Was looking for patterns for short round sock toes done toe up that I could make any sense of, and found both that and a way to m1 (m1r, I think ?) that I can physically execute ! It's just yarning over and then on the next round when you do it knitting the yo thru the back loop. Unsure how that would work flat, maybe you reverse yarn over ? But great in the round...
Anyway finally seeing what make ones look like is interesting, they're a lot more subtle than kfb or lli/rli

Very curious about your tags on frogged yarn being difficult, and need some clarification - are you saying that you always find a difference in your tension using frogged yarn, even if you've washed it to de-kink it? Or just that that's something that happens in some cases?
oh no - to clarify, yarn that's been frogged and de-kinked (by washing or by steaming as appropriate) is generally completely fine to knit with, but knitting with freshly frogged yarn can cause some problems. it's worse if the yarn was blocked before frogging, also. when knitting with curled-up yarn you generally tend to get a result that is slightly smaller and much, uh, lumpier than you do when knitting with un-curly yarn, whether that's new yarn or yarn that was frogged and treated.

Finish it February
My only favorite knitting YouTuber Roxanne Richardson is gearing up for Finish it February and I feel like that's something knitblr would like to know about!
Organise your UFO's into yay, nay, and undecided
Work through the yay's, easiest to finish first
Or do whatever you like! Like mend or clear your stash.
Roxanne's ravelry group also has discussions on the topic.

This might be an odd or personal question, but could I ask how you started knitting and where you started as a beginner? Or what would you recommend? I’ve tried to join clubs and groups irl, but there’s so much drama and gossiping. When I said I didn’t want to take part in that aspect, they started ostracizing and gossiping about me. Any websites, yt channels or books you’d recommend for a beginner?
--
Haha.
My friend, this does not even register on the scale of deeply personal or odd questions people have sent me.
I've been trying to remember exactly how I started and why (like, even before this ask). I think it was on a family vacation to Scotland the summer before I started college. That would have been in 1999.
I taught myself from one of those awful 90s pamphlets with the line drawings. They're a nightmare compared to being able to see someone do the motions in person or even in a video. I had some awful plastic needles and no guidance on yarn and just knit with what I found at some shop there. Do not recommend!
I achieved what I wanted during college, which was to make a nice cable-knit sweater that I still wear, and then I got frustrated with crappy acrylic yarn and drifted away from knitting until a year or so ago.
The fact is, I basically didn't do beginner projects. I moved straight from making one rectangle to making grandiose sweaters or whatever else struck my fancy. (But if you want to know, I was using Viking Patterns for Knitting and a bunch of Alice Starmore books, all of which you can still buy.) I know plenty of people who did it this way, but you certainly don't have to.
And you definitely don't need to learn from a terrible 90s printed pamphlet!
Luckily, nowadays, you can find a tutorial on just about anything on Youtube. I enjoy watching the technical and historical types discuss quirks of knitting you might not think of without years of practice or research.
Roxanne Richardson is great, for example.
Look for somebody old, not wearing a lot of makeup, and not talking about their indie dyeing/yarn business and you'll avoid most of the clowns who learned to knit five minutes ago and now want to be knitfluencers.
When I want a super simple technique tutorial, I usually end up looking at either Nimble Needles or VeryPink Knits. I find her super annoying, but her tutorials are spot-on. Norman's voice is much more soothing and I just enjoy his presence more, but both of them have good ultra close-up shots of what they're doing (which lots of vloggers don't because it requires special equipment).
I'd just figure out what kind of finished products you want to use knitting for and then find patterns and tutorials geared towards those.
Cables are relatively easy. Stranded colorwork requires a fair amount of physical coordination and some people find it rather difficult at first.
Circular needles are far more popular than traditional straight ones for people starting today.
Cotton yarn is relatively less nice to knit with than wool for most people, but it tends to be the natural fiber available at a low price point from major retailers.
Picking up general tips like that by watching various youtubers will help you pick a project that won't be too painful to work on.
People who naturally knit loosely should consider grippy bamboo or wooden needles. People who naturally knit tightly should consider slippery metal ones.
My biggest piece of advice is that you're usually better off with something "hard" that you actually like rather than a "practice" project you don't care about, at least after you've made like one rectangle to practice doing a knit stitch at all.
--
Finding community can be hard, and yes, some crafting hobbies are infested with drama.
But if you just want to know how to knit, you're way better off with some video tutorials and a nice pattern you like.

