Helena swiftly donned her elegant party dress and busied herself with last-minute preparations as the first guests, the Coombes family, arrived.
The farmhouse came alive with animated conversation as Eddy warmly welcomed them and expressed his gratitude for their presence.
The children eagerly embarked on their own adventures, while the adults engaged in lively exchanges, sharing news and catching up on recent events. Eddy and Daniel found themselves comfortably seated on the couch in the rearranged parlor, while Edith joined Helena in the bustling kitchen.
Seizing the chance to make an impression, Lucile approached Jackson with a beaming smile, her new exquisite dress gracefully adorning her form. She curtsied with a touch of flourish, reintroducing herself in the manner befitting a proper young lady.
As the lively gathering unfolded, it became apparent that the Coombes were not the only guests Eddy had invited to their home for the special occasion. A soft and polite knock on the door caught Silas's attention, and with a spirited enthusiasm fueled by the festive atmosphere, he hurriedly made his way to answer it. With a confident swing, he swung open the door, revealing a woman standing on the threshold.
Edward, hearing the commotion, promptly joined Silas at the entrance, extending a warm invitation to the unexpected guest.
it was Rosella, the woman whom Eddy had encountered years ago during his quest to find Helena's whereabouts. Despite the passage of time, she still possessed a youthful countenance. Her hair was elegantly arranged, and as she removed her glasses, Eddy couldn't help but find her remarkably beautiful.
"Welcome, Ms. Pinkerton," Eddy greeted with a warm smile "I'm mighty pleased you could grace us with your presence. Please, do come in and partake in the merriment."
Rosella gave a respectable bow and smiled warmly. "I am most appreciative of your kind invitation. I must confess, I did not anticipate hearing from you, but I am delighted at the opportunity to reconnect and meet your esteemed family," she expressed, her eyes glancing toward Silas. "This young gentleman here has displayed admirable manners, greeting me and ushering me inside with utmost courtesy."
Rosella commended with a warm smile, "It is truly heartening to encounter young boys who display such initiative, especially in my classroom where many tend to be rather timid. "
Eddy nodded solemnly, "We aim to raise our young'uns properly. " Eddy gestured towards Silas with a proud smile. "This here is my fine young lad, Silas. "
following his father's lead, Silas stepped forward with polite enthusiasm. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, ma'am. How do you do?"
"It's truly a pleasure to meet you, Silas," Rosella responded warmly, her voice exuding intellect and sophistication. "I am Ms. Pinkerton, I had the pleasure of crossing paths with your father some time ago.
Eddy took the lead in the conversation and steered it back to the main purpose. "Well, come along then. Let me introduce you to Mrs. Harrington," he said with a nod, guiding Ms. Pinkerton toward the kitchen.
She offered a gracious smile, "Oh I would be most delighted to finally meet your wife! "
As Silas observed their departure, a wave of excitement surged within him. "She's a teacher!" he mused to himself. "After all my pleas, I reckon Father must've invited her here so I can finally attend school!" The prospect filled his heart with anticipation.

Eddy and the woman settled at a table next to the window, the rhythmic pattern of raindrops against the glass creating a soothing ambiance. The woman leaned in, her voice carrying over the sound of the downpour.
" Mr?…." the woman paused giving Eddy a moment to introduce himself. " Edward. " Eddy spoke stiffly.
"Mr. Edward," the woman began, her voice laced with a hint of uncertainty. Edward leaned in attentively, eager to hear her thoughts. "As an outsider in this quaint town, I find myself struggling to fit in, especially as a working woman in a teaching profession," she confessed, her gaze searching for understanding in Edward's eyes.
Edward nodded empathetically, acknowledging the challenges she faced in a community rooted in traditional values. The rain continued to beat against the window, creating a backdrop of melancholic ambiance to their conversation.
With a touch of trepidation, she continued, "If I choose to assist you in finding Helena will you help me in return? will you make sure not to jeopardize my position and standing in this town? Will you not tarnish my reputation as a school teacher?"
