Note
can you do one where the reader has *terrible* periods (im talkin cramps, headaches, while nine yeards) but does their best to push through them and how 141 + ale, rudy, and konig react to them <3 (also i really do like the way you did your masterlist its v neat and put together)
Literally me every month 😭 this one’s for the nightmare period squad, I love y’all and I’m right there with you (thank you love!) (I’m sorry for leaving Rudy and Ale out, it’s a little much for me I’m so sorry 😭)
Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley:
He’s pretty attuned to you, he has a sense when something’s up, so he decides to keep an eye on you throughout the day
You’re sweating a little more than usual and looking a little clammy when you’re on the treadmill (hoping beyond hope that working out will help) (… it doesn’t)
He’s watching you during the briefing, your hands are clenching your abdomen, your breathing is a little irregular, and your left eye twitches occasionally. You’re masking your discomfort and you’re doing it well enough to fool everyone else but him. He sees you make a detour to the clinic on base and walk out with a small heated water bottle pressed against your stomach
He stops by your room to see that your usual coffee is replaced with peppermint tea, the lights are dim, and you’re sitting at your desk, curled over the table with paperwork scattered under your head. He announced himself with a knock and you bolted upright, you winced almost immediately
“Easy love, it’s just me.” He chuckled, “Doin’ alright?” He eyed the tea and turned the bottle of pills in his hand,
“Of course, always.” You we’re out of breath, “Why?”
“Don’t make me ask.”
“Ugh fine. It’s my period, I’m sorry.” He tossed the bottle in his hands at you and you caught it not very gracefully.
“Don’t be. You’ve done more in your state than most of them do normally. Just… take a rest. Take your meds. You’ve done enough.”
John ‘Soap’ MacTavish:
He doesn’t really notice, you’re unfortunately good at hiding your symptoms (save for the obvious bleeding and the wrappers in the trash)
Honestly he’s amazed you can go about your day so effortlessly with all that going on
He’s watching you catch up on some chores when he starts to notice the wince in your eyes when you move a certain way, you’re putting away laundry fresh from the dryer and pressing the warm clothes tightly against your lower abdomen
You’re in the kitchen and you’re massaging your temples, breathing heavily, leaning against the counter, shaking your head and continuing with your task
“Alright, bonnie, that’s enough. Let get you set up.”
“Johnny, baby, I’m fine.”
“Sure ya are, I’m just taking care of that fine arse for you since you won’t.” He winked at you, he walked you back to bed, grabbing your heating pad and menstrual relief pills from the bathroom.
“Take it easy, hen, let’s get some movies going, yeah?”
John Price:
He knows your tells. Not only because he lives with you and sees the wrappers in the trash, but because he can feel the shift
You start to take on tasks that you’d normally pass on, whether it’s to prove to him or yourself that you can muscle through it
You don’t need to prove anything to him sweetheart, he knows how strong you are, just let him take care of you
He tells you as much but you wave him away and continue with what you were doing
He gets a little frustrated because he knows you’re suffering, he knows how hard your periods hit you, just let him help you damn it
So he sets up a little trap, he asks you to help him in the bedroom, and being the big strong girl you are, you go in ready to help but he wrap you in a big blanket and swings you over his shoulder, he set you down on the bed, tucked under the blankets, half-heartedly glaring at him.
“Rest, darling, please.”
Kyle ‘Gaz’ Gerrick:
He knows how bad your periods are and he doesn’t let you move an inch out of bed, he’s super doting, and he spoils you absolutely rotten
Even if you insist you can muscle through it, he won’t let you
Dishes need to be done? He’s got it. Groceries? Instacart that mf. Laundry? Say no more queen. Gotta make dinner? No you don’t.
He’s got your heating pad cranked up as high as you need it to be, your comfort show or movie is playing and he’s got your meds and some water ready for you when you need
Period care king tbh.
König:
Schatz please, you only make it worse, he knows that and you know that, but he’ll always remind you
He lets you press on about your day, doing whatever you can to distract yourself from the pain, but as soon as he sees you clutch your stomach and double over when you think he can’t see you, he steps
“Liebling, please you’re hurting me.”
“König, don’t start.” You sighed exasperated, he’s willing to deal with a lot but when it comes to your well-being, he doesn’t fuck around,
“Beg your pardon, schatz?”
Oops.
“Fine. Do your worst.” You relented, he smiled mockingly at you (not in a malicious way),
“That’s what I thought.”
