I am tempted to label this one cute just to fool some unsuspecting viewers but no, this can’t really be called cute but it certainly is interesting. This is a #repost from @mbari_news via @PhotoAroundApp With a face only another blob sculpin could love, this Psychrolutes phrictus swam up to take a look at the camera on MBARI's remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts. As it gets closer to the camera, the red dot you see is one of two lasers mounted on the camera housing used to measure animals on the seafloor. You can also see numerous marine leeches attached to its head!⠀ ⠀ Blob sculpin grow to about 60 cm (2 feet) long and are shaped like large, flabby tadpoles. They eat crabs, sea pens, and other small animals that live on the seafloor. ⠀ ⠀ #faceonlyamothercouldlove #blobsculpin #deepseafish #fish #uglyface #weirdfish #deepsea #MBARI #ocean #oceanlife #sealife #deepsealife #ROV #Underwatervideo #ROVvideo #wildlifevideo #Nature #weirdnature #LookAtThatFace

This small and delicate jelly is one of the most beautiful in the deep sea. Its name, Crossota millsae is in honor of jelly biologist Dr. Claudia Mills from Friday Harbor Laboratories. Using ROVs, MBARI researchers have observed these jellies in depths as great as 3700 meters. . They reproduce sexually and brood baby medusae attached to the gastric canals under the umbrella. Unlike most hydromedusae, none of the species of Crossota have a sessile stage. Instead, spend their entire lives in the water column as plankton. ⠀ . In my dirty mind, I’m seeing something else. 😎🦑 #Repost @mbari_news (@get_repost) ・・・ Recent research efforts by MBARI scientists have advanced our understanding of the feeding relationships within open ocean food webs by carefully detailing who eats whom. Studying the diets of deep-sea animals is a formidable challenge. The scientists analyzed 27-years of video footage collected by deep-diving, remotely operated submersibles. Results reveal a food web that is far more complex than previously known, with a dynamic assemblage of jellies, squids, fishes, worms, and crustaceans feeding on one another in a variety of permutations, to sustain life in the deep sea. Gathering this type of information is a necessary step towards conservation of ocean species and ecosystems. ⠀ ⠀ This black-eyed squid, Gonatus onyx, has quite a mouthful with this struggling bigscale fish (Melamphaidae). This is but one of the many interactions of animals eating that our ROVs have observed over the years exploring the deep sea.⠀ ⠀ Learn more about this research on our website (link in bio).⠀ ⠀ #MBARI #foodwebs #deepsea #midwater #squid #bigscale #deepseafish #deepseasquid #cephalopod #whoseatingwhom #deepsealife #ocean #oceanlife #sealife #ecology #deepseaecology #deepseabiology #ROV #ROVvideo #underwatervideo #wildlife #nature #Whoeatswho #foodweb #marinebiology #wildlife_seekers

A deep-sea ghost shark has been filmed alive in ocean for first time. The way it moves is so mesmerizing | Repost: @mbari_news | Our video of this ghost shark has been making quite a splash on the internet! Scientists call this unusual fish Hydrolagus trolli, but its common name is the pointy-nosed blue chimaera. First named in 2002, it is known to live in deep waters around Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. But until a recent publication by scientist from @mlmlmarinesci and MBARI, it had not been officially identified anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Chimaeras are unusual fishes and with common names like ghost sharks, rabbitfishes, and ratfishes, rare encounters with them are a reminder of how little most people know about life in the deep sea. Like sharks, their bodies are not stiffened by bones, but by plates and bone-like bits of cartilage. Like the chimaera from Greek mythology, which had a goat’s head, a serpent’s tail, and a lion’s head, chimaeras are pretty weird looking. Watch the entire video on our YouTube channel! #ghostshark #mbari #mlml #MBARI #chimaera #ratfish #hydrolagus #hydrolagustrolli #deepseafish #deepsealife #ocean #oceanlife #marinebiology #gulfofcalifornia #seaofcortez #weirdfish #underwatervideo #ROV #rovvideo #endextinction #wildlifeconservation #conservation #biologist #wildlifebiologist #marinebiologist #wildlife #sea #discovery #KeyConservation

This is a #Repost from @mbari_news who is presenting red ocean life forms in the deep sea・・・ Reflections on red in the deep sea ❤️🌊💗🌊❤️ ⠀ The velvety red of a drifting jelly, the brick red of a flapjack octopus...many deep-sea creatures exhibit the colors of Valentine's Day. When pursuing the prey object of their desire, deep-sea creatures may use red as camouflage. Wavelengths of light in the red end of the visible spectrum are preferentially absorbed by seawater, and therefore red colors appear black in the deep sea. Red animals disappear into the darkness, enabling them to ambush unsuspecting prey or avoid a hungry predator.⠀ ⠀ In the video: Midwater jelly (Pandea rubra), deep-sea jelly (Voragonema sp.), cydippid comb jelly (Aulacoctena sp.), flapjack octopus (Opisthoteuthis sp.), brisingid sea star.⠀ ⠀ #DeepSeaValentine #DeepSea #deepsealife #MBARI #underwatervideo #ROV #ROVvideo #oceanlife #ocean #ourocean #loveourocean #ValentinesDay #ValentinesDay2018 #jellyfish #reflectionsonred #red #camouflage #ecology #marinebiology #deepseaadaptation #octopus #jellyfish #combjelly #starfish #OceanLifeForms #DeepSeaCreatures

Freaky, Swimming, Undersea Life or Feather Star Undersea Ballet? You Decide **************************************** This is a #repost from @mbari_news via @PhotoAroundApp Have you ever seen a deep-sea feather star swim? Crinoids, commonly known as feather stars, are relatives to the sea star. Unlike most sea stars, they feed by holding their arms out into the water current, catching food by branches, called pinnules, on their arms. Then they move the food to their mouth in the center. Here the feather star is using its feathery arms, to swim upwards. Hanging below its arms are appendages known as cirri that help the feather star cling to rocks, sponges, and coral.⠀ ⠀ #featherstar #crinoid #deepsea #deepsealife #ocean #oceanlife #sealife #MBARI #undewatervideo #MontereyBay #MontereyCanyon #echinoderm #swimming #dothelocomotion #ROV #ROVvideo #blueplanet2 #DeepOceanLife #FreakyLifeUnderTheSea #FeatherStarBallet
