You try not to act on your instincts. It's best. For everyone. For Leo. Yourself too, you suppose.

You've taught yourself to stay in control. Make what is abnormal normal once again. It's uncomfortable at times, when you feel that call, that urge crawling through your skin. Swimming through your mind.

Leo's almost always there, though. To hold you. Or wipe your tears. The timber of his voice late at night, its' vibrations soothing your tainted soul.

It's hardest when he leaves.

Like tonight. Those dreaded supply runs where you're left for hours. Waiting for your Leo to return.

You study him from your position on the floor, yellowed eyes watching his every movement as he readies himself to venture into the cold winter night.

"Don't go..." muttered mainly to yourself, but said loud enough that Leo catches it. It was hard to keep it in, that overwhelming need to have him near. At least within view, within reach.

He approaches, kneeling down. "Only a few hours," he reaches behind your ear, leaving soft scritches. His smile grows at your content, purr-like sounds. "Be back before you know it."

You pout. No. Why does he have to go? Can't he just stay like this? Lulling you into a peaceful sleep with his delicate touches?

He strokes your hair, pressing a tender kiss to your forehead. His way of saying goodbye, and promising he'd be back for you.

It feels empty; cold once he's gone. It always did. You've tried to go along, but he always insisted that you stay. To keep you safe. To make sure they don't get anywhere near you again.

You understood as much as you could. But.. what about him? What if he wasn't safe? Imagining your Leo in danger.. you tried not to for long. Because, well, the instincts.

You wake abruptly from a light slumber to a smell. A disgusting, putrid almost nauseating scent.

You're getting closer, almost there when suddenly something speaks to you. Familiar... and just like you. The Hive.

A/N: I've been dealing with a lot of hand pain and migraines so I apologize for disappearing.

As you settle into Donnie's lap, he continues his work, the soft churrs from his chest creating a soothing backdrop. He occasionally nuzzles against your neck, a rare display of affection. Normally, he avoids close contact, but during brumation, he craves the comfort you provide. The heat radiating from you and the gentle weight of your presence seem to lull him into a peaceful state, keeping him warm and relaxed.

Despite his condition, he was determined to keep pushing through his work. His instincts drove him to finish his projects, regardless of how fatigued and sluggish he felt. However, it was clear that he couldn't maintain this pace indefinitely, so you made every effort to support Donnie as he labored on, until he eventually reached his limit and collapsed into bed.

A few hours into this, Donnie emits a weary groan. His eyes begin to droop, blinking slowly as he sinks back into his chair. Gradually, he stands up, cradling you in his arms, your legs having long since gone numb.

He scoops you up and brings you to bed, lying back with you nestled on him. His churring grows louder, and soon his eyes begin to close. "'So warm..." He pulls you in tight, emitting soft, comforting chuffs.

"Anything for you, Don." You plant gentle kisses on his plastron, feeling the delightful vibrations of his churrs resonate against your lips. He responds with even louder churrs, giving you in a tender squeeze.

With a gentle motion, Donnie shifts you onto your side, wrapping himself around you to capture the warmth. He presses his face into your neck, releasing a blissful sigh. "Should've done sooner..."

"I tried telling you..." You playfully tease, your fingers gliding gently along his arms, offering a soothing touch.

"Jus for that... You're stuck 'ere..." He emits a soft grunt, tightening his embrace around your waist. A playful, sleepy growl escapes him as he buries his beak into the side of your neck.

It’s not some emotional revelation, it’s like he’s connecting the dots in his head. Suddenly, all the strange emotions, the extra care, and the need to protect them make sense

He’s in love

Donnie’s first reaction is denial ( poor dude )

Love is illogical and distracting, so he tries to suppress the feelings, telling himself that he’s too focused on his work to be involved in something so irrational

His brothers, especially Raph, pick up on it immediately

He try to encourage him to open up, but Donnie insists that love is for "less complex minds"

Despite this, he can’t help but feel a tug of emotion every time they smile at him or show appreciation for his inventions

Leo is a very over dramatic jump to conclusions type bf so the mere SECOND your distant for 12 hours he will think you hate him.

Now let's go back a bit. Back when you and Leo first started dating you were going through a rough patch and Leo always knew how to cheer you up in your darkest days. He always gave you the attention you though you didn't deserve and he lifted your spirit as a person. You felt forever indebted to him the way he treats you like his princess. And you've loved him ever since.

