After moving to the Waterhouse district in Kingston, he started singing on local sound systems and eventually performed an audition at the Channel One recording studios, run by Joe Joe Hookim. His first recording was two cover versions, one by the late, great Alton Ellis entitled "Blackman's World" and Ray Charles' "Crying Time". His first two hits were "See Them A Come" and "Champion Bubbler", both on the Sunset label, responsible for also producing early hits from Half Pint. After that point, Anthony was picked up by King Jammys, recording numerous hits with the King and singing over the immensely popular sound system of the same name over the course of the mid-to-late 1980s. I need to expand the story of these two ladies further, but first let’s talk about parallel universes...

For a while now, me and my friend were thinking of a project, which could be considered as "making fun of all the things"-concept. I saw “80s” and “a bit of an old anime” as an interesting artistic choice to work with, and my friend actually knew a thing or two of it from the inside. Since the initial idea of a main character derived from direct reference to vaporwave, it was decided to jokingly make the working title “Vaporverse” (that should be changed as soon as a better working title comes to mind).

Overview

Newbie gang member Bad Girl gets in trouble with the local bootleger Soundboy and they both make a mess, which leads Bad Girl to owe a lot of money. She threats to kill Soundboy if he doesn’t help her, and now they both need to get a lot of cash fast.

That’s the setup for fun and other shenanigans to begin.

Soundboy

Main hero, who has a cassette recorder with two decks and a whole lot of unused tapes, decides to break bad and start illegally copying and selling music. Apparently, something goes wrong with that cassette recorder and every copy of a song ends up being slowed down, which doesn’t stop Soundboy from selling them with titles and artists names changed (sometimes using japanese symbols). He then realizes that he might get caught for what he’s doing and that causes a bit of paranoia.

Bad Girl

Main female character has some business with one of the biggest gangs in town, though being on lower ranks. Her task was to prove herself capable of running errands on the local marketplace, controlled by the same gang, but some guy caused a lot of trouble for Bad Girl, selling his bootleg cassettes without permit. With her trusty baseball bat and scary stare she takes off to teach Soundboy a lesson of not so fair trade.

The Bug presents Killing SoundChapter 3: Black Wax Attack

“Black Wax Attack is a testament to the boom boom crack of my favourite bashy riddims. Its a journey through my treasured 7” vinyl collection as a self-confessed bashment worshipper. I got magnetised by dancehall’s swagger and daggering, and converted to reggae’s post “Sleng Teng” mechanoid mutations by Steely & Clevie’s truly outstanding “Streetsweeper Riddim”. Prior to that Greensleeves label purchase, I had been a foolishly arrogant dub snob, and former post-punk casualty/hip-hop nerd/free jazz space cadet, who had stupidly dismissed ragga as a cheesy, plastic, bastard offspring of reggae. But once smitten by Burro Banton’s “Boom Wha Dis” and Capleton’s “Final Assassin”, there was no turning back. I fell heavily for the ghetto punk attitude, and rabid studio experimentation. I became a regular buyer/addict at Stonebridge Park and Harlesden’ s various hole in the wall reggae vinyl stores, and money/time waster at Notting Hill’s, now sadly, deceased Dub Vendor reggae record haven. I would run weekly to these stores to check the zillions of vocals dropped on the multitude of riddims in an attempt to locate the freshest shizzle. And it was def thru that dancehall conversion, that I begged to link up with Daddy Freddy via The Rootsman, and released my first filthy bash-collision “Politicians & Paedophiles” (subsequently released by AFX in 2002), and then quickly formed my own Killing Sound imprint, to atomise parties, Razor X Productions. So herein resides 2 hours of my chosen dancehall drugs. A tunnel visioned tribute mix to Jamaican bionics. A relentless selection of frenzied mechanical gyrations, mind-blowing vocal detonations, electronic rhythm deviations and addictive hip juice injections. An attempt to keep faith in the future of a genre which has felt stale since the vinyl market collapse and the pop-lite takeover by the autotune generation. But a genre I still follow avidly, and await the next generation of freakbeat visionaries and motormouth specialists. If you like your sh-t rough and rugged, and riddled with experimental madness, tune in and shock out. It’s a tribute to the genius moves of Lenky, Dave Kelly and Ward 21…. etc. with the added spice of synths, drones and fx added by me live in the mix.
