Resplandor — S/T (Runstate Tapes)

One of the English words to which “resplandor” translates is radiance, and Resplandor, the Mexico City-based punk band, makes music that radiates any number of feeling tones: snarling negation, hipshot confidence and even a sort of sweaty, pogoing joy. This self-titled debut cassette burns through all of those moods, frequently in the same song. See the track simply titled “No,” which starts with a post-punky, sorta-anxious, sorta-shoulder-shimmying bass-driven riff. Soon enough though, the band’s more characteristic sound kicks into full force. A sequence of riffs that’s just melodic enough, guitar tone with a tasty layer of scuzz on it, shout-sung vocals with a touch of reverb, to add to the increasingly urgent chaos. In the song’s final 30 seconds, drummer Adrian sends the tune into double time, and guitarist Johnny P relocates that post-punk vibe with an icy, incisive bit of soloing. For a new band, the song is very put together (by underground punk standards—and really, who needs any others?), and it turns out the whole tape replicates that pairing of sharp songwriting and assured performance.

There’s not a lot of info circulating about Resplandor, but the music speaks for itself. The opening gestures of “Nunca Pidiendo Perdó” had this reviewer doing a double-take (“Did I put on that first TSOL EP by mistake?”) until vocalist Nancy started bawling and upbraiding everyone and everything in earshot. She’s one of those punk singers that doesn’t sacrifice legibility for ugliness, but there’s no mistaking the truculence, the desperation and the passion in her voice. The band matches her intensity and her commitment to coherence. They play loud and fast, but the songs have rock-n-roll form, blistering and blustering in equal measure.

Lyrics focus on blistering (at least so far as this reviewer, whose vernacular Mexican Spanish is basically nonexistent, can tell); and simultaneously there are hints of a more perceptive and vulnerable human presence behind the band’s sizzling and spiky surface values. See “Mecanismos de Defensa”: “Quedarme desnuda / Quitarme la ropa / Quedarme sin nada / Sin escape, sin salida / Sin escape, sin salida / De me misma.” That’s a strange sort of defense mechanism, stripping the self so raw. But there’s something punk rock about it, replete with a very punk set of contradictions—like a big and bright “FUCK YOU” tattoo that you can only see when a wide swath of skin is laid bare. Resplandor glows hot with that sort of energy, and this tape is a promising sign of even more illuminating music to come.

At least I did it! I suffered a minor thigh strain last week at rugby training & with work last Saturday I sensibly took over a week off running. I cried off training Thursday to give myself the best chance to get round park run today. I did, thigh is okay, but everything else aches! Really wasn’t feeling it, just going through the motions! Everything seems a bit like that at the moment. Therapy is going well, but asking questions & opening doors to things I’m not really ready to address yet. Very draining. Not been sleeping well, not eating great & generally not feeling comfortable in my own skin! I’ll keep at it, plate just feels very full. Talking about it helps, even if just over sharing under these little squares! No parkrun next week as rugby training moves to Saturday morning so everyone gets Sunday off for Mother’s Day. As I completed my run Friday afternoon before going to work. One of my neighbors asked why do I run. I was taken back by the question because no has ever asked me this. Gentle one for parkrun 101. Much colder than I realised, I stepped out of the house & could see my breath! Swapped cap for beenie & put a jacket on. A good choice was was a little by the end of the run, but defo needed them for jog down, Jeff home & first mile! Had to be gentle as I’ve finally agreed to put my boots on for #poolerfc 2nds this afternoon. What started as I’ll bring boots & maybe 5 mins at the end if needed, too we might not have enough & can you get there early enough for the full warm up before kick off! We’re away at Lytchett if anyone is local & nothing on this afternoon. It’s been over 20 years, but training has been going well.
