I think it’s very interesting how hyper aware Rose!Wilbur is. He’s always aware of who is and isn’t looking at him. Even in a room full of people he knows that Niki is the only one who saw him leave. It’s almost like checking if he’s as invisible as he feels or he just notices because he’s specifically trying to communicate with Niki despite his father steering him as far away from her as he can in favour of ‘courting’ Tomys.
Side note: I forgot to mention that Phil full names him when telling him to come to his office after giving Tomys the tour. Right after clearly being disappointed. The pressure is on.
[Niki was clever. Terrifyingly so sometimes.] compliments. Also this is clearly a quality Wilbur admires in her and we learn in chapter 3 that this isn’t just something Wilbur thinks because Niki’s his friend and of course he thinks the best of her. She’s very quick to adapt to Tomys and invite him to get close to the point it forces Wilbur to finally get over himself and his childishness because of Niki can see it then he can be just as good or better (it’s that pressure his father puts on him which he then puts on himself tenfold).
[“The son of the Consil uses ‘foul language’?” He asked in an almost mocking tone, putting air quotes around ‘foul language’.] I love this little shit. [“He sure fucking does,” Wilbur joked as the runner rug beneath their feet turned to stone. “Much to his tutor’s disdain and his father’s pride.”] They would get along so well, probably will too once Wilbur gets past *gestures at analysis* everything. Chapter 3 shows that they have a similar sense of humour, but Tomys doesn’t expect that since Wilbur is always putting up a front
Side note 2: gotta love Phil being proud of Wilbur cursing like he does while Techno disappears. This is the uncle Techno content I need in my life.
Side note 3: Tomys being interested in the gardens and knows so much about plants not only tells us the he’s a gentle soul deep down, it’s also foreshadowing for Wilbur and Niki running into him in the garden because of course that’s where he would want to be.
Anyway, I love how defensive Wilbur gets of the ferronnière since he literally sees it as an extension of himself and a symbol of his value to the point he doesn’t think people would know who he was without it. But Tomys as an outsider makes a good point, Wilbur has lived there his while live, surely everyone knows him (and they probably do), but Wilbur has been raised to believe his only purpose in life is to become the next Consul. To believe the headpiece is important. So he has to justify that and all the pressure it comes with by telling himself people need it to recognise him (there’s so much insecurity there, you could fill the entire palace with it).
It’s so interesting how Wilbur focusses on the ‘freak of nature’ part rather than what Tommy is actually trying to say. It’s like he can’t fathom the fact that people would know who he is without that symbol. That they know who his is without that connection to his father. So instead he focuses on Tomys matter and changes the topic of the conversation, consciously or not. (Note: he does not say me, he reaffirms his position. You cannot insult him because of the title he holds, not because he, as a person, should not be insulted. This boy is all kinds of fucked up.)
(2/?) (it’s 2 right? I already lose count)

wilbur noticing that niki saw him leave was definitely more about niki herself and wishing he could go talk to her than anything else.
I will say, phil full naming wilbur in that moment wasn't completely out of disappointment. while it partially was, the main reason phil full-named him there was because 1) they were speaking in front of a noble they had both only just met and are not familiar with 2) they are quite literally still In Court. it's more of an etiquette thing even for family members to use full names for one another in formal settings like that one in front of other nobles. as another example, if in that moment niki had walked over to join phil, tommy, and wilbur, it would've been considered inappropriate for wilbur to refer to her as niki and instead would've called her nikanna. again though, this is mostly just a situation-specific rule.
rose!niki is very clever and far more perceptive than people give her credit for. wilbur recognizes this for the most part, which we see in ch 3 in the gardens when niki adapts to talking with tommy like you pointed out. she's good at understanding what kind of demeanor a situation calls for while maintaining her sense of propriety at the same time. this serves her well in situations like in the gardens, because even though she doesn't necessarily like tommy, she knows how to use her manners and make herself seem genuinely warm and friendly towards him without missing a beat, unlike wilbur who struggles more with hiding his true feelings.
tommy is SUCH a little shit and if wilbur were a bit less stressed and had less pressure on him from his dad the two of them would've gotten along like a house on fire from the start. we'll get there eventually though lol.
I always loved the hcs about c!tommy liking plants so you know I had to throw a little bit of that in here. also I definitely went down a rabbit hole researching medicinal plants for that tiny section talking about what plants they have in the garden lol
rose!wilbur has SO much insecurity. tommy was pretty dead on, everyone would recognize him without the ferronniere at this point, but wilbur puts so much emphasis on it it's like an extension of himself at this point. which only goes to show how deeply he's connected being the son of the consil with his sense of self worth.