With Leo your life got fixed and it felt way more better and freeing (minus the acasional kidnapping from a villian but that's like every 2 weeks now). You has more energy and you genuinely felt happier with Leo as your boyfriend. Therefore you decided after a year or more you wanted to officially tie the note. With Leo.

Never thought I'd see that day coming

But you were nervous. I mean Leo is the type to not even be bound to labels and what if he feels like marriage isn't meant for him?? I mean it's a big step of commitment and no offense on him but the only thing he ever committed on in like (or than your relationship) was the tela Novela he has been watching since he was a baby.

But you pushed aside your doubts and decided to go for it. However due to him being a turtle mutant obviously it would be hard to find a ring that will fit or a jewelry shop that won't question. So you started skipping you hangouts with him on the account of your searching far and wide.

Leo was DISTRAUGHT! I mean the love of his life, his soul, his trust, his sun and his vida had betrayed him by canceling on him MORE THAN ONCE! I mean just say you hate him.

So one day, when you had finally gotten the ring but decided to wait till you had a plan on how you were gonna ask him, he decided he would confront you.

After a very very tight hug and a tender kiss you two laugh at how stupid Leo had been. He couldn't believe that you actually asked him to marry you before he could mostly. But in the end he was just glad you hadn't actually cheated on him.

This is Dontron we are talking about HOW can you possibly keep a secret from him at all. He can hack into anything including your search history or track your phone to see where you go if it's really really important. HOW could you possibly pull this off? Easy. Ask a friend in a sound proof room with no electronics in it.

So you had done just that. Your friend being the kind and generous soul they were decided to help you. So every So often they would come back to you will research they had gathered on rings and sizes and stuff. And you almost got busted one time by him.

"Why were you measuring me in the middle of the night during out sleep over last Tuesday? Specially at 3:45."

"I had a hubba Bubba gum string and wanted to see how many I can wrap around you to make you a giant bubble gum mummy."

"You know you could have just asked me to calculate that instead of just doing it at 3am?"

"Whats the fun in that?"

Not only did you lie out your ass but you made it damn good realistic ish. And he believed it. Mostly because he was half playing a game on his phone but you still managed to get past the Donnie lie detectors.

But ofcourse since he is a mutant with strange hands it was getting harder and harder to find a ring for him. So you had to meet up with your friend more than preferred. And enough that Donnie notices.

First thing he does? Detective research. He searches at where you go to and finds out You've been going your friends house alot more than normal. Especially since you two only ever talk in your friends sound proof studio room. So he can't hear shit because his sound proof breaker had been borrowed and broken by Leo the other week so he was left up to his genius imagination.

So once you got the ring you visited him very veery happy because you wanted to get the lies out of the way immediately knowing Donnie would find out in a matter of time.

"Heyyy Dontron."

"Greetings my not so lovely s/o"

You see raph is clueless when it comes to things so hiding a secret proposal from him was pretty easy. You know what wasn't easy? Finding a fitting ring for his big mutated turtle finger. It was HARD. Anything that was close to the side was sold out for inappropriate use. And the rest were WAY out of your price range so you were running a bit low on chance.

So you decided on one however you had no money for it so he took the initiative to bust your ass till you finally got enough for it. You worked day in and day out, taking longer shifts, you did some side gigs and did weekend jobs. You were working and working on the clock that you accidentally forgot your darling boyfriend Raph.

He had been noticing you had been not really cold but more exhausted and closed off. You seem to be tired and you barely ever have time for him which hurts alot if he's honest. Your always busy even in the late hours for work but he knows for a fact that you never work that late. So he began to get paranoid. Especially since he wanted to surprise you with something special he knew you would have liked.

So after weeks of miscommunication and work you finally had enough and more for the ring for Raph. So you decided to treat him to a rooftop picnic as an apology. He accepted it ofcourse and you two just sat on a random apartment building just star gazing and eating pizza. That's when you released his arm from your shoulder and stepped back making him look at you in confusion.

You step back and get on one knee bringing his ring from behind your back.

"Raph I have a very imp-"

"WAIT! Before you do there something you should know."

He shyly pulls out a gorgeous ring for you. Oh my god he was going to propose to you aswell.

"Oh raph...you shouldn't have."

"Uh Raph has been planing this for a while but everytime Raph gets a bit nervous."

"I'm sure you have nothing to worry about now because I guess we both accept. So Raph will you marry me?"

