relationship with Gabriel until 2 years ago. – That isn’t for her to decide or determine. I would love to get to explore that a bit more – but with Gabriel

I do think that my spec fic was pretty right in the big ways (other than the very self-indulgent venue burning).

I like that we got a confirmation that Paul & Asha are together

Babe - you could have bought a cat – it would be a pet you could pet & wouldn’t cause too many nightmares.

Also – I don’t love that impression either, but I love that they are comfortable being dorks together.

The closing scene in this is the growth I needed to see in Carlos. This was him actually speaking, something that he was truly worried about (he even said as much to his mother in why he hadn’t talked about it before), but doing it anyway. Telling TK that he didn’t want kids, may not ever want them. He knew that TK might not be ok with it, but he still did it.

Through the episode, it felt to me that TK was trying to come to terms with his life picture changing, leading him to the conclusion that, for him, being with Carlos is the more important part of the picture, and he was ok with that. It just took time and thinking.

Lets hope that Carlos can continue having the hard talks instead of deflecting from them.

sudden random thoughts of the quagmire triplets + hector and the widdershins family craving jack-o'-lanterns a day or two before halloween night, in their first year of living together when things are mostly calm:

duncan: carves a question mark into his pumpkin, much to the shock and confusion to everyone; he also carves a traditional jack-o'-lantern face into a turnip, knowing that jack-o'-lanterns originally used root vegetables (like turnips, rutabaga, and beets) instead.

isadora: carves a crow into her pumpkin, which took a lot of time and effort because she wanted it to be realistic as possible and had to ask hector for help at times; doesn't carve into a turnip but she did stole one and skinned it and ate it raw.

quigley: carves two set of realistic eyes into his pumpkin, or what were supposed to be realistic eyes (they turned out more cartoon-like); carves two dots and a [tooth] smile into his turnip, and sticks a cob-pipe into it and claims it's a scarecrow's head.

fiona: carves a traditional jack-o'-lantern face into her pumpkin, and carved another one with a mushroom on it; doesn't carve into a turnip but a rutabaga, and she carves a very poor attempt of a simple ghost face (O.O) into it, which she sets on the kitchen counter.

fernald: he never liked carving pumpkins even back when having hands and thus watches the others have their fun; that said he does has fun poking the pumpkin guts with his hooks, much to the humorous horror and shock of everyone else.

hector: carves a owl and a cat into his pumpkin; doesn't carve into a turnip but does cook the untouched turnips into turnip fries after finding a decent recipe to attempt (everyone ended up enjoying the fries despite it sounding odd).

widdershins: hollows a pumpkin completely and carves a window and door so quigley's scarecrow head has a home; carves a traditional jack-o'-lantern face in a turnip and hangs it on a string and it scares everyone due to it being in the air.

How to make Keto Rutabaga Fries with Fry Sauce Recipe | BEST

Put in some seasoned green tomato, onion, sweet potato, and rutabaga wedges with the last of the boneless chicken thighs to roast, and feeling optimistic about how it'll come out as a supper. Might make some yellow rice with duck fat, saizon, rice vinegar, and garlic salt. Would be nice to cut up some diced carrot to boil in with the rice, and cut up some raw sweet onion to mix in after. I'd love to cut up more tomato for it too, but I only have one left so I'm also tempted to be sparing.

Ugh, just think of it tho......I do miss salvadorian fried rice......haven't had the good stuff since we moved away from the restaurant me and wifey went to for our first date.
