Linger/Beyond

As a dancer and artist it is very important to have inspiration, develop your creativity and imagination, become stronger not only physically, but mentally as well. One of the best way to fill yourself with the above mentioned things is to go to dance/theatre performance. This is exactly what I decided to do on Thursday 6th of October 2016 and I have never once regretted going there and watching this amazing dance project called «Linger/beyond», which was held in Pentlad Theatre, Artsdepot.

«Linger/beyond» project had been created by London Studio Centre’s graduated and current students during 3 weeks and the goal of this dance and artistic collaboration was to help students who performed with their choreographic portfolios. The show was consisted of 2 acts, included by 5 completely different choreographic and artistic dance pieces in each act. Every piece had exciting background, story and deep meaning. Performers explored such themes as a space, social existence, male and female duets, exploring possibilities of our bodies, changing of body language, relationships, death, changing of speed/dynamics in dance and how it would look on stage, showing who you are and your inner world through movements. All these things I pointed out, when I was watching dance pieces and it was quite interesting to find out in the brochure, that my thoughts was almost the same with the descriptions and initial ideas of the pieces. Every piece made sense to me, I clearly saw and even felt the concept. In my opinion, choreography and movements were one of the most essential key in understanding what dancers wanted to say to us. The pieces were in style of contemporary, ballet, and as I noticed a little bit of commercial/jazz/modern styles. For example, in pieces named “d=V2a” by dancers Amy Mules, Lawrence Jefferies, Ryan Duncan, Shaun Reidman and “I give (up)” by dancer and also choreographer of this piece Daniel Martin, were elements of commercial styles and it looked unusual and specific, but very interesting to watch, especially in “I give (up)”, where music was quite slow and as for me would suit more for dance in contemporary style. However, all these combinations of different styles made every piece and the whole show extraordinary in choreographic aspect. In addition, choreographers of these dance pieces used a lot of contact improvisations and various partnering duets in order to elaborate more on such a concepts as relationships between male/female or people, our body/skin in order the audience to understand better the idea of a piece, not just see movements. Two more valuable things that made that amazing atmosphere of the whole performance and left me with unforgettable impression, were music and costumes. To begin with costumes, I can say that it was very simple and nothing special at first sight, just regular clothes or dance wear, but that simplicity had little bits of biscuit. That is further confirmation, that you do not need fancy costumes in order to make your performance successful. In piece “Split”(Choreographer: The Milk Co. and dancer: Phoenix Chase-Meares) and “Living skin”(Choreographer: Terilee Christiansen and dancers: Phoenix Chase Meares, Michelle Rose, Danielle Summers, Chloe Eastwood), dancers wore just nude colour underwear, plus red/orange lights and smoke on stage were made it look stunning all together. There were no settings in the whole show, but the main thing was light. It changed depending on theme and movements of the piece, for example, in “Split” lights were red. This agressive color was suited to strong movements of the dancer and the theme, where alpha male was ideal. Last, but not least thing that I would like to mention is wonderful music in each piece of dance. To make performance good it is quite essential to select the right music and it is obvious that choreographers with dancers did long job choosing songs for their pieces. Music was different and strange, from slow to very fast bits, mainly without words. This complemented the movements and concepts of the pieces, made them definitely look more powerful. In occlusion, the “Linger/beyond” project is strong performance with correctly selected combination of movements, acting, music, settings, costumes and concepts and all together it would make anyone feel heebie-jeebies while watching. Bravo.
