Le dytique semble avoir été créée pour donner l'occasion à Rubén Pellejero de s'exprimer avec des couleurs vives et de créer des contrastes d'une planche à l'autre.

"El Aeroplano Loco" ('The Crazy Aeroplane') by Juanjo el Rápido, from the first issue of Idiota y Diminuto ('Tiny and Idiotic'), 1997. Idiota was a comics-focused magazine published by the Asociación Cultural La Más Bella, a collective founded by Pepe Murciego, Diego Ortiz and Juanjo el Rápido. Their first venture was to publish the experimental comics zine La Más Bella ('The Most Beautiful'), beginning in 1993. It was one of the only comics magazines to come out of Madrid during the nineties, which proved a barren decade for Spanish comics. The bubble burst following on from a golden age (roughly 1975-1988) of Spanish comics proved catastrophic. The '90s comics industry in Spain was so bad that the government encouraged talented cartoonists like Rubén Pellejero (the artist for Dieter Lumpen) to leave the country for France, where comics were thriving. David Rubín dubbed it "la época de la mierda" or 'the era of shit.'

The magazine was a home not only for cartoonists emerging during the '90s, but also for those creators who had already emerged, albeit too late in the '80s to cement themselves in any particular scene. Isidro Ferrer and Juan Berrio are examples of this: they contributed to the Zaragozan Madriz copycat TVO and to one or two late issues of Madriz itself. Juanjo el Rápido was one of the former (his first published comic was in 1993, in the first issue of La Más Bella) but the influence of Madrilenian cartoonists like Javier de Juan, Ana Miralles (both regulars of Madriz), El Hortelano and Ceesepe is strong. The seemingly random appearance of Mickey Mouse in the last panel is not so unusual: the cartoonists of La Más Bella were just as, maybe even more, postmodern than their Madriz predecessors―Goku makes a cameo in La Más Bella's magazine's first issue―but it was more David Foster Wallace and less Thomas Pynchon, more cynicism and less sincerity for a time in Spanish comics that did not inspire optimism.

Corto Maltese and Hugo Pratt (III Part) :

Peu avant sa mort, Pratt n’avait pas exclu la possibilité que certains auteurs puissent continuer les aventures de Corto Maltese. Dans une interview de 1987, lorsqu’on lui demanda d’indiquer d’éventuels « héritiers » aptes à poursuivre les aventures de Corto, il nomma ses collègues Milo Manara et Lele Vianello.

3- En 2015, les éditions Casterman relancent Corto Maltese en faisant appel à un duo espagnol : Juan Díaz Canales, scénariste de Blacksad, et Rubén Pellejero, qui avait dessiné Le tour de valse, terrible histoire d’amour dans un camp de prisonniers en Sibérie. Ils ont réussi à trouver un récit rythmé et un style s’approchant de ceux d’Hugo Pratt.

Dans Sous le soleil de minuit (2015), se déroulant en 1915, Corto Maltese arrive au Panama aux côtés de Raspoutine pour retrouver son ami écrivain Jack London. Dans l’album Équatoria (2017), Corto part en 1911 à la recherche d’une relique des croisades, « le miroir du prêtre Jean », ce qui l’amène en Egypte et au Soudan. Le Jour de Tarowean (2019) dévoile les événements qui précèdent l’apparition de Corto Maltese, attaché sur un radeau au large d’une île de l’océan Pacifique dans La Ballade de la mer salée, la première aventure publiée par Hugo Pratt.

Nocturnes berlinois, sorti en septembre 2022, est le 17 ème album de la série. Il nous emmène en un lieu qui n’avait pas encore été exploré par Corto : Berlin. On découvre, en 1924, la république de Weimar minée par les organisations d’extrême-droite (ici, l’organisation Consul) et les revendications communistes. Corto Maltese recherche à Berlin et Prague les assassins de son ami juif Steiner. Son enquête l’amène à s’introduire dans une société secrète ésotérique : Stella Matutina. Cet album présente l’originalité de confronter Corto Maltese aux prémices du national-socialisme, influencé par le fascisme italien. On se souvient de l’histoire personnelle d’Hugo Pratt : son père, fasciste, entraîna son fils encore adolescent dans l’aventure coloniale italienne en Ethiopie. L’organisation Consul, qui a réellement existé, était composée de personnalités issues de la bourgeoisie, de la noblesse et de l’armée, parmi lesquelles l’écrivain Ernst von Salomon. Pratiquant des assassinats politiques, elle ne devint jamais un mouvement de masse, à la différence du parti nazi. Autre surprise, Corto joue le diable dans un film expressionniste allemand, évoquant Faust de Murnau.

Le dessin de Pellejero quitte la sobriété des premiers albums pour devenir davantage réaliste. Ce Corto est le meilleur réalisé par le duo d’auteurs espagnols.

4- Parallèlement, depuis peu, toujours chez Casterman, le scénariste Martin Quenehen et le dessinateur Bastien Vivès réalisent une histoire différente de Corto, puisque contemporaine et modernisée. Elle n’entre pas dans la numérotation officielle des albums de Corto Maltese.
