Artwork from Anita Pallenberg gifted to Marianne Faithfull and currently up for bidding at sothebys.com. The following is from the listing:

"Pastel on paper, life artwork depicting a nude figure, signed, dated, and dedicated by the artist in black ink '"Fashion or no fashion / This is the question" / TO Marianne, forerunner of / All fashion - Love Anita', framed.

In the 1990s Anita took a fashion degree at Central Saint Martins, and took botanical drawing classes and life classes. She gave Marianne a number of drawings and watercolours over the years. This particular artwork hung in the spare room of Marianne’s former Paris apartment on Rue d’Anjou. It also can be seen in the sitting room of her later Montparnasse apartment in the book ‘The Maverick Soul, Inside the Lives & Homes of Eccentric, Eclectic & Free-spirited Bohemians’ by Miv Watts and Hugh Stewart.

Marianne looks back on her friendship with Anita Pallenberg and the present painting:

"People think of Anita in one way – a 60s muse, all that shit – but she was so much more than that. She was a really talented artist, as well as being a great actor. She was intelligent, funny, thoughtful, fearless… she truly didn’t give a fuck what anybody thought of her. Anita started doing all the things she could have done after stopping the drugs. Many years later she did a fashion degree [at Central Saint Martins, in the early 1990s] and she started to paint again and she did life classes. She did some wonderful watercolours – she painted Shell Cottage when I was still living in Ireland. She taught me so much about clothes and how to dress, really it was she that was ‘the forerunner of all fashion."

Marianne has recounted to friends that while they were very different personalities, sharing the formative experience of the '60s with boyfriends Mick and Keith forged a close bond. Anita remained one of Marianne's closest friends for the rest of their lives, speaking most days until Anita got ill in 2017."

Ok idea, the district kids and their potentional Guardians.

District 1 kids(Marvel and Glimmer): Ultra Magnus or Kup, either by Ultra Magnus strict nature or Kups story will humble them.

District 2 kids(Cato and Clove): Jazz or Mirage heck maybe even Starscream, both came from upper class before Cybertron fell to war so they can help break the kids out of their mindset.

District 3 kids(Calling them Chip and Wire): Soundwave, Shockwave, or Wheeljack. Techies have to stuck together

District 4 kids: Either Rodimus since he bonded with one of them, or Seaspray or Nautica

District 5 kids(Calling them, Jules and Watts): Jolt, a lesser known autobot with Electric powers

District 6 kids: Cyclonus, he's an alien jet he'd be so cool to them.

District 7 kids:

District 8 Kids: Swindle or Knockout, with Swindle trying to get them to but "authentic" 21st century clothing and Knockout just telling them hot Goss or making fun of Capital people's clothes.

District 9 kids: Honestly hard pick

Katniss and Peeta: Megatron or Optimus

I really love this idea! I think you made a lot if great pairings for the tributes and ideas of their personality and names👍

If I have to be honest though I sort of limited most of the potential tribute partners to members of the Lost Light Crew and the tributes I do know.

While your list is good I'm happy to show you what I had in mind.

District 1 and 2 are basically pariahs among the bots and their fellow tributes, especially Cato. Yes, the crew understands that these tributes are basically a bunch of brainwashed kids who have been manipulated to be killing machines by the start of the game but it still erks a lot of them that when Rodimus gave them a way out they still chose to attack the humans. A 12 year old even!

Not that the Career tributes mind since. their equally as hostil at first. They're scared and anxious, because in their minds they blew it. My headcanon for how the Career Tributes are that the mindset and mentality is that you "Come back a winner or you don't come back at all". They were expected to die in that arena or come out a victor. Nothing else. But there all still alive and the games are ruined. Yes, through no fault of their own but they doubt that it'll make a good explanation to their families or trainers. Even if they do make it home the only thing ready for them is disgrace.

But there are some bots that try to be friendly or at least cordial with them. Like you meantioned Ultra Magnus is a firm and strict character that will get them in line, his attitude may be reminiscent to their teachers. He keep an optic on them but also make sure their equally attended to. He may not approve of their mindset but refuses to discriminate against them.

