Some William ' Throne Idle' articles from 2016

The Sun gives both barrels to Prince William

Newspaper accuses the huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ Duke of Cambridge of idleness and seeking to exercise control over the media
Thu 18 Feb 2016 11.41 GMT
It has been coming for a while. The Sun, despite its support for the monarchy, has given both barrels to Prince William.
In a spread headlined “Meddling Wills is throne idle”, the paper accused him of a reluctance to carry out public engagements while enjoying the life of a huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ “gentleman country farmer”.
There is, said the article, “little doubt about William’s desperation to shun the role he was born to do”. He is “the very essence of a reluctant royal.”
The piece was prompted by one of the prince’s rare public appearances - his first in 2016 - in which he addressed foreign office staff and, in so doing, provoked something of a row.
His remarks prompted speculation that he was endorsing the UK’s continued membership of the European Union (a view comprehensively rubbished by the Guardian’s Michael White).
But the Sun saw it as a breach of royal protocol, implying that it was an anti-Brexit speech. Whether it was or wasn’t, the paper’s senior executives believed the prince should have been more careful in what he said.
More than that, the Sun used the opportunity to air other grievances about the prince. It reported: “Many people, including his own friends, are starting to question whether William really wants to be royal at all.”
It contrasted the number of public engagements he carried out in 2015 with other members of the royal family. With a total of 122, William did fewer than 11 other royals, including his 94-year-old grandfather. The Sun’s story stated:
“He deliberately based himself, wife Kate and their children — George, two, and nine-month-old Charlotte — out of the public eye at the ten-bedroom Anmer Hall in deepest Norfolk.
And he shows little interest in taking on more royal patronages, preferring instead to work as a pilot for the local air ambulance.”
It criticised his failure, as Bafta president, to turn up the awards ceremony “for the second successive year”. And it also pointed out that he rarely spends any time in London “despite YOU having to fork out £4m for the refurbishment of the family’s 22-room apartment at Kensington Palace.”
Tabloid editors are not the only ones to question the prince’s reluctance to appear in public. Joan Smith, writing in the Independent in 2013, noted how few engagements he carried out.

PRINCE William has been slammed for attending less than half the number of official events this year compared with his dad at the same stage of life.
Stats this week showed Wills made 188 appearances in 2016 and wife Kate 140 but in 1985 dad Charles made 404 official appearances and mum Princess Diana 299.

troubling royal statistics wouldn’t have been enough to elevate this beyond the usual tabloid level. That came when the Sun devastated the excuse long given by royal officials—that William works as an air ambulance pilot, thus couldn’t do that many duties. An unnamed source offered all the ammunition the Sun needed: “William’s supporters point out his engagements are down as he was busy with a new job last summer with East Anglian Air Ambulance. And he’s ‘packing in the shifts’ so everything else has to fit in. But a source grumbled to the Sun: ‘He’s hardly ever on shift. He was very enthusiastic to begin with but it tailed off. It’s supposed to be four on, four off but with the Duke it’s more off than on. He had at least four weeks off over Christmas, which has to be staffed the same as normal weeks. It’s fine that he gets a bit of special treatment but it’s beginning to really annoy some people. The rumour is that he’s just a bit bored of it.’ ”
Sensing danger, royal damage control parties (by all accounts under the direction of William and Kate) swung into action—and missed.
On Monday, air ambulance bosses were trotted out to praise William as doing “a very important job,” while also insisting, “We all feel he’s very much part of the team.” A Kensington Palace spokeswoman, who answers to William and Kate, thanked East Anglian Air Ambulance for giving William “the opportunity to carry out his skilled work.” Palace sources insisted he aimed to be “on shift” as a pilot for around 80 hours a month (around 22.5 hours a week), thus conforming with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules.
But those “unnamed palace sources” couldn’t stop talking, and appeared to have blundered into a deep hole. One told Gordon Rayner, chief reporter at the Telegraph, that William was restricted in the number of royal duties he could undertake because “there are mandatory rest days enforced by the CAA, when you’re not meant to go off and do other work because it’s not rest.”
The CAA shot back, saying William’s staff was “confused.” A CAA spokesman said Rayner: “It’s true that you can only work a certain number of hours in any given period, but to suggest that pilots can’t do anything else on some rest days is totally unenforceable. When they are having rest days their time is their own, and they can do what they want, including carrying out royal duties.”

• Douglas Bader (English RAF Ace)
Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 22 aerial victories.
Bader was born on February 21st 1910 in St John's Wood, London, the second son of Frederick Roberts Bader, a civil engineer, and his wife Jessie Scott MacKenzie. His first two years were spent with McCann relatives in the Isle of Man while his father, accompanied by Bader's mother and older brother Frederick, returned to his work in India after the birth of his son. At the age of two, Bader joined his parents in India for a year. When his father resigned from his job in 1913 the family moved back to London. Bader's father saw action in the First World War in the Royal Engineers, and was wounded in action in 1917. He remained in France after the war, where, having attained the rank of major, he died in 1922 of complications from those wounds in a hospital in Saint-Omer. Bader's mother was remarried shortly thereafter to the Reverend Ernest William Hobbs. Bader was subsequently brought up in the rectory of the village of Sprotbrough, near Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire. His mother showed little interest in Bader and sent him to his grandparents on occasion. Without guidance, Bader became unruly. Bader was then sent as a boarder to Temple Grove School, one of the "Famous Five" of English prep schools, however one which gave its boys a Spartan upbringing.
Bader's aggressive energy found a new lease of life at St Edward's School, where he received his secondary education. During his time there, he thrived at sports. Bader played rugby and often enjoyed physical battles with bigger and older opponents. In mid-1923, Bader, at the age of 13, was introduced to an Avro 504 during a school holiday trip to visit his aunt, Hazel, who was marrying RAF Flight Lieutenant Cyril Burge, adjutant at RAF Cranwell. Although he enjoyed the visit and took an interest in aviation, he showed no signs of becoming a keen pilot. Bader's formative years, he took less of an interest in his studies. However, Bader received guidance from his school's headmaster Warden Henry E. Kendall and, with Kendall's encouragement, he excelled at his studies and was later accepted as a cadet at RAF Cranwell. In 1928, Bader joined the RAF as an officer cadet at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in rural Lincolnshire. On 13 September 1928, Bader took his first flight with his instructor Flying Officer W. J. "Pissy" Pearson in an Avro 504. After just 11 hours and 15 minutes of flight time, he flew his first solo, on February 19th, 1929. Bader competed for the "Sword of Honour" award at the end of his two-year course, but lost to Patrick Coote, his nearest rival.
