"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places

Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.

I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Here's a guide (with links to Find a Grave pages) to the various places where those stars are buried, in case anyone here might like to visit a few someday.

A third teenage victim has died after being shot in rural Marion County, Florida, last week, according to those who knew her.

Layla Silvernail 16, was one of three teenage friends shot and left for dead in the county north of Orlando between March 30 and April 1. Authorities transported her to a hospital in critical condition, and she has since died, according to a GoFundMe created by her softball league.

"Southeastern Fastpitch and the Marion County softball players are grieving the loss of Layla Silvernail, who was taken from us too soon. Layla was a caring young lady, an amazing athlete, and a cherished teammate to so many young girls," Southeastern Fastpitch CEO Russell Pierce said in a Thursday morning statement.

Silvernail was "known for uplifting new and younger teammates and encouraging them to play hard and believe in themselves," Pierce said, adding that the 16-year-old was "truly a gifted softball player."

She was one of three teenage friends apparently shot and left for dead in Marion County, a rural area north of Orlando, between March 30 and April 1, according to Sheriff Billy Woods.

Woods told "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday morning that he has multiple leads and "a few" suspects in mind who are tied to the three teen shooting deaths.

He said a "wannabe gang" might be responsible.

"[T]hey're not the typical gangs that you see. It's more of a neighborhood gang," he said.

Deputies initially found Silvernail suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Forest Lakes Park on SE 183rd Avenue Road.

A day after finding Silvernail, MCSO deputies responded to SE 94th Street and SE 188th Court and located a deceased 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound.

The next morning, on April 1, the MCSO Major Crimes Unit, Forensic Unit and Underwater Recovery Team responded to the area of Malauka Loop and Malauka Loop Trace "in reference to information that Layla’s vehicle was partially submerged at the edge of a nearby body of water."

After obtaining a search warrant and searching her vehicle, authorities found another 16-year-old female, Camille Quarles, dead from a gunshot wound.

A GoFundMe for Quarles shared a message from her younger sister that reads: "Camille was a very beautiful person. She was really good at softball, she liked volleyball and basketball. She liked puzzles. She was really good at braiding my hair. She might’ve had ups and downs in life but she was still a good person. Camille liked to draw people and flowers. She loved clothes and shoes. I will forever miss my sister."

MCSO previously told Fox News Digital that they believe all three homicides are related. They have not released the name of the male victim.

Woods has also quashed rumors of a potential serial-killer suspect.

"There is no evidence – no information – that would even suggest that it is a serial killer," he told "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday. "These individuals were together. Everything points as to it was all the same event. Just they happened to be located in different locations."

"Justice will be brought for the victims and for the families.… I wish I could give a whole lot more information… but I remind everybody the integrity of the case for us is vitally important so that when we do present it in a court, and it does go before a jury, we have everything that we need to seal the case up."

These Irish idealists built their own eco-village: 'Sustainable living is possible'

Established in 1999, Cloughjordan Ecovillage is Ireland's first eco-village

A group of young environmentalists started a wild plan in the late 1990s to build Ireland's first eco-village to fight the climate crisis. More than twenty years later, the village is half finished.

In the early morning sunbeams play with the morning mist among the full apple trees in the Irish eco-village of Cloughjordan[1] (pronounced: klokdjorden). It is quiet. Farmer Pat Malone rides a bicycle towards his horses, his dog runs ahead of him. Pa Finucane cruises along the narrow asphalt roads in his red hybrid Hyundai to the supermarket, to get The Irish Times and oat milk for the guests of his hostel.

Malone and Finucane occupy two of the now 55 houses in the eco-village, that has about the size of fifty football fields. The houses are grouped together in small clusters. They are large houses that you might just come across in newly created residential districts in other countries. In the middle is a large co-working building, the central heating boilers and a park with solar panels. These mark the transition to the edible forest, the various gardens, the amphitheatre and the community farm.

Those 55 houses are considered a disappointment; the plan was that there would already be 130. The start went very well, in the late 1990s. The idea arose among visitors to an organic market in Dublin – about a two-hour drive from Cloughjordan. “A lot of us were activists,” said Davie Philip, one of the founders. “We blocked roads and a few of us were arrested for destroying the sugar beets of the multinational Monsanto. But something was going on. Throughout Europe, activists turned into pro-activists. Instead of being against something, they started talking about what they were actually for.”

Two meadows

Likewise in Ireland. Philip and a few others founded Sustainable Projects Ireland[2], an educational institution that became the parent company of the eco-village. It was the start of a two-year exploratory process in which ideas were formed, experts were consulted, field trips undertaken and new members recruited through monthly information evenings on the market. The 'project' then bought two pastures next to the original rural village of Cloughjordan.

Philip: “Our project was given a different model than existing eco-villages. By integrating with an existing village, we wanted to play a role in the regeneration of the countryside. The eco-village brought new people as customers to the existing stores, who were train users and sent their children to school.”

Making rural life flourish seems to have been successful. While facilities are closing in surrounding villages, Cloughjordan still has two primary schools, a supermarket and two pubs open – even more facilities have been opened such as a bookshop and cafe.

Show that it is possible

Veronica Ryan – one of the first residents – was particularly motivated by those words 'sustainable' and 'building' from the village's slogan: 'Building Sustainable Community'. “Sustainable living was still a topic that was not much discussed. We wanted to show that it was possible.” When later on it was discovered that the village had the lowest ecological footprint in Ireland, it was an important milestone and confirmation for her and the community, she says.