You’re buried under blankets, your electric heating pad spread over your abdomen, water and medicine is on your nightstand, and you’re so grateful König knows you as well as he does.

Not Alive, Nor Dead
[PREV PART] [AO3]
Hello! I'm back! I planned the next 3 chapters on the plane, so I thought writing would be easier.
I was wrong. Chapter got hands. Anyways hope you enjoy more of concussed Soap lmao
Alejandro led them to the main complex, through a series of roads connecting the prison. Ghost kept an eye on the sky, watching Garrick shoot Shadows from above.
“Bravo!” the Sergeant radios in, “Shadows approaching your position, I don’t have a clear shot. Incoming from your 9, Ghost.”
He and Rudy exchange a look, “copy, keep thinning them out.” Ghost replies, taking note of Soap’s glassy stare.
“We got hostiles inbound?” Johnny asks excitedly, wiggling his fingers, “I’ll take care o’ them LT, you can kick back and relax-”
“Oh no, Sergeant,” Ghost grabs the strap on the back of Soap’s vest, “you’re staying right here with me until your head is screwed on right.”
He ignores Johnny’s useless attempts at persuading Ghost to let him go, and turns to the Vaqueros, “you can take care of a few Shadows, right? Me and Johnny can go check the CCTV.”
Alejandro smirks at the bumbling Sergeant in his hands, “you got it, hermano. We’ll meet you there.”
Rudy spots a soldier rushing towards them, running ahead and instantly freezing the Shadow. He grabs the rifle the unhuman dropped and cracks it down on the frozen soldier, shattering him.
The Sergeant Major throws the gun to Alejandro, shouting at Ghost and Soap, “go!”
He doesn’t need to be told twice. Ghost drags Johnny towards the room he remembers marked ‘Security’ on Rudy’s map.
“I could’a destroyed ‘em oll in a second, Ghostie…” Johnny moans.
Ghost sighs for the twentieth time since entering the room, “I know, Johnny.” He notes of the several cells full of men in block B, Shadows swarming the halls. The Vaqueros.
Soap gives him what could be ‘puppy-eyes’ from the chair Ghost has put him in timeout in (his words), “yer so mean, Simon.”
He looks up from the monitor he’s been fiddling with to level his Sergeant with a stare, “I know. Now focus on healing your bloody brain so you can actually help.”
Soap opens his mouth to retort, but he abruptly closes it, eyes widening.
“...Johnny?”
Soap’s cheeks flush, “Simon, I am so sorry, I don’t know what teh fuck I was saying…” Johnny rubs at his eyes, “fuckin’ talkin’ about how pretty yer eyelashes are.”
Ghost huffs, smile stretching his hidden lips, “you said eyes before. Good to know you like those too.”
Johnny looks like he got caught with his pants down, before his usual sense of confidence takes over, “I can tell ye I like a whole lot more than just that-”
“If I have to hear you muppets flirt one more time, I’m going to consider staying in this fuckin’ shithole, fucking hell…”
“Price?!” Ghost and Soap exclaim together, “Where are you?!”
“Graves isolated me, the fuckin’ bastard…” the Captain grumbles in their minds, “you got Gaz with you, correct?”
“Yes sir.” Ghost confirms.
“Good. You two, get Farah and Alex out, they should be in block C. Graves got Shadows trained on Alex at all times to keep Farah in check, so you’ll need to work quiet and fast.”
Ghost switches cameras, finding block C and the two revenants.
Soap’s voice fills his mind, “what about you, Captain?”
“Kyle will get me, there’s a window right in front of my cell. Tell him to get to the tallest building, block A.”
“Copy, glad to hear you’re solid, Price.” Ghost gets off the computer, patting Johnny’s shoulder, “I’ll inform Vargas and Parra of the Vaqueros’ location and head for Karim and Keller.”
“Good copy. Keep yourselves safe.”
“Out here.”
Rudy and Alejandro meet them on the way out, both clearly frazzled and adrenaline-fueled. “Found anyone?” Rudy asks between pants.
“Vaqueros are on block B.” Ghost switches his comms on, “Garrick, Price talked to us, he’s on the top of block A, should be a window. Get him and meet us at-”
“The front gates.” Alejandro finishes, “there are several trucks for us to use, the Vaqueros will clear the way out.”
“Copy, on my way.” Gaz relays.
Soap checks his rifle’s ammo one last time, “me and Ghost’ll go for Farah and Alex, we’ll join the fight on the gates.”
