THE MALTESE FALCON (Dir: Roy Del Ruth, 1931) Movie number 5; the original version of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, which I guess makes it the grandaddy of film noir. Lacking both the charismatic presence of Humphrey Bogart and the sheer style of the 1941 version, it is still entertaining enough and being made pre Hays Code means it’s a little bit saucier than the remake! 100+ movie reviews now available on my blog jinglebonesmovietime.blogspot.com

I just saw a film that I would recommend. It's not a great film. Not feasible, but it isn't so predictable, either. It's a surprise, and a lot of fun. The Little Giant (Del Ruth,1933). Edward G Robinson, was just coming off the unexpected success of Little Caesar. He, his work made that film. He set the standard for the modern (talkie) gangster film. He deserves all the credit. Now two, or three years later, he's stuck. Warner Brothers has dollar signs in their eyes. The audience expects more of the same. The Little Giant, costars Mary Astor. It's a (pre-code) Gangster Comedy. I love the language of it. It feels so genuine. Along with Robinson, and Astor it's the language. There is one un-self conscious, slur in it. Threw me off, for a moment. I never liked Mary Astor, I wasn't aware as to why. Brigid O'Shaughnessy, Miss.Wonderley, she was so good in the Maltese Falcon. Deceitful, slimey. I blamed her, for her acting. She hit it out of the park, and I didn't get it. That's all. It's fun, silly, and a great example of a Warner Brothers, Robinson, pre-code film, of the '30's.