On July 26th, 1930, Bader was commissioned as a pilot officer into No. 23 Squadron RAF based at Kenley, Surrey. Flying Gloster Gamecocks and soon after Bristol Bulldogs, Bader became a daredevil while training there, often flying illegal and dangerous stunts. While very fast for its time, the Bulldog had directional stability problems at low speeds, which made such stunts exceptionally dangerous. After one training flight at the gunnery range, Bader achieved only a 38 percent hit rate on a target. Receiving jibes from a rival squadron (No. 25 Squadron RAF), Bader took off to perform aerobatics and show off his skill. It was against regulations, and seven out of 23 accidents caused by ignoring regulations had proven fatal. Nevertheless, on December 14th, 1931, while visiting Reading Aero Club, Bader attempted some low-flying aerobatics at Woodley Airfield in a Bulldog Mk. IIA, K1676, apparently on a dare. His aircraft crashed when the tip of the left wing touched the ground. Bader was rushed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Both his legs were amputated one above and one below the knee. Bader made the following laconic entry in his logbook after the crash, "Crashed slow-rolling near ground. Bad show." In 1932, after a long convalescence, throughout which he needed morphine for pain relief, Bader was transferred to the hospital at RAF Uxbridge and fought hard to regain his former abilities after he was given a new pair of artificial legs. In time, his agonising and determined efforts paid off, and he was able to drive a specially modified car, play golf, and even dance. Bader got his chance to prove that he could still fly when, in June 1932, Air Under-Secretary Philip Sassoon arranged for him to take up an Avro 504, which he piloted competently. A subsequent medical examination proved him fit for active service, but in April 1933 he was notified that the RAF had decided to reverse the decision on the grounds that this situation was not covered by King's Regulations. In May, Bader was invalided out of the RAF, took an office job with the Asiatic Petroleum Company (now Shell) and, in October 1933, married Thelma Edwards, a waitress he meet during his convalescence.
Against a background of increasing tensions in Europe in 1937–39, Bader repeatedly requested that the Air Ministry accept him back into the RAF and he was finally invited to a selection board meeting at Adastral House in London's Kingsway. Bader was disappointed, it appeared that he would be refused a flying position but Air Vice-Marshal Halahan, commandant of RAF Cranwell in Bader's days there, personally endorsed him and asked the Central Flying School, Upavon, to assess his capabilities. On October 14th, 1939, the Central Flying School requested Bader report for flight tests on the 18th. He did not wait; driving down the next morning, Bader undertook refresher courses. Despite reluctance on the part of the establishment to allow him to apply for an A.1.B. (full flying category status), his persistent efforts paid off. Bader regained a medical categorisation for operational flying at the end of November 1939 and was posted to the Central Flying School for a refresher course on modern types of aircraft. In November, eight years after his accident, Bader flew solo again in an Avro Tutor; once airborne, he could not resist the temptation to turn the biplane upside down at 600 feet (180 m) inside the circuit area. Bader subsequently progressed through the Fairey Battle and Miles Master (the last training stage before flying Spitfires and Hurricanes). In January 1940, Bader was posted to No. 19 Squadron based at RAF Duxford near Cambridge, where, at 29, he was older than most of his fellow pilots. Geoffrey Stephenson, a close friend from his Cranwell days, was the commanding officer, and it was here that Bader got his first glimpse of a Spitfire. It was thought that Bader's success as a fighter pilot was partly because of his having no legs; pilots pulling high g-forces in combat turns often blacked out as the flow of blood from the brain drained to other parts of the body, usually the legs. As Bader had no legs he could remain conscious longer, and thus had an advantage over more able-bodied opponents.
Between February and May 1940 Bader practised formation flying and air tactics, as well as undertaking patrols over convoys out at sea. Bader found opposition to his ideas about aerial combat. He favoured using the sun and altitude to ambush the enemy, but the RAF did not share his opinions. Official orders/doctrine dictated that pilots should fly line-astern and attack singly. Despite this being at odds with his preferred tactics, Bader obeyed orders, and his skill saw him rapidly promoted to section leader. Bader was subsequently promoted from flying officer to flight lieutenant, and appointed as a flight commander of No. 222 Squadron RAF. Bader had his first taste of combat with No. 222 Squadron RAF, which was based at RAF Duxford and commanded by another old friend of his, Squadron Leader "Tubby" Mermagen. In May, 1940 Germany invaded France as well as it's neighboring countries. RAF squadrons were ordered to provide air supremacy for the Royal Navy during Operation Dynamo. While patrolling the coast near Dunkirk on June 1st, 1940 at around 3,000 ft (910 m), Bader happened upon a Messerschmitt Bf 109 in front of him, flying in the same direction and at approximately the same speed. Believing the pilot must have been a novice, taking no evasive action even though it took more than one burst of gunfire to shoot him down. In the next patrol Bader was credited with a Heinkel He 111 damaged. On June 4th, 1940, his encounter with a Dornier Do 17, which was attacking Allied shipping, involved a near collision while he was firing at the aircraft's rear gunner during a high-speed pass. Shortly after Bader joined 222 Squadron, it moved to RAF Kirton in Lindsey, just south of the Humber. After flying operations over Dunkirk, on June 28th, 1940 Bader was posted to command No. 242 Squadron RAF as acting squadron leader.