Megatron would be a surprising presence around them, given that he did threaten to vaporize the group back at the arena. But it stems mostly from his own complicated feelings. Because to him, these Career Tributes were so much like his followers during the early stages of the war. How many young bright-eyed Cybertronians came to him looking to change the oppressed system and better their station in life only for him to turn them into ruthless war machines? How many did he indoctrinate into his cause and convince anyone who wasn't apart of it to be there enemies. To Megatron, he was the Districts, manipulating his own people to be machines of war instead of agents for change. There are actions he didn't regret when it came to the war, but robbing the futures of the next generation was something that will always weigh on him. So , he will check on the Career tributes to make sure there handling everything well for the most part. He's the one to notice how agitated and hostil they were and thought to bring Rung

Rung is the next and by far the most significant figure to the Career Tributes, he's the one to really sit down with them and try to help them sort their emotions and thoughts about their circumstances. He doesn't have any bias towards them or their Districts, and he does his best to let them vent and just listen to their thoughts.

District 3 and 5 would definitely be great friends with Brainstorm and Preceptor, given that both those districts have a background in technology and engineering. The tributes would love observing some of their projects and inventions. Learning how they work.

Though Preceptor and Brainstorm are careful of what they show them and what information is given. Since the last time advance technology and knowledge was left to the humans it caused a whole mess of problems.

Obviously, the District 4 tributes would get along with Rodimus with how friendly he was to the male tribute, who I named Luca Alberts.

With Rodimus being a fishing enthusiasts they swap more stories and advice on the topic. Not to meantion to Luca, Rodimus is the coolest person ever! Rex and orange and captain of his own ship he's definitely someone the 12 year old looks up too!

But Nautica, too, could be someone they like, especially with her interest in marine biology. She had always heard Earth had an interesting ecosystem within her sea. But she be disappointed to know that the tributes haven't been past the coast because the Capital doesn't allow them away too far from the mainland unless it's for specialty catches. A far cry from when humans sailed along the sea for decades. Not to meantion because of the past war and pollution a lot of species are now extinct.

The Rodimus make a promise to Luca that when things get better he let the human take him to all his favorite fishing spots. Nautica says that she wants to explore the ocean with their help.

Members of District 6 aren't the biggest fans of travel, but when it comes to the bots vehicle modes and watching them transform they are immediately interested.

To be honest I don't know what pairs to make up for 7-10, I think overall most of the Lost Light Crew are friendly to the remains tributes and try to make them as comfortable as they can. While there are some who might not be comfortable with organics, there are some who are generally interested in humans and their culture. Swerve has a huge collection of human movies and thinks it's a tragedy that none of the tributes have seen them! He schedules a daily movie night and ask Rewind to project the films for him which he doesn't too. The tributes were never really exposed to media and entertainment like movies and TV shows, things like animation are like magic to them. Most things like that were reserved for the Capital people and for most of them, they didn't have the luxury of media given their poverish backgrounds and how most had to join their Districts industry to support their families. Being with Rodimus and their crew brought a break to there mostly labor focused life. Though they still worry about their families and friends and what their rescue from the arena means for them. Rung is brought in to help them process their concerns and overall trauma concerning the Reaping and their experience before the games.

As for District 8, I've thought of them a lot! Rue would be the apple of most of the crews optics! Especially that of Tailgate and Cyclonus.

Tailgate has never seen humans outside of Swerves films and can't get over how tiny and cute they are. He doesn't make the greatest impression after the humans are allowed out of the tank and he tries to hold one, marveling how much smaller they are to him. Most of the tributes ran from him but Rue stayed and badly said how cute she thought he was!

"I'm not cute! I'm fierce! " Tailgate objected, but from then on he always hung around Rue. He showed her different parts of the ship and carried her with on his hoverboard, the halls often filled with Tailgate and Rues excited cheers.

