Superbia is such an interesting notion!!! He completely breaks with the pattern we’ve seen with the previous deadly notions
He’s the only one based on a magical boy
2. He’s been awake for much longer than the others. Rui met Oya as a child so ~10ish years at the absolute minimum if all the Ainos and the ANRC blinked into existence at the same time OR 2023 years if he’s been watching over the world since the notion sky came into existence. The others woke up only after Tsubame woke up Ira
3. It doesn’t seem like there was any overlap between the other anti-war magical girls. Except I KNOW ALL. He was already there when Fubuki Hana died and before Shiro was recruited. (Either he wasn't transformed here or he wasn't a magical boy yet)
Tumblr media
4. His magic is off the scale. Avaritia's copy ability was one thing, we didn't really get to see Gula and Luxuria's abilities but Superbia being able to create people and a pocket dimension??
5. His effect on the blue sky wasn’t a heart shaped-notion but black fragments
6. Colour is so deliberate and holds so much information in this manga but he’s the only Deadly Notion whose viral absorption mechanism (heart arrow through the head) does not correspond with whatever effect he has on the sky: he’s sky blue just like the Ainos!!!
Tumblr media
Before the manga revealed that Superbia’s magic was in those black sections of sky I thought that the final thing to break would be the sky itself. Idk I still think it's far too big a coincidence that he and the Ainos are sky blue, but the lower half of his magical boy design is pitch black and Superbia is also consistently linked with darkness, not only in his magic but also in his appearances and when he speaks so hmm!
7. Maybe not such a surprise because he's able to mimic other people but he's the only one whose costume is different as a magical boy versus as a notion: sometimes he still has the coat (without the embellishments/crown though), but the other clothes he had on his upper body and his shoes are gone and he's wearing different trousers (not black!! edit: after reading ch 39 I guess that's just a stylistic choice, because he's wearing the greyish trousers + no shirt in the flashback too)
Tumblr media
I can't wait to find out what makes him so different from the others and how that ties into the story!

I would like to hear your thoughts on Magical Girl Tsubame.
As much as you would like.
I really liked the art. The geometric stars and dragon pattern on Ira's swords is really cool. Also the straight up words on the head that float unconnected was a really interesting and unique aspect.
'As much as I'd like' sure is a tempting invitation! It probably won't be very organized haha
(spoilers for Magical Girl Tsubame: I will (not) save the world! after the cut)
The art style was definitively a plus, it fits so well with the story! and the weirdness of the world if I can say it like that. It's both sharp and very smooth. The touch of colors (which I'm still not over where only there for the sky and notions at time but also Oya's blood) were always so niceee to see. Despite how simple it looks at first glance, it's packed with details (Aino's quatrum technology, Ira's sword, etc)!
I love how prevalent the heart motif is. It's in the sky, it's on magical girls (and boy, and man), it's everywhere on Koko(ro), in J♡P♡N and its flag, even bubble speeches are heart-shaped at times; it's fun how they forced the cuteness (because magical girls) while the story isn't cute - it fits a lot!
The intrigue is so creative, too. There are clear inspirations taken from Madoka Magica (because it's a monument of the genre) like the magical girls transforming into the enemies but it remains still very detached from it. Unlike Madoka Magica, there's a lot more humor here as well. But like it, it critics the magical girls system - albeit, where Madoka Magica still needed a sacrifice to reach its happy ending, Magical Girl Tsubame clearly states that for an happy ending for those girls, they can refuse to do what is asked of them and let the world burn if needs be. Tsubame and Rui are selfish (good, let them be) and that is what saves them - and free Koko - and sacrifice everyone for their sake rather than sacrificing themselves for everybody else's sake. And I love greatly-written trope subversion.
Favorite notions are Ira and Avaritia, albeit Gula and Luxuria were the funniest. We've got too little of Acedia that's unfair (but how quick Rui got rid of her was hilarious. Also I KNOW ALL filling us on her lore through MA14. I don't have much to say about Inividia. As for Superbia... I love him, I love him very much he's so messed up
Favorite characters will remain the girl trio (Tsubame, Rui, Koko) and our Famous Detective. I'm glad he got to stick around until the end and be changed into a magical man. He was sooo interested and invested in the whole deal and he found the answers to all his mysteries! Of course he'll never run out or mysteries to solve, but he was so happy throughout it all.
Each one of the girl is flawed in a believable way, it's very nice! They're all very complex, very compelling.
I loveeee post-apocalyptic world. And it was executed so greatly. I wish we saw more of the Aino - but that's only because there's so many of them and I'm hella curious about what their personalities are. Ohh! And the Prime minister! I wish we got more about her!
Tsubame was so right to choose her friends above everything else. Rui is too relatable (and her backstory hurtssss the notions also have sad backstories(for most) but Rui is.. ugh). And Koko is Koko and I love her and I'm glad Tsubame offered her her happy ending.
There's probably other things I forgot to talk about, and some I will develop in future post, I don't know, stay tuned I guess haha
Thanks for asking me to talk about it! Very much appreciated

The other day I was fondly remembering Darker than Black's worldbuilding method of "casually dropping very fucked up info into a conversation and carrying on", but damn Magical Girl Tsubame is also so good at this. I'm still reeling from Rui casually mentioning she was forcibly turned into a cyborg (in chapter 2 ffs), but oh boyy… chapter 10's "first new magical girl in 50 years" 💀💀💀……. I read that sentence about 20 times, thinking I misread it because What do you mean, FIFTY years???? Hold on, Hanabi, hold onnnnn, elaborate on that for a minute
Koko did that for 50 years? There was a war that bad for f i f t y years? She put up with all that for half a century, AT LEAST??? But Koko also attended school with Hibara for some time! Did this happen 50+ years before Hanabi joined or are magical girls just stuck at school forever because they remain that age? Was she alone for those 50+ years or did any other magical girls all die during that time? Or did they get corrupted and did the Ainos wipe everyone's memories of them so it seems like Hanabi was the first one in 50 years because her predecessors were edited out of history?