Rudy pats both their shoulders, nodding assuredly, and turns to leave with Alejandro towards block B.
Soap smiles up at him, a dangerous edge to the way fire licks around his gun, “time for us to wipe out some Shadows, aye?”
Ghost smirks, “on you, Sergeant.”
Johnny is truly a thing of beauty on the field. A firestorm, unstoppable blaze, vaporizing dark figures as easily as breathing.
Ghost watches his six, taking down any stray Shadows making a move at him, but for the most part he gets to admire the Sergeant, the flowing way he explodes soldiers.
It would scare him, how beautiful Johnny is. If it wasn’t so distractedly brilliant.
“Clear!” Soap calls ahead, fire ebbing between his fingertips, dark marks on the walls all that’s left of his enemies.
Ghost hums, “good work, Sergeant. Our revenants should be right up ahead, stay sharp.”
Johnny grins, his step a little more energetic when he rounds the corner, “aye sir.”
Ghost and Soap reach block C, marked by huge letters on the walls. They both drop to a crouch, finding a single cell with about a dozen Shadows guarding it.
Ghost holds up one, then two fingers, pointing ahead. He closes his fist and Johnny nods, tensing up in preparation.
His Sergeant waits for his mark.
Ghost opens his hand, motioning forward.
Shadows erupt into smoke, metal bars sizzle and melt. The fight is over in a blink of an eye.
He walks over dark soot on the dirty prison floor, approaching Commander Karim, who has a bewildered expression on her face. She and Keller are tied to chairs, facing each other.
“Lieutenant.” she tilts her head.
Ghost whips out a knife, swiftly cutting through her bindings, “Commander.” Johnny went ahead and freed Alex as well.
“That’s some serious firepower you got there, Soap. You sure you don’t want to come with us to Urzikstan?” Alex jokes as he rubs at his raw wrists.
Johnny laughs, smiling at Ghost, “sorry, got previous reservations.”
“Bummer.” the American sighs, taking the rejection easily.
Ghost grabs a pistol that looks decently unburnt and tosses it to Farah, “the Vaqueros are working on clearing a path for our extraction, we’re going to join as additional support. Sergeant Garrick is getting the Captain.”
Commander Karim sharply nods after checking the gun, “we’ll come with you, I got unfinished business with that dog Graves.” she looks at Alex, who finds a gun for himself as well.
Ghost presses the button on his radio, “Rudy, we got Karim and Keller, on our way to you. What’s your status?”
Gunshots sound through the tinny mic before he answers, “Graves is trying to push us back, we’re holding currently! Backup will be appreciated!”
The four of them start towards the Vaqueros, “on our way, Parra. Hold strong.”
“Always, Fantasma.”
Soap turns on his comms as well, “Gaz? Got the Captain?”
“No- will try- around-” Garrick’s voice cuts off, the wind too strong for it to come through.
“Bad copy, Sergeant, repeat.” Ghost joins on their line.
“Working on it!”
“Copy, get to the gate once you’re done.”
The front gates are a mess of powers, ice and fire blooming on the dirt road. The battlefield sounds almost deafening.
Alex and Farah run ahead, Keller disappearing from view and the Commander right in tow, deflecting bullets left and right. Ghost can see Rudy ahead, turning Shadows into ice sculptures for Alejandro to shatter with well-placed shots.
Ghost grabs Soap before he can join them, “stick close, Sergeant.”
“Yes sir.” Johnny doesn’t even look up, running and plowing through hails of bullets. Ghost goes off to the edges of the battle, picking off stragglers and sending them to the void. He only lets Limbo out for a second, the victims taking hold of the Shadows and dragging them back with them.
From the outside, it looks like they were swollen by darkness. An act that has earned Ghost his terrifying reputation.
Soap spots him from beyond the field, throwing him a thumbs up, “good work, LT! Fuckin’ beautiful, sir.”
“Keep it tactical, Sergeant.” he mutters as he takes two more Shadows off this realm.
“Tactical compliments, sir. It’s all the rage these days.” Johnny snickers, and he rolls his eyes fondly.
The fight is missing someone… “Garrick, status.”
Gaz’s line is dead. Ghost stops in his tracks, “Gaz, sitrep, now.” nothing.
Fuck. He switches to the main line, “anyone had eyes on Gaz in the last 15 minutes?”
“Negative, saw him go into the tower at block A about 30 minutes ago.” Alejandro replies.