No. 242 Squadron was mainly made up of Canadians who had suffered high losses in the Battle of France and when Bader arrived were suffering from low morale. Despite initial resistance to their new commanding officer, the pilots were soon won over by Bader's strong personality and perseverance, especially in cutting through red tape to make the squadron operational again. Bader transformed No. 242 Squadron back into an effective fighting unit. Upon the formation of No. 12 Group RAF, 242 Squadron was assigned to the Group while based at RAF Duxford. After the French campaign, the RAF prepared for the coming Battle of Britain in which the Luftwaffe intended to achieve air supremacy. Once attained, the Germans would attempt to launch Operation Sea Lion, the codename for an invasion of Britain. The battle officially began on July 10th, 1940. On the 11th, Bader scored his first victory with his new squadron. The cloud base was down to just 600 ft, and forward visibility was down to just 2,000 yards. Bader was alone on patrol, and was soon directed toward an enemy aircraft flying north up the Norfolk coast. Spotting the aircraft at 600 yards, Bader recognised it as a Dornier Do 17, and after he closed to 250 yards its rear gunner opened fire. Bader continued his attack and fired two bursts into the bomber before it vanished into cloud. The Dornier, which crashed into the sea off Cromer, was later confirmed by a member of the Royal Observer Corps. Later in the month, Bader scored a further two victories over Messerschmitt Bf 110s. On August 30th, 1940, No. 242 Squadron was moved to Duxford again and found itself in the thick of the fighting. On this date, the squadron claimed 10 enemy aircraft, Bader scoring two victories against Bf 110s. On September 7th, two more Bf 110s were shot down, but in the same engagement Bader was badly hit by a Messerschmitt Bf 109. Bader almost baled out, but recovered the Hurricane. Bader claimed two Bf 109s shot down, followed by a Junkers Ju 88. Two days later, Bader claimed another Dornier. On September 14th, Bader was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his combat leadership. On September 24th, he had been promoted to the war substantive rank of flight lieutenant. During the Battle of Britain, Bader used three Hawker Hurricanes. The first, in which he scored six air victories. The second aircraft, Bader did score one victory and two damaged in it on September 9th. The third, in which he destroyed four more and added one probable and two damaged by the end of September. On December 12th 1940, Bader was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his services during the Battle of Britain. His unit, No. 242 Squadron, had claimed 62 aerial victories.
On March 18th, 1941, Bader was promoted to acting wing commander and became one of the first "wing leaders". Stationed at Tangmere with 145, 610 and 616 Squadrons under his command, Bader led his wing of Spitfires on sweeps and "Circus" operations over north-western Europe throughout the summer campaign. During 1941 his wing was re-equipped with Spitfire VBs, which had two Hispano 20 mm cannon and four .303 machine guns. Bader flew a Mk VA equipped with eight .303 machine guns. Bader's combat missions were mainly fought against Bf 109s over France and the Channel. On May 7th, 1941 he shot down one Bf 109 and claimed another as a probable victory. The following month was more successful for Bader. On July 2nd, 1941 he was awarded the bar to his DSO. On the 12th, Bader found further success, shooting down one Bf 109 and damaging three others between Bethune and St Omer. Bader had been pushing for more sorties to fly in late 1941 but his Wing was tired. He was intent on adding to his score, which, according to the CO of No. 616 Squadron RAF Billy Burton, brought the other pilots and mood in his wing to a near-mutinous state. Bader's immediate superior of OC No. 11 Group, Fighter Command, relented and allowed Bader to continue frequent missions over France even though his score numbered 20 victories. Between March and August 1941, Bader flew 62 fighter sweeps over France.
On August 9th, 1941, Bader flying a Spitfire Mk VA without his wingman on an offensive patrol over the French coast, looking for Messerschmitt Bf 109s. Just after Bader's section of four aircraft crossed the coast, 12 Bf 109s were spotted flying in formation approximately 2,000 feet (600 metres) below them and travelling in the same direction. Bader dived on them too fast and too steeply to be able to aim and fire his guns, and barely avoided colliding with one of them. He levelled out at 24,000 feet (7,300 metres) to find that he was now alone, separated from his section, and was considering whether to return home when he spotted three pairs of Bf 109s a couple of miles in front of him. He dropped down below them and closed up before destroying one of them with a short burst of fire from close range. Bader was just opening fire on a second Bf 109, which trailed white smoke and dropped down, when he noticed the two on his left turning towards him. At this point he decided it would be better to return home; however, making the mistake of banking away from them, Bader believed he had a mid-air collision with the second of the two Bf 109s. Bader's fuselage, tail and fin were gone from behind him, and he lost height rapidly at what he estimated to be 400 mph (640 km/hr) in a slow spin. He jettisoned the cockpit canopy, released his harness pin, and the air rushing past the open cockpit started to suck him out, but his prosthetic leg was trapped. Part way out of the cockpit and still attached to his aircraft, Bader fell for some time before he released his parachute, at which point the leg's retaining strap snapped under the strain and he was pulled free. Bader's aircraft was not found. It is likely that it came down at Mont Dupil Farm near the French village of Blaringhem, possibly near Desprez sawmill. A French witness, Jacques Taffin, saw the Spitfire disintegrating as it came down. He thought it had been hit by anti-aircraft fire, but none was active in the area. There were also no Spitfire remains in the area. The lack of any remains was not surprising, owing to the Spitfire breaking up on its descent. After crashing Bader was soon taken prisoner by the Germans. The Germans treated Bader with great respect. When Bader was taken prisoner, he was sent to a hospital near Saint-Omer, near the place where his father's grave is located. On leaving the hospital, Colonel Adolf Galland and his pilots invited him on to their airfield and they received him as a friend. Bader was cordially invited to sit in the cockpit of Galland's personal Me109. Bader asked Galland if it was possible to test the 109 by "a flight around the airfield". Galland refused him with laughter!
Bader had lost a prosthetic leg when escaping his disabled aircraft. When he had baled out, Bader's right prosthetic leg became trapped in the aircraft, and he escaped only when the leg's retaining straps snapped after he pulled the ripcord on his parachute. General Adolf Galland notified the British of his damaged leg and offered them safe passage to drop off a replacement. Hermann Göring himself gave the green light for the operation. The British responded on August 19th, 1941 with the "Leg Operation" an RAF bomber was allowed to drop a new prosthetic leg by parachute to St Omer, a Luftwaffe base in occupied France. Galland stated in an interview that the aircraft dropped the leg after bombing Galland's airfield. Galland did not meet Bader again until mid-1945, when he arrived at RAF Tangmere as a prisoner of war. Bader escaped from the hospital where he was recovering by tying together sheets. Initially the "rope" did not reach the ground; with the help of another patient, he slid the sheet from under the comatose New Zealand pilot, Bill Russell of No. 485 Squadron, who had had his arm amputated the day before. Russell's bed was then moved to the window to act as an anchor. The plan worked initially. Bader completed the long walk to the safe house despite wearing a British uniform. Unfortunately for him, the plan was betrayed by a woman at the hospital. He hid in the garden when a German staff car arrived outside a house, but was found later. Over the next few years, Bader made himself a thorn in the side of the Germans. He often practised what the RAF personnel called "goon-baiting". He considered it his duty to cause as much trouble to the enemy as possible, much of which included escape attempts. He made so many escape attempts that the Germans threatened to take away his legs. In August 1942, Bader escaped with Johnny Palmer and three others from the camp at Stalag Luft III B in Sagan. Unluckily, a Luftwaffe officer of JG 26 was in the area. Keen to meet the Tangmere wing leader, he dropped by to see Bader, but when he knocked on his door, there was no answer. Soon the alarm was raised, and a few days later, Bader was recaptured. He was finally dispatched to the "escape-proof" Colditz Castle Oflag IV-C on August 18th, 1942, where he remained until April 15th, 1945 when it was liberated by the First United States Army.
