Who was this A.N. Pierson? The Rose King of America! 🌹 As the founder of the largest commercial rose grower in the country from the late 1800s all the way through the 1990s, A.N.’s greenhouse enterprise was all a bustle, especially at this time of year. ♥️ His story is notably unique in that A.N. was a Swedish immigrant and mostly employed other fellow Swedish immigrants at the nursery so that they too could succeed in the land of opportunity. 🌹 And succeed they all did. Today I have a rose for you that I grew in my previous garden in San Diego: William Shakespeare 2000. This gem was once very hyped by David Austin Roses as one of their most beautiful red roses and I agree, but only about a decade later it almost seems to be forgotten, a faith that sadly happens to many wonderful roses. In my opinion William Shakespeare 2000 deserves its place in the gardens of the world. The beauty of his large, velvety, crimson red (their color is a little darker than my camera was able to capture), very full, cupped, quartered blooms speaks for itself. On top of that, they also come with a lovely strong old rose fragrance. Do you remember William Shakespeare 2000? Do you grow one of these forgotten roses in your garden? A rose that is now rare or maybe even out of commerce? Please share, so that we all can rediscover and get reminded of these rose jewels that got thrown out of the limelight in the course of time. Ah yes, she's dropped another Rose photo zzzzz 🌹This big beauty is plucked from an ancient bush left behind by the previous owners. I've no idea of its name or breed but I invariably call it #@%$ , as it seems intent on ripping me to shreds every time I try to negotiate my way 'round it with the lawnmower! 😤 🌸Having some great fun with springtime snaps this year, ditching the DSLR and having a fling with the smartphone camera instead. Nico was fairly acquainted with Rosetta. They weren’t the best of friends or anything, but she was very sweet. Nico didn’t quite understand why she seemed flustered all of the time but he was willing to work past that to become proper friends. Besides, she was really cute. The only issue is that she seemed to be friends with Darla, which could cause problems. It would take time for Nico to trust Rosetta, but he figured it couldn’t hurt to try. As he spotted her, he was cautious, fearful Darla was not far. All seemed well though and he waved at her and smiled. “Hey, flower child,” he greeted. Was that weird? “I mean, hey, Rosetta. What’s up? What brings you to the park?” He just assumed she was either meeting someone or admiring the flowers. He liked to go to the beach or park to draw. It was where he did some of his best work. Sometimes if he was at his desk for too long he felt cooped up, despite the beautiful artwork that would come of it. “I came to draw, but it’s always nice to see a familiar face.”

     “So you’ll go on the drop tower?” he replied. There was a challenge in the tilt of his smile and the gleam in his eyes. Neverland days were endless fun, but it was always better when they went on every thrill ride—especially the ones that scared them. Teacups and carousels were cute, but they just didn’t cut it. If he could get Rosetta to agree to one of the big ticket rides, then she’d understand how awesome it was to let go of control and be swept off your feet for once.

Tootles couldn’t help but smile, though he scrunched up his nose a little bit in embarrassment. He was slowly starting to tell friends about his feelings, unable to hide them now that he and Tessa kissed, and he was glad that everyone was being so encouraging about the whole thing. He nodded his head, keeping a mental note of Tessa’s favorite ice cream.

He gave Rosetta a nervous smile, surprised by the comment at the end. It confused him that Tessa may have feelings for him now, when he had liked her since they first met. “I’m always nervous around her,” he admitted with a chuckle, scratching the back of his neck anxiously. “I’m not used to the whole fancy dining thing, either..” He trailed off, referring to their date to Gusteaus of all places. He sighed, the thought of Fawn also coming to his mind. “I just don’t wanna mess anything up between us, or make things weird.” @rosegrows​

It is a little past the middle of winter and I am missing the rose blooms. Here in Austin, where my husband and I chose to live, we truly have four seasons, even though we didn’t have any snow yet this year, we did have substantial frosts and nature is resting. My garden is predominantly green and brown and except pansies I don’t have anything else flowering at the moment. So the joy when the roses start to bloom again will be great, that is for sure. In the moment I just revel in the anticipation of this years rose season to come and pass the time by digging out old photos like this one. Unfortunately, I don’t know the name of this beauty but I am fascinated by the quartered bloom form which leads me to believe that this is an Old Garden Rose (if you have any idea what rose variety this could be, please let me know in the comments!). I also love the many subtle shades of pink appearing in just this one bloom. The complexity of this rose flower is quite fascinating to me! Are you also dreaming of the upcoming rose season?