Eddy leaned closer, his voice a hushed whisper, as if sharing a carefully guarded secret. " I assure you, my intentions are not to expose or harm Helena in any way. Tell me what you need. "
The woman leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper, her words almost drowned out by the other patrons speaking in the bar.
"I need support, I'll tell you where Helena is IF you help me put in the effort to promote education for young boys AND girls here in Henford." she said, her tone laced with a tinge of anxiety.
Eddy nodded, his eyes fixed on her, Catching up with Helena turned out to be more dramatic than expected, and Eddy can't deny he was a traditional man himself, women wanting to work just seemed silly to him... but a little education for children can't be a bad thing.
The rain continued to drum against the window, serving as a constant reminder of the clandestine nature of their conversation.
"I... alright I can do that" Eddy replied
Rosella's smile wavered, replaced by a tinge of sadness. "My name is Rosella," she introduced herself, her voice carrying a hint of melancholy. "I am Finchwicks' only school teacher. "
Eddy's gaze softened, recognizing the weight of her words. He could sense the underlying struggle, the hardship that had befallen their small community.
"Times have been tough for all of us," Rosella continued, her voice tinged with disappointment. "And sometimes, survival demands unconventional measures."
Understanding dawned on Edward as Rosella's words hung in the air. She carried a burden of shame, a secret life intertwined with the necessity to make ends meet.
Rosella's voice trembled with a mixture of vulnerability and regret. "I have resorted to taking occasional customers, seeking financial means to support my teaching and maintain a modest living. There exists a seedy Room & Board business, hidden amidst the houses of Finwick, just south of here. Each time I ventured there, Helena was there too."
Edward's eyes widened, his mind racing with the implications of Rosella's revelation. The puzzle pieces began to fall into place, revealing a clandestine world lurking beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic town.
Rosella's gaze held a hint of firmness, a resolute determination. "In a town where nothing happens, gossip becomes the lifeblood of entertainment. Women are expected to remain confined within the walls of their homes," she expressed, her voice carrying a tinge of defiance. "All I ask is that you keep my secret and the truth hidden within it. My sole objective is to preserve the existence of my school, to ensure the future of education in this place."
Eddy's nod conveyed his understanding and unwavering commitment. "You have my word, Rosella," he assured her earnestly. " I reside in Bramblewood, and you are welcome to visit anytime. Your secret is safe with me."
With a tip of his hat, Eddy turned and made his way in the direction of the business called The " Zum Whol. "

As the evening drew to a close and the guests bid their final farewells, Edith embraced Helena tightly before summoning Jackson to his father's awaiting carriage, signaling the end of their delightful gathering. Silas retired to his room, shedding his formal attire and preparing for a restful night's sleep. Meanwhile, Helena guided Lucile to her bedroom, ensuring the careful removal of her elegant dress.
On the porch, illuminated by the gentle glow of lanterns, Rosella seized a last-minute opportunity to engage in a private conversation with Eddy. The night air grew cooler, accompanied by the soothing chorus of chirping crickets.
Rosella eloquently expressed, "Edward, I extend my deepest gratitude for your gracious invitation. I must confess, I am truly delighted to have this opportunity to engage in conversation with you. Allow me to be candid, I have been eagerly anticipating this moment as I hoped to avail myself of the favor you pledged to me years ago."
" Right. " Eddy muttered, scratching his head thoughtfully.
Eddy let out a deep breath before responding, his voice carrying the weight of his convictions. "Well, if we're gonna be honest about it, I remember that favor you asked of me. You wanted my support for them fancy schools you were settin' up. And in return, you said you'd help me with somethin' that needed takin' care of, somethin' that had to be done discreetly."
Eddy's words were laced with caution, mindful of the delicate matter they were discussing. He didn't want to drag up everything Helena had been through. Her dark past was buried away from the community with the construction of this house, and Eddy intended to keep it that way.