After his return to Britain, Bader was given the honour of leading a victory flypast of 300 aircraft over London in June 1945. On July 1st, he was promoted to temporary wing commander. Bader was given the post of the Fighter Leader's School commanding officer. He received a promotion to war substantive wing commander on December 1st, and soon after was promoted to temporary group captain. Unfortunately for Bader, the fighter aircraft's roles had now expanded significantly and he spent most of his time instructing on ground attack and co-operation with ground forces. Also, Bader did not get on with the newer generation of squadron leaders who considered him to be "out of date". It is likely Bader would have stayed in the RAF for some time had his mentor Leigh-Mallory not been killed in an air crash in November 1944, such was the respect and influence he held over Bader, but Bader's enthusiasm for continued service in the RAF waned. In July 1946, Bader retired from the RAF with the rank of group captain to take a job at Royal Dutch Shell. Bader considered politics, and standing as a Member of Parliament for his home constituency in the House of Commons. He despised how the three main political parties used war veterans for their own political ends. Instead, he resolved to join Shell. He spent most of his time abroad flying around in a company-owned Percival Proctor and later a Miles Gemini. In September 1946, Bader was sent on a public relations mission for Shell around Europe and North Africa with United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Lieutenant General James Doolittle, Doolittle having left active duty in January 1946. Bader's first wife, Thelma, developed throat cancer in 1967. Aware that her survival was unlikely, the two spent as much time with each other as possible. After a long battle, she died on January 24th, 1971, aged 64. Bader married Joan Murray on January 3rd, 1973. They spent the remainder of their lives in the village of Marlston, Berkshire. Bader campaigned vigorously for people with disabilities and set an example of how to overcome a disability. In June 1976, Bader was knighted for his services to disabled people. Bader died of a heart attack on September 5th, 1982 at the age of 72 in Chiswick, London. Afterwards On the 60th anniversary of Bader's last combat sortie, his widow Joan unveiled a statue at Goodwood, formerly RAF Westhampnett, the aerodrome from which he took off. The Douglas Bader Foundation was formed in honour of Bader in 1982 by family and friends many also former RAF pilots who had flown with Bader during the Second World War. One of Bader's artificial legs is kept by the RAF Museum at their warehouse in Stafford, and is not on public display.

RWRB Study Guide: Chapter 10
Hi y’all! I’m going through Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue and defining/explaining references! Feel free to follow along, or block the tag #rwrbStudyGuide if you’re not interested!
Earl Grey (267): Earl Grey tea is an incredibly common caffeinated tea. It is the base of a London fog.
Hamilton to Laurens, “you should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent” (267): This quote is from an April 1779 letter and is immediately followed by “But, as you have done it, and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on one condition; that for my sake, of not your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have so artfully instilled into me”. Essentially, “you were rude to me, but I love you so much I forgive you as long as you look after yourself”. Just before it, Hamilton’s like “you taught me what it means to love”. (You can find it here)
Pyramus and Thisbe (268): The pair of lovers whose story inspired Romeo and Juliet, they were separated and could only talk through a wall between their houses (I’ve written a very in-depth analysis of this myth, which you can find here).
Dulles International to Heathrow (268): Dulles International is the airport in Washington, DC, and Heathrow is the classy airport in London.
John Cusack (270): An American actor largely known for his roles in the 1980s. This line in particular likely references Say Anything..., a romantic comedy known in part for a scene where Cusack’s character stands outside a girl’s window and plays music from a boombox.
Y’all had to marry your cousins (270): A reference to the royal tradition of only marrying other royals, which led to a whole lot of inbreeding.
Consummation (275): To consummate a marriage is to have sex for the first time, therefore making it “official”.
Wilde’s complete works (276): Oscar Wilde is an Irish author famous for writing satires and also defining gay culture in the late 1800s.
Fit of pique (277): If someone does something in a fit of pique, they do it spontaneously and out of anger at being wronged.
Mr. Darcy brooding at Pemberley (278): In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (spoilers, though it’s been out for 207 years), after Elizabeth rejects Darcy’s first marriage proposal (which is essentially “your family sucks but you’re hot; marry me”), he goes back to the house his family owns and thinks about it and misses her.
Anmer Hall (278): A house owned by the Crown in Norfolk, England; it is currently home to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
Mel and Sue (280): A comedy duo and hosts of The Great British Bake Off. Sue was outed in 2002, but claims that “being a lesbian is only about the 47th most interesting thing about me”.
South Kensington (284): A district of West London known for its high density of museums and cultural landmarks.
Prince Consort Road (284): Prince Consort Road is a street in London named after Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria. A consort is a royal’s spouse or partner (hence Alex laughing at the idea of his being a prince’s consort)
Ferris Bueller/ Sloane (284-285): Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a popular movie from the 1980s about Ferris, who skips school for a day of wild shenanigans in Chicago. Sloane is his girlfriend who’s roped in for the ride.
Victoria and Albert Museum* (285): The Victoria and Albert Museum, often abbreviated “V&A”, is the world’s largest museum of applied and decorative art and design. (you can explore their collections here)
Renaissance City (285): Room 50a of the V&A is full of Renaissance sculptures. (photo here)
Seated Buddha in black stone (285): The V&A has a bunch of Buddha sculptures, but this one is the only one I saw that’s in black stone.
John the Baptist nude and in bronze (285): Possibly this piece from 1881 by French sculptor Auguste Rodin and is in the V&A’s collection.