This poor baby boy is easy to hid things from. Like you could hid a rubber duck from him just by putting it on his head and he wouldn't know a thing. So when you decide to marry him because he had always been there for you. He was the reason you woke up every morning a trudged through the stinky sewer. It was all just to see him face lighten up with joy whenever he spotted you.

So you immediately thought of marrying him after 2 years of bliss. And so due to him kor being a human it took you quite a while. But due to his cluelessness you don't really try that hard to hide it. You just research when your in your house.

However it took you longer than you liked to find not only the perfect size but also the perfect design for your artist boyfriend. So you searched far and wider you took trains after trains to travel to different jewelry stores to find the perfect ring for Mikey because he deserves a proper ring.

However against your better judgement you had no choice but to put your focus on the ring rather than your Mikey. And although he might not be that good at catching onto things he would notice your not as close with him as you were. And it just made him sad that he thought his favorite person hated him.

So one day as you two finally get some alone time as he is painting a wall you decided now is the perfect chance to do it cause you hated lying to Mikey even if it was easy to get away with.

So as he had his back turned, you had gotten on one knee and held his ring out.

"You think that dot of red- OH MY GOSH!!"

"Michelangelo Hamato will you-"

"YES YES YES YES A MILLIONS TIMES YES!!!!"

"I didn't even-"

You were engulfed in a suffocating hug but honestly you didn't care as you hugged back your now fiancé.

Donatello had never sweated so much in his life.

And technically, turtles didn’t even sweat.

But as he adjusted the third string of dollar-store fairy lights (rigged to a janky power converter he swore wouldn’t explode this time), he was dangerously close to short-circuiting himself. Emotionally, at least.

Everything had to be perfect.

Well—as perfect as it could be when your first official date with your crush took place in an underground sewer lair.

But still. He tried.

He’d spent the last four days meticulously planning: lighting, music, “ambiance.” He even tried making a “fancy” dinner—homemade pizza with toppings that sounded gourmet (fresh basil, sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese… okay, the cheese was questionable, but he tried). Mikey had offered to help, which he swiftly declined. That boy couldn’t even say “romantic” without breaking into a slow jam.

Donnie glanced at the table he’d set up—well, two stacked crates with a patterned cloth April had donated—and nodded to himself. Good. Cute, even.

Now all he had to do was—

“Donnie?”

Your voice echoed lightly from down the tunnel, and he froze. Panic. Actual panic.

He rushed toward the entry, slipping on a wrench, nearly tripping over a power cord, and still somehow greeted you with a strained, “Hey! Hi! You made it!”

You raised an eyebrow at the flurry of movement. “Everything okay?”

“Yes! Yes. Just final touches. Nothing exploded.” He cleared his throat. “Yet.”

You grinned and looked past him, eyes widening at the sight.

“Oh my god…”

His stomach dropped. “Too much?”

“No,” you said, smile blooming like sun through cloud. “It’s adorable.”

You stepped into the little setup, taking it all in: the soft fairy lights strung between old pipes, the flickering candles (he had triple-checked for open flame hazards), the folded napkins that looked suspiciously like they were made from Splinter’s spare meditation towels. And the pizza—slightly overdone, artfully arranged with what looked like… a parsley garnish?

Donnie wrung his hands. “I wanted to make it special. For you. I know it’s not exactly… rooftop dining.”

You turned toward him, and your expression softened into something so warm, he thought he might short out completely.

“I love it.”

He blinked. “You do?”

“Donnie,” you said, stepping closer, “you strung fairy lights over sewage pipes. That’s effort. And it’s very you.”

He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“You should.”

You sat, and he joined you—awkwardly, knees up too high because the crates weren’t made for his build—but you didn’t seem to care. You chatted as you ate, complimenting the pizza (which honestly wasn’t bad), and Donnie slowly relaxed. His jokes got bolder, your laughter louder, and somewhere between a half-hearted toast with soda cans and a rambling story about the time Raph accidentally set the punching bag on fire, he felt it—

That thing. That maybe-this-is-actually-going-well thing.

And then—

BOOM

The lights went out.

Dead.

Complete darkness.

“…Oh, come on,” Donnie groaned, leaping up.

You stifled a laugh as you heard him fumbling with wires and muttering to himself.

“Give me a sec! I just need to reset the backup capacitor!”

“Take your time. I’m just here enjoying the ambiance,” you said, waving vaguely into the void.