According to Ryan, sustainability is primarily apparent from the choices made when building. “The houses were then definitely cutting-edge in terms of energy efficiency, we were the only one in Ireland to have a central heating system and the water drainage system was also unique. Fortunately, society has now overtaken us on most points.”

Ryan works part-time for the eco-village and coordinates the education group. From the beginning, it was the desire to share the lessons learned with the outside world. And that happens. For example, in the weekly tour of the ecovillage and the giving of courses. They also welcome university students who do research and regularly visit groups from different backgrounds. Ryan: “Professors say they bring their students here because it gives them hope that one can achieve something.”

Edible forest

Sustainability is also apparent from the way the land is organised. A third is intended for housing, a third for agriculture and a third for an edible forest. For Ryan, that's important: “We share the planet with nature.” Hundreds of fruit and nut trees are planted on that land. At this time of year, the apple trees are full and the village has just had an unexpectedly large first cherry harvest.

The community farm is another initiative to explore a sustainable lifestyle. It is owned by the approximately seventy members who together pay the salary of the two farmers and the necessary investments. In exchange for sixteen euros per adult per week, they have unlimited harvest authorisation. The farmers grow about 40different crops using traditional farming techniques and ensure the arrival of young people in the community: every year there is room for six European volunteers who help for a year.

Growing food

The village has several agricultural initiatives, such as the research garden called the RED Gardens, the organic cattle ranch Crawfords Farm just outside the village and The Night Orchard, that makes apple cider. There is also its own ecological bakery.

Joe Fitzmaurice and his wife own a bakery with a wood-fired oven. They now bake rye and sourdough bread for which they only use organic flour, without chemical additives. Fitzmaurice himself started baking less and less bread. Instead, he teaches courses so that people can bake themselves.

People with strong opinions

However, not everything goes without a struggle. Davie Philip: “95 percent of the communities that start are falling apart because of conflict”. He no longer lives in the eco-village himself. “There are people with strong opinions,” explains Veronica Ryan. She also sees the positive side. “Because we've been through so much together, trust has been built up.”

One of the crises that shaped the village was the financial crisis in 2008. The master plan was to build 133 homes. All lots were sold and paid for. Due to the crisis, people had to withdraw and there are now only 55 houses. As a result, the loans have still not been repaid, the costs of the central facilities have to be borne by fewer people and the work involved in building a village has to be done by fewer people.

Yet that crisis at the beginning may now be an opportunity. Philip remains idealistic: “I am not interested in a village with large eco-houses. I question personal ownership. Why don't we let the houses belong to a cooperative?” He prefers to build houses where people can live together and he experiments with cheaper forms of living so that young people can also come to the village.

The question is therefore what will be connected to the black pipes that still protrude from the ground on the undeveloped lots. According to Philip, the village is slowly turning into a retirement home if no action is taken. Will the village be able to reinvent itself and provide space for a second generation of young families and idealists with wild plans?

warringah says get rekt terfs: the liberal party's TERF candidate was so thoroughly rejected by the electorate with a 6.6% swing against the libs that every other party increased its vote percentage. the incumbent who retained the seat is independent zali steggall, a former gold medal winning olympian who supports trans women in sports. the liberal mouthpieces last night were quick to blame deves for infecting other lib candidates by association, and if that's true, that's beautiful.

one nation actually lost votes: their overall vote increased, which is disheartening, but as antony green was quick to point out last night that is because they're running in far more seats than last election. in the seats where they ran last election they are (i think) entirely down between 5 and 10%.

queensland turning green: it was predicted and then mostly forgotten at the last election that they might pick up one or two, but that they might pick up four seats is just. aslkdfjhsa. i've lived in ryan and next door to griffith, i grew up in queensland and my family still live there, and i'm just flabbergasted. sometimes you can't believe something until you see it. qld is often referred to as the texas of australia, and anyone who actually pays a bit of attention to US politics at a state level knows texas is incredibly purple, so the comparison is more apt than most australians have ever really understood. yes they're inner brisbane seats, but the factors you might point to - students living around uq and griffith* are both captured in these seats, interstate migration to south east qld is higher than ever - have always been true in these areas. the number one issue of concern coming out of these seats (coming out of nearly every seat!) is climate change, and brisbane has been flooded multiple times in the last three years. it's literally that simple. griffith as an example had a 11.3% swing away from the libs, but none of that went to labor who has a 2.5% swing away from them too. the greens picked up 12.8% of that 13.8% swing.

which brings me to the big one.

the entire country has shifted to the left: both the lnp and labor lost votes. qld obviously had a massive swing from liberal to green, which blows my mind, but the greens picked up votes everywhere. at the same time we have the the shift to independents in key liberal seats, with candidates running as true centrists. it is a real rejection of the lnp's co-opting of US right-wing issues. the nationals are whatever, but the liberal party has abandoned its centrism entirely, and people don't want a bar of it. i don't think people saw the forest for the trees three years ago, but it really feels like the pandemic has woken this country up to its political landscape, and people have found it seriously fucking lacking. at least for today, before anyone has a chance to fuck shit up, i feel a little bit hopeful for the first time in 9+ years.

The day finally arrived, after many nights of packing bags, writing and rewriting lists, and checking all vehicles - everyone made their way to camp! This is a long held family tradition that the various members of the Collins Family have been coming to since the original 8 (Allan through Harley) were young! There have been many relationships - both romantic and platonic - that have been cemented on the campgrounds in the forest, and who knows, we might see some more relationships come up as a result of this summer experience! 

