#OTD in 1936 – The Daunt Rock Rescue.
The Ballycotton lifeboat ‘Mary Stanford’ returns to its home port in East Cork following probably the most famous sea rescue in Irish maritime history. Ballycotton fisherman Patrick Sliney was Coxswain of the life boat which spent over 60 hours at sea, in a successful attempt to save six men from the lightship that guarded the Daunt Rock. The Royal National Lifeboat Institute website states: ‘A…

For 200 years, RNLI volunteers have saved people in desperate need at sea. And that’s all down to kindness. Lifeboat crews and lifeguards are known for their courage. But none of their incredible rescues would be possible without the kindness shown by the public. Since 1824, the kit, training, lifeboats and fuel they’ve needed to save lives has been funded by kind donations.

Are there children in the family? Join Storm Force, the kids club of the RNLI
On Saturday, over £900.00 was raised for the RNLI!!! This incredible amount was achieved by the RNLI's City of Manchester branch and the Chorlton Methodist Church. Local residents bought plants and homemade cakes, with all proceeds going to help the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.
Also present was an RNLI stand and among the conversations had, included giving out information on Storm Force, the RNLI’s club for the under-11's. Storm Force membership makes a fun gift for any occasion, including birthdays and Christmas.
For just £14.00 per year, Storm Force brings our young people closer to the world of lifeboats and lifeguards. Kids get their own crew bag, pencil case and stickers, along with copies of Storm Force magazine, which is packed with real rescue stories and water safety advice.
One of my personal favorites of Storm Force membership, is the access children get to the RNLI's 'crew room', which has fun video games, engaging real life rescue videos and a whole lot more. This provides a safe online environment for children within the RNLI supporters community.

A Good Omens mini-ficlet to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI
The year is 1824. For once, it's Aziraphale who's received a commendation from Upstairs for something he's only just hearing about -- and Upstairs NEVER hands out commendations, so this must be something really impressive!
So, he and Crowley take a trip to Douglas on the Isle of Man to see what this new "National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck" is all about, have a fascinating chat with the founder, Sir William Hillary, then go out for fish and chips (and possibly "fish and chips" *nudge nudge wink wink* -- innuendo inspired by @vidavalor's epic Fish meta)

The Rescue Of The Forrest Hall
How the Forrest Hall was rescued and what happened afterwards #RNLI #Lynmouth
By the time the crew of the Louisa had completed their herculean task of dragging their vessel the thirteen miles up and down Countisbury Hill with a little help from their friends and eighteen horses, launched it, and rowed an hour out to the Forrest Hall, the stricken ship had managed to drop its anchors but was still drifting slowly close to Hurlstone Point. Some of the lifeboat crew boarded…

told u it was real
if u can't read the small in yellow so well:
"What you can do: Check with the place you bought them, as they may offer a "take back" scheme. Ask at local marinas, life raft service stations, local authorities or waste disposal businesses."
^added this text because personally it really irks me when i cannot make out what a screenshot/photo says. even if u guys won't be handing in any flares to the RNLI.... i don't think at least....
had a beach episode today and i saw a sign/notice outside the lifeboats area saying (to the effect of):
“please don’t donate your old pyrotechnics to us they might not work or be dangerous :(“
first of all yes. my eyes laser-focused on the first part of one of those words and blacked out. you know me.
second WHO THE HELL JUST OWNS FLARES, IN A BIG ENOUGH QUANTITY THAT IT IS A BIG ENOUGH PROBLEM THEY CAN DONATE ENOUGH TO NEED A SIGN SAYING NOT TO DO THAT?!?
tf2 ass predicament. got me thinkin mannco WOULD do that. osha who. i mean theyre not trying to save each other they’re doing the opposite
#and the super small text- probably the most unimportant- i cannot even read in my own photo; probably couldnt see it irl either /badeyesight#rnli is 'royal national lifeboat institute' btw to save u a search! one of my dream jobs but most of it is voluntary unpaid </3#speakin of volunteering. would u guys believe me if i told u i wanted to be a firefighter for many years

new James Fitzjames display thing in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich - at least I’d say it’s new because I’ve been several times and never seen it before and it makes reference to his remains having been recently identified!
OBJECT IN FOCUS
An act of 'gallant heroism'
On 1 February 1835 ship's mate James Fitzjames saved the life of James Dickinson, who had fallen into the River Mersey near Liverpool. Fitzjames was on board the ship George Canning when customs officer Dickinson, who was helping to load supplies from a steamer, slipped into the river. In a letter to his uncle, Fitzjames described how he spotted Dickinson - who was unable to swim - 'floundering away like a porpoise'.
Without hesitation, he jumped fully clothed into the fast-moving and freezing cold Mersey.
He managed to keep Dickinson's head above the water until they were picked up by a small boat a considerable distance downriver. Much to Fitzjames's embarrassment, his story made the national newspapers and he received several awards in recognition of his bravery.
Presentation cup
E. Terry & Co., 1830-31
The Corporation of Liverpool presented this silver cup to seaman James Fitzjames at a celebratory dinner in February 1835 after he saved the life of James Dickinson. He later took it back to his ship, where it was filled with mulled port and the whole crew drank to his health. Fitzjames was also granted Freedom of the City of Liverpool, while the Royal Humane Society and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) awarded him silver lifesaving medals (the RNLI medal is also in the National Maritime Museum's collection).
MY CHOICE
'I chose this cup because the person it was awarded to deserves more recognition. James Fitzjames is a true maritime hero who I think history has neglected. After the act of bravery for which he was given the cup, Fitzjames went on to have a distinguished naval career, before losing his life during Sir John Franklin's ill-fated Arctic expedition (1845-48). Using DNA analysis, researchers finally identified his remains, recovered from King William Island, Canada, in September 2024. It was this moment that inspired me to suggest this object for display!