Ghost’s heart races faster, his voice level, “I’m going to go find them, Soap, on me-”
The Shadows on the field start laughing, voice garbling into a demonic cackling.
“Took you long enough to notice, Lieutenant.”
Ghost grabs the nearest Shadow, “what the fuck did you do with them?” he coldly smashes the Shadow’s head with his knee.
The broken body falls, Graves’ voice still clear, “you want your little teammates? Better come to the courtyard, Ghost… oh, and bring the Sergeant with you, would ya? I’ve got a few… choice words to exchange with him.”
Ghost stomps the soldier’s head, shutting the American up for good. He locks eyes with Johnny, heart attempting to beat out of his chest.
“Clock’s ticking, Simon Riley…” Shadows whisper around him.
Soap runs to him, face confused and enraged, “what did he say, Simon?! Where are Price and Gaz?”
“Courtyard…”
Johnny looks back, before staring at Ghost, “well? What are we waiting for?”
Sometimes, Ghost feels like his gut can tell the future. With the way it churned and turned before he was thrown into that grave. How it ached to spill out when Soap asked him to promise, sign a death sentence on his Sergeant.
In the ice burning his insides, as he watches stars reflect in Johnny’s eyes, awaiting the command, ready to follow him into certain doom. Right into the snake’s den.
Ghost take Soap’s hand, silently starting to walk towards the courtyard.
His gut screams at him to stop, to curl bloodied hands around his Sergeant, protect him from malicious shadows.
Ghost’s mind, however, a soldier’s, a leader’s, tells him to keep walking.
The Shadows ignore them, splitting before them like the Red Sea.
Johnny pulls at his hand, making him meet his eyes.
“We’re connected now, Simon. In a way Graves, hell no one else, can understand.” he smiles softly, “they can’t separate us.”
His words hold so much conviction, so much confidence and yet also care, the ice in his gut melts.
The thawed water tells Ghost he will live to regret that.
“We go together.” Simon squeezes a burning hand.
Fire binds them, an unbreakable vow. “Together.”
Graves sees Soap and Ghost happy and asks himself "how can I ruin their day this time?"

Donald Trump is a stable cyber genius. For years he has been talking about how Hillary Clinton nefariously “acid washed” her email servers. He was told by cybersecurity “expert,” Rudy Giuliani, that this was an expensive process that only the guilty employ.
First, acid wash is a denim treatment. These 80s ladies know what I’m talkin’ bout.
Tumblr media
There is no file deletion process referred to as “acid washing.”
There is, however, software called BleachBit. And it’s commonly used in the IT world and is not nefarious at all. It is basic security. It even has a cute little icon.
Tumblr media
And it’s also free. Much like WinRAR, it will ask you for some money, but you can close that box and continue using the software without limitation. Whenever I see that box pop up I always feel sad that no one ever donates. Then I close the box and start extracting my totally legal media files.
I digress...
Normally when you delete a file you are just telling your computer that space on the hard drive can be overwritten. The data is still there until new data takes its place. Which means ne'er-do-wells can recover that data if you don’t WASH IT IN BOILING ACID. Or use a program like BleachBit that will overwrite garbage data over and over in the space where deleted files used to be. Making it nearly impossible to recover what was overwritten. Again, this is a pretty standard security practice in IT. Using this software is not always an effort to perform a shady coverup.
Somehow, in Donald’s failing mind, he converted BleachBit to acid wash. And no one has corrected him in 3 years. So he keeps talking about acid washing and people go along with it.
Which means Hillary’s servers must now look something like this.
Tumblr media
Though I’m fairly certain Rudy and Donald think Hillary physically dipped her email servers in acid.

Too Late the Hero
It was Harvey Dent who uttered the famous lines, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” A foreshadowing statement, as Dent later on personifies his very words when he goes on to become Two Face in the “The Dark Knight” Batman movies.
Tumblr media
This statement cannot be any truer, and we all can recount both real-life and fictional characters who easily represent this notion. The true-to-life “villains” we know of today may have actually started out as idealists, heroes, or savior-like archetypes that we used to looked up to and looked past whatever side blemishes they also possessed in order to justify their actions. I think the best contemporary example of this – is the person whom Filipinos notoriously love to discuss nowadays – the person that needs no introduction, President Duterte.
About to Croak?