Tipu’s Tiger (285): A nearly life-sized semi-automaton that shows a tiger mauling a man in European clothes. The tiger makes growling sounds and the man screams and waves his hand when a handle on the side is turned; it also contains a small pipe organ on the inside and was created to show the power that the Tipu Sultan of India held over invading Brits. The “give it back” that Catherine argues for is officially called repatriation, it would mean that (Western) museums have to give back stolen objects; British museums are famously bad at doing this. (see Tipu’s Tiger here)
Westminster (286): Westminster Abbey, a church in London where royals are crowned and buried. It is covered with intricate carvings and beautiful stained glass.
The Great Bed of Ware (286): A bed made by Hans Vredeman de Vries from the 1590s; it is ten feet wide and made of oak. (see it here)
Twelfth Night (286): A Shakespeare comedy full of chaos that includes a woman cross-dressing, then her twin brother being mistaken for her.
Epocoene (286): A 1609 play that includes a boy dressing as a woman to dupe a man into giving his son an acceptable inheritance.
Don Juan (286): A Spanish figure known for his powers for wooing women; the first text published about him was in the 1630s.
Florence (287): Florence is a city known for its art; it was the cultural center of the Italian renaissance.
Gothic choir screen in the V&A’s Renaissance City (287): This Roodloft, or choir screen, carved by Coenraed van Norenberch is in the back of the Renaissance City in the V&A. It’s a stunning piece; the link above has great pictures and a more in-depth description than I could give.
Zephyr statue by Francavilla (287): You can see this statue here; it was one of thirteen statues commissioned for the garden of a villa near Florence. According to Greek mythology, Zephyr (the west wind) was married to Chloris, goddess of flowers.
Narcissus (by Cioli) (287): This statue may have once been the centerpiece to a fountain with Narcissus looking into an actual pool; it depicts him in the moment he sees and is mesmerised by his reflection.
Pluto stealing Proserpina (287): Likely the statue “The Rape of Proserpina” by Vincenzo de' Rossi. I couldn’t find it on the V&A’s site, but there’s more info here.
Jason with the Golden Fleece (287): This is a sculpture of a very naked Jason, the Greek hero who stole the golden fleece. He was helped by its owner’s daughter, who was in love with him, but whom he later abandoned. You can see the statue here.
Samson Slaying a Philistine (287): You can see this statue here. Henry does a pretty good job of explaining the incredible history behind it; all I have to add from my (limited) research is that it is remarkable in part for the fact that there is no one point on it that draws the eye-- it demands to be looked at completely or not at all.
Victoria and sodomy laws (288): Queen Victoria famously instituted a whole lot of anti-sodomy laws.
Viau on James/George (288): A 1623 poem by Théophile de Viau:
“Apollo with his songs
Debauched young Hyacinthus
Just as Corydon fucked Amyntas,
So Caesar did not spurn boys.
One man fucks Monsieur le Grand de Bellegarde [a friend of Viau],
Another fucks the Comte de Tonnerre.
And it is well known that the King of England
Fucks the Duke of Buckingham.”
“Christ had John, and I have George” (288): This is an actual thing that James I/VI said to the heads of the church. Here’s the full quote, from wikipedia (emphasis is my own): “I, James, am neither a god nor an angel, but a man like any other. Therefore I act like a man and confess to loving those dear to me more than other men. You may be sure that I love the Earl of Buckingham more than anyone else, and more than you who are here, assembled. I wish to speak in my own behalf and not to have it thought to be a defect, for Jesus Christ did the same, and therefore I cannot be blamed. Christ had John, and I have George.”
George iii (289): George III was the king against whom the American colonies revolted. He was deeply religious and instituted laws declaring that royals could not marry without the approval of the court.
Convent church of Santa Chiara in Florence (290): This church is no longer a church, but the altar chapel is in an alcove in the V&A. It is the only Italian Renaissance chapel outside of Italy. (you can see photos of it here and here)
Santa Chiara and Saint Francis of Assisi (290): Saint Francis of Assisi founded a few different monastic orders and is one of the most celebrated saints; Saint Clare of Assisi founded a women’s monastic order and wrote the first set of monastic guidelines by a woman.
Blessed Mother (290): Mary, the mother of Jesus, one of the holiest figures in Catholicism.
“Come, hijo mío, de la miel, porque es Buena, and the honeycomb sweet to thy taste”** (290): “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste. So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off” -- Proverbs 24:13-14, King James Version (yes, that King James. He translated the Bible to make the church stop hating him).
David and Jonathan (290): An aggressively gay couple from the Bible who have been presented as friends for centuries. Jonathan was a prince and David a shepherd, but God promised that David would be king one day. Rather than argue this or hate David for it, Jonathan welcomed David into his household and loved him despite the prophecy that he would one day usurp him. Following Jonathan’s death, David took in Jonathan’s son and looked after him.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, amen (291): Many Christian prayers end with “in the name of the Father, the son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen”. It’s a way of celebrating the god who gives you all of the good things in your life while also giving up control to them.
------
A fill in from chapter 1, as requested by someone on AO3:
Deputy Chief of Staff (Zahra’s position, 23): The Deputy Chief of Staff is the top aide to the president’s top aide, and is responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly within the bureaucracy of the White House.
------
*This museum puts out books called “maker’s guides” that teach you how to make pieces based on things in their collections; they’re super duper cool.
**I’m not a theologian, but I am a pastor’s kid, and just... this gets me. This whole bit, but this Proverb especially. Like obviously there’s the “oh we’re kissing and I’m thinking about honey tasting sweet”, but verse 14 coming in with the “when you’ve found what’s right, you will be rewarded with the confidence of that rightness and you will have hope”? Just kill me outright next time. Don’t make me google my own murder weapon.
------
If there’s anything I missed or that you’d like more on, please let me know! And if you’d like to/are able, please consider buying me a ko-fi? I know not everyone can, and that’s fine, but these things take a lot of time/work and I’d really appreciate it!

Architects return with new single and video for "when we were young"
Photo: Ed Mason
Architects recently released their performance at Abbey Road of their entire full-length album For Those That Wish To Exist. I didn’t expect less than a month later for a new single to drop. I figured with the tour in September coming through Michigan that we would get something in June at the earliest, so what a fucking treat this is.