Now that Sunlit Gotham is done... What comes Next?
Here are quick little blurbs of each idea so you know what to vote for:
Direct Sequel to Sunlit Gotham - tackling the actual failing of the Mist, the fallout that it means for the myth communities, and the fact that there are now that mortals know they exist. There's a lot of political controversy (Kinda like the anti-meta fight all over again). Sky is gonna need to fight this on multiple levels, as the Spartan, but also as Skylar Richardson-Wayne, daughter of Bruce Wayne - who maybe has more sway on the political side of things. Not to mention school and being a teenager on top of it all :)
(more below the line break)
Skylar + Bobby in the Marvel Universe - Two options here, one focuses mainly on Sky starting with the original 2012 Avengers movie (will not stay canon to the MCU past a certain point) and the other focuses on both siblings and would put Sky at the same age as Peter Parker (definitely would not be canon to the MCU and would be more General Marvel Vibes from multiple variations)
Sky and Bobby in Transformers (Bayverse) Universe - Sky and Bobby are sent to visit their cousin - Sam Witwicky - and end up joining in on the race to find the Allspark
Various New OCs from various fandoms - I have a lot... it's maybe a problem
Completely Original Work - Leap of Faith - Roxanne Johnson is a freshman in high school who spends her time busy with cheerleading, martial arts, school, and friends. When her crush, Ellie, gets kidnapped by a rising crime organization she wants to help - how hard could it be to be a hero? Turns out it's a bit harder than she thought.
Have any other thoughts? Leave them in the comments!

Insta-thought heel! (Also known as “plain heel”)
I leaned this technique from this video by Roxanne Richardson, and it seemed like the best option to not interrupt the red/orange gradient of this yarn.
Essentially the same as an afterthought heel, but worked immediately as you go. When you get to where the heel should start, put half the stitches on a stitch-holder or waste yarn, and provisionally cast on that many stitches and re-join in the round. Then work the heel as normal for an afterthought heel. Next step is to pick out the the provisional cast-on and then resume working in the round to do the foot.
Just like an afterthought heel, works just as well for toe-up or cuff-down.