[Dogrose] French Folk Traditions.
Common names : Dog Rose, Hedge Rose, Rosehip.
Vernacular names : dog rose, wild rose, rosehip (name given to the fruit of the dog rose), in France we call it "gratte-cul" literally "itching-ass", it evokes hairs in the red fruits which can cause itching. Also call cynor(r)hodon, kunorhodon (greek) : Dog Rose, Rose du Chien.
The name “dog rose” comes from the property once attributed to the root of this plant, which was supposed to cure the bites of rabid dogs.*(I will talk about this property further when I will translate extracts from Fournier for the botanical properties of the plant.)
Tumblr media
The rosehip is a shrub which, in France, has always had great magical properties.
Suspended from the door or from the ceiling of houses, its branches protect against diseases and spells (North); they prevent cow's milk from drying up, especially after a curse has been cast on it (Limousin).
To cast or "lift" a spell, one uses a rosehip root that one will have picked up in a cemetery on a full moon night. (Languedoc)
Tumblr media
The magical and formerly sacred character of this shrub appears in certain prohibitions (taboos), mixed with fear and respect, noted in the 19th century :
you must be careful not to insult it, otherwise the culprit will be affected by an illness that will only go away when he apologizes. (West)
the young girl who picks a rosehip flower will see her marriage delayed for a year.
if this same young girl (mean virgin) touches the fruit of the dog rose, she will fall from the "high-disease" (old name given to epilepsy.) (Drôme.)
laying rosehip flowers on a grave brings bad luck to the family for entire generations.
-
According to a Breton legend, it's the devil who designed the rosehip while trying to make a rosebush.
-
Magical Medicine:
you must cut a branch of wild rose the same size as the patient and put it to dry in the fireplace. When the branch is completely withered, the patient is cured.
various skin problems can be treated in the same way.
certain healers in the Gard treat their patients by pulling up a rosehip at sunrise, a gesture accompanied by magic words. Healers must then walk away backwards.
Sometimes an excrescence that looks like a sponge grows on the dog rose (it is called "rose scab"). It has long been used to dissolve kidney stones and has long been attributed with all sorts of marvelous properties. It protects against toothaches, it brings good luck (if you find it without having looked for it, or if you can't remember where you put it in your clothes)(Loiret), as a poultice on the kidneys it soothes the pain of menstruation and calms the influx of blood.

I’m running out of time, so let’s get to Phil now. [Noticing his reluctance, Phil narrowed his eyes.] Phil is very good at reading his son. He’s also very good at commanding him. He always knows what he wants Wilbur to do, but it almost feels like he’s disappointed every time Wilbur doesn’t know or want to do that thing himself. Wilbur never really has a choice.
I love the father and son scheming, but some parts of it also make me want to scream at them to get away from the innocent child, mainly Phil.
I also love that for all his sternness and the insane pressure Phil puts on Wilbur, he does love his son very much and he is very proud of him when he does something right, but Wilbur very clearly lives for that validation like it’s the best drug there is. [“That’s good information, Wil. Really fucking good.”]
Still, Phil is always thinking ahead and trying to piece more things together in a way Wilbur has yet to learn. Like I said about chapter one, he’s still a naive kid who trusts his father. He’s also very childish (he’s 18), so he does not want to spend time with Tommy because he doesn’t like him, but he does not have to luxury to be that childish.
I think that’s a big subconscious reason for why Wilbur does not like Tomys. He never got to be that childish. He has always been at the palace. Always had that pressure. And deep down he’s jealous that Tomys gets to be. Because it’s unfair. It’s so unfair to him that he has to carry all this pressure. To all 3 of the teens really. But that’s just the way things are.
And I’m out of time now, so I will be back.
(3/3)
-🎄
phil knows what's best for his son and for their family's future. he wants wilbur to be successful on his own merit, so he's trying to teach him the best he can but he's not... the best at it. hence, his disappointment when wilbur doesn't figure things out himself.
oh yeah I want to make it obvious that while phil puts a lot of pressure on wilbur and has high expectations for him, he loves him so so deeply. every time wilbur does something right, he's so unbelievably proud. he just wants to give wilbur all the tools he needs to secure his own future.
that's such a good point with wilbur. you're not wrong. there is a part of him deep down that's jealous of how childish tommy gets to act. he's immature and silly and gets to say what's on his mind and isn't even aware of the potential consequences. wilbur has been hyperanalyzing all of his own actions since he was a child, knowing one wrong step can ruin everything. he resents tommy for getting to act like that, because he was always taught that children shouldn't act like that. children can handle more responsibility than that. children can be smarter than that. he had to shoulder that weight and be the smartest he could be :(
ty for the lovely thoughts as always spruce <33

Six-ish Sentence Sunday (NSFW edition)
Not for the first time, Roy reminded himself that wanting- fuck, any of this with Jamie didn’t say anything about him personally. It just meant his cock had bad taste.
"Come on," said Jamie, affecting his voice into a breathy whine that was so patently false it made Roy want to roll his eyes every time he heard it. "I bet it'd be really nice for getting your fist wrapped around the us both. Could be lush. Indulgent, you know? Both of us lying back-"
"Me doing all the work," Roy cut in. Jamie flashed his teeth at him.
"That's what you like, though, innit," he argued, and no amount of batting his eyelashes could completely hide the flushed hunger in his expression.

isa has such a complicated relationship with her childhood and trauma. she'll downplay it at most opportunities, or simply lie to avoid a conversation she doesn't want to have. before the events of bg3, only one person outside of her immediate family knows of her past, and esra is isadora's most trusted confidant. no one in the party discovers even an inkling of her past until act 3.
she isn't an orphan, wasn't horribly abused, didn't have something equally as terrible happen to her as a young child, and when most people she meets have had something truly horrible happen to them, it seems small of her to complain. her parents weren't cruel and provided her a fairly well-off upbringing with a governess to boot. still, when she came of age, she didn't hesitate to flee neverwinter and never return.
her human parents, particularly her mother, were mortified when isa was born with her pink toned skin and stubby horns and the inkling of a tail. her mother outright refused to try for more children for the fear of birthing any more tieflings, and grieved the large family she had always wanted for years when isa was young. her father loved her as much as he could in his stilted way, but he also never brought her into the family's merchant business despite her begging.
isa wasn't locked away, per se, but she had known from a very young age that she'd brought shame to her family, that she was unwanted. she was fed, and educated, and given any and all lessons she wanted, but she had few friends and suffered more scalding from her governess than she did affection from her parents. it was a lonely, guilded cage of a childhood.