President Duterte has recently been the talk of the town all the more when rumors circulated that he may have contracted COVID-19, while other rumors pointedly said that he was already on his deathbed. To augment such rumors, it was said that he may have allegedly even flown to Singapore to have himself checked. His office was quick to quash any such news by posting proof of life photos of the President, where he is seen to be eating a meal with the first family in Davao. Well, one thing we can all agree on however, is that he did not look his best.
The more significant and underlying message in this recent raucous is that, the general consensus on social media is that many had their fingers crossed for a new President. It looks like Duterte’s star power is quickly fading.
Tumblr media
RUDY and RODY
I was reminded of a conversation that a friend and I had around three weeks ago. During our usual, light political banter, I suddenly remembered how my parents used to compare President Duterte to American political icon, “Rudy” Giuliani. Quite serendipitously (and as though Netflix read my phone messages or possibly my mind), minutes later, I came across a new Netflix documentary entitled “Fear City: New York vs. The Mafia” where Giuliani is documented to have played a significant role in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This true crime documentary examines the rise and fall of organized crime in New York in the 1970s to early 1980s. It narrates the dark tale of how the Big Apple once transformed into the playground of underbelly operations of The Mafia – composed of the five major Italian-American crime families and their sophisticated network of ruthless henchmen. Law enforcers could not put a stop to their rings of crime, or even implicate them, and others that dared come close, found themselves or their loved ones in a rather, messy situation. These crime families of Italian descent were basically your true-to-life gangsters from which The Godfather Trilogy was based on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman, Robin and Commissioner Gordon in Gotham City
Bringing down the Mob back then was a feat everyone thought impossible. Nevertheless, joint forces between the FBI and Giuliani (then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York; 1983 -1989), and his handpicked team of prosecutors were able to do so – and with much required grit and tenacity. Giuliani especially, was credited to be the single piece of rice that tipped the scale in this momentous moment in the history of criminal justice. After which, Giuliani’s political career began to skyrocket. Despite losing his first election in 1989, he eventually gets elected Mayor of New York in 1993, and then reelected in 1997 to hold the position until 2001.
Tumblr media
During his term as Mayor of New York, Giuliani’s most popular platform was his “toughness on crime.” Such that, the gentrification, revitalization and “clean-up” of New York and significant decrease in crime rates during those heyday years are largely attributed to him. His appointment of NYPD Chief of Police, Bill Bratton also proved effective, and is often the popular topic of business case studies today. Bratton did not resort to brute force alone. In fact, he was said to be data-driven, resourceful and efficient. His non-traditional, out-of-the-box thinking, many would agree, had indeed brought about real, lasting positive change in New York.
Tumblr media
Giuliani was also known for making popular what is known as the “perp walk”, wherein he would orchestrate public arrests, worthy of media frenzies and major headlines, of high-profile suspects, usually of white-collar crimes. The nature of these arrests garnered some criticism of course, but it was not enough then to tarnish his image and push him far away from the good graces of the American people, especially New Yorkers. He is also highly commended for his post-9/11 (2001) disaster responses and was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for these tremendous efforts. He was even named TIME magazine's Person of the Year in 2001.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Fall from Grace
However, fast forward years later to now 2020, many of Giuliani’s constituents and longtime supporters who once held “America’s Mayor” of the highest esteem, often say that the Rudy Giuliani of the past is long gone. Embroiled in various controversies and investigations, not to mention issues that involve being President Trump’s current legal adviser, he has said to have become the very type of white-collar “perps” he used to round up and arrest. It is quite unfortunate, isn’t it, these kind of tragic hero to zero stories. Time is not on his side now, but who knows if there is still a chance for a comeback.
Rudy Giuliani’s story sounds very familiar.
Tumblr media
Rody
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Davao, Philippines to be exact, during the same time that Rudy Giuliani was rising to fame, there lived and breathed another Mayor with a very similar tough guy image – Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte. An attorney as well, he also began his career in the prosecutor’s office.
Tumblr media
Photo taken from The New York Times: Rodrigo Duterte posing with an Uzi submachine gun in 1994, when he was mayor of Davao City in the Philippines.
Tumblr media
 Duterte Harry
Duterte “made his bones” by allegedly taking crime into his own hands. Before assuming the Presidency, he was known as the gun-toting, smart-talkin’, fearless and tough Mayor who cleaned up Davao which back then, was supposedly a war-torn region due to the emergence of the New People’s Army (NPA) post Marcos-regime. People nodded in approval because he produced “quick” results.