Here’s the schedule for day 1:

Everyone has time to register, unload their bags before having dinner in the mess hall and setting in for the official start of the conference! 

The day started with everyone making their way to Granite Falls from their respective locales:

(AN: Ignore how disjointed this looks, I had a pose made in blender and for some reason I can’t make group poses with more than 8 sims work anymore? Since my game likes testing me, I had to improvise 😂)

Mason and Adalynn travelled down with both sets of parents, Allan and Casandra came into Willowcreek beforehand so they could spend some time with the boys, before traveling along with Aaron and Angie in the Leonards RV together to Granite Falls. The journey from Willowcreek to Granite Falls by road its a 2 day drive with a few stops, the summer weather means that their journey was almost delayed by summer storms. Mason and Adalynn are thankful that their parents were there as the boys were restless on the journey and managed to be occupied by spending time with their grandparents. Mason’s sister Molly came back from her extended time abroad with her missions group, but chose to recuperate at home to help with the summer camp that’s happening for the children at Newcrest Baptist.

Barrett and Kyleigh also made the drive to Granite Falls in an RV, Allan and Casandra lent them the family RV and they also travelled with Annette and Ashton to help care for the kids on the journey. It’s a 1 and a half day drive, and they’re thankful that the weather was good on the road, because inside the RV the kids experienced some slight motion sickness and the situation would’ve been made worse if the weather was uncooperative. Thankfully, Casandra gave Kyleigh some advice on home remedies since some of her kids used to suffer with serious motion sickness back in the day, so they managed to avoid a messy situation.

Eric and Valentina made the drive in the family van with Claire and Ryan. Since Brindleton Bay is only a 6 hour drive (compared to the day and a half drive from Newcrest) from Granite Falls, Claire and Ryan came down to visit the twins and they all travelled together. The journey was uneventful, the children loved being outside and having Claire there meant that Valentina had an extra pair of hands to help care for the twins whilst Eric and Ryan took turns driving.

Carter, Madelynn, and Lester flew into the nearby airport with Madelynn’s family on the family plane. They drove into Oasis Springs to visit with them before they  flew together. It’s a 5 hour flight from Oasis Springs to Granite Falls, which is better than the almost 3 day drive that it would’ve been had they chosen to drive.

Zoe and baby JJ flew into San Myshuno to meet up with Reece, Stacie, and Liam, the 5 of them then flew into Brindleton Bay and rented a car to make the drive into Granite Falls. It shortened the journey and allowed for the boys to rest a bit on the way.

Branden & lea flew in on the Dahlmann’s private plane, they are so grateful that their daughter married into such a kind and generous family and they were able to fly in comfort!

The ‘singles’ at Allan’s place (who weren’t traveling with others) were driven by Macie with a luggage carrier attached to their car, and they stopped at a motel along the way to rest. Felix just joined in for the picture, but he flew in with his family, he and Priscilla can’t stand to be away from each other for too long - isn’t young love just the sweetest!

The ‘singles’ at Claire’s place also drove together, with Macie and Sabrina taking turns driving. Since they had their caravan with them, and the caravan has 2 bunk beds, the boys would take turns sleeping, and when one of the girls wanted to sleep one of the boys would sit up front with the driver for company.

Dinner was then open at the Mess Hall, before everyone made their way to the Main Hall for official opening of the conference.

The evening began with an opening welcome from Steve Johnson, who is on the board of the CFLL (Centre for Learning and Life) he welcomed everyone and thanked them for taking the time for what would “no doubt be an upbuilding week surrounded by Christ-like individuals” Steve and his wife Krystal have 9 children (who were all homeschooled) and have 6 grandchildren.

Next came a welcome from Colt & Pearl Powell, they outlined what would take place over the next few days and welcomed all to participate in the activities and sessions that will happen. They welcomed families of all kinds to the conference, and expressed the hope that all there would be made to feel welcome. Colt is also on the Board for the CFLL, and he along with his wife Pearl they’ve pastored at a church in Appaloosa Plains while raising 11 children.

Next came the invocation done by Matthew and Beatrice Sanders, Matthew led the group in a prayer for God’s blessings on the conference, “that they may be built up and encouraged by the people there and led by God to save souls.” Matthew and Beatrice live in a bustling town called Riewhite help coordinate with the many teams and retreats that CFLL runs, whilst also raising their 7 children.

Richard Davis then kicked off the program with a sermon titled ‘How to Succeed with grace’. He extolled the virtue and encouraged all members of the family how they can try harder to show grace to one another, and how everyone can show grace to those outside the family. Richard is the Acting Director of the CFLL and is also one of the main organisers for the conference, Richard and his wife Camille live just outside Brindleton Bay and attend a rural church with those who live on the different farms.

After the sermon, there was a prayer before everyone was dismissed for some fellowship before dinner. Everyone then headed to bed to get an early start for day 2!

Beating The Heat Is Out Of Reach (IPCC, AP News) The U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a shocker of a report Monday summarizing the latest authoritative scientific information about global warming. 234 scientists contributed to the 3,000-plus-page report. Global temperatures have already risen by 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since the 19th century, the highest in over 100,000 years. Further warming is already “locked in,” meaning even if emissions are drastically cut, some changes will be “irreversible” for centuries. Ice melt and sea-level rise are already accelerating, and wild weather events like heatwaves and storms are expected to worsen and become more frequent. Earth is warming so fast that by the 2030s, temperatures will probably exceed the Paris climate accord’s ideal goal of no more than 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit and 1.5 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. The report called it a “code red for humanity.”

