Decided to rewatch Disney's Doug from the beginning and holy fuck the hate is...really overblown.
Look I get it, it's not as good as the Nick run, but it's the fifth season of an already-established show that had a production stall in between the buyout, and all the changes were done by the show's creator for a "fresh start" rather than Disney doing it. I know some of the show's staff even admitted they missed the more "quirky" feel of the original run compared to the "polished" feel of the Disney run, which I do agree with...but Nick in 1996 was not the same Nick in 1991 (as in, things were getting much more slick and commercial) so it's not like the new seasons running on Nick instead would be that much different. Overall despite the new outifts, theme, and some voices...I still feel like I'm watching the same show. These are still the same characters I know and love; they just have different outifts now and a year has passed.
I think my only real issues with it are Doug's new voice (Thomas McHugh is NOT a bad voice actor by any means and he did have big shoes to fill from Billy West, but...I think he was miscast as Doug), the first bunch of S5 episodes feeling shaky since you can tell the crew are trying to get used to doing 24-minute episodes regularly rather than the original "two shorts" format (with the exception of the holiday episodes), Doug himself (and sometimes Patti) sometimes holding the "jerkass ball" ("Doug's New School" comes to mind), Connie being skinny now since it was nice seeing that in the Nick run, she was chubby but wasn't insecure about it or singled out as the "fat girl" (remember- this was 1991), so that part of her character being changed had some negative implications, The Beets breaking up, and S7 overall being pretty weak with a few exceptions (though in all fairness most shows feel like that by that point).
Overall Disney's Doug isn't even "bad"; it's basically to Doug what the post-uncancellation Rugrats episodes were to the original 1991-95 run. While the "spark" didn't seem to be there anymore and lost the quirkier feeling it once had (Rugrats also started to have a more "polished" feel by that point in 1997), it's still a lot of fun and at least it still felt like the same show, if not "up there" with the golden era.
Also a lot of the hatred for the Disney run seems to also come from general hatred for The Walt Disney Company. Which, you know, I understand because Disney is an awful company that's done awful things but 1. individual creators do not represent the whole company and 2. Nickelodeon as a company ALSO sucks.

the rugrats reboot really missed a golden opportunity.
so the og series began in 1991. which means that those babies would be in their early 30s now.
which is the most common time to be new parents.
the reboot should have been the original babies as adults who remained friends and now have children of their own. with the original parents as the grandparents now.
the original series was very much rooted in 90s trends, particularly parenting fads and childhood norms like care bears and sugary cereals.
the new show could be about modern parenting stuff. like the obsession with kale and the debate on screen time.
all while this new generation of kiddos have adventures.
also. the og series broke grounds by having chuckie be raised by a widowed single dad, and later part of an interracial blended family.
the new show could break ground by having underrepresented queer families.
Maybe a trans dad who birthed his kids.
Or a polyamormous family.
Or an aro ace parent who fostered and then adopted their kids.
The possibilities are endless.
(Also Angelica 100% grew up to be a tik tok mom.)

I’m putting together my research and findings for my next Nickelodeon video. (No idea yet if it’ll be ready before or after the CatDog review, but you know what I mean. About Nickelodeon as a whole.) That video is basically looking back on the first 20 or so years of the NickToons, and if there’s a definitive golden, silver & bronze age to be discerned. What makes the early 2000s tricky to classify is that, from 2001-2004, only 2 animated shows premiered that were new franchises. Invader Zim and Danny Phantom. All the rest were built on brand recognition.
Tumblr media
The Fairly OddParents- created for Oh Yeah! Cartoons, pilot premiered in September 1998
Action League Now!- spin-off from KaBlam! (1996), standalone pre-series special premiered in March 1998
ChalkZone- created for Oh Yeah! Cartoons, pilots premiered in July 1998 (Oh Yeah!) and December 1999 (test run for full series)
The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius- shorts first started airing in February 2001, followed by the movie in December 2001, then the show in July 2002
All Grown Up!- spin-off from Rugrats (1991), backdoor pilot premiered in July 2001
My Life As a Teenage Robot- created for Oh Yeah! Cartoons, pilot premiered in December 1999
While Invader Zim’s pilot was produced in 1999, the franchise was introduced to the world in March 2001. Then a new NickToon franchise wouldn’t materialise again until 37 months later, with Danny Phantom in April 2004. And even then, Danny Phantom shared a creator and a lot of stylistic choices with The Fairly OddParents. I think this is why the first half of the 2000s is retroactively considered a period of relative stability for the NickToons, and the second half, with more ideas rapidly coming and going, is remembered as being shakier.
Does this change your perspective on early 2000s Nickelodeon? Does it make the output seem stronger or weaker in any way?