And when you have Tailgate you get Cyclonus. While the purple mech adores Rue too, he makes sure to remind Tailgate to please be careful with her as humans are fragile creature. Though Rue often test those boundaries.

Once Cyclonus was having a conversation with Tailgate only for the minibot to burst out laughing, confused Cyclonus realized that Rue had climbed all the way to his shoulder blade without him noticing. He immediately startled and snatched Rue in his shoulders scolding her and Tailgate how dangerous that was, that Rue could have fallen or got caught in one of the jabs in his armor and crushed.

Cyclonus and Tailgate are both taken aback at how Rue gushes over what a cute couple they are!

Despite her mischievous nature, Cyclonus genuinely does like Rue and is protective of her. This even extends to her fellow tribute Thresh, these two share a stoic nature and protective streak that comes with the understanding that their strength is what keeps those close to them safe.

Thresh also finds a surprising friend in Whirl. The cyclops bot thinking that Thresh was impressive with his strength for a human is and that silent attitude of his made him extra cool. Basically, Whirl saw it as a challenge to break through Thresh shell. It started with just gruff replies to the helicopters' questions, to warning against certain actions Whirl thought would be "fun," to finally being the reluctant voice of reason to Whirls shenigans. Given Thresh's background, he probably worked hard every day from an early age to help support his sister and grandmother. His district not giving him the option to have fun or just experience his youth. Whirl is chaos incarnent, and while that can be exhausting it brings out a side of Thresh he didn't know to how much he enjoyed participating in Whirls games.

Now we get to District 12! With Katniss and Peeta!

Because of Peeta's injury he and Katniss spent some time in the medbay with Ratchet. The medical comes off as gruff and stern but Katniss can't help but respect him. He reminded her of her own mother in his quiet concentration when it came to healing others. Ratchet does his best to assist Katniss in addressing Peeta's wound and in intent at making sure the teen is well treated.

Peeta often likes to joke or try to make friendly conversation with Ratchet though he's often met with a dry rely and orders to rest instead of chattering on. Not that Peeta is detered and keeps a bright smile while under Ratchets care.

Drift is another bit that Oeeta surprisingly gets close with, given the former visits Ratchets medbay to check up on the bot and interact with the two humans who have joined him there. He likes talking with Peeta and wishes him a speedy recovery, knowing Peeta got his injury while defending a younger tribute Drift sees Peeta as honorable.

Though things get awkward when Drift mentions how sweet it was that Katniss was treating Peeta and says that they have a beautiful story. Believing that the pair were getting closer romantically because of seeing Peeta's confession on the interviews. This gets a frown from Katniss and a sheepish look from Peeta.

After his recovery, Peeta is allowed out of the medbay he makes another friend in Ten. While Ten can't voice much Peeta sees a fellow creative spirit in him when shown the mechs collection of hand made figures and the flowers he's drawn on himself.

Peeta impresses Ten by drawing items on his armor skillfully, with the enthusiasm he never had when decorating his shops cakes and cookies. Tens more than happy to share his paints with the tiny human.

Going back to Katniss, there's another bot she gets close to and that's Megatron.

At the beginning Katniss believed Megatron was the same as his past self that attempted to take over Earth. Brutal and bloodthirsty but over time her expectations of him were dismissed.

Yes, he came off as cold and standoffish, but more than anything, he was respectful to all the tributes and was observant of their needs, even the Careers who again he had threatened to vaporize.

Seeing this Katniss finally asked him why he even tried with them, his response "Because there as much victims to this system as you and the rest are"

Slowly but surely, Katniss begins to hang out in the side lines with the former tyrant. She was never one for socializing and eventually just ended up spending time with Megatron more often then not. Just silently staying in each others presence.

To her surprise one day Megatron ask her about her district, that he understands that they came from a mining background and he admits that he came from a similar industry.

This takes Katniss by surprise, she could never imagine the "Emperor of Destruction" working in dusty mine shaft. They share their lifestyle experiences, comparing the disparaging life and workload of the miners, eventually the topic drifts to Katnisses father who died in a collapse.