Somewhere, a wire sparked.

And then—

BOOM.

Loud music blasted through the tunnels—loud, cheesy, and undeniably Mikey.

“YO, IT’S DATE NIGHT, BABY!” Mikey’s voice rang out as he slid into the room, wearing a velvet jacket, heart-shaped sunglasses, and carrying a boombox blasting “Let’s Get It On.”

Donnie froze mid-repair. “MIKEY—”

“I brought the vibe, bro!” Mikey declared, already moonwalking. “Your love life needs a soundtrack!”

“ You swore you wouldn’t interrupt!”

Mikey winked. “Technically, I’m enhancing.”

From somewhere deep in the lair, Leo’s voice echoed in the distance like thunder.

“Michaelangelo I SWEAR TO SPLINTER-”

“Can’t hear you, bro! Love is louder than rules!”

You were doubled over laughing, covering your face while Donnie looked like he was deciding between rage and resignation.

Eventually, Leo stormed into the room, glared at Mikey, and yanked the power cord. Silence.

Leo pointed at Donnie, then you. “Sorry. Carry on. Pretend this never happened.”

He dragged Mikey away by the shell as Mikey yelled, “BUT I WAS GONNA DANCE WITH THE MOP AGAIN!”

Donnie slumped onto the crate next to you, face in his hands. “This is a disaster.”

You nudged his arm. “This is hilarious.”

Silence returned. Flickering emergency lights buzzed overhead, casting a warm orange glow.

Donnie exhaled hard and slumped back onto his crate.

“I’m so sorry,” he muttered. “This was supposed to be—cool. Smooth. Romantic.”

“It was,” you said.

He glanced at you.

You were still smiling, soft and amused.

“This is… all so you, Donnie. Smart and sweet and a little chaotic. And that’s exactly why I like it.”

He stared at you, heart thudding.

You reached for his hand—large, calloused, still trembling from stress—and squeezed gently.

“I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

His breath caught. He ducked his head, cheeks flushed.

“I really like you,” he said, voice low. “I’ve liked you for a while. But I didn’t think someone like you would ever want to come down here. Let alone eat sewer pizza with me.”

You smiled. “Donnie… I’m here because it’s you. And you didn’t have to do all this to impress me.”

He blinked. “Really?”

“Really. But… I’m still gonna brag about the candlelit sewer date to April.”

He laughed—sharp and sudden and so real it made your chest ache a little.

Then, slowly, he leaned in. Not a kiss. Just resting his forehead gently against yours. His free hand came up, brushing his knuckles along your cheek.

“You make all of this feel… okay,” he whispered.

You smiled and leaned into his touch.

“So do you.”

And in the soft hum of faulty lights, surrounded by chaos and candles and leftover jazz still buzzing faintly through the walls, Donnie kissed your cheek—shy, careful, reverent.

It was imperfect.

And completely perfect.

The Lab is quiet, soft ambiance usually enough to soothe your mind.

But on the days where it’s not? The days where it feels as if everyone is out to get you? Donatello will just scoop you up, moving you to sit on his lap as he works.

“Sorry, I, I know I should have asked.”

“No, it’s fine… you feel safe.”

“…You feel safe too.”

The soft clicking of keys on his keyboard as he’s typing, the slight movement of one hand up and down your back. It feels nice. It feels like a warm blanket, your safety net to fall back on.

The different plants in the corner of the lab mellow out the smell of old coffee. A recognisable smell, one you’ve grown accustomed to. It’s so familiar that just the scent alone relaxes your body now.

Quiet beeps and chirps come through the lab, melting into white noise. You can see blue light reflecting in his glasses from the corner of your eye.

He’s so quiet and gentle with you when you need it, perhaps after an anxiety attack he wasn’t there for, or when he can sense one coming on. If he finds you curled up in a dark corner, away from the people and the noise, his eyes will soften, carefully moving closer to sit next to you.

“Have you been crying?”

“Do you wanna talk about it?”

A warm, comforting, soft hug. It feels like returning home after a hard day, you really should ask for more of these. Kisses lightly peppered all over your face just to elicit a giggle out of you.

You guys can stay together away from the people all day if you want.

He has blanket forts set up in his room, an absurd amount of them. You can stay there on bad days when all feels lost, watching him draw in his sketchbook. The soothing sound of pencil over paper and indecipherable murmuring enough to send you to sleep.