Infrastructure bill approved in Senate (AP) With a robust vote after weeks of fits and starts, the Senate approved a $1 trillion infrastructure plan for states coast to coast on Tuesday, as a rare coalition of Democrats and Republicans joined together to overcome skeptics and deliver a cornerstone of President Joe Biden’s agenda. “Today, we proved that democracy can still work,” Biden declared at the White House, noting that the 69-30 vote included even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. The overwhelming tally provided fresh momentum for the first phase of Biden’s “Build Back Better” priorities, now heading to the House. A sizable number of lawmakers showed they were willing to set aside partisan pressures, at least for a moment, eager to send billions to their states for rebuilding roads, broadband internet, water pipes and the public works systems that underpin much of American life. The measure proposes nearly $550 billion in new spending over five years in addition to current federal authorizations for public works that will reach virtually every corner of the country. There’s money to rebuild roads and bridges, and also to shore up coastlines against climate change, protect public utility systems from cyberattacks and modernize the electric grid. Public transit gets a boost, as do airports and freight rail. Most lead drinking water pipes in America could be replaced.

COVID vaccines to be required for military under new US plan (AP) Members of the U.S. military will be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine beginning next month under a plan laid out by the Pentagon Monday and endorsed by President Joe Biden. In memos distributed to all troops, top Pentagon leaders said the vaccine is a necessary step to maintain military readiness. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the mid-September deadline could be accelerated if the vaccine receives final FDA approval or infection rates continue to rise. “I will seek the president’s approval to make the vaccines mandatory no later than mid-September, or immediately upon” licensure by the Food and Drug Administration “whichever comes first,” Austin said in his memo, warning them to prepare for the requirement.

For first time, average pay for supermarket and restaurant workers tops $15 an hour (Washington Post) The U.S. labor market hit a new milestone recently: For the first time, average pay in restaurants and supermarkets climbed above $15 an hour. Wages have been rising rapidly as the economy reopens and businesses struggle to hire enough workers. Some of the biggest gains have gone to workers in some of the lowest-paying industries. Overall, nearly 80 percent of U.S. workers now earn at least $15 an hour, up from 60 percent in 2014. Job sites and recruiting firms say many job seekers won’t even consider jobs that pay less than $15 anymore. For years, low-paid workers fought to make at least that much. Now it has effectively become the new baseline. Economists caution that a higher average wage is not the same as a $15 minimum wage. Half of workers in these industries are still making below $15 an hour. Nonetheless, rising pay is still a game-changer for millions of workers.

Dry California tourist town to guests: ‘Please conserve’ (AP) Tourists flock by the thousands to the coastal town of Mendocino for its Victorian homes and cliff trails, but visitors this summer are also finding public portable toilets and signs on picket fences pleading: “Severe Drought. Please conserve water.” Hotels have closed their lobby bathrooms and residents have stopped watering their gardens in the foggy outpost about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of San Francisco after two years of little rain sapped many of the wells Mendocino depends on for potable water. Mendocino’s water woes were compounded in recent weeks when the city of Fort Bragg a few miles to the north—its main backup water supplier—informed officials that it, too, had a significant drop in its drinking water reserves after the Noyo River recorded its lowest flows in decades. “This is a real emergency,” said Ryan Rhoades, superintendent of the Mendocino City Community Services District, which helps manage the water in the town’s aquifer.

Nicaragua recalls four LatAm ambassadors in tit-for-tat move (Reuters) Nicaragua has recalled its ambassadors to Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Costa Rica for “consultations,” the government said on Monday, deepening the Central American country’s international isolation over its crackdowns on the opposition. Mexico, Argentina and Colombia recently recalled their ambassadors to protest against moves to clamp down on the opposition in Nicaragua, while Costa Rica a few weeks ago suspended the appointment of its ambassador to the country. On Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Ortega of taking new “undemocratic, authoritarian actions.” Blinken also singled out Ortega’s wife, Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo, and said the two were seeking to hold on to power “at all costs” with a strategy of disqualifying potential opposition candidates. Nicaragua is due to hold presidential elections in November in which Ortega is seeking a fourth consecutive term.

Twelve Days In Office, and Crisis Swamps Peru’s Leftist President (Bloomberg) Peru’s new president is off to a rocky start, selecting contentious ministers, alienating allies and setting the stage for a brutal face-off with congress, all within days of taking office. A rural teacher and union activist, Pedro Castillo won the election after reassurances that he’s his own man, not beholden to his party’s Marxist ideology or chief. But when he named his cabinet—including a prime minister who’s under investigation for being an alleged apologist for terrorists—analysts, opposition figures and even some who’d backed him expressed alarm, so much so that the word “impeachment” was heard more than once. “His political capital went up in smoke in 24 hours,” said Rodolfo Rojas, a partner of the Lima-based Sequoia political advisory group. “If he doesn’t change course, there’s no future for him.” Impeachment isn’t imminent, Rojas said, but a clash with congress looks likely. And while Peru has made a habit of ousting presidents, it’s rare for such a discussion to take place within days of inauguration.

French wine production set for a 30-percent drop (Washington Post) A confluence of weather woes is hurting France’s wine harvest. First, there was severe frost in the spring, which laid the foundation for disaster by damaging 30 percent of the production. Then, torrential summer rains hit western Europe in July, leaving parts of Germany and Belgium ravaged by floods, and leading to fungal attacks on grapes and their leaves in France. All of this has set France up for a wine supply drop of 24 to 30 percent this year—the lowest output since 1970, France’s farm ministry said Friday. For champagne, harvest potential has been slashed in half, some producers warned. In Italy, the world’s largest wine producer, high temperatures in the south caused an early harvest, while heavy rains in the north caused a late harvest, according to farmers association Coldiretti. Output is estimated to fall by 5 to 10 percent.