If Rudy Giuliani had his Chief of Police, Bill Bratton and the NYPD, Rody Duterte had a comparable squad as well. With the help of his elite unit of police enforcers, coined as the “Davao Death Squad” (DDS), they were able to arrest crime suspects, such as alleged (but non-convicted) drug dealers and petty thieves and parade them throughout the streets, for behold, all to know and see. This sounds like the Filipino version of a perp walk. In extreme cases, sometimes suspects were allegedly found dead in alleys or eskinitas, their bloody bodies mutilated.
Yet, it could be said that quite a number of Davaoenos, as well as Filipinos beyond the Mindanao region, supported this kind of vigilante method because they felt safer, and they felt that finally, the wheels of justice were turning. To simplify this narrative by using a fictional analogy again, it is the same train of thought on why we have a great admiration for Batman and the like.
Many believed this was what the Philippines truly needed - a “strongman” to discipline the country, which to be fair, is an idea that can understandably seem like the right and sound solution, given the Philippines’s web of problems. Not many are willing to further dissect, assess and accept what is truly needed to lead the Philippines. Duterte’s notoriety thus gained much popularity, and his savior persona spread like wildfire throughout the country, propelling him to the Presidential seat in 2016.
One-Trick Pony in a Small Pond
Four years later, come 2020, and here we are, amidst a terrible pandemic with no signs of turning the tide in favor of a victory. I’ve heard one too many times, friends and colleagues say how they despise being a Filipino, and are looking for opportunities to leave and start a new life elsewhere immediately. I can’t say I blame them.
Tumblr media
The once highly respected and beloved Davao Mayor has become the Philippines’s Public enemy number one, for reasons we all know today such as, but not limited to:
Militaristic and shotgun approaches instead of “comprehensive, scientific and systematic policies” to mitigate the pandemic  (Read: Lives vs Livelihood Tradeoff?, August 5, 2020)
Lack of economic and fiscal planning and No transparency on stimulus packages and foreign loans (Read: A Perfect Storm, May 22, 2020)
Preferential treatment towards those in positions of power and unequal application of the law (Read: On lockdown and pushed over the edge, April 30, 2020)
Playing Russian Roulette on community quarantine implementations
Deflecting faults and shortcomings through the “Pasaway citizen” narrative
Demeaning local government leaders/efforts when they come up with their own local initiatives
Putting China’s interests ahead of the Philippines (Read: From Ugly Duckling to Black Swan, April 3, 2020)
And some of the more specific controversies that we can’t help but feel overwhelming emotions for:
Trial of Maria Ressa and his attack on free press and journalism
Shutdown of ABS-CBN which includes 11,000 employees to lose their jobs during a time like this
Inaction of recent PhilHealth scandal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps si Mayor should have stayed as Mayor, or perhaps evolved to a different role beyond public service, instead of eyeing gargantuan tasks too big for him to handle. He may have been “effective” as Davao’s Mayor, but running a country is a whole different ballgame.
It was in fact, the late Miriam Santiago, during the final 2016 Presidential debate held in Dagupan, Pangasinan (April 24, 2016) who pointed out, “We are not choosing a manager, administrator, etc. We are choosing the next President of the Philippines for the next 6 years.“ She even went on to enumerate three minimum criteria that a President must have in his or her arsenal in order to effectively lead, such as “1) Academic Excellence; 2) Professional Excellence, and 3) Moral Integrity” – all of which majority Filipinos flippantly shrugged off as useless qualities. I agreed with her which is why I voted for Mar Roxas. Maybe those who voted for Duterte regret this decision now, and hopefully see the wisdom behind Santiago’s statements.
As I’ve said many times over, Duterte peddled a dream that the Philippines can only be great again with an “iron-fisted” leader, and sadly but quite expectedly, our misinformed voters ate it all up - hook, line and sinker. (Read: ORAS NA, April 26, 2016).
I’d like to believe that Duterte perhaps started out as an idealist, with the genuine desire to carve out change where he thought he could. However, somewhere along the way, he lost himself and what he stood for when he let his ego get in the way. I think he himself now knows, but cannot admit to the public, that a one-trick pony has no business leading a highly complex, difficult and problematic country such as the Philippines.
Tumblr media
More Analogies in 2020: The Year of the Rat led by the Pied Piper
Other than Duterte, three other political personalities that will forever be remembered as the shameful faces of the COVID-19 situation in the Philippines are Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Speaker of the House Allan Peter Cayetano and the ever-infamous, Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque. I surmise history will not be so kind to them, and their roles and decisions in this crisis will continue to be told on, even when “this is all over.”
