Rosemary Beetle

I wanted to try painting an insect, now I have done so I no longer believe they should be subjected to such scrutiny. I drove myself insane working from references at different magnifications and I still have no idea what this handsome fellow is supposed to look like.

I don't recognize the first guy offhand, but I'd say maybe in the fungus gnat and gall midge superfamily, Sciaroidea, just given its general shape. And likely a male, with antennae like those, I would think. But I'm not any kind of confident on that, so if anyone else recognizes it or can track down a god match on iNat, feel free to share.

I saw this very beautiful beetle in the garden this morning, gleaming in the sunshine. The internet tells me it's a rosemary beetle. They originate from southern europe and have only been in the uk since the mid 1990s. Apparently they eat the foliage and flowers of aromatic plants but not enough to cause problems :-)

Happy new year! Winter is always a bit slow, so any and all bugs welcome! This beautiful beetle is of course a rosemary beetle, Chrysolina americana :)

There are over 4,000 species in the UK. They range in size, colour and shape but all have biting or chewing mouthparts and hardened wing cases with wings folded beneath. Around 1,000 beetle species rely on trees and woodland habitats, from decaying wood to breed in, and to carrion to feed on.