'We fought a great battle': Greece defends wildfire response (AP) As Greece’s massive wildfires were being largely tamed Tuesday, the country’s civil protection chief defended the firefighting efforts, saying every resource was thrown into the battle against what he described as the fire service’s biggest-ever challenge. Nikos Hardalias said authorities “truly did what was humanly possible” against blazes that destroyed tens of thousands of hectares (acres) of forest and hundreds of homes, killed a volunteer firefighter and forced more than 60,000 people to flee. Two other firefighters were in intensive care with severe burns. “We handled an operationally unique situation, with 586 fires in eight days during the worst weather conditions we’ve seen in 40 years,” Hardalias told a news conference. “Never was there such a combination of adverse factors in the history of the fire service.” Greece had just experienced its worst heat wave since 1987, which left its forests tinder-dry. Other nearby nations such as Turkey and Italy also faced the same searing temperatures and quickly spreading fires.

Smoke from Siberia wildfires reaches north pole in historic first (Guardian) Smoke from raging forest fires in Siberia has reached the north pole for the first time in recorded history, as a Russian monitoring institute warned the blazes were worsening. Devastating wildfires have ripped across Siberia with increasing regularity over the past few years, which Russia’s weather officials and environmentalists have linked to climate change and an underfunded forest service. One of Siberia’s hardest-hit regions this year has been Yakutia – Russia’s largest and coldest region that sits atop permafrost – which has had record high temperatures and drought. On Saturday, the US space agency Nasa said its satellite images showed wildfire smoke travelling “more than 3,000km (1,800 miles) from Yakutia to reach the north pole”, calling it “a first in recorded history”. It added that on 6 August most of Russia was covered in smoke. According to Russia’s forestry agency, this year’s fires have ravaged more than 14m hectares, making it the second-worst fire season since the turn of the century.

Lockdowns In Manila (Guardian) The more aggressive Delta variant of COVID-19 has led to record case numbers in countries across Southeast Asia. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam have reported record cases in recent weeks. The variant was detected in the Philippines in mid-July and has spread to 13 of 17 regions. On Friday, the national capital region of Manila, with a population of almost 14 million, was placed under strict lockdown until August 20 in an attempt to slow the spread. Only authorized people, including those buying food, traveling for medical reasons, or frontline workers are allowed to go outside. The day before the lockdown went into effect, thousands rushed to vaccination centers and waited for hours hoping to get a shot. Rumors had spread that unvaccinated people wouldn’t be allowed to claim government aid or go outside.

Taliban Capture Sixth Provincial Capital (Foreign Policy) The Taliban’s advance across Afghanistan continued on Monday with the capture of Aibak, the capital of Samangan province, marking the sixth provincial capital to fall to the group in less than a week. Monday’s seizure was hastened by the defection of Asif Azimi—a prominent warlord with ties to the now defunct Northern Alliance—a worrying sign of shifting allegiances due to a rapidly changing situation on the ground. As the fighting drags on, pressure is building on President Ashraf Ghani to get a handle on the situation or get out of the way. Reports in Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal paint a picture of an isolated leader whose best hope lies in rallying support from anti-Taliban groups ahead of an all-out civil war.

Shane knew they shouldn’t have gone out there alone.

"This forest is pretty spooky, don't you think? Maybe Bigfoot will really give us a visit." Shane laughed quietly, cold air coming out of his mouth in white puffs.

It's fairly chilly too, he mused, and then looked up from his phone when no answer came from his friend. He’s been aimlessly scrolling on social media while waiting for Ryan to finish shooting the scenes he wanted. Shane pocketed the phone, glancing around, searching for Ryan. His whole body gone cold when he realized he was alone, that he probably had been alone for minutes by then. Shane called out, panic bubbling up in his chest, knocking the wind out of him. "Ryan?"

Shane knew they shouldn’t have gone out there alone, but Ryan insisted. ‘We can shoot a few cool nature clips on our own, it’s fine’. They promised Devon they wouldn’t wander too far into the woods, and they didn’t. He could’ve easily found his way back from where they were in like five minutes.

Shane should’ve paid more attention to Ryan though, he let his guard down because they were in a forest, not an old prison, or a rural house with harmless ghosts and demons he can intimidate to not even dare as much as glancing at Ryan's way. He didn’t feel any presence in the parts of the forest they explored for the video, so he let his guard down and now Ryan was missing and Shane didn’t know what the fuck to do.

No answer came, just the quiet sounds of the forest around him. The sun was still out, some birds were happily chirping, it was a beautiful day, really. And Ryan was fucking missing.

Shane took a ragged breath, his insides were doing flips, the demon in him going wild. He needed to find Ryan. He could’ve been attacked, or taken by another demon, or a wild animal, or a serial killer or–

Shane didn't realize he was moving, frantically pushing his way through bushes and trying to keep the branches out of his face.

"Ryan, goddammit, where are you?!"

He stopped for a second, trying to think rationally, but his mind was buzzing numbly, repeating the words "have to find him". Maybe he should call TJ. But what if it's a demon who has Ryan? No, he has to do this alone. It’s been only a few minutes, if Ryan wandered off on his own, he could’ve been too far away. On the other hand, if it was some demon who knows where Ryan was at that point.