"It probably didn't take them long to move you all to a new hole to dig." he chuckled dryly, but at Katniss silence, he backtracks. "Apologies.... I understand your grief, I too have lost many a friend to accidents in the mines"

Megatron admits to Katniss that even before the arrival to the arena, he and the crew had observed them through their network. He saw her volunteer for her sister so she wouldn't have been taken. And despite Rodimus's intervention, she very well could have saved her from death. He tells her she's an admirable human and sister.

Katniss might tear up and ask if she'll ever see her family or Earth again.

"I promise to do everything in my power to help you and the rest of the humans return safely home one day"

There's another bit on board that also seems to gravitate to Katniss, with how close she's getting to Megatron its no wonder that Ravage takes an interest in her.

Ravage at first makes Katniss and the other tributes nervous, being seen as a large wild animal at first. Startling them as he actually speaks.

But as he starts to wander near Katniss more Peeta starts to joke that Ravage is possibly mistaking her for "catnip" instead of Katniss, the girl is not amused.

La rage de vivre hante chaque pas dans les quartiers sud. Responsables de la crasse et de la violence qui infusent à Watts et Compton, pour certains. Ultime rempart entre une population épuisée et un monde trop prompt à juger, en réalité. Il n'y a plus qu'eux pour tenir les rues stigmatisées de Los Angeles. Pour nourrir les plus démunis, protéger ceux qui ne parviennent plus à se défendre et s'insurger des regards accusateurs que l'on pose sur les âmes du coin. Le gang est une mère zélée qui offre et prend tout à ses enfants. Qu'on respecte pourtant, en dépit de la dureté avec laquelle elle vous traite. Et tant pis si la drogue se fait première source de vie, dans son giron. Tant pis s'il faut prendre aux autres ce que l'on ne possède pas mais dont on a envie ou besoin pour s'assurer de tenir jusqu'au lendemain. Pourvu qu'on tienne et qu'on célèbre un jour de plus ce droit de vivre.

De quelle architecture parle-t-on?

En 1967, en France, on n'enseignait pas, au sens actuel, l'architecture. Rue Bonaparte, les étudiants grattaient en atelier, élevaient des façades avec un accès à la bibliothèque, aucune notion d'urbanisme et quelques papes de la modernité qui leur faisaient reluquer vers les ingénieurs pour trouver leur binôme breveteur. L'architecture des UP de la réforme de 68 est morte-né, annonce faite par la revue esprit en 69 dans le numéro "La mort de l'architecte". D'un point de vue sociologique, l'architecte change de peau à chaque mutation de la société.

Negroponte, de son côté, anticipait la dissolution de la geste architecturale dans le logiciel informatique, qu'on observe à l’œuvre. L'architecte est un ludion malhabile qui s'enfle de prétentions socio-politiques pour remonter à la surface et se plombe de métrique financière pour calculer ses volumes et ses matériaux. Rester entre deux eaux est la norme depuis la scission d'avec le vernaculaire, à la période… Gothique? Dessiner, c'est tricher et la place de cet architecte impérial, aristocrate, bourgeois, est directement inscrite dans le paradigme culturel du moment. Du côté rural, point d'architecte. C'est l'agglomération urbaine qui demande des plans d'ensemble et un standard, répondant à une volonté politique.

Alors bio-régionalisme?

D'emblée, considérer un concept américain, qui provient d'un territoire totalement urbanisé au 19eme siècle est dangereux. On a affaire à des génocides successifs très brutaux où la nature et les populations sont détruites directement et quasiment sans règles. L'esprit frontière, la liberté individuelle et le port d'arme changent les relations citoyennes des régionalistes isolés. L'Amérique construisait en carré des périphéries ségrégationnistes sur des terrains volés aux indiens, ce qu'on faisait dans nos colonies avec les "autochtones". Les années 60 sont ceux des luttes décoloniales, traduites par celles des droits civiques aux USA, émeutes urbaines de Watts et des campus américains. Les gouvernements occidentaux vont injecter des milliards dans des réponses plus ou moins provisoires engageant une nouvelle forme de pacification de la jeunesse, le "Soft Power".

