BOOK REVEIW (SPOILERS AHEAD):
my dark vanessa by kate elizabeth russsell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This books is a tsunami. A hurricane. Huge hurling waves of emotions that move through the words and pages.
It has to be one of the best books I have read.
But it isn’t for everyone.
For someone who used to reading dark material, nothing gets darker than this book.
It makes you feel layers of anger, anxiety, depression, and overall sadness.
Nothing about this novel is happy or bright.
But it becomes a favorite for me, because no other book has pulled out such a raw feeling and reaction.
The reader enters the mind of the main character, Vanessa, in both the present and the past. We witness the beginning and end of a relationship between her and her much older English teacher. What is marketed and seems to be a forbidden love is actually a abusive, damaging, crippling to both Vanessa and the reader.
“Readers live a thousand lives”.
This a quote that I think of when I reflect back upon my experience reading any book, especially this one. The author’s writing is so powerful and emotional that you feel like your in Vanessa’s shoes or simply a silent witness to this story unfold.
I thought I was reading a love story until the red flags began to appear one by one. The relationship is blurry, but as you continue to read you notice that it is Vanessa’s coping mechanism, to romanticize the relationship that in truth is abusive. It’s a nonstop cycle of abuse that lasts for years until she is forced to face the truth due to the damaging consequences it has left throughout her life.
The relationship between, Vanessa and Strane, is just a constant cycle of abuse: from the physical to emotional. Strane is a master manipulator who constantly gaslights and controls every aspect of the relationship. He uses her and discards her, only to return and use her as an enabler for his behavior. It evolves into a poisonous relationship of dependency: for Strane it’s to enable his pedophila, for Vanessa it’s to cope with or even deny the existence of the endless trauma. It’s hard to explain, but none the less for Vanessa, this man is a poison that creeps into every aspect in her life damaging her soul, her relationships, her emotions and thoughts, and future. He is a cancer that has taken root and continues to spread even if he is cut out. This destructive relationship finally ends when Strane kills himself after multiple women speak out about his inappropriate behavior. Finally leaving Vanessa to confront her mountain of trauma.
To be honest every page of this book is powerful leaving me to experience raw emotions. Every word left feelings of disturbance, disgust, anxiety, and overwhelming sadness. This resulted in endless tears, and constant pause while reading in order to digest and process what I just read.
It’s a book that leaves you questioning about everything.
Especially with Russell’s writing technique within the book, I described it as blurry, as Vanessa convinced herself that she experienced a forbidden love instead of abuse. This is perfectly summed up in the quote: “I just really need it to be a love story….because if it isn’t a love story, then what is it?”. When you read to see that clash as Vanessa desperately clutches onto this coping mechanism. An example of that can be seen when she is distressed by how no one around her acknowledges her relationship with Strane, though many people witness it and tell her it’s abusive, she refuses to believe it because they don’t see in the context she desires in both the present and past. She wants the people around her to see how much of a monster he is, but her coping mechanisms become an obstacle because she refuses to see herself as a victim. This makes her an unreliable narrator in some shape, but it also allows the story to unfold and allows the reader to witness Vanessa’s development and her process of confronting and dealing with all her trauma and abuse she experienced.
This writing is so beautiful and entrapping as both the reader and Vanessa revisit the relationship. I definitely would recommend this novel. I am in the mists of rereading it a second time which allows me to unearth and understand the themes, the characters, and the language that the author uses and explores; it only adds to reasons why the book has become a favorite of mine.
And to anyone who experienced what Vanessa had experienced, you are the strongest person in the world.