Xover Possibility: Scooby-Universal-Doo
This is a limited crossover series I'm now considering.
Scooby and the gang have teamed up with several celebrities and a few famous characters in taking down ghosts and solving mysteries under WB's commission, but let's see what happens if they end up in the Universal Pictures cyber universe and end up doing…well, pretty much the same formula, except with versions of the Universal animated characters.
Here are some possibilities I thought up.
Franchise: Despicable Me Characters teamed up with: Felonious Gru, Lucy Wilde, and three of the Minions Type of monster/ghost: Chronology: before Despicable Me 3 or Despicable Me 4 Guest Voices: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, and Pierre Coffin Chase scene song: "Chuck Berry" by Pharrell Williams (from Despicable Me 3)
Franchise: the Lorax Characters teamed up with: Ted Wiggins, Audrey, and the Lorax (whom Mystery Inc believes is a mascot) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Michael Cera, Ashleigh Ball, Danny DeVito and Chris Renaud Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: the Secret Life of Pets Characters teamed up with: Katie, Max, Duke, Gidget, and Snowball Type of monster/ghost: Note: The pets will be able to communicate thanks to a translation device Gru briefly lets the gang borrow Guest Voices: Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, a Kevin Hart soundalike, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, and Lori Alan Chase scene song:
Franchise: the Road to El Dorado Characters teamed up with: Modern-day lookalike descendants of Miguel, Tulio and Chel with the same names Type of monster/ghost: Stone Jaguar Guest Voices: Kevin Kline, a Kenneth Branagh soundalike, and Rosie Perez Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: Shrek/Puss in Boots Characters teamed up with: Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Wallace & Gromit Characters teamed up with: Wallace & Gromit Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: a UK rock band song
Franchise: Kung Fu Panda Characters teamed up with: "furry cosplayers" Po and the Furious Five (minus Mantis) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jack Black, Kari Wahlgren, David Cross, Lucy Liu, and a Jackie Chan soundalike Chase scene song: Dumpling Warrior Remix (instrumental) from Kung Fu Panda 2
Franchise: Megamind Characters teamed up with: Megamind, Minion, and Roxanne Ritchi Type of monster/ghost: Note: Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and its TV series would be ignored Guest Voices: Keith Ferguson, David Cross, and Tina Fey Chase scene song: "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osborne
Franchise: Mr. Peabody & Sherman Characters teamed up with: Who else? Mr. Peabody and Sherman Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Chris Parnell and a male child actor Chase scene song: "Way Back When" by Grizzfolk
Franchise: Rocky & Bullwinkle Characters teamed up with: Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Kath Soucie, Tom Kenny, and any voice from the 2018 cartoon Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Captain Underpants Characters teamed up with: George Beard, Harold Hutchins, and a reluctant Benjamin Krupp/Captain Underpants Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jay Gragnani, Ramone Hamilton, Jorge Diaz, and either Nat Faxon or Ed Helms Chase scene song: "Captain Underpants" by Weird Al Yankovic
Franchise: the Bad Guys Characters teamed up with: the Bad Guys Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Alex Borstein, and Lily Singh Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Ruby Gillman Characters teamed up with: Ruby and Agatha Gillman Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Colman Domingo, Sam Richardson, Blue Chapman, Jaboukie White-Young, and Will Forte Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: Mario Characters teamed up with: Mario and Luigi Type of monster/ghost: Bowser Koopa Guest Voices: Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Jessica Diciccio, and Sebastian Maniscalo Chase scene song: Mario video game music
Franchise: Curious George Characters teamed up with: Curious George and Ted the Man in the Yellow Hat Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jeff Bennett, Bill Chott, and Rolonda Watts Chase scene song: n/a
I'm not absolutely certain I'll do this, as I'm already committed to other things. In fact, I might give this series idea to someone more qualified to write crossover mysteries. But still, if anyone would like to suggest types of monsters or ghosts Mystery Inc and their new co-detectives would be facing, I could try to think of the episode plots for them. Also, don't suggest the villains' identities unless through private note, otherwise it would kill the mystery.