Celui-ci ne signifie pas de ne pas faire la guerre, au contraire mais on la fait à l'extérieur ou par proxy.

C'est la Banque Publique qui crée la manne en 70, qui va entraîner la nouvelle génération d'architectes, dopée à la sociologie et aux sciences humaines et émoustillée par le béton armé répétitif, le pattern, dans les projections les plus folles, l'expérimentation. Ça s'est évidemment terminé dès 74, et de là se déclinent les ensembles urbains les plus désastreux qu'on ai vu en France et ailleurs.

Des bourgs entiers datant du 15eme au 18eme siècles, des forêts et maraichages passés à la lame du POS, façon plan voisin. Mais, attraction du pouvoir oblige, le sociologue et l'urbaniste se barrent du côté du génie plus affirmé et du vrai argent. L'architecte se remet à blablater sans fin, la chemise ouverte sur son bronzage, montrant des perspectives léchées, attendant le moment d'allumer la bécane pour lancer le modèle Autocad. Où en était le concept, l'habit subtil délivré en ergo-éco-bio-nomie? Blabla… Gainsbourg et son gainsborrow avaient pris le ferry boat. Le grand navire retourné, le vaisseau amiral.

Quel imaginaire local pourrait défaire le nœud de paternité aillant accouché d'un monstre mou et toxique, dissimulé sous notre volonté sympathique de faire le bien la plus ferme?

LÉGENDES DU JAZZ

HORACE TAPSCOTT, UN INNOVATEUR D’EXCEPTION

“He saved Los Angeles when it comes to progressive music. Because if you were going to get involved in that, you had to come through Horace Tapscott.”

Né le 6 avril 1934 à Houston, au Texas, Horace Tapscott s’était installé à Los Angeles avec sa famille à l’âge de neuf ans. Issue d’une famille musicale, Tapscott était le fils de Mary Lou Malone, une tubiste et pianiste de stride.

C’est également à l’époque de son arrivée à que Tapscott avait commencé à apprendre le piano et le trombone. Durant son adolescence, Tapscott avait joué du trombone avec de futures sommités du jazz comme le saxophoniste Frank Morgan, le trompettiste Don Cherry et le batteur Billy Higgins.

DÉBUTS DE CARRIÈRE

Après avoir fait son service militaire avec la US Air Force au Wyoming, Tapscott était retourné à Los Angeles et avait joué du trombone avec différents groupes, dont ceux de Lionel Hampton de 1959 à 1961. Tapscott avait abandonné le trombone peu après pour se consacrer au piano.

Tapscott n’avait jamais tellement apprécié la vie de tournée. Lors d’une escale à Los Angeles en 1961, Tapscott était finalement sorti de l’autobus de tournée d’Hampton pour la dernière fois. Comme Tapscott l’avait expliqué au cours d’une entrevue qu’il avait accordée en 1982: “No one discovered I was gone until they got to Arizona.’’

Toujours en 1961, Tapscott avait formé son propre groupe appelé le Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, une formation qui avait pour but de préserver, de développer et de faire la promotion de la musique afro-américaine tout en prêchant les vertus de l’unité (ujamaa en langue swahili). Le groupe était formé à l’origine de Lester Robertson au trombone, d’Arthur Blythe, de Jimmy Woods et de Guido Sinclair aux saxophones, de David Bryant à la contrebasse et de Bill Madison à la batterie. Caractérisé par une instrumentation inusitée rappelant ses influences africaines, le groupe était souvent composé de deux ou trois bassistes, de deux ou trois percussionnistes et d’au moins un batteur. Outre ses influences africaines, le groupe s’inscrivait directement dans la lignée de la musique de pionniers du jazz comme  Art Tatum, Duke Ellington et Thelonious Monk, aussi bien que d’innovateurs contemporains comme Andrew Hill et Randy Weston

En 1963, le groupe s’était joint à une organisation plus vaste appelée la Underground Musicians Association (UGMA) qui avait adopté plus tard le nom d’Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA). Mais l’implication de Tapscott dépassait largement la musique. Lors des émeutes de Watts en 1965, le groupe se produisait sur un camion plateforme situé au milieu de la route lorsqu’il avait été interpellé par des policiers armés.

