Daemon AU Drabbles - Part 1

(name will be edited in the future lmao)

Daemons are physical manifestations of a person's soul in animal form. In this AU all the turtles in all the different itterations have daemons, a testiment to them having souls.

This drabble is set in the 2018/rottmnt series.

[POV] Donnie and his daemon Sōsei “Sosshi" = unsettled

April and her daemon Cairn = unsettled

Leo and his daemon Ren = unsettled

Donnie had never felt so small.

The city seemed enormous, towering above him, all unfamiliar dark structures. Sosshi was currently a chubby sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus), perched on his shoulder, wings slightly open in a nervous flutter, trying to comfort him. But as hard as Sosshi tried, Donnie couldn’t stop the deep pit in his stomach, telling him that they’d made a huge mistake.

They shouldn’t have left the sewers. Papa had always told them not to leave the sewers! And what did they do? Stupid Leo!

He whipped his head around as the sudden sound of footsteps reached him. Stumbling he tried to melt into the shadows, his breathing picking up as he prayed whoever it was wouldn’t notice the green skin… or the scales….

“Ren?” he whispered in his mind, reaching out for some sense of connection as he backed up deeper into the alleyway, his large eyes wide as he took in the flickering lights that had him avoiding the glow lest he be seen. But just then, he heard a soft voice calling out.

“Hey, are you lost?”

Donnie froze, and so did Sosshi, turning promptly into a mouse to hide under Donnie’s hoodie. Something Donnie wished he could do himself. How could he be such a dummy to get caught?

In front of them was a girl about his age with thick black hair spilling over the sides of her face, looking at him with wide eyes — not of fear, but of curiosity and concern. By her side padded a cat daemon; an ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), sleek and watchful. Her daemon’s golden eyes met Donnie’s with a gaze as gentle as it was sharp. He flinched back and averted his gaze. It wasn’t respectful.

As he hunched over, making himself smaller subconsciously, the girl’s daemon shifted into a long-legged hound that Donnie couldn’t identify, ears flicking in an expression of curiosity.

Donnie’s heart pounded. He hadn’t thought about what he’d do if he got caught, and now he wasn’t sure if he could even find his voice to answer her. Sosshi shifted slightly on his shoulder, curling his long tail around his neck. He nodded, glancing down shyly as he did.

The girl’s expression softened further. She crouched down, making herself smaller to meet his gaze. “My name’s April,” she introduced herself, she was a bit too loud and a bit too bubbly in the same way that Mikey was. Her daemon sat beside her, “this is Cairn. We’re just out here getting some fresh air... well, kind of. I noticed you… and you seemed like you needed an adult or something.”

Adults were the exact opposite of what Donnie needed, so he shook his head violently. He was not about to be kidnapped and/or experimented on!

“Okay! I wont get my mum if you don’t want me too,” April agreed, raising her hands in the universal peace sign, “…what’s your name?”

He would answer, that would be the proper and polite thing to do… but he had never met a human, and he really didn’t think he could talk right now, his throat was all clogged with uncomfortable emotions.

“Can you talk?”

Donnie shook his head.

“Okay. That’s fine… do you need help?”

Donnie nodded.

“How- um… can I help you find your parents?” she – April, April, April the kind human – asked instead, watching him closely.

He nodded, clutching his daemon, who had now shifted into a small ferret that curled into his arms. She smiled.

“Okay,” April said, her voice resolute, and for a moment she looked a bit like Raph. “Then let’s find your parents together, alright? I promise I’ll get you back safe.”

Donnie looked at her with wide eyes, he could hear Sosshi encouraging him mentally, and so he decided to take the chance. He was a great judge of character after all. Slowly, he took a hesitant step forward. April took that as a good sign and gave him a big, encouraging smile.

He didn’t take the hand she offered but she didn’t take offence either, so he figured they were okay as she directed him towards a park. He pulled his hoodie tighter over his head, before realising his hands were visible and shoving them in his pockets. He wasn’t sure why the other humans weren’t reacting at the sight of an alien creature in their city, but no one cast them so much as a second look. He figured it might be something to do with the clearly human girl walking beside him and chatting at him.

She was nice chatting at him. It gave him then opportunity to focus on her and less on the loud bustling environment. It was kind of like what Leo did when Donnie got too tired of talking but didn’t want to be alone; except Leo talked about Lou Jitsu and not much else, whereas April talked about her mum.

They got to the park with little fanfare. It was nice. Donnie liked April. Maybe he could bring her home… but then she would probably be sad away from her mother, as she clearly loved her mother… maybe he could bring her mother home too, if she was half as kind as April was.

