as a belarusian i can say dally is so slavic coded like something about him exudes it both in his description/appearance and just his general personality
in my head he’s russian from his dads side and hearing arguments in the house he learned the craziest combos of curse words from him growing up. and they stuck with him so he just mumbles it under his breath at any inconvenience. everyone’s like “idk wtf dally is saying but it sounds scary” especially with that deep ass voice. this is canon to meee

[An interview of the St. Louis Blues players. The question is, "Who is the most famous person in your phone's contacts?"
Dmitri: Torpo
Torpo: I have three. First one: Vladimir Tarasenko. Second one: Ivan Barbashev. And third one: Pavel Buchnevich.

The Wall's Monochromatic Girl Gang. I was going to make a joke about what, exactly, they're talking about, but... I shan't.
A few notes:
• Isn't if fun how they're dressed for the same weather? Melisandre's outfit is inspired in this one Hanfu I keep seeing on Pinterest, though I don't know which dynasty it's inspired by. Song? Anyway Asshai is further east from Yi Ti, so chinese inspiration makes sense for me. (In terms of historical accuracy, we would be wearing Ming Dynasty inspired clothes, which is what I imagine for northern Yi Ti tbh). Beware the Arcane Asshai'i magicks of the Ye Olde Push Up Bra.
• I've been bouncing back and forth with Inuit-inspired or Siberian-inspired clothes for the Free-folk. Siberian/Eastern Russian clothes makes more sense in terms of the Slavic-inspired North continuity, but I guess I seeing too much of these giant baby-carrying Inuit hoodies and thought they looked fun. Val uses it to carry Gilly's baby on. occasion. It was originally meant to be a gift for Dalla.
• Val is actually pretty tall, Melisandre is just like. A giant. Originally Val was blushing (because of the cold) but that got weirdly romantic and I cannot handle shipping Mel with anyone other than Selyse, so yeah. Also afaik we don't have any indication that Val is a spearwife, but I wanted her to hold something, so she can at least carry a spear around. Is a free folk spear supposed to be this size? This question will haunt me for eternity.

i love headcanoning that dally ran away from russia so i offer you
russia tends to be wicked cold. like,..freezing. and at the time dally didn’t know much about how to dress for american weather since he kinda just heard america rented to be colder (not taking the fact that america is huge into account-he was young and stupid) so when he gets to texas (i headcanon he went to texas and then oklahoma) he was FLABBERGASTED because wdym it’s 100 degrees outside?
dally totally makes fun of the gang fir being cold in like-65 degree weather because he’s used to the harsh russian chill and he’s laughing his ass off

In 1959, he was discharged from active duty into the Marine Corps Reserve, then flew to Europe and defected to the Soviet Union. He lived in Minsk, Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic, married a Russian woman named Marina, and had a daughter. In June 1962, he returned to the United States with his wife, and eventually settled in Dallas, Texas, where their second daughter was born.
Oswald shot and killed Kennedy on November 22, 1963 (at age 24)
Over the course of four years, from age 20 to 24, he defected to the ussr, got married, had a daughter, moved back to the US, had another daughter, and killed the president. I may have squandered my youth. I haven't even killed a senator

Libraries and Adult Lonliness
As we all know, making friends as adults is hard. And while the internet has made it easier to make friends with people around the world, actually meeting people you can meet with on a regular basis and just hang out with us tough. The common answer to meeting new people is to find people who are interested in the same stuff as you. As such, finding places to meet new people who may have similar interests to you is important. And that’s why I think the library is a great resource!
As a children’s librarian, one of the things I try to point out to parents when they come in to sign their kids up for the library is that we offer adult programs too. Obviously we have book clubs - my library has 4 different book clubs for people who read different types of books. I’ve posted about it before with knitting/crochet circles. But for people who have or want to explore different interests, and meet new people via that new interest, you may want to check your local library to see their programming. For example:
Hiking: Many libraries offer things like hiking kits. These can be things such as maps for local trails, hiking sticks, a water resistant backpack, binoculars, bird guides, and the like. But some libraries having hiking clubs, such as the Poughkeepsie Public Library Distruct in NY.
Language Learning: Many libraries have access to language learning platforms such as Rosetta Stone or Mango Languages. But many other have dedicated classes where adults can come and learn languages. If you’re in L.A. county, the public library offers classes in beginner Russian, Chinese, Korean, Italian, Armenian, etc!
Music: there are many libraries that have maker spaces where you can go and record music. There’s one in the Newark Library and at a branch of the Brooklyn library. There are also ones that allow you to check out instruments. But there are also ones where you can receive free music lessons, such as the Dallas Public Library (this program was online during the pandemic but is now also offered in person!)
youtube
I could keep going.
Singing, dancing, theater, yoga, sketch comedy, creative writing, RC Cars, foraging, cemetery tour groups, jewelry making, baking, woodworking, painting, etc. If you have a niche interest or would like to get into a niche interest, there is a chance your library has had or will have a program about it. And if you’re looking to meet new people, it is a great place to start.

In August [2020], the Senate Intelligence Committee reported in exhaustive detail how Russia sowed division in the United States and sought to meddle in the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump. Immediately, Republicans and Democrats battled over whether the Trump campaign had engaged in a “criminal conspiracy” with Russia, or “collusion,” or “cooperation,” or established ties”—or whether, as the White House claimed, Trump was the victim of a massive liberal conspiracy. Years after 2016, Russian election interference continues to reap dividends for Moscow by turning American against American.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is particularly adept at psychological warfare because he has been practicing it for decades. He learned the art of destabilizing his opponents from the Stasi, East Germany’s secret police. Russia now uses the same techniques. However, it not only targets individuals; it torments entire countries. [...] The East German secret police developed a method known as "Zersetzung" or “decomposition” to stamp out rebellion without the use of overt force. The idea was to chip away at a dissident’s sanity so that he would lose the will to resist, or in the words of a Stasi guide, “[provoke] and [enforce] internal conflicts and contradictions within hostile-negative forces that fragment, paralyze, disorganize, and isolate” the opponent. The first step in a campaign was to identify the target’s weak spots—health, family, finances—then strike them over and over. [...] In recent years, Russia has reportedly used the methods of decomposition against individual journalists and diplomats. Putin’s real innovation has been to weaponize "Zersetzung" against countries. [...] Russia seeks to weaken a foreign adversary from the inside, paralyzing its ability to resist. It partners with a range of allies, such as oligarchs and journalists, and uses a diverse toolbox, including propaganda and cyber attacks. Moscow begins by locating the target country’s weakest point, whether it’s an ethnic, religious, or partisan cleavage. Then Russia manufactures a sense of distrust to destroy the social contract. Whereas the Stasi might break into a man’s apartment in the middle of the night and turn on his electric razor—just to freak him out—Moscow uses hackers and trolls to propagate conspiracy theories and cultivate a skepticism of authority.
