hehehe going to the Royal Tyrell Museum again in August, and I am boiling over with an idea
So I've been to the Royal Tyrell 3 times already before this, it is such an amazing museum :,) but this time I want to work on some paleoart if I can
So the plan is to just go around and reconstruct the dinosaurs as they are mounted in the museum, and i think that will be really fun as I usually go off of 2D skeletal drawings as a reference for accuracy, so this’ll be like drawing my dinosaur models… just, skinned and de-meat-ifyed (?)
If anyone a specific Canadian dinosaur or maybe Montana-area ones as well (I think Tyrell has a few) let me know and I can keep an eye out for them :) and hopefully sneak in a little doodle!

Borealopelta markmitchelli
Known as a nodosaur, this 110 million-year-old, armored plant-eater is the best preserved fossil of its kind ever found. It still has preserved skin remnants on its face and toe pads.

T. rex Madness Final! Fossil Specimen (Black Beauty: RTMP 81.6.1) vs. Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081)
Tumblr media
Fossil Specimen (Black Beauty: RTMP 81.6.1) – Black Beauty, discovered in 1980, is distinguished both by its striking appearance and by being the first T. rex specimen to receive a nickname. It is on display at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta, Canada and has replica casts around the world.
Tumblr media
Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081) – Arguably the most famous of all T. rex specimens. Discovered in 1990 through impressive luck and observation by the fossil’s namesake, Sue Hendrickson, Sue is also one of the best T. rex fossils, being 90% complete by bulk. Following a lengthy dispute over ownership, Sue was put up for auction, inciting fears that the fossil would end up in a private collection. With the help of various donors, Sue was purchased by the Field Museum in Chicago, and has been a fixture there ever since. Sue’s bones show signs of various injuries, including a parasitic infection in the skull. In 2018, Sue was moved to a new room at the Field Museum, featuring an updated assembly and an informational exhibit featuring the world in which Sue lived.

You must choose . There is no other , you cannot change around who goes where . Either you get in the greyhound bus with them or you do not . You can choose how the day goes however

My hyperfixation of the week is Borealopelta markmitchelli, and I need all of my followers to know about it right now:
Tumblr media
This little cutie is an 18-ft long, 3.9 ton dinosaur that was so perfectly preserved you can make out each individual scale on its hide. You can see the leathery creases on the palm of its foot. I can clearly picture this thing breathing and moving and snuffling around in the bushes with that adorable little snoot. I cannot overstate how utterly THRILLED I am just knowing that a specimen like this exists, and that there could be more like it waiting for us out there. The world is beautiful and amazing and also freakin' hardcore, I mean look at those spikes, this thing was an actual living dragon.
There's a presentation from Dr. Caleb Brown of the Royal Tyrell Museum going over all the absolutely insane stuff we've been able to learn from this one specimen and if you are anything like me and wish to have a real-life ancient monster living in your head rent-free for several days on end, I highly recommend giving it a watch on YouTube.

Process shots of my latest acrylic painting, as promised!
The next acrylic addition to my Cretaceous Alberta series is already under way (a pair of baby styracosaurus), but there will definitely be a ton of watercolours along the way :)
+ heading out to Drumheller to visit the Royal Tyrell Museum in a day for the 4th time (listen, it's the best museum ok?) and I'll be spending ~9 hrs there this time to draw the mounts. That'll def add a lot to my Cretaceous Alberta collection. Let me know if there's a specific species you'd like me to look out for to draw there :D

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you! get to know your mutuals and followers (ू•‧̫•ू⑅)♡
It’s an obvious answer, but my wife! We’ve been together 15 years this September, and I’m still so happy to spend time with her. There’s been a lot of changes for both of us over that time, but I’m really glad we got to go through it all together. @chickwhatdigsgiantrobots
Natural history museums. I will visit any and all natural history museums in any city I go to. We took a detour coming home from Vancouver to stop in Drumheller to see the Royal Tyrell. Very excited for this weekend cause I’m gonna get to see the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
Shenandoah National Park. It’s a short drive away from home, and I love going out there. I love the Appalachian mountains so much. Seeing the hills start to show up in the distance just instantly lifts my spirits.
Birds! Any bird. Any time I get to see a bird, my day is a little brighter. There are chickadees and dark-eyed juncos outside on the patio at work right now, and I am content.
Old graveyards. I just really like walking among the old stones, seeing the ways people wanted to honor their loved ones. The epitaphs, the symbols on the graves, the statues. There’s something really sweet and solemn about seeing the memorial of someone who died over a hundred years ago, and acknowledging their name and their existence.
(I also got sent this by @umbralaether , but I’m gonna try to come up with 5 more things for that one!)

after linner we found a place to hike. since it was so busy at the royal tyrell museum where they have a couple hikes.
i found this place on the AllTrails app, midland provincial park. boy we’re we not prepared for this. what we thought was the beginning of the trail was a shortcut and it was sooo fucking steep. it was also the last hole for disc golf apparently.
