DATV — The Musical Angel🪕

(Very young Alba de Riva/Rook [AKA Smalba QWQ]) My first attempt at using this media in… 7-8 years lmao I hated it but the result is cute <3 (Oil Pastel, A3 format)

WIPs & the original this is based on⤵

Based on Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (known as Rosso Fiorentino)'s oil painting made in 1521. It's a fragment of a bigger artwork for a lost altarpiece <3

I started with ocre, since I knew more of the piece would be in that colour so it was a nice base to start mixing and layering other shades. I mainly used red, brow and a greenish teal, since those are his colours ♥

It was tedious to work with oil pastel because:

I never use that media.

It's very messy.

It's not very precise and you know how much I love having control on my strokes. But I'm glad I've at least tried. It was fun in a very chaotic way, I guess XD

The main reason I wanted to redraw this piece with was because of it's iconography. That painting of a candid child, unconfidently playing the lute, looking so small in comparison, especially with that dark background surrounding them. As if the instrument was an escape for the little child… ♥
