47: Scorpions // Best of Scorpions
Best of Scorpions Scorpions 1979, RCA
A definite sign I’m In My Cups is if I start prattling on about how special Blue Öyster Cult are. Most people wisely leave or change (with herculean efforts) the subject, but those who hang around through the first hour or so on BÖC are eventually rewarded with at least a brief interlude on the general ass-kicking Scorpions performed circa 1976–78. Like their English contemporaries Judas Priest, Hannover’s Scorpions were an uncommonly nimble and technically-proficient hard rock five-piece who honed the sledge-assed rhythm and blues of Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Mountain into a steely new sound that would subsequently put generations of denim-and-leatherheads on whiplash-related disability.
youtube
This RCA-era Best of captures Scorpions squarely in their late ‘70s prime, between their early (and mostly boring) psych rock period and the increasingly poppy Mercury Records years that would make them international arena rock gentry. They have an archetypal metal lineup: a seldom celebrated yet unfaltering rhythm section (Francis Buchholz on bass and first Rudy Lenners then Herman Rarebell on drums); a Hendrix-pilled dreamer on divebombing lead guitar (Uli Jon Roth); a modest, riff-generating machine on rhythm (Rudolf Schenker); and a frizzy twerp armed with a piercing wail out front (Klaus Meine).
On their own, the Schenker/Meine songwriting partnership was more than capable of pushing Scorpions to a spot near the top of the ‘70s hard rock heap. Germanglish nonsense lyrics aside, “Steamrock Fever” and “Backstage Queen” show the raw gift for anthemic melody that would eventually make them rich, while “Robot Man” and especially “He’s a Woman—She’s a Man” are some of the most evolved speed metal of their day.
youtube
But it's Uli Jon Roth’s smoking, crackling lead guitar that gives this era of Scorpions its particular wildness. Best of’s compilers wisely close with a trio of Roth compositions that showcase his Jimi-does-“Immigrant Song” style, each a crusading ladders-up-the-castle-wall, sack-the-city burner. (Though his choice to sing lead on “Dark Lady” remains regrettable.) “The Sails of Charon” in particular is Scorpions’ greatest contribution to the heavy metal canon, an acid-scarred temple of spiraling lead licks, snaky riffs, and hair-raising shrieks. Though Roth now looks like someone stuffed David Crosby in a cannon and fired him through the display window of a crystal store, he’s one of the greats (and, as of 2023, can still absolutely play his ass off).
Go off, you king in satins.
Best of doesn’t include every gem from the four LP run it covers, but for someone who reaches for Scorpions once a year or so, it’s their best single sampler on wax.

Scorpions
"Life's Like A River"
As years are passing by
Silence becomes your friend
You see the world in a different way
Don't be afraid of getting old
Life's still full of joy
And the beauty of the past
Is rejoicing your mind.
When days are getting short
And winter comes along
Your Life slows down and down
Life's like a river getting wide
The words have lost their force
You remember your morning
Flow into the endless sea.
Life's like a river in the morning
Life's like a sea without end
Life's like a river in the morning
Life's like a sea without end