It was so so dumb, going out there, just the two of them. It was only supposed to be a few minutes. But now Ryan is missing and Shane is freaking the fuck out. How could he be so careless? He always had Ryan in his sight, in every single location they visited, Shane's main focus was protecting Ryan. From nasty demons, and spirits to fucking Bigfoot if he must.

Defeated and worried, he walked back to where they started filming, so maybe if Ryan finds his way back they can meet up. Shane yelled some more, until his voice was hoarse and raw, never getting any response back, nothing. The forest was just as warm and peaceful and still.

And Ryan was fucking gone. That's it, he won't ever see him again.

Scenarios played in his head, Ryan laying on the forest ground, bleeding out, getting mauled to death by a bear or a demon.

Shane only noticed he wasn't breathing properly when actually started choking, throat closing off, and heart hammering in his chest. It felt like he was underwater, gallons and gallons of ocean water pressing down on his lungs. The chirping of the birds and the soft rustling of leaves was replaced by the sound of blood rushing in his ear. He had to find him.

"Shane?" It was faint, just barely picked up by Shane’s delicate senses, but it was Ryan. His Ryan.

"Ryan!" He tried shouting again, long legs already carrying him the direction Ryan's voice came from. He heard his name again, closer this time. Shane broke into a run. It wasn’t graceful, he almost slipped twice, but he didn’t even register it.

And finally, he saw Ryan. He was grinning at him like Shane hadn't just almost died at the thought of losing him.

Shane closed the distance between them with quick, long strides, and slammed into Ryan, arms wrapping around him like an octopus. He nearly knocked them straight on their asses.

"Whoa, easy there buddy." Ryan wheezed, face squished into Shane's chest. "I'm fine, it's okay."

Shane buried his face into Ryan's curls, breathing in his scent, his lungs working properly again. Absolute relief flooded him, rendering his whole body numb. Ryan was safe. With him.

"I was so worried. You were just gone and I-" His voice cracked and his eyes were stinging a little. He wasn’t tired, a little running around in the woods is nothing to a demon, but mentally, he was exhausted.

He just wanted to go back to the hotel and lay on the bed for a few hours. Possibly do all of that without letting go of Ryan at all.

"Shane, look at me." Ryan gently pushed him away, and Shane had to resist the urge to pull him right back. His skin was prickling just to touch Ryan, to know for sure that he's there and it’s not some cruel hallucination.

Ryan stopped talking abruptly, whatever he was about to say flew out the window apparently. His eyes widened, staring into Shane’s own.

He was staring at Shane like he saw a ghost, literally. Shane could sense the fear rolling off of him in waves, and oh it was so delicious, but it horrified him at the same time, putting him on edge. "What? What's wrong?"

And then he realized.

His eyes were black, he must’ve forgotten to get rid of them after searching for Ryan.

Fuck.

"Listen, I can expl–"

Shane was cut off by blinding pain radiating from his nose, spreading onto his cheeks and jaw. He saw white for a moment. His human body could only take so much and Ryan was pretty damn strong. The punch landed just the right way, with a sickening crunch. Fight or flight kicked in, and boy did Ryan fight. It hurt like a motherfucker too.

"Ow, Ryan what the hell?!" He blinked away the tears welling up in his eyes to glare at Ryan, whose expression was a mix between confused, regretful and terrified. Well, Shane could hardly blame him. There he was, one of Ryan's biggest fears standing right in front of him.

Shane was oddly proud of him, even when he tasted blood in his mouth, dripping down his lips and chin in a steady flow.

"Are you– are you possessed? I have holy water, I'm not scared to use it!"

"Yeah, I fucking noticed you're not scared." And he was laughing now, spitting out blood, because this was ridiculous. He never would've thought that Ryan Bergara, when faced with an actual demon, would just deck it in the nose. Shane lifted his hands in front of him, to show he's harmless.

"No, I'm not possessed. I'm a demon. I hadn’t meant to tell you this way, I wanted to ease you into it." His voice sounded stupid, but he did his best to remain serious as he continued.

"I understand that you're scared, and you might hate my guts now, but I'm still the same, Ryan. I promise. I still love doing Unsolved, and I still adore our movie nights, and the Disneyland trips. I would never cause you harm intentionally."

Shane sounded desperate, but he didn’t even care. Ryan was one of the best things in his life, and he wasn’t about to lose him. He was stubbornly staring at his shoes throughout his whole speech, dripping a few drops of blood on it. Aw, shit.

Ryan said nothing for a torturously long minute until Shane finally looked up at him. He was the one feeling terrified himself, of the possibility fucking up their friendship, and the hope of something more, that they danced around for months by then, neither of them brave enough to take the first step.

"Let me see your nose." Is the first thing Ryan said, and for the second time that day, Shane was so relieved. Ryan shuffled closer, already digging through his pockets for some tissue paper.

They sat next to each other on a moss covered fallen tree, and Ryan wiped off the blood from Shane’s face, with shaky hands. He was tense and clearly not comfortable with even just sitting next to him. Shane fucked up so bad, and it hurt more than his nose ever could.

"'M not gonna hurt you, Ry, I promise," Shane muttered, softly. It made Ryan's chest ache. It was just Shane, the guy who yells at ghosts to rip out his spine, and who makes Ryan laugh in the most ridiculous situations. He's tall and gangly, and when they found each other earlier, he was clinging to Ryan like his life depended on it.

