Blog Post: Transmedia #1

Donald Glover/Childish Gambino changed the game by making his album more than just an album. The fact that it is also a film, script, website with puzzles, blog, online community, and performance art is mindblowing. This idea is very original, and I personally never heard someone make an album into something more than just an album. The amount of support that he received from the media is unreal. When I search #roscoeswetsuit many things pop up, but all are in support of Donald Glover’s Idea of this transmedia text. Most people do not even know what it means but continue to post about it because they see others posting about it. I have seen many different meanings behind it, some people saying it has no meaning, some people saying it means he is doing a collab album with chance the rapper, some people saying that it comes from the script that was made for Because the Internet. I like the fact that he expanded his album Because the Internet into a plethora of things. It shows his creativeness and it also inspires other artists who may not have thought this was possible. This kind of trans-media text also provides different insights on the same topic and does it from different points of view. The only thing I would say that I dislike about the transmedia text would be the fact that it is difficult to understand the meaning of the trends when they are not explained and the fact that he had ALL of these different platforms branches out from an album. He could have just had an album, script, and film, but he decided to add way more to it. I just think it is overwhelming to be doing all of those things for one album and idea. I do think that this kind of transmedia experience is the future of entertainment because it got a lot of media attention and people would see this as an opportunity to expand their inner creativity.

Are Chance The Rapper and Childish Gambino finally back in the Studio Together?? 

Just Be Patient is the answer. In a recent interview with zane lowe on beats1 radio Chance the rapper confims a collaborative effort between the two MC’s is definitely in the works. Details are scarace however, due to the project being in its early stages, but the two have been spotted together and even posted a photo on instagram toghether with the caption “ “Hawaii then LA, back to work.” followed by the hashtag #roscoeswetsuit. While this is promising don’t hold your breath just yet, no telling how long we may have to wait for this gem.

Transmediation Blog Post #1

After searching into more of Because The Internet’s greater transmedia narrative I feel like this is legitimately something to do in the modern age that can gain a traction only with the sort of far reaching nature of the current systems we have. I don’t personally think that it should be the future of entertainment as a whole, as it would be sort of absurd to consider anything the absolute “future”. Personally just due to the nature of the amount of effort and planning and amount of knowledge that the potential audiences have inhibit it to do as such. So for the example of Because The Internet, we’re looking at twitter feeds, websites, billboards, “#roscoeswetsuit”, an album, a short film, a script, a fake video game. There’s so much across so many different platforms, which in it of itself is incredibly fascinating and I had to legitimately stop myself from falling into the full hole of seeing where everything connected to one another and had to sit back and sort of take it that I was never there in the moment and I missed it, which in it of itself, that also tends to devalue these things as they move serially. Take the webcomic Homestuck for example, it’s a comic with music, animations, and even games within itself. But externally there is an actual game that ties into the narrative, there is a secondary comic that is discussed within the comic, there are allusions to other works including the author’s previous works, the story plays with the framing device of itself and leaked out onto a blog, a DeviantArt page, GameFAQs, and part of the epilogue was available exclusively on Snapchat, it was originally available serially and when the time passed, the novelty and possible interest faded away due to not experiencing it in the moment. Which is something that I consider a lot as to why these things aren’t inherently the future, they may happen more frequently but I don’t imagine that they will be mainstream, I think personally they’re incredibly gratifying and interesting to sort of piece together a story from many parts, there’s something so engaging about giving me parts that are complete on their own that are ultimately just smaller parts of a much greater narrative and, in a way, universe.

Are Chance the Rapper & Childish Gambino Working on New Music?

Chance The Rapper and Childish Gambino might be back to work on their long-awaited collaborative effort. Since teasing the joint project since 2016, the Chicago rapper posted an Instagram photo with Gambino on Monday (Jan. 2). “Hawaii then LA, back to work. #roscoeswetsuit,” read the caption. 

The phrase “Roscoe’s wetsuit” made an appearance on Gambino’s  2013 Because of the Internet screenplay, which featured Chance as his co-star. The two artists have also collaborated together in the past: Gambino partnered with Chance on “Favorite Song” for his acclaimed mixtape Acid Rap. Then, the Coloring Book rapper returned the favor when he featured on “The Worst Guys” for Gambino’s 2013 album, Because the Internet.

Both stars are coming off a successful 2016 with their respective projects. Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book earned seven Grammy nominations, while Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! album notched him a No. 1 on the R&B Albums chart upon its debut.
