The swell and dip of her voice fills the air like a familiar song on a new playlist. I can almost pretend that we’re eight years old again, waiting for my dad to drive us to softball practice. We’ll sit in the outfield and pull up grass. A ladybug will crawl on her thigh, and she’ll scream until I nudge it to crawl onto my finger. It’ll fly away. We’ll watch it go. “Em,” I say, interrupting her prattling. She looks up, lashes fluttering around ice-blue eyes. “Did you win?” “Hm?” “Homecoming queen. I didn’t hear the announcement.” “Oh.” She fusses with the worn hem of her shirt. “Yeah. I did.”

Who Smokes?

Did you know the manor has a dedicated smoke room? decisions made in collab with @athanasius-symposium-of-writings

Smokes Often

Joseph- Has at least one cigarette a day, but he only smokes outside and in a dedicated smoke room, to prevent other spaces from smelling or staining. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Mary- Also smokes at least one cigarette a day, and she uses those special holders. She and Joseph socialize while smoking a lot. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Freddy- He smokes socially, a habit he picked up from events with work colleagues, and also tends to have a smoke after dinner.

Kevin- Smokes cigarettes socially and to relax. Has also been known to dabble in other smokables. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Jose- Smokes in social settings, after dinner, and after sex. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Andrew- Won’t spend the money to buy his own cigarettes but will take any he is offered.

Fan Wujiu- Smokes cigarettes often, and always while drinking. He has and will inhale other substances. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Fools Gold- Gives no fucks—he’ll eat the whole pack in front of you.

Smokes Sometimes

Orpheus- May take a cigarette if offered one, but he prefers pipes and expensive cigars. He doesn’t necessarily smoke everyday, but he smokes after a stressful day, when he’s thinking hard, or in certain company. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Luchino- he’ll smoke cigarettes socially, but never in his office or bedroom.

Geisha- She’ll smoke a pipe to relax at the end of a long week, or after a match. Almost always in company, though. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Antonio- smokes when he drinks. Both of which he did a lot more before the manor, but it still happens a few times a week now. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Emily- Stress-smokes. She has other, better coping mechanisms, however, so this is rare.

Naib- Smokes when he’s hungry, as a distraction.

Martha- Picked it up from some coworkers, but only does it in specific social situations.

Ada- Will accept offered cigarettes out of politeness but barely uses them. She does not let Emil around others who are actively smoking because he’s got enough health issues.

Demi- Rarely keeps her own cigarettes on hand, but running a bar she was around smoke a lot and doesn’t have an issue partaking herself occasionally. Will give you a smoke kiss.

Edgar- Will smoke socially, occasionally, and with throttle anyone who smokes near his painting room.

Melly- Similar to Ada, will accept a cigarette offered to he but hardly touches it.

Alice- Will smoke socially, for the sake of blending in with the crowd.

Qi- Has a smoking pipe, and will smoke a few times a week. But only alone.

Charles- His coworkers did, so he got used to joining sometimes.

Xie Bian- Will smoke occasionally in social settings.

Galatea- Smokes with a cigarette holder because she wants to feel more like a “fancy” lady.

Never Smokes

Norton- Tried it a few times, but didn’t like it. His lungs are bad enough, thanks.

Vera- Does not smoke, and hates being around smoke. She doesn’t want to mess up her sense of smell.

Emma- She’s not interested, and doesn’t love the smell. Gets mad at people if they dump ashes in her gardens.

Lucky Guy- Tried it once, was not impressed.

William- Not willing to risk his health.

Ganji- Same as William.

Helena- Doesn’t see the appeal.

Fiona- She’s tried it a few times, but wasn’t impressed.

Eli- He tried it before and didn’t get hooked. Won’t pick it up again because Brooke Rose dislikes smoke.

Aesop- Can’t stand the smell or the residue.

Mike- Will hang around people are actively smoking, but doesn’t smoke himself.

Victor- Nervous about the health costs.

Luca- Doesn’t like smoking, and doesn’t want people doing it near his workshop.

Anne- Not interested.

Emil- Doesn’t get the appeal.

Matthias- Brings back bad memories.

Frederick- Felt forced to do it socially a few times, hates it.

Joker- Will hang around people are actively smoking, but doesn’t smoke himself.

Philippe- His sister didn’t like smoke so he never partook and doesn’t care for the residue.

Ithaqua- Has some knowledge of other consumable and smokeable substances…but doesn’t partake in tobacco.

Sangria- She needs her lungs, thank you.

Alva- Similar to Luca, he does not smoke and does not want it around his workshop.

Chapter Two: The Watches of the Night

This chapter reminds me a lot of Virginia Woolf's criticisms of Jane Eyre: that the writer felt everything too deeply to have proper literary and artistic distance. Thus artistically it doesn't really work. Yes it conveys necessarily information, but it's a staggering amount of info-dumping that I very often skip during rereads. However, I'm intrigued by how many people in the book club are sympathetic to Ellen and finding the good common sense in her, because LMM certainly doesn't seem all that sympathetic, and she throws all her sympathy behind Douglas Starr.