I'm curious, would these victorian patterns also include gauge the way modern patterns do (as in number of stitches per inch in stockinette), or something similar? Or did you just have to hope your gauge was the same as the pattern maker's and hope for the best?
I have never seen a Victorian knitting manual say anything about a gauge swatch. I don’t think the concept had come to be yet. The most that early writers of knitting manuals have to say about the matter is that a knitter should be careful to knit neither too loose nor too tight, but to keep a medium tension.
A YouTube video by Roxanne Richardson describes her attempting to take on a late 19th-century stocking pattern, only to become confused when the number of stitches and rows given for each part of the stocking produced something that didn't fit her foot. She eventually discovered that these patterns were probably distilled from 16th-century stocking-making philosophy that laid out what proportions a stocking should be knit to based on some kind of ideal (e.g. the circumference of the thigh is equal to 1 1/3 the length of the foot, the circumference around the ankle is the same as the circumference at the ball of the foot, &c.). The Victorian pattern used these same imagined proportions across all of the sizes that it gave instructions for, but provided no insight on how to alter the pattern if your body differed from them. She says "they'll tell you how many to cast on, how many rounds to work straight, how many decreases to work over how many rounds [...]. They never tell you what the gauge is! Stitch gauge or row gauge. So you don't know what size this stocking is." (time stamp 26:48)
More information than you asked for:
The thing about these manuals is that some of them claim to be able to teach someone to knit from scratch, but they’re nigh incomprehensible unless (and often even if) you have a good deal of experience knitting. There are a lot of things that aren’t specified (e.g. the text says “repeat”—but from where? Or the stitch repeat is clear, but it doesn't go evenly into the number of stitches you have. Or the pattern just sort of... ends before the garment is finished), and there are a lot of errata. In many places, you need to be able to figure out what something should look like from the name or description of the stitch, or from knowing what the garment the pattern is for is shaped like, and then figure out the appropriate actions to take to bring that to fruition.
There was also no language of the type used in patterns today, which ime is almost entirely standardised (knit, purl/pearl, K2Tog, Sl1-K1-PSSO, &c.). Patterns were often rendered entirely in longhand prose. Writers generally used “plain” or “knit” for what we would call a knit stitch, and “turned” (n. “turn stitch” or “turned stitch”; v. “turn a stitch”) or “back stitch” or “pearl stitch” for what we would call a pearl stitch. Usually K2Tog and P2Tog are rendered “knit two stitches / loops together” or “take two together,” and “knit two stitches together in turn stitch” or “turn two together,” respectively. Yarning over is generally “make a stitch” or "make a loop." Past this, there is almost no consensus on terminology.
Writers generally got around how long and unwieldy a pattern would be if complex stitches needed to be described anew each time they appeared by creating an index, which gave a brief phrase (or a symbol!!) followed by a description of how to perform that stitch or series of stitches. A lot of these can be ‘translated’ pretty 1:1 with modern stitch notation; others I had never seen called for.
Tumblr media
[Jane Gaugain, The lady's assistant. Index shewing symbols such as "O," "O sub B," "S sub upside-down F" etc. and explaining each with a sentence or a few words of instruction.]
One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that some writers will describe a sequence of actions taken, whereas modern notation prefers to notate stitches created. The Winchester Fancy Needlework Instructor, for example, often tells you to bring the yarn forward and then knit the next stitch, which pair of actions will do of course create what we would call a yarn over; a modern pattern would tend to just say “YO” and expect you to know which actions to perform to create that YO based on what kind of stitch the previous and next stitches are (yarn forward if between two K stitches, yarn around if between two P stitches, yarn, yarn backwards if between a P and a K stitch &c.). As a consequence, these knitting manuals often have separate index entries or symbols for each of these actions (as above), though we would consider them to create the same ‘type’ of stitch.
Sometimes a writer seems to have simply messed up and included a phrase in a pattern that was not descried in the index (Workwoman's Guide—otherwise one of the clearer ones out there—asks me to "Put the needle into two stitches, and knit them backwards." Does this mean to purl them? K2Tog tbl?). No other instance of the word "backwards" appears in the book. The author also wrote a pattern that calls for a stitch that was not mentioned in the "stitches" section—it instructs me to
Set on an even number of stitches, Knit the second row in the Hole-stitch, the next row in Turn-stitch, and so on.
But nothing in the book has been described as "hole-stitch." So you have to look for other patterns that use this stitch, ask yourself what it makes sense for these garments to look like, assume what this might look like from the name (it has. holes in it?) and guess what you're supposed to do to make that happen (perhaps a plain open stitch alternating YO and K2Tog), hunt for engravings illustrating an object intended to be made with this stitch, &c. Or maybe on the description of another stitch (the embossed diamond from this same volume!) the instructions on how to repeat the pattern create completely senseless results, so you have to use the first few correct rows + an assumption about what the stitch should look like (you know.... like diamonds...) to figure out how the rest should go.
So, yeah. Tackling Victorian knitting patterns. Not for the faint of heart.

I was originally going to try and find a template of this that was structured a bit more like a tier list, but I found this first and decided to use it. This is introducing my 8 main characters for a book I'm working on, all of them based off of different high school "cliques" (kinda've, I did deviate from this concept for some of them).
Top Row, Left Column: Cassie Richardson (The "Nerdy Geek") Top Row, Middle Column: Lacey King (The "Depressed Emo") Top Row, Right Column: Allie Gomez (The "Artistic Creator") Middle Row, Left Column: Nia Taylor (The "Normal One") Middle Row, Middle Column: N/A Middle Row, Right Column: Jasmine Haynes (The "Slacking Stoner") Bottom Row, Left Column: Roxanne Sullivan (The "Athletic Jock") Bottom Row, Middle Column: Katy Camarilla (The "Cool Kid") Bottom Row, Right Column: Samantha Owen (The "Goth Chick")