I also just realized I cannot be in two places at once, and I already have an AOF ticket for 9.15.22. But if you are an Architects die-hard they will be here at the Royal Oak Music Theatre that same day I highly suggest going. What I got to experience of them the last time they were here was unbelievable!
This new song is almost a hyper version of the band’s recent sound and made me feel a sense of pride knowing how much Dan has to do with this song. I think drummers need more time to shine when it comes to songwriting and truly believe we can write some of the best shit out there. For sources of my opinion please see the entire Rush discography.
This video seems to be Dan Searle’s baby, as he wrote the lyrics and directed the video. The song was premiered on Clara Amfo’s BBC Radio 1 Future Sounds show last night, as the ‘Hottest Record in the World’. You can listen to the show and the interview with Sam Carter HERE.
""when we were young is a song that recognises what is gained and what is lost as we get older. as the world unfolds around us we can become overwhelmed by its endless complexity. when i was 20 I thought I had the whole thing sussed, today i’m pretty sure i’ll never understand reality. we lose our innocence as we age, and although fatalism and cynicism can creep in, we also begin to shift our focus toward gratitude for existence and for those that we love.""  -- Dan Searle

Boris Johnson offers MPs say on policy in desperate bid to stave off coup #ٹاپسٹوریز

Boris Johnson offers MPs say on policy in desperate bid to stave off coup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Johnson tried to win over backbenchers by ceding more power on Friday as No 10 insiders warned the increasingly isolated prime minister was becoming “unpredictable and erratic”.
In the latest stage of his desperate bid to stave off a mutiny by Tory MPs, Johnson announced the creation of backbench committees to advise on government policy and promised he would order cabinet ministers to take their view seriously.
But with the resignation of a fifth key aide and a further MP publicly declaring no confidence in him, some supporters of the PM were urging him to short-circuit plots to remove him by calling a vote on his future himself.
Number 10 insiders told The Independent that Mr Johnson was becoming “erractic and unpredictable” in what one termed an “end of days” atmosphere within Downing Street.
The PM tried to put a positive gloss on the shock clearout of senior officials in a pep talk to remaining staff in which he quoted The Lion King as he told them: “Change is good.”

Newly elected Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan, bursts ‘Boris’ bubble’ held by colleague Tim Farron, as she celebrates following her victory in the North Shropshire by-election

But one official said not all of those watching the cabinet room address by video link were impressed.
“He needs to show people he is serious, but then he can’t help himself,” said the No 10 insider. “Like with the Lion King, but also with Operation Save Big Dog and the Peppa Pig madness.”
Downing Street denied that the prime minister was losing control of the situation, after 24 hours in which key ally Munira Mirza walked out in protest at his “scurrilous” attempt to blame Keir Starmer for the failure to prosecute paedophile Jimmy Savile, and cabinet colleagues Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid distanced themselves from the PM over the slur.
The PM’s official spokesperson said that the resignations of principal private secretary Martin Reynolds, chief of staff Dan Rosenfield and director of communications were “mutually agreed” with Mr Johnson as part of his plan to reshape No 10 as an Office of the Prime Minister.
But the PM was hit by the unexpected departure of a member of his policy unit, Elena Narozanski, and the announcement by Red Wall MP Aaron Bell that he had submitted a letter of no confidence to the chair of the backbench 1922 Committee.
Mr Bell was the 13th Tory MP to publicly call on Johnson to go, saying his mishandling of the Partygate scandal amounted to a “breach of trust” which made his position untenable.
And former Tory chairman Chris Patten branded the PM a “moral vacuum” who had turned the Conservative Party into an “English nationalist, populist Johnsonian cult”.
In a letter apparently designed to flatter Tory MPs into giving up plans to oust him, Mr Johnson said he wanted to improve Downing Street by harnessing the “energy, experience and insight” of the parliamentary party.
In an attempt to move on from the Partygate scandal, he said: “I promised change and that is what we will now deliver together.”
In his address to Downing Street staff, the prime minister acknowledged that the government was going through “challenging times” and misjudgments had been made.
But he told them: “As Rafiki in the Lion King says, change is good, and change is necessary even though it’s tough. We’ve got to get on with our job of serving the people of this country.”
The revival of the committees, first established under David Cameron, was broadly welcomed among Tory MPs who have complained of being shut out of the decision-making process by a No 10 machine drawn tightly around the PM.
“If he is seeking ideas from beyond a group of advisers who don’t appear to have advised him very well, that is definitely welcome,” said one MP.
But another told The Independent: “Colleagues certainly like the idea of being consulted more, but I’m not sure that these committees had any influence under Cameron and I doubt they will now. It’s not going to change many minds.”
One senior backbencher who is not seeking Johnson’s removal said that the idea of the PM “doing a John Major” and himself calling a vote on his future – as his predecessor did in 1995 – was gaining ground on the Tory benches.
“If he called a confidence vote now, I think he’d win it and he’d have 12 months in which he couldn’t be challenged again,” said the veteran MP. “If he waits for the 54 letters to force a vote after the police inquiry and the publication of the Sue Gray report, I’m not so sure he’d survive.
“If I was advising him, I’d tell him to do it. It would look bold and it would save him from being undermined further by weeks more of this uncertainty.”
A Number 10 insider told The Independent that the PM’s mood towards his predicament was swinging wildly.
“He’s been erratic. Boisterous and confident one moment and then bleak and full of recriminations the next,” said the source, speaking anonymously.
“It’s becoming a pattern. He was difficult to handle after he’d had Covid and after Dom (Cummings his former top adviser) left, but now he’s even worse. He’ll make a mess, like Savile, Peppa Pig, the early lines on parties – against the clearest advice – and then play the victim when it blows up in his face.”
An ally of Mr Johnson’s told The Independent that prime minister was “smarting from his injuries,” and “acting in an unpredictable way.”
Tory MPs called to one-to-one meetings so he could plead for their support said that he “plays the victim” and insisted he did nothing wrong over the parties.
But a government spokesperson said: “These claims are completely untrue.
“The Prime Minister is focused on delivering the people’s priorities. This includes levelling up, supporting households facing cost of living pressures from energy bills and continuing to lead the response to the situation in Ukraine.”
Mr Johnson’s official spokesperson insisted that the PM’s relations with Mr Sunak were “good”, after the chancellor yesterday admitted the government had lost public trust.