"Yeah, I know, big guy." Ryan cleans his face off as best as he can, some of the blood already dried on his chin. Shane stuffed two rolled up tissue paper into his nostrils. It hurt and it was uncomfortable, but soaked up the blood.

"I think I broke your nose, I'm so sorry," Ryan said with a pained expression.

"You know, I can't believe the first thing you do when you face a demon is to punch him in the face. Who are you?" Shane laughed.

"I panicked!" Ryan flushed, embarrassed. "I thought you were going to kill me."

"Well, the jig is up." Shane laughed, there was no humor in it. "I'm gonna be real with you, if you want to be as far away from me as possible, I can do that."

Ryan looked ready to cut him off, but Shane put up his hand.

"Just, let me-- I don't think I can do this again if you interrupt me now."

He wasn't looking at Ryan while he took a shaky breath, desperately scrambling for coherent thoughts.

"I like you." He paused. "No, fuck that, I love you. People don't say that enough, you know. Actually, what do I know? I'm a demon." Shane said, wheezing, but it came out more like a strangled choke, the weight of Ryan knowing his so carefully hidden secret sat heavy on his chest.

"Shane."

"I'm really just rambling now, do you want to go back to the hotel? I wonder what-"

"Shane." It was more assertive this time, and Shane shut up immediately, lifting his gaze to meet Ryan's.

"Listen, big guy, calm down." Both of Ryan's hands came up to frame Shane’s face, who was just staring at him, a little dazed. From the blood loss and Ryan himself too. Ryan was grinning, looking like the entire sun, and Shane thought it was so fucking unfair.

"You're an idiot. I'm gonna kiss you, alright?" Shane took three whole seconds to process the question, nodding eventually. One of his hands found its way to Ryan's wrist, Shane felt his pulse going wild. And then Ryan was pulling him down, pressing their lips together.

It wasn’t how he imagined at all.

He thought about it a lot, actually, much more than anyone else would think about kissing their best friend. Sometimes, when he was bored at their desks, just watching Ryan work. He imagined grabbing Ryan's chair and spinning him towards himself, kissing the surprise off of his face. He imagined holding Ryan close, when they slept at some haunted place, and kissing him until he stopped worrying over the creaks and noises.

Shane thought about their half serious, half banter fights, and how he'd ache to push Ryan against the closest wall, kissing him senseless just so he shuts up about ghosts for once.

No, when they finally kissed, his nose smashed against Ryan's cheek, sending a jolt of pain through his face. He still tasted copper in his mouth and Shane was sure Ryan could taste it too. When the pain in his nose became truly uncomfortable, he just had to pull away. It was possibly the worst kiss Shane ever had. Ryan was wheezing into his shoulder as soon as they broke apart, and he found himself laughing with him, because, despite all of that, it was perfect, it was so painfully them. Later they’d have to explain to the rest of the crew how Shane tripped, but he’s fine and no, he doesn’t need to go to the ER, it’s okay, while heading to their shared room. And if anyone noticed them holding hands, no one said anything.

This summer, I, Grist intern extraordinaire, took it upon myself to scour every single candidate’s campaign website and Twitter feed, along with their responses to news outlets’ surveys, for their positions on various environmental issues. Then I dumped them in a big ol’ spreadsheet I titled “someone, please, drop out.”

So what did I find? I’ll spare you the details for each of the 20-plus candidates, but here are the highlights: In addition to their distinctive climate plans, senators Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts), Kirsten Gillibrand (New York), and Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota), along with former Vice President Joe Biden, all have rural policy proposals with some climate components. Vermont Senator Bernie Sandershasn’t released a climate-specific policy plan yet, but his rural plan devotes an entire section to empowering farmers, foresters, and ranchers to address the climate crisis. These candidates’ proposals address a wide range of rural problems, from education to infrastructure, but they also put forth some land-related changes that sound straight out of the IPCC report.

All of these contenders say they would significantly increase funding to existing government programs that pay farmers to transition to sustainable methods and help conserve, or at least better manage, land that’s especially important and fragile, like wetlands. The specifics of how much more money would go to these programs varies candidate by candidate. Only Warren has the numbers — she wants to increase funding for the Conservation Stewardship Program, which pays farmers to use sustainable farming practices, by fifteenfold.

Of course, policy plans aren’t the only way for candidates to show voters where they stand on environmental issues. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker hasn’t released a land management “plan” as part of his campaign platform, but he plans to introduce relevant legislation in the Senate next month. The Climate Stewardship Act, announced last Thursday, takes a “nature-based” approach to fighting the climate crisis by committing the government to planting 9.5 billion trees on federal land by 2050, providing grants for wetland restoration, creating a “Civilian Conservation Corps” to train and employ young people to do conservation projects, and investing $25 million a year in urban farms and community gardens in low-income areas.

O’Rourke and Washington Governor Jay Insleedon’t have rural policies, but they do have climate policies that mention agricultural and land management (you see why I made a spreadsheet to keep track of all this). Inslee plans to invest in R&D for farming methods and technologies aimed at sequestering carbon in the soil, in addition to increasing bioenergy production on farms. O’Rourke would direct more funding toward paying farmers to adopt sustainable practices. Still, both of their land management proposals are pretty sparse compared to the specificity in the plans from Biden, Sanders, and Warren.

As for some of the other candidates you’ve been hearing about? Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, and Ohio Representative Tim Ryan both mentioned the important role agriculture has to play in dealing with the climate crisis during the June debates, but neither candidate has released a comprehensive policy plan on the topic — in fact, Buttigieg’s rural plan doesn’t even mention farms or the climate. California Senator Kamala Harris hasn’t shared ag or climate proposals except for a vague position statement on her website.