"Now, I ain't one to underestimate the value of education, but I've been doin' this work for years. I've learned the ropes, and my kids will learn 'em too. They don't need some fancy school to teach 'em what they can learn right here."
Eddy's frustration simmered beneath his calm demeanor as he found himself entangled in the familiar debate. He couldn't help but feel exasperated by the topic that had resurfaced once again, especially since it was Rosella who had brought it up.
"I reckon I'm an honest man, Mrs. Pinkerton," Eddy asserted, his voice tinged with firmness. "But I don't take kindly to making promises I can't keep. Silas, bless his eager soul, has been pestering me day in and day out about gettin' himself a higher education. And truth be told, I've just grown weary of havin' this discussion. I didn't want you comin' around one day, disturbin' the balance I'm tryin' to establish with him."
Eddy's voice lowered to a hushed tone as he chose his words carefully. "I've become a different man since those days, Mrs. Pinkerton. Back in that saloon, I didn't think much of the value in chasin' after an education. But now, with all these fancy contraptions and the cost of livin' goin' through the roof, I simply can't afford it. And truth be told, my children don't require it."
Rosella's gaze remained fixed on Eddy as he expressed his sentiments, though a hint of annoyance flickered across her face. Eddy forged ahead, determined to bring an end to the discussion.
"I'd rather not dwell on this matter any longer, ma'am. I'm growin' older and weary. Silas is finally puttin' in good work. That's what truly matters now."
Rosella, her frustration tempered by empathy, took a deep breath, acknowledging the intensity of the moment. "I must apologize for my abruptness, Mr. Harrington. It was unseemly of me to broach this topic at a social gathering. You have every right to raise your children according to your own beliefs."
Pausing for a moment, Rosella shifted her tone to one tinged with sorrow. "I simply wish to offer what little I can to a community that has so few resources. The world is an intimidating and ever-changing place, and it is our duty as parents to equip our children for it."
Eddy's anger subsided, replaced by a deep sense of unease, as he absorbed Rosella's words. "The world is indeed changing," he thought to himself, an undercurrent of fear coursing through his thoughts. Reluctantly, he acknowledged the truth in her statement
The porch fell into a momentary silence as Eddy absorbed Rosella's words, his expression weary yet pensive. Sensing the need to continue, Rosella spoke once more, her voice carrying a note of hope. "I have a deep love for teaching, Mr. Harrington, and in observing your son Silas today, I couldn't help but notice his thirst for knowledge. That spark within him will not wane as he grows older; rather, it will only grow stronger. His curiosity is a flame that will continue to burn."
Rosella's voice resonated with a mix of vulnerability and determination as she shared her personal history with Eddy. "I was not raised here, Mr.Harrington. My family resides further west, and for the longest time, I was denied the privilege of literacy. Being an unmarried woman in those circumstances proved challenging, and I had to take various measures to make ends meet."
Eddy's mind wandered back to the conversations he had shared with Rosella inside the saloon. The haunting words she had spoken about her own experiences echoed in his memory, drawing a parallel to the hardships Helena had endured in the past.
Eddy's attention remained fixed on Rosella as she continued. "I don't want that kind of struggle for our children. That's why I've dedicated myself to teaching. My school doesn't require any monetary contribution. Some kind-hearted individuals in the church have generously donated books and desks, but it's purely voluntary. I would never teach anything that parents object to. In fact, I had intended to discuss how I emphasize farming and preserve the history of Henford, ensuring it is not forgotten."
With a composed expression, Rosella bowed her head in respect "I sought a resolution in our conversation tonight, Mr. Harrington, and it seems I have found it. I shall not trouble you further on this matter. I extend my gratitude for the pleasant evening we have shared."
Eddy gave a solemn nod, his eyes fixed on Rosella's retreating figure as she made her way down the steps. The words she had spoken with such fervor echoed in his mind, refusing to fade away.