Douglas Starr is quite interesting to think about after the Jane of Lantern Hill book club because of course the comparisons to Andrew are inescapable. However, Andrew seems to possess a certain wry reality, whether this was because it was written several years later or because of Jane's own pragmatic voice. But Douglas is suffused with a halo of romanticism, even dying slowly by consumption (a rare male sufferer of the disease in the LMM canon). I do know that he's Maud's own wish-fulfillment for her own father, who did NOT raise her alone and who abandoned her to her relatives to marry a stepmother that Maud hated (and who, Maud was convinced, hated her), and so he's seen through the rose-colored glasses of Emily (Jane doesn't possess rose-colored glasses, I'm convinced; they likely fog too much in the kitchen) and death. To go back to the Edenic framing from the previous chapter, Douglas Starr (the embodiment of love) is basically God in Emily's little world. She's incapable of finding fault in him the way that Jane will find it in herself to criticize Andrew and Robin at the same age. Douglas even prophesies her writing success. Ellen Greene, the heretic, gets no sympathy from Maud or Emily.

We also hear about the equally angelic and ephemeral Juliet. The memory of Emily touching her dead mother's face at the funeral is also lifted from Maud's own personal anecdotes, and there's something about Juliet that feels more like Maud grasping after a ghost than creating a real person. Juliet's and Douglas's fairy tale romance doesn't get any realifying coda the way Andrew's and Robin's does. Juliet is just beautiful and then dead. Douglas is just good and loving and then dead. They're what gives Emily spiritual strength to go out (like Christian, alone) into the wilderness of the Murray clan, but again, it's Edenic. It's unrealistically glorious, but also a little bit cloying.

The backstory about the Murrays is of course the most interesting part of this chapter because we know the Murrays will become important and we have to know what Douglas will have to say about them. I do think it's interesting how it's Oliver Murray who takes an interest in Emily's raising, though, because we almost get zero Oliver Murray in the rest of the series.

Dreamed last night that I was reading a version of Emily's Quest where Aunt Elizabeth had died just before the book started and Andrew took over New Moon, having offered to marry Emily one more time. When she said no again he kicked her and Aunt Laura out with no compunction (Cousin Jimmy was allowed to stay because of the work he did around the place) (and maybe Aunt Laura would have been allowed to stay as a sort of unpaid drudge doing all the unpleasant housework, but she chose to leave with Emily rather than endure that, and Cousin Jimmy only stayed because of his gardens? It's hard to remember exactly now), and then Andrew married someone else who started "updating" everything in and around New Moon. Emily and Aunt Laura ended up renting a tiny cottage to live in rather than move in with any of the other relatives (paid for out of what Emily made with her writing, of course), and were surprisingly happy there despite the desecration of New Moon ...

And then I woke up before my sleeping brain could concoct the rest of the story, but now I kinda want to read that version of the third book and see how/if Emily and Teddy get together, and what becomes of the whole Dean situation, and how Emily becomes a famous novelist without Aunt Elizabeth's illness spurring her to write The Moral of the Rose, and how everything resolves at the end.

This album is called FEARLESS, and I guess I’d like to clarify why we chose that as the title. To me, FEARLESS is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. To me, FEARLESS is having fears. FEARLESS is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, FEARLESS is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. FEARLESS is falling madly in love again, even though you’ve been hurt before. FEARLESS is walking into your freshmen year of high school at fifteen. FEARLESS is getting back up and fighting for what you want over and over again…even though every time you’ve tried before, you’ve lost. It’s FEARLESS to have faith that someday things will change. FEARLESS is having the courage to say goodbye to someone who only hurts you, even if you can’t breathe without them. I think it’s FEARLESS to fall for your best friend, even though he’s in love with someone else. And when someone apologizes to you enough times for things they’ll never stop doing, I think it’s FEARLESS to stop believing them. It’s FEARLESS to say “you’re NOT sorry”, and walk away. I think loving someone despite what people think is FEARLESS. I think allowing yourself to cry on the bathroom floor is FEARLESS. Letting go is. Then, moving on and being alright…That’s FEARLESS too. But no matter what love throws at you, you have to believe in it. You have to believe in love stories and prince charmings and happily ever after. That’s why I write these songs. Book prompts: A book with an illustrated cover; a book published more than a hundred years ago; a book with an emotion word in the title

For a book with an illustrated cover, I reread Snow & Rose by Emily Winfield Martin. I remember enjoying this on my first read and, overall, it held up pretty well to a reread. The illustrations are still lovely, as is the writing, but I found myself wondering 'is that a moral or is the author just creating nuanced characters?' a few times. I think this'll be sticking around at least for now.

For a book published more than a hundred years ago, I read The Grey Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang. This one was originally published in 1900 and has a pretty mixed bag of folk and fairy tales, both in origin and enjoyment. But a number of the tales were new to me or were at least new variants and I think some of them would be prime candidates for the February Inklings Challenge (or I just really liked them and would be curious to see them undergo that treatment).

For a book with an emotion word in the title, I read The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. This one was simultaneously easy and hard: easy because it was the only book with an emotion in the title, but hard because it was a longer book with my own mixed emotions on it. The villain in this one is particularly despicable and there is some (somewhat) unexpected villainy on others' parts, but on the flip side there's also unexpected mercy and goodness. Not my favourite of his works by any stretch, but some good scenes for that.