Tumblr media
Infestation of Rats
These three loyal lackeys of Duterte can be likened to the rats in the children’s fairy tale of the Pied Piper who is no less than Duterte. Roque, Cayetano and Duque seem like educated and smart people, leaving no other explanation for their horrible decisions, except that they have long sold their souls to Duterte, and are in too deep to back out now. They’ve let themselves fall under some kind of spell. A consolation in the story of the Pied Piper, is that the entranced rats follow the Pied Piper’s hypnotizing music to their eventual demise and drown at sea. The Pied Piper however, just leaves them there and walks on. Seems like a foreboding scenario, figuratively speaking.
It would be best if the story ended there. However, we find that the Pied Piper, like our very own version, is a vengeful one, and will stop at nothing until he has accomplished a personal vendetta towards whomever crosses him. In our Pied Pier’s skewed view, he feels that his opponents have gravely wronged him, or have been incredibly ungrateful for all the “work” he has achieved. His next plan of action is to hit them where it hurts the most – by getting to the children or those “most vulnerable and without a voice”. Seizing the power of his position, he is able to demonize multitudes through his filthy words, terrorizing laws and drug wars. (Read: Dead Kids, February 20, 2020).
In so many dark metaphors, in the dead of the night, while everyone cluelessly sleeps, the Pied Piper plays his hypnotizing song that “vulnerable communities” are uncontrollably drawn to, forced to follow, or fooled into blindly following, until they all disappear without a trace, possibly never to be found again.
Light at the end of a Long Tunnel
However, I think our Pied Piper may have made a costly miscalculation. He may have robbed the country blind and killed countless lives (directly and indirectly), while we ignorantly slept, but he has ignited a fire. He has seemed to awoken a sleeping giant – a sleeping giant, unified in anger against this administration and what it stands for. Is Change Coming?

Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence (born April 16, 1965) is a German-born American stand-up comedian, actor, producer, writer, and voice actor. Lawrence came to fame during the 1990s, establishing a Hollywood career as a leading actor, most notably in the television sitcom Martin and the films House Party, Boomerang, Bad Boys, Wild Hogs, Nothing to Lose, Blue Streak, Life, Big Momma's House, and A Thin Line Between Love & Hate.
Early life
The fourth of six children, Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965 in Frankfurt, West Germany, to African American parents who were serving in the U.S. military in West Germany at the time of Martin's birth. Lawrence was named after civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and U.S. President John F. Kennedy. His parents divorced when he was eight years old and Lawrence rarely saw his estranged father, who worked as a police officer. His mother, Chlora (née Bailey), began working several jobs to support her family.
During his teen years, Lawrence excelled at boxing. Lawrence lived in Queens, New York, and Landover, Maryland, and he attended: Thomas G. Pullen School of Creative and Performing Arts (Landover, Maryland); Fairmont Heights High School (Fairmont Heights, Maryland); Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Greenbelt, Maryland); and Friendly High School in Fort Washington, Maryland, becoming a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves boxing contender. He seriously considered a professional career until he suffered a broken eye that prompted him to reconsider.
Career
Lawrence ended up moving to New York City and found his way to the legendary The Improv. Shortly after appearing at The Improv, Lawrence won a performance spot on Star Search. He did well on the show and made it to the final round, but did not win. However, executives at Columbia Pictures Television saw Martin's performance and offered him the role of Maurice in What's Happening Now!!; this was his first acting job. Upon cancellation of that show, Lawrence found bit parts in various films and television series. His breakthrough role was as Cee in Do the Right Thing. Other roles followed in films such as the House Party series, Talkin' Dirty After Dark, and the Eddie Murphy vehicle Boomerang. During this period, entertainment mogul Russell Simmons selected him to host the groundbreaking series Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Def Comedy Jam gave many comedians (including Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer) mainstream exposure.
During his stint with Def Comedy Jam, Lawrence appeared in his own hit series, Martin, which aired on Fox TV. The show ran from 1992 to 1997 and was an enormous success. Martin was the flagship of Fox's Thursday-night line-up, which drew millions of viewers away from NBC's "Must See TV" line-up. He hosted Saturday Night Live on February 19, 1994, where he made crude remarks about women's genitalia and personal hygiene; the monologue was completely edited out of NBC reruns and syndicated versions, and Lawrence was banned from the show for life. Martin's ratings continued to skyrocket so much that Fox became more of a contender against NBC and came closer to being considered among the top television networks.