After a few more steps, Donnie felt a familiar presence and a blue blur crashed into him. He startled so hard he yelped aloud.

“Donnie!” Ren screeched, his form a large blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) as he fluttered around Donnie, chattering in the parrot-speech he loved rather than the normal way that daemons talked.

“Donnie?” April exclaimed, and Donnie turned towards her. It was quiet where they were, at the outskirts of the park she had mentioned, and no one was particularly looking at them, but it was still too exposed. He made a split-second decision and grabbed her hand, squashing down the immediate urge to recoil and he had no clue where her hands had been that day, and dragged her towards the shade of some trees. A slight bit more secluded.

A familiar voice cried out as Ren became the one of two blue blurs that crash-landed into him that day.

“Donnie! Where were you? You can’t just vanish!” Leo borderline shouted, shaking him slightly to punctuate his point. Then Leo peered an overly dramatic eye at April, “who’s this?” he demanded, a fierce glare on his face that was less intimidating than he thought it was.

April raised her hands in the same peaceful gesture she had with Donnie. “Hey, relax! I was just helping him find his parents… or I guess his brother,” she said, unfazed by Leo’s intensity. Cairn shifted into a classic-looking European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), giving Ren a reassuring look as the bird fluttered onto Leo’s shoulder.

“He looked lost.”

Leo narrowed his eyes again, humming loudly like some cartoon character, and made a vague attempt to push Donnie behind him, so of course Donnie resisted, and of course Leo aborted the attempt. Because Donnie was better than him.

“You’re a human.” Leo stated. The observational skills on this one…

“Yes?” April drew out crossing her arms like she was unimpressed, “and I assume you aren’t?”

“Exactly!” Leo pointed at her, and Donnie knew that pointing was rude because Papa had said it was just last week! He elbowed Leo, who shook him off and continued questioning in quick succession, “you aren’t scared of us? You aren’t disgusted? Why are you helping us?”

Both April and her daemon blinked shifting back a bit before replying. “You’re people though?”

“But,” Leo began, sounding a little lost, “how can you tell? How can you know?”

“You have daemons, anyone who has a daemon is a person. Even little kids know that!” The older girl explained, as if she knew all the secrets of the universe, the same assurance that Lou Jitsu had in his movies.

Leo hesitated, momentarily thrown off by her words. And Donnie knew he hadn’t expected her to understand, let alone accept them as “people”, because Donnie hadn’t expected it either. After a moment, he managed a nod, his suspicion softening into something closer to gratitude. He tugged Donnie over protectively but gave her a small nod.

Donnie, who was totally not clinging to his brother, turned back to April, who gave him a soft smile. With a shy, grateful wave, he watched her grin and wave back.

“See you again sometime Donnie?”

In response he raised his fist and shook it, nodding along with the sign.

“He’s saying of course you will,” Leo translated, and April grinned wide, her daemon shifting promptly into a playful looking tabby cat (Felis catus).

Made when Donnie was 23, he was trying to make a weapon to defeat the kraang but got a kid instead.

Got sent back in time with Casey to stop the apocalypse at age 17.

He got the scar on his face while attempting to make a kraang infection cure. He had his gear on but the reaction was delayed so once he took off his gear and banged his fist on the table it exploded. This happened at 16 years old, Leo was there, he flipped out.

Donnson’s kraang DNA slowly and slowly grew more prominent so as he got older he got slightly more feral. Heightening his emotions by a lot. His obsessive, turtle, and violent nature was affected the most. He became especially violent when people were around Casey. Is chill with his Uncle Leo, adores Casey, fucks with his papa, is scared of and obeys April, and is meh around anyone else. Donnson was only able to speak in turtle for some time. Leo was rusty but was able to generally understand and speak with Donnson.

Donnie was helping him find a cure but died before it was finished. Casey was able to make a suppressant using both Donnson's and Donnie’s notes on it. The protective and obsessive nature over Casey stuck along with turtle noises to express emotions. The kraang eye went blind after the suppressant.

Welp Ghost of the Past au won the first round of @rottmnt-au-summit , Yay! And as a thank you, you get a snippet of little Leo, fair warning tho, it is angsty so you have been warned.

Leo woke up confused, whenever he woke up from a nap he usually felt really sleepy even after he slept for a really long time but this time he didn’t.

He looked around the room, he was still in the cuddle pile with his brothers, the walls were still their usual weird brown red color, and the colorful lights were still on. He got up and walked to papa’s room, maybe he could tell Leo why he felt weird.

As he walked his way through the halls he stumbled across his dad’s room. Holding a hand out to move the sliding doors his hand went right through the door. Now he wasn’t very smart like dondon but he knew that that wasn’t normal.