Mr Javid today joined Sunak in distancing himself from Johnson’s discredited claim that, in his previous role as director of public prosecutions, Sir Keir had failed to prosecute Savile.
“Keir Starmer, when he was DPP, did a good job and he should be respected for it,” the health secretary told reporters. “It is a tough job and he deserved absolute respect for that.”

Crisis for Boris Johnson as second close aide quits in one day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Johnson’s leadership has been plunged deeper into crisis by the shock resignation of two of his closest aides – including an ally of 14 years who quit in protest at his “scurrilous” smear linking Keir Starmer with the paedophile Jimmy Savile.
In a scathing resignation letter, policy chief Munira Mirza said there was “no fair or reasonable basis” for Monday’s attack and made clear that Johnson had resisted pleas from advisers to apologise.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak – tipped as Mr Johnson’s most likely successor if he is forced from office – distanced himself from the slur, telling reporters: “Being honest, I wouldn’t have said it.”
And Johnson’s former chief aide turned bitter enemy Dominic Cummings gleefully declared Ms Mirza’s departure “an unmistakeable signal the bunker is collapsing and this PM is finished”.
Confronted with her comments in an interview with 5News during a trip to Blackpool to publicise his “levelling up” strategy, Mr Johnson said: “I don’t agree with that.”
He again refused to apologise for suggesting that, as director of public prosecutions, Starmer was responsible for the failure to prosecute Savile for sex crimes.
Just three hours after Ms Mirza’s bombshell letter dropped, Downing Street director of communications Jack Doyle announced to No 10 staff that he too was leaving.
Mr Doyle – who had been named in the Partygate scandal for handing out awards at a 2020 Christmas drinks event in No 10 –insisted it had always been his plan to go at this point, adding that recent weeks had taken “a terrible toll” on his family life.

One Downing Street staffer told The Independent: “I think he’d wanted to leave for some time and he had been under huge pressure. He didn’t get everything right, but he tried his best for the PM.”
The insider said the atmosphere inside No 10 had been “agonising” as officials wait for the outcome of the police investigation into 12 allegedly lockdown-breaching parties as well as the publication of the full Sue Gray report.
“The atmosphere is terrible,” said the staffer. “And several people have been horrified by the Savile comment and the failure to apologise. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more resignations soon. People are exhausted.”
The walkouts came on a fraught day for Mr Johnson’s administration, with power-sharing arrangements in Northern Ireland threatened by the resignation of DUP first minister Paul Givan in protest over the impact of the protocoal negotiated by the PM as part of his Brexit deal.
And the cost-of-living crisis facing millions of families across the UK was brought starkly home by a £693-a-year hike in the cap on domestic energy bills, forcing Mr Sunak to offer a package of assistance worth up to £350.
It is understood that advisers urged Mr Johnson not to make the claim in the House of Commons debate on Partygate on Monday that Sir Keir, as DPP, “spent more time prosecuting journalists and failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile, as far as I can see”.
It was seen as a classic “dead cat” move of the type deployed repeatedly by Johnson in order to distract attention away from his own difficulties.
But it horrified many Tory MPs, and was branded “disgraceful” and “Trumpian” by former home secretary Amber Rudd.
After standing by the unfounded allegation in a newspaper interview and at prime minister’s questions in the Commons – when Starmer accused him of “parroting the conspiracy theories of violent fascists” – Mr Johnson finally backed down on Thursday, telling reporters: “I totally understand that he had nothing to do personally with those decisions.”
But Ms Mirza’s letter made clear that aides had urged him to go much further and apologise to the Labour leader, who was cleared of any responsibility for decisions relating to Savile in an official QC-led report more than a decade ago.
In her resignation letter, obtained by The Spectator magazine, she condemned the PM’s “inappropriate and partisan reference to a horrendous case of child sex abuse”.
“I believe it was wrong for you to imply this week that Keir Starmer was personally responsible for allowing Jimmy Savile to escape justice,” she said.
“There was no fair or reasonable basis for that assertion. This was not the usual cut and thrust of politics.”
And she added: You tried to clarify your position today but, despite my urging, you did not apologise for the misleading impression you gave.
“You are a better man than many of your detractors will ever understand which is why it is so desperately sad that you let yourself down by making a scurrilous accusation against the leader of the Opposition.”
Mr Sunak found himself assailed by questions about the Savile slur at a Downing Street press conference to promote his assistance for families hit by soaring energy bills.
“Being honest, I wouldn’t have said it, and I’m glad the prime minister clarified what he meant,” said the chancellor.
But he insisted he continues to back the PM, saying: “He has my support and I’m glad that he is doing what he is doing.”
Sunak’s deputy at the Treasury, chief secretary Simon Clarke, came to the PM’s defence, telling BBC2’s Newsnight: “I have the highest regard for the chancellor .. but it is my view that it was a perfectly reasonable remark for the PM to have made”
However, the Tory mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, refused to give Johnson his backing over the Partygate scandal.
He told the Birmingham Post: “What he’s done, very clearly, is wrong. It’s bad by any measure. And I find it very hard to understand how on earth it could have happened.”
The blow of Ms Mirza’s departure is all the more devastating for Mr Johnson because she was one of few remaining members of his inner circle to have stuck with him through his time as mayor of London and survived recent years’ vicious infighting at No 10. He once hailed her as one of the five women who have most inspired him.
Nikki da Costa, a former Downing Street director of legislative affairs, said: “Munira was the very best of No10 – this is a huge loss.”
Downing Street announced the appointment of the MP Andrew Griffith as her replacement, saying: “We are very sorry Munira has left No 10 and are grateful for her service and contribution to government.”

Autumn Days Out in Norfolk
Norfolk is a beautiful place to visit in the autumn. Whether you want a dose of nature and experience the changes of the seasons. Or if you are here for your family’s half term holiday there is plenty do to whatever the weather. Here is my local guide to the best places to head to this autumn in Norfolk.  This blog post focuses mainly  in East Norfolk where the Norfolk Coast meets the Norfolk Broads. I am based in Winterton-on-sea.
Experience Nature
Norfolk is a great place to be if you want to watch the seasons change and experience wildlife.
Visit the seals and coast.
