Gerald Ford vs. Teddy Roosevelt, no holds barred MMA fight. Who wins?

Despite his portrayal as a clumsy oaf, Gerald Ford was almost certainly the best athlete to ever serve in the White House. He was a legendary college football player who won two national championships at the University of Michigan, and was MVP of the team in his senior year. Ford turned down contract offers from the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, but turned down a career in the NFL in order to attend law school. Ford was a avid skier until his 80s and continued swimming regularly for exercise into his 90s, and he would have had a notable size advantage over Theodore Roosevelt.

However, if someone genuinely knows what they are doing during a mixed martial arts fight, they are going to be very difficult to defeat -- even against an opponent who might be a superior athlete in every other sense. That has been a lesson learned throughout the growth of MMA as a mainstream sport dating back to Royce Gracie easily handling much bigger opponents in the early UFC with his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Or Rickson Gracie calmly controlling and systematically dominating literally everyone he fought in Japan, no matter who Pride FC threw at him.

Theodore Roosevelt would be giving up quite a bit of size and athletic ability against Gerald Ford, but TR was an early student of martial arts. As President -- in the White House itself -- Roosevelt kept active with wrestling (always the best foundation for a mixed martial artist) and boxing. And he was among the first Americans to actually train in jiu jitsu and judo, receiving lessons directly from the legendary Yamashita Yoshiaki. Because of that experience, I think Theodore Roosevelt probably would have given any of his fellow Presidents a rough day at the office if they had an MMA fight, no matter how big or strong or athletic his opponent might be.

Royce Gracie vs Kazushi Sakuraba 1 - Pride Grand Prix 2000 Finals

More throwbacks. This time, the longest fight in MMA history. The fight that would solidify Kazushi Sakuraba as the “Gracie Killer”.

Some context: Kazushi Sakuraba was a pro-wrestler for shoot-style promotion UWFi in the mid-90s. A standout amateur freestyle wrestler who placed top 4 in the All-Japan tournament in college, he took rather well to the shoot style of fighting that was taught in the UWFi’s gym, especially with the catch wrestling styles of Yoji Anjo and Billy Robinson.

With the promotion struggling, many UWFi (later Kingdom PW) wrestlers tried to grab attention by competing in MMA-style fights. This led to Sakuraba eventually competing in the UFC Japan heavyweight tournament (which he’d win). It didn’t save the promotion however and Sakuraba was kind of left in this new career come 1998. He joins Pride FC, a promotion made to promote a fight between his teacher Nobuhiko Takada and Rickson Gracie. Unlike his pro wrestling compatriots, Sakuaraba just keeps winning. Which is wild cause he’s often giving up 20-30lbs each fight. He rattles off 5 wins inside of Pride, submitting a number of BJJ black belts (unheard of at the time).

Eventually, Sakuraba is matched with Royler Gracie. The Gracie family is MMA royalty at this point. Royce has won 3 UFC tournaments. Rickson won two Vale Tudo Japan tournaments and the first ever Pride FC main event. The Gracies had not lost in decades of professional fighting. But then, Sakuraba manages to submit Royler via kimura. Drawing back to how Masahiko Kimura submitted Helio Gracie (Royler, Rickson, and Royce’s father).

The finish was controversial (Royler did not tap), so the Gracies decided to send Royce to defend their family honor in 2000 as part of the Pride FC Openweight Grand Prix. The Gracies ask for a bunch of rule changes - unlimited rounds, no ref stoppages, etc - for the Sakuraba match up. And that’s how we end up with a fight that is 90 minutes long.

Loving Whiskey has a little bit of everything! The story follows Willow/Whiskey, a girl unlucky in love, who meets Mr. Colton Royce and its love at first sight.

Colt Royce is one hell of a charmer and knows exactly who and what he wants. And gets it.

Those who love fast-paced relationships will fall in love with Whiskey and Colt. There’s lots of humor, a bit of drama, a few tendrils of steam, and a dash of angst. This was such a fun read and I adored it very much.

Now normally, I’m not a fan of so many characters being introduced, but Whiskey’s girls and the Panty Droppers, and Noni and her cronies was excellent. I loved the drama of so many relationships (and am definitely hoping to see these couples in future books) and the craziness of the older generation.

As I mentioned before, this really was a fun read.

Art Jimmerson has sadly passed away. A former pro boxer and national gold gloves champion, One Glove is remembered for his appearance at UFC 1 where he lost to Royce Gracie in the opening round of the tournament.

I want to hear about your strategy RPG with the unrotting forest zombies!

It wasn’t strategy, it was RPG Maker. It was two or three hours long, with four (tiny) dungeons, three endings, two secret characters, and one adorable shapeshifting slime monster. Sometimes I think of trying to get it to work again, but I’m not sure where the issue is. (Everything high-level in RPG Maker still looks perfect, so there must be an issue somewhere lower down.)

In retrospect, not everything I tried worked. I wanted this “knife fight” setup where neither you nor your enemies have much HP, but RPG Maker works better for more padded combat where you have time to U-turn when your strategy fails. But I still like the contrast between the almost cartoon-like world and the suffering the war brought, as if the war was something that shouldn’t have existed and fundamentally tainted the world.

Here’s my old character list. (At the time I wrote this, I referred to the elves as Aetheril from the island of Aether, as opposed to Humans from the continent of Huma.)

Graciela "Gracie" Rosith: Heroine. A field medic in the Human army, thought dead in the war with Aether. Actually a slime monster pretending to be Gracie, but don't tell anyone! Can mimic other characters' highest and lowest stats.

Maralia "Marie" Rosith: Speed specialist. A newly recruited scout in the Human army. Half-Aetheril, and unhappy that people keep bringing it up like some sign of disloyalty. Can't control her inherited magic. Sister of the original Gracie.

Royce Adams: Attack specialist. A Human soldier, conscripted at the tail end of the war with Aether. Survived the near-annihilation of the western front, and he's bitter as hell about the whole debacle. Picked up some unusual magic from overexposure to withering energy. Really just needs therapy.

Tomasio "Tom" Fleureis: Magic specialist. Aetheril defector and brilliant magical researcher. Worked on the magic weapon that ended up blowing up the western front. Breathtakingly self-absorbed. Grandfather of Gracie and Marie.

Billiam "Billy" Sanford: Resistance specialist. Wealthy young nobleman, a prodigy at magical barriers. Basically a huge nerd. Tom's research assistant. Has a thing for Marie.

Defense specialist: Beneath notice.

Luck specialist: Watching and waiting

I like this because Mad Dog is one of the most feared underlings of Tama's, they even talk about how dangerous he is compared to the other one (Andi, who is more cunning and willing to bribe/blackmail).

AND HE'S JUST A LIL' GUY. Jaka can heave him up and even throw him into a dresser, but he still loses- Which yes, it's a movie, but even in UFC's wild west style MMA competition circles, Royce Gracie (like of GRACIE JIUJITSU- the guy is literally MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR), managed to win and he's a little dude too.

Anyway, yeah- Jules needs to fight like this guy, @monstersmade!