Pulling his hand away from the door and stretching it out again, his hand still went through the door, he held out his other hand and it also went through the door. As much it weirded him out it also excited him. If it wasn’t normal, then that meant he was special!

Squealing a bit in excitement, Leo pushed his body through the door, giggling when his body phased through without a hitch. “Daddy daddy look!” Leo squeaked, running up to his dad’s bed and going to grab onto the mattress but he also phased through it.

As fun as it was the first time it happened, it was starting to annoy him that he couldn’t touch anything, but that’s ok because daddy will fix it! ‘Daddy has to have the answers, he’s a grown up after all!” He thought. He managed to pull his body up and out of the mattress and wiggled his way to his dad.

“Daddy! Daddy wake up! Look!” Leo cried, calling out for his dad. He got frustrated when his cries got ignored and went to shake his dad up.

His hands went through his dad.

Leo let out a yelp, pulling his hands away. He held them close to his chest, tears swelled up in his eyes, this wasn’t fun anymore.

“Daddy wake up, I need help!” Leo whimpered, trying to shake his dad awake but his hands kept going through his dad, why couldn’t he touch anything? Why isn’t daddy waking up?

“Daddy! Papa! Wake up please!” Leo wailed, why couldn’t his daddy hear him? “Appa? Please… wake up… I’ll be good, I promise just please…” he cried, “don’t ignore me… please.”

His cries and attempts at waking up his dad were unsuccessful. He sniffed and clung onto the hem of his shirt. Maybe it’s his new powers that make it so his dad couldn’t hear or touch him? That had to be the reason right? his daddy still loved him right, he wasn’t just ignoring Leo because he didn’t love him anymore?

He wiped away his tears and walked back to his brothers. When he finally arrived at his destination he stumbled back a few steps, the sight surprising him.

In the turtle pile laid him. But he wasn’t sleeping with his brothers. Why was there another him sleeping with them? Panic steadily creeped up when he ran over. “Raphie donnie mikey wake up!” He cried, going to shake them awake and wailed in frustration when his hands went through each of them.

All except Mikey , “Mikey, Mikey wake up!” Leo called out to him. He cried in relief when mikey woke up, his little brother yawned and rubbed his eyes, clearly still exhausted.

Mikey glanced up at Leo before looking at the other Leo still laying on the floor against his older brother. Without so much as looking back up he went back to sleep, not noticing the heartbreak on Leo’s face.

“No no no Mikey please wake up please…” Leo whimpered, going to shake Mikey awake again but Mikey simply grumbled and went inside his shell, effectively ignoring Leo’s cries.

Leo slowly stumbled back, hands in tight balls shaking against his side, tears fell down his face at a steady pace as the situation finally dawned on him.

He couldn’t touch his family members or anything in general and they couldn’t hear him.

His legs shook and his body finally collapsed to the floor, he couldn’t touch them. He couldn’t hug them anymore, he couldn’t talk to his brothers or dad anymore, he couldn’t play with them anymore, he couldn’t tell them how much he loved them anymore.

A steady stream of tears fell down his face and he couldn’t feel them anymore.

He didn’t like being special anymore.

the Mutant Mayhem universe becomes sort of like the "home base" for whenever the four groups get together, because they've got the biggest lair and it's very fun to hang out with all the other mutants as well without having to worry about getting hurt!

omg i have THE idea of the 2012 boys staying over in the MM universe, and ending up going to school with the MM boys, and being pleasantly surprised when they're greeted with smiles and handshakes and high fives, it's another reason they favor the MM universe

the Big Confrontation between 2012 Splinter and everyone else takes place on the 2012 boys' birthday 😌 that's all i'm saying

i want to write out a conversation between 2012 Leo and Bayverse!Splinter, because i love the idea that they click super well, so I can see Leo really opening up to him about everything that happened, especially considering the fact that Bayverse!Splinter, like MM!Splinter, was a rat before he was mutated

Because RotTMNT!Splinter was human before he was mutated, and therefore had a human history, i do think the 2012 boys take the longest to connect with him, just because they're worried history is going to repeat itself. they do have an emotional conversation with him that leads to Mikey calling him Papa Lou for the first time, and that's when that name catches on!

added angst is that Kirby died in this AU, so April gets some angst to since she's kind of always felt like a replacement for Karai, so dw my girl is gonna go through it as well!

the Bayverse boys + Bayverse!April and Casey are so so protective over everyone else, they are the most older siblings to ever older sibling, they love having little brothers and sisters, but hooooo boy during the Big Confrontation there is some cursing out and Bayverse!Casey may or may not have to be carried away by Mikey and Donnie