A must visit if you are in the local area. The seal colony at Horsey has been growing steadily for some years now. The colony has harbour seals or common seals as well as grey seals. In Autumn we see both types of seals on the beach at Horsey in large numbers (and increasingly at Winterton-on-sea). Grey seals have their babies on the beach from mid-November onwards. Last year over 2000 grey seal babies were recorded. If you visit Horsey this autumn you should get to see both types of seals on the beach. The beach at Horsey will be closed to the public from the end of October, to protect the baby grey seals who can’t go into the sea until they are over 6 weeks old. You can view the seals from a number of viewing platforms on the dunes. I have written a detailed blog on how to get the best out of a visit to see the baby seals here.
Seals at Horsey
Top tip: Tracking the seals down can be trickier. I tend to ask people when I arrive where they are and then head to the right part of the beach. Please note there is no public toilet at Horsey. Poppylands the 1940s tea room, at Horsey gap, is a great stop-off point - they do great cake.
Visit the Broads National Park
The beautiful Broads make for excellent wildlife spotting and days out in nature. I’d recommend hiring an electric boat from Martham Ferry Boat company and experience Martham Broad, Horsey and Hickling. At dusk you can hear the pink footed geese and watch the cranes fly over. Ross' wildlife tours, operating out of Horsey to rave reviews, are back for half term (kids and dogs welcome). Text Ross on 07791526440 for availability. Or visit Hickling National Nature Reserve.  At Strumpshaw Fen nature reserves you can book  your own personal wildlife safari with the RSPB warden.
Tip: If you hire a boat, always go electric. Quiet and no fumes - why wouldn’t you?
Top picnic spot and place to see brilliant autumn colours
How Hill.
My favourite place in the Broads. It has everything (apart from a tea room) that you could want for a picnic spot including mini museum, boat trips, and nature reserve. I made a little film of my friends and family enjoying How Hill.
youtube
On October 23 there is a delightful Craft Fayre on at the house. 11am-4pm with refreshments, craft, and activities for kids.
Tip: there is lots to How Hill but it’s easy to miss. Check to see if the main house and gardens are open. It will say on a notice board outside the house and seek out the ‘Secret water gardens’ which will be beautiful in autumn. You enter them via the woods heading north from the house.
Great options for kids over the half terms weeks.
October 18-26 - Norwich Science Festival at the Forum
I love the Norwich science festival. This year it has nine days of inspirational exhibitions, sensational shows and hands-on science activities for all ages and all levels of knowledge. It is an absolute must to visit with your young scientists. There are, mostly, free shows for kids but book in advance.  Find out more about the Norwich Science Festival
Tip: The Forum in central Norwich has drop in events, these tend to be busy but good to dip into either side of a show or workshop.
October 19-31 - The Glorious Glowing Lantern Parade at BeWILDerwood
Always one of my top recommendations for kids from 3 – 11 years old especially for the half term week. Apparently, as dusk falls, BeWILDerwood will glow in a magical light extravaganza. See the woods in a fantastical new light as all the inhabitants come out to celebrate a Glorious Glowing Lantern Parade!  Check out this short film on the parade
youtube
Tip: I’d recommend arriving around 1 or 2pm if you want to take part both in the lantern parade and in the usual activity. There is a good 5 hours of fun on a normal day. Outside of half term it's open at the weekends.
October 23 - Family Survival School 10:30am - 3:30pm at Sheringham Park
Our friend, Rob, at Sheringham Park puts on marvellous family days at the National Trusts beautiful Sheringham Park and this event sounds great.  "Hone your survival skills with a bitesize bushcraft adventure! Build a shelter, light a fire, forage for food and learn how to navigate with a map and compass. Cooking on a campfire is one of the '50 things to do before you are 11¾'"
Tip: You need to book. Sheringham is a great place to take bikes for kids or just wonder around the beautiful park land and then head into the town for fish and chips  on the beach at dusk
October 18-27 - Halloween Hoot at Hirsty's Family Fun Park
If you are looking to entertain your family and want the pumpkin carving to not happen at home, try the Halloween Hoot at Hirsty’s Famiy Fun Park. Pick and carve your pumpkin on site, wheel it back to the carving tent and start creating your own masterpiece - then try out other craft activities before playing in the Fun Park.
Tip: Alternatively you pick your own pumpkins at the Tacons farm shop in Rollesby and even take part in their pumpkin fun run on the 26th October.
October 19-November 3 - Fang-tastic Family Fun at Trick or Tweet at Pensthorpe Natural Park
We love Pensthorpe’s  beautiful gardens and brilliant indoor and outdoor play areas.  This half term you can join Pensthorpe Natural Park's Trick or Tweet which will allow families to discover the grim and gruesome side of nature and celebrate the magic of autumn outdoor.
October 19-27 - Fairhaven Fairy Folk Halloween Trail
These guys always put on great events. Throughout half term you and your kids can hunt for little fairy doors in the trees and discover which fairies and spirits live there. Fairhaven helps reveal how in recent centuries, Halloween has replaced the ancient celebration of Samhain, when our Celtic ancestors celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Fairy Folk Halloween Trail is free with garden entry plus 10p for the trail sheet and runs every day from Saturday, October 19 to Sunday, October 27.
Tip: Their café is great and reasonable. Dogs allowed on leads.
October 19-27 - Spooky Fun at Pumpkin Festival, Wroxham Barns
Perfect for younger children, combine a visit to Wroxham Barn’s junior farm with their pumpkin festival. You'll be able to make potions and wands with your kids. There are prizes for the scariest costumes.
October 19-November 3 - Halloween Spooktacular 2019 at The Hippodrome Circus
If you are anywhere near Great Yarmouth we’d recommend a trip to the Hippodrome and see Great Yarmouth’s permanent circus spectacle. Ideal for families with kids 6 plus.
Arts and Crafts Fairs
Norfolk has an increasingly good arts and craft movement. These are a few local ones I’d really recommend.
October 19 20 Thrigby Arts Festival 10am – 4pm (free)
Beautiful crafts from pottery, weavers, upholsters – great gifts. See their Facebook page here. I go every year, there is hand on stuff for the kids to do and I even manage to buy some  early Christmas presents.
October 23 How Hill Trust Craft Fayre 11am – 4pm adults £3
A large range of local craft stalls and demonstrations. Gardens open. Orienteering activity and dyke dipping for children. Homemade cakes, refreshments, and light lunches available throughout the day.