Très impliqué dans une communauté particulièrement marquée par le racisme, le groupe se produisait régulièrement dans les églises, les centres communautaires, les prisons et les hôpitaux souvent pour une bouchée de pain et remettait ses rares revenus au mouvement des Black Panthers, ce qui avait lui avait valu d’être surveillé étroitement par le FBI.

Le groupe avait aussi permis à plusieurs musiciens de la relève de se produire sur scène pour la première fois. Il avait également regroupé les musiciens de rue et efait connaître les arts aux jeunes enfants du ghetto. Parmi les membres successifs du groupe de Tapscott, on remarquait de futurs grands noms du jazz comme  Arthur Blythe, Stanley Crouch, Butch Morris, Wilber Morris, David Murray, Jimmy Woods, Kamau Daaood, Adele Sebastian, Phil Ranelin,  Sabir Mateen, Nate Morgan et Guido Sinclair. Doté d’une remarquable longévité, le groupe était demeuré en activité jusqu’à la mort de Tapscott en 1999.

Même si le 50e anniversaire du groupe était passé pratiquement inaperçu, les membres de la formation étaient déterminés à ce que la célébration de ses soixante années d’existence ne connaîtraient pas le même sort. À l’occasion de son 60e anniversaire de fondation en 2021, le groupe avait fait l’objet d’une compilation intitulée “60 Years’’ qui comprenait essentiellement des enregistrements inédits étalés sur les six décennies d’existence du groupe. Le saxophoniste Michel Session avait expliqué: ‘’We were like, ‘We’re going to make a product that will introduce a bunch of people to this band in a way that’s comprehensive and concise. This is for us, by us. We wanted to present something to the people from the band that can directly pay the band and support the band, and then be turned into other projects. It’s the first time the Ark has been able to do that, really.” 

La pièce "The Golden Pearl’’, qui avait été écrite en hommage à la grand-mère de Tapscott, mettait en vedette le jeune Arthur Blythe ainsi que le tromboniste Lester Robertson (aussi connu sous le surnom de Lately) et le bassiste David Bryant, un vétéran qui était toujours avec le groupe après avoir joint ses rangs trente ans plus tôt. L’album était également un hommage à un ex-membre du groupe, Herbert Baker, qui était décédé dans un accident automobile à l’âge de seulement vingt ans.

Six décennies après sa fondation, Session croyait que la mission du groupe n’avait pas vraiment changé et qu’il devait continuer d’innover et d’aller de l’avant. Session avait précisé: “I want to get weirder. I want to get back to how Horace did shows at prisons and high schools and colleges for free. We could sell out Carnegie Hall and then come home and do the same set for 50, 60 cats. I want that balance. It sounds impossible, but we can do it.”

Lorsqu’il s’était joint au groupe, le chanteur Dwight Trible faisait partie d’une autre formation, mais il désirait absolument faire partie de l’Arkestra. Deux semaines après s’être produit avec le chanteur dans le cadre du même festival, Tapscott avait invité Trible à se joindre au groupe. Trible racontait: “He said, ‘I want you to come to my house tomorrow at 3 o’clock,’ and he hung up the phone. And just about every concert that Horace played from that time on, I sang with him in some capacity.” Le saxophoniste Michael Session s’était joint à l’Arkestra durant son adolescence. Il poursuivait: “I’m 13 and my first gig with the Ark is with Azar Lawrence. It’s actually a very humbling thing to be a medium, a conduit for the ancestors trying to spread this vibration as far and as hard as possible.” Session avait fait partie plus tard des groupes de Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner et Freddie Hubbard.