After Martin ended its run in 1997, Lawrence found work in comedy films. He often starred as the second lead opposite actors including Eddie Murphy, Danny DeVito, and Tim Robbins. Many of his films were blockbusters at the box office, including Nothing to Lose, Life, Blue Streak, and Big Momma's House. He also starred in critical- and box-office failures, including Black Knight and National Security. Regardless, his salary steadily increased to over $10 million per film role. He continues to work in film, with such films as Big Momma's House 2, which opened at No. 1 at North American box office and grossed almost $28 million its first weekend, and Wild Hogs (2007), in which he played a bored suburbanite seeking adventure on the open road in a biker comedy alongside John Travolta, Tim Allen and William H. Macy.
In 2006, Lawrence appeared on Inside the Actors Studio, during which Lawrence briefly brought back to life some of the characters he'd portrayed on Martin.
In 2008, Lawrence starred in Disney's College Road Trip co-starring with Raven-Symoné. It was his first G-rated film, but not his first appearance in a children's film: he supplied a voice for Open Season (2006) opposite Ashton Kutcher.
At the 2009 BET Awards he appeared in a spoof movie trailer with Jamie Foxx for a fictional movie, The Skank Robbers, that featured their respective television characters Sheneneh Jenkins and Ugly Wanda. In 2010, Fox announced that it was producing a film based on the sketch, featuring Foxx, Lawrence, and actress Halle Berry.
In 2011, Lawrence reprised his role as FBI agent Malcolm Turner in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, the third film in the Big Momma's House series.
In January 2013, it was announced that Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer are considering pairing up to star in a comedy for Lionsgate TV. The series will likely follow the same production model as Charlie Sheen's Anger Management, which is also produced by Lionsgate TV. That show was recently given a hardy back-90 pickup following its initial 10-episode order. In March 2013, it was announced that television producers/writers Robert L. Boyett and Robert Horn are on board, writing and executive producing. They have worked on the popular hit sitcoms Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, Full House, and Designing Women. Partners, pairs the two actors as Chicago lawyers from "vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly meet in court on the worst day of their lives," according to a network description. David A. Arnold has been tapped to write. Arnold has written for television shows including: Raising Whitley, Meet the Browns, The Rickey Smiley Show and more. Edi Patterson has been cast as a regular and will play Verushka, a busty, sexy Russian woman who co-owns the massage shop next door. Danièle Watts will play the daughter of Lawrence's character. The show premiered August 4, 2014 and lasted one season.
In August 2014, Martin Lawrence confirmed, on Conan O'Brien, that Bad Boys 3 is almost done being written.
Personal life
Relationships and family
Lawrence was engaged to actress Lark Voorhies in 1993. He married Miss Virginia USA, Patricia Southall in 1995. Lawrence and Southall have one child together, daughter Jasmine Page (born January 15, 1996). They divorced in 1997. In 1997, Lawrence began a relationship with Shamicka Gibbs. They married on July 10, 2010, at Lawrence's Beverly Hills home. Actors Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington were among the 120 wedding guests; R&B singer Shanice serenaded the couple with the Minnie Riperton classic "Lovin' You." Lawrence and Gibbs have two daughters: Iyanna Faith (born November 9, 2000) and Amara Trinity (born August 20, 2002). Lawrence filed for divorce from Gibbs on April 25, 2012, citing irreconcilable differences and asking for joint legal and physical custody of the children.
Lawrence owns a farm near Purcellville, Virginia. For many years, he owned a large mansion in the exclusive Beverly Park community, but sold it in June 2012 following his divorce. His oldest daughter Jasmin is currently a freshman at Duke University.
Legal issues and health problems
In July 1995, while on the set filming A Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Lawrence lashed out in a violent rage and was then hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
On May 8, 1996, he became increasingly erratic and was arrested after he brandished a pistol in the middle of an intersection on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles, screaming, "They're trying to kill me!" He was again hospitalized, with his public-relations agent citing exhaustion and dehydration as the reasons for this episode.
In March 1997, Lawrence was arrested after punching a man in a Hollywood nightclub.
During August 1999, Lawrence slipped into a three-day coma after collapsing from heat exhaustion while jogging in 100-degree heat in preparation for Big Momma's House while wearing heavy clothing and a "plastic suit." He recovered in the hospital after nearly dying due to a body temperature of 107 °F (41.7 °C), his breathing assisted by a ventilator.