Roma Movie Review

It is more than nostalgia. Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma evokes a time, a place and a situation---specifically, a middle class existence for a family of six and their servant in 1970, in Mexico City. If wistful memory was all it had to offer, it would be pleasant but forgettable. Cuaron’s crucial decision is to tell the story from the perspective of the servant, and to not give her omniscience. Other people---a harried mother, an unfaithful father, her rat of a boyfriend, four children in a hurry to grow up---move in and out of her view, and we see them as she does: for moments.

Her name is Cleo, played by Yalitza Aparicio, and she is in that place between becomings, when you are no longer a child but haven’t figured out what to do when you grow up yet. She has pinned her future to Fermin (Jorge Antonio Guerrero), a nice boy who practices martial arts to overcome his violent upbringing and swears devotion to her; she will become pregnant, and he will conveniently forget his promises. Antonio (Fernando Grediaga), the oft-absent doctor husband of the family she works for, goes on many business trips, and decides not to come back from one of them, preferring instead his mistress. His wife Sofia (Marina de Tavera) is tasked with the most ancient of female responsibilities: to hold her head high and protect her children so a man can do whatever he pleases. The children (Marco Graf, Daniela Demesa, Diego Cortina, Carlos Peralta) are mostly oblivious, but the oldest boy catches one of those instances when his mother cannot hold in the anger, heard through a kitchen door in a shot that will be familiar to most children as that time they first realized their parents were fallible.

Her role in the household is well-defined. Sofia greatly values her, but if, as sometimes happens, the dutiful mother finally breaks down from stress and comes home drunk one night, hitting the garage walls with her Ford Galaxie, it is part of Cleo’s job to say nothing. If the residual pain boils over and the children devolve to a fist fight, it is her job to break it up without being too forceful. She is to be loved, and she is, legitimately; this is not a case of a well-to-do family paying lip service to their help. When she becomes pregnant, they handle her care, and in a harrowing scene her water breaks during a student riot. She is also to be invisible.

All of the people in the movie have stories, but we only see those chapters which Cleo sees. The film never once cuts away from her perspective. Since the cheating husband is mostly outside her view, we almost never see him; perhaps if Cleo had known him better, we would. Whatever private torments Sofia suffers in her role as mother and protective spinner of domestic fairy tales, we are privy only to those Cleo is. This is most dramatically seen in the person of Fermin, the unreliable boyfriend. When they are together, we see him as she does: strong, romantic, devoted, a person who will protect her and love her. When he leaves, we see no more of him for a while. He shows up at a few intervals in the story, each time having revealed more of himself in the gap, and we see only the results, to often startling effect. Most movies reduce such characters to a set of traits to force the plot along, but Fermin seems to have a life, even if it’s one we feel contempt for. As much as I didn’t like him, I wanted to hear his point of view.

The film is heavily based on Cuaron’s childhood, Colonia Roma being the neighborhood of his youth, which is why it is telling he opted not to show it from a child’s perspective. In an interview given to Variety, he admits having a childlike take on his upbringing, and he got out of his own head by fictionalizing his family’s real maid, Liboria. She came from a rural area that was in his mind far away, and Cleo comes from a rural home oft-mentioned but never seen; the family talks of visiting but you sense that is one boundary that is forbidden. Much Mexican cinema that makes it to the U.S. depicts poverty, which we sense is Cleo’s lot in life were she not with the family Cuaron evidences some guilt in his interview about growing up in relative comfort. He shouldn’t, and even if he deserved to, his films show this did not dull his human sensitivity. He has an empathetic eye for what makes us, us.

Two themes drive his recollection: the way we never can know all of another person, and cycles. When the family escapes for Christmas to the home of a wealthy uncle, Cleo watches as sparks rise from beyond a wooded clearing, perhaps other revelers. No; it is a forest fire, and the family goes as close as they can to watch, and in the morning the land has been cleared, ready to regrow. Many members of the family could use that; I suspect we all could. I was surprised to find Cuaron handled his own cinematography, shooting in large-format black-and-white, but immediately after I found that out it made sense. It’s the respect in which we do see things through his eyes, and he lingers on that fire through the trees as it grows, letting it expand and just watching. It’s a stunningly beautiful shot that would have been destroyed by color. Other times when Cuaron’s understated visual focus is essential are in viewing a massive, violent riot mostly through the windows of a furniture store, always showing cars pulling into the attached garage from within, and the simple ways people on the street go about their business as Cleo makes her way through them. We are almost always looking through someone’s eyes, even when that person is on camera. What a perfect choice, in an age when jump cuts are almost the default. It lends these memories an intimacy that leaves them to live in your mind. The movie is streaming on Netflix, but I saw it in a theatre; this is ideal, and the way you should see it. It is the greatest work to date from an endlessly fascinating filmmaker, and I doubt a television could really capture it.

In Cuaron’s breakthrough film Y Tu Mama Tambien, the ostensible point is to find a beach the protagonists visited once long ago, which is really a metaphor for things we cannot have. There is a beach, too, in Roma. Though this isn’t a movie where the modern dread of spoilers really applies, I will forego talking about how it is used, except to say this: it is the place where all of the emotions in the film come together. It is no longer possible for Cleo to be invisible there. Back home, she takes the laundry, walks off screen, and the camera lingers on a plane passing overhead. If you wait long enough, another plane will pass. And then another.

Verdict: Must-See