Même s’il avait enregistré un premier album intitulé “The Giant Is Awakened’’ avec un quintet en 1969, Tapscott il n’avait publié un premier album avec l’Arkestra qu’en 1978. Intitulé ‘’The Call’’, l’album était un mélange de bebop, de free jazz, de ballades très influencées par le blues et d’arrangements orchestraux. Comprenant le grand succès ‘’Flight 17’’, l’album mettait notamment en vedette le légendaire contrebassiste Red Callender.

DERNIÈRES ANNÉES

En 1995, l’Arkestra s’était produit dans le cadre du festival de Moers en Allemagne où il avait remporté un grand succès. Tapscott était sur le point s’obtenir enfin la reconnaissance qu’il méritait lorsqu’il était mort d’un double cancer du cerveau et des poumons le 27 février 1999 à l’âge de soixante-quatre ans.

Le lendemain de sa mort, Tapscott devait faire l’objet d’un concert en son honneur au parc Leimart de Los Angeles. Une plaque en hommage à Tapscott a d’ailleurs été érigée dans le parc sur laquelle on pouvait lire: "Horace Tapscott, the local pianist and organizer whose ensemble, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, gave many musicians their first gigs and helped heal a community impacted by racism." Les archives, arrangements et enregistrements de Tapscott ont été légués en 2003 par sa veuve Cecilia Tapscott à la bibliothèque de l’Université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA) sous le nom de UCLA Horace Tapscott Jazz Collection. Les admirateurs de Tapscott avaient fondé deux compagnies de disques en son honneur dans les années 1970 et 1980, Interplay et Nimbus, avec lesquelles il avait enregistré.

Un an avant la mort de Tapscott en 1999, l’Arkestra avait enregistré un album live intitulé Why Don’t You Listen ? Enregistré au Los Angeles County Museum of Art, l’album comprenait en exergue le leitmotiv caractéristique: ‘’Notre musique est contributive plutôt que compétitive.’’ Sur la pièce ‘’Little Africa’’, on retrouvait également une citation du Black National Anthem qui stipulait: ‘’Que notre joie s’élève haut dans les cieux qui écoutent.’’

Le site Allmusic.com. décrivait ainsi le style de Tapscott: "His pianistic technique was hard and percussive, likened by some to that of Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols and every bit as distinctive. In contexts ranging from freely improvised duos to highly arranged big bands, Tapscott exhibited a solo and compositional voice that was his own." De son côté, le saxophoniste Michael Session avait commenté: “He was way more interested in feeling and sounding like himself with his friends, who were also really unique.’’

Très peu connu en dehors de Los Angeles, Tapscott avait fait très peu de tournées et n’avait pas enregistré avec des compagnies de disques majeures. Reconnaissant le rôle de pionnier de Tapscott, le chanteur Dwight Trible, qui se produisait avec le groupe depuis 1987, avait ajouté:  “He saved Los Angeles when it comes to progressive music. Because if you were going to get involved in that, you had to come through Horace Tapscott.” 

Au cours des dernières années, des musiciens comme le rappeur vedette Kendrick Lamar, le saxophoniste Kamasi Washington, le bassiste Thundercat et le producteur et multi-instrumentiste Terrace Martin avaient contribué à raviver l’intérêt pour la musique de Tapscott. À la même époque, plusieurs compagnies de disques avaient également réédité les albums de Tapscott. Comme Washington l’avait expliqué en 2015:  ’’J'aime sa musique, sa philosophie et tout ce qu'il a fait pour la communauté dans laquelle j'ai grandi’’. Quant à la clarinettiste de Chicago, Angel Bat Dawid, elle avait commenté: ’’Je suis bénie de pouvoir jouer la musique d'Horace Tapscott, l'un de mes héros.’’ Une dizaine d’années auparavant, le rappeur Madblib avait également rendu hommage à Tapscott dans le cadre de l’album Horace enregistré avec le Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble.
