Summary: Colonel Mustang recovers his Lieutenant.

My thoughts: We love a good rescue mission, and this one has it all. The masterful starsinherblood strikes every chord: angst, action, a clever Riza and an unhinged protective Roy. Perfectly in-character, and the details are VIVID. If you love the "touch her and die" trope, this one's for you. I think about this story a lot.

Word count: 24K

Summary: Roy and Riza break the rules, keep their vows, and fall in love.

Excerpt: “If we’re going to be married, you better call me Roy,” he said.

“Riza,” she said, and laid her hand in his with a smile. It was the kind of smile that snuck up on you, not dazzling but so obviously warm and genuine Roy could feel his own tentative smile widen and become real. He marvelled at how successfully she had managed to hide herself away with her plain cropped hair and downcast eyes.

“Riza, then,” he said. I’m going to do right by you, Riza.

My thoughts: This plot is brilliant: Roy and Riza are married by her father's arrangement just before Roy leaves for Ishval. The events of FMAB unfold as in canon, but Roy and Riza are platonically, secretly married the entire time, and they are slowly falling for each other. This story's pacing, the slow burn, is to DIE for. I honestly wish this was canon. It fits so freaking well. And be sure to follow it up with the short sequel, life between contractions (rated T, word count 3K), where Team Mustang finally learns the truth about Roy and Riza's relationship.

Summary/Excerpt: "That Hawkeye" Hughes asks Roy much later, as they pick the remains of their gruel at the fire. "Is she a friend or something more?"

My thoughts: I've seen this one on a lot of rec lists, but it truly deserves to be there. I'm a sucker for quick reads that deliver a gut punch, and this is one of those. In less than two thousand words, spiraetspera paints a beautifully tragic picture of Roy and Riza's shared past: his mentorship by her father, and their time in Ishval.

R. Hawkeye: K.I.A by sevendeadlyseas

Rating: M

Word count: 3.3K

Summary: It will be easy paperwork. A simple note under her file, a red stamp marked K.I.A; killed in action, protecting her superior officer.

Roy copes with the aftermath of Riza’s death.

Excerpt: He wants to be angry, to shoot back and kill the person who did this. But that would defeat the entire point of everything they’d worked for already. Riza would hate him for it.

Instead he screams at the medic until his voice is coarse, and begs her lifeless body to wake. 

He cries himself to sleep that night. While he wakes up in the morning, Riza never will again.

My thoughts: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. This one will curb-stomp your soul. But its so amazingly written, beautiful and tragic, the pain is well worth it.

Why are you calling this a “big bang” when it’s clearly meant to be a zine/anthology? The title is extremely misleading since big bangs are supposed to be far more open fandom events with no set cap on entry other than making sure there are enough people, since each writer is paired with an artist. I’m asking this genuinely since it seems like you guys have a clear idea of what you want out of this, ie an anthology, why are you not clearly labeling it as such? I also don’t want other big bangs to see this as the blue print for their projects because I really enjoy how open big bangs are since so many zines are incredibly exclusive. Also asking people to write 100k word fics feels like an insane amount to ask. You all do realize that is longer than most novels, right?

and if you had bothered to read the faq, you will see that it is directly addressed as to why there is a anthology portion as well as the big bang. i am well aware that 100,000+ words is a lot of writing. that's why there's an option for people who want to participate, but at a much smaller scale of just 5000+ words.

you will have also seen that this is not my first rodeo when it comes to fandom events. i help run @royaiweek, @fmasecretsanta, and @fmabigbangs as well. i know i'm one of the most competent people in the fma fandom to run an event like this, but i also set myself parameters so i wouldn't be struggling with admin.

if you don't like how this event is being run, or described, then i implore you to go make your own event. the whole point of me making the royai big bang was because i wanted to see more long-form royai work. this fandom is over 20 years old!! i am continually surprised every day by how much work is still being created and i wanted to contribute to that.

This is not the kiss of two newlyweds from East City who met at university, who enjoy going to the market together on Sundays and cozy nights in front of the fire in their little apartment, who might start trying for a baby soon, who live the life Riza might have once dreamed of as a little girl. This is filled with the memories of burns and blood and promises that run as deep as hell. It’s every nightmare and code word and bullet-hole and scar. It tastes like an overwhelming ache; the impending lack of a future, the yearning for something impossible, the equivalent exchange they’ve subjected themselves to in order to make things right. - or, an undercover kiss.

"Are you ever going to spend the night?" Roy asked her.

The streets were empty and the night was quiet. His question, breathed out in a whisper, seemed to ring all around them. But Riza had an answer ready.

"You wouldn't forgive me if I said yes."

"You don't even hesitate," he pouted.

"Am I supposed to act like a lovesick schoolgirl, sir?" Roy raised an eyebrow, and she blushed, catching his thought a bit too late. "Forget I said anything."

This was them. This was their life. Truth to be told, the temptation would have been much greater had Riza not found her own rhythm in the chaos. In another life, they could have led a quiet, easy existence. But more than once, Riza had wondered if that life would have suited them. Their blood boiled too fervently. One day, she'd opened her eyes and had found herself surrounded by those whom she loved. Friends, superiors and subordinates. Her dog, her grandfather, and the love of her life. And that day, Riza had known.

For all the demons in her closet, for all the pain and heartbreak and regrets, there was no point in living it with her heart closed. Her dreams were broken at the foundation. She'd been silly, arrogant. She'd been naive, even after she'd sworn off naivete. Her state of mind was a grain of sand in the relentless desert winds. It meant little. It changed nothing. It was a free-for-all without winners or losers. Riza could be miserable until her dying breath, or she could find peace in the path she had chosen. In the bigger picture, it was all the same.

But to Roy, it made all the difference. So as they walked back from their late dinner, Riza relaxed her shoulders and let his voice lure her into something like contentment. As they said goodnight, Riza held him close and didn't protest when he stole a kiss.

"Can I come up to see Hayate?"

"Nice try, sir." But upon seeing his hazy eyes, upon dwelling on his nonchalant insistence, her shoulders deflated. "Alright. I'll make us tea."

This was their life. There was no point in forgetting to live.
