Hello! I was asked nicely (yes, he did make me say nicely so that youd know) to send you a message. He wants you to know that he forced (mhm you read that right) his best friends to read your Tattoo fic and the fireflies fic. And they all liked it but obviously didn’t get as overly invested as my brother. But he told me that they both really enjoyed how you wrote the older versions of Britin. They felt like even tho they had no prior knowledge (except what my brother has told them so basically unreliable) that the fic reads really well on its own and they felt like they understood the characters without knowing almost anything.
He has a lot of thoughts about the drag queens you picked. He read the list and went ‘not who i expected but damn now I’m even more curious how this is gonna go’ and he also sent me a text out of nowhere that said ‘YOOO TRIXIE POSTED A YOUTUBE VIDEO WITH BTS SECRETS FROM RUPAUL!! Tell my homie if she needs any research info about it!’
He also saw while he was showing his friends the messages and everything from you and your friends and myself (even I didn’t know this so now i feel shitty) that your sweet Emmett is having some issues and he asked me to send you some love from him and Brian. And I’m also sending you love. Brian the cat was with me for just a few months and I already feel like Rosa after she got that dog Arlo, so I can’t imagine what you guys are going through, I hope you and your partner are okay
Hello dear sweet anon!
Thank you for these kind words about my fics. It means a lot as a writer that they work even for someone who hasn’t seen the series. That’s such a lovely compliment. Thank you for passing it on.
I saw Trixie’s video come up as recommended! I’ll watch it for sure. Please tell your brother that I recommend the book Legendary Children (Fitzgerald & Marquez) for more inside scoop. I am waiting to read And Don’t Fuck It Up (Fernandez) because there is a 20 week hold at my library! (I also loved And The Category Is… [Tucker] which is more about the ball scene) If he wants to nerd out about drag race.
Friend, this message came in just as I was saying goodbye to my beloved Emmett. My spouse and I had to make the call that he was declining and no longer enjoying life. He had been diagnosed with diabetes last year in March and he did very well on insulin but in the last week stopped eating enough to be able to administer it. He was 16+ and the best little guy in the world. He loved my make up and when I would brush his face with my blush brush. He would curl up with his head in my bra cup. He also loved hummus. (Was he a basic white girl?) He and Kinney were best buds until Kinney passed and then he and Olivia were inseparable. I miss him so so much but I also know it was his time. Please ask your brother to give Brian a little extra love in memory of Emmett Honeycutt Theymomlastname-Shemomlastname

We Don't Talk About Bubo...
...and that's a real shame.
Now, let me make something clear: The writers of Encanto were right to cut Bubo Marquez and his arc with Isabela from the movie. It would've crowded the plot, and at the time, it was unnecessary for Isa to have a love interest or for Mariano to have any kind of rival. But that does not mean Bubo is a worthless character who deserves to be hated. His intended role in the film, along with the character design, reveal something very important about Isabela: She inherited her mother's tastes. I mean, look at this dork!
Tumblr media
He's basically Agustín, but as a student in the 1950s.
What's more, because we never officially met Bubo, he is a blank slate. He can be pretty much anything you want him to be. We know he's interested in nature and knows (or thinks he knows) a few things about wild animals and/or survival. We know he was named after an owl for some reason. And we know he's notably shorter than Isa. But beyond that, the man is a mystery. A tabula rasa. We can do whatever we want with him. So that's what I did.
Bubo appears in my fic Patchwork (currently on hiatus due to the need to rework a couple of chapters). Part of my intention with that fic was to establish my own head canon for this character. Since I don't know when (or if) I'll finish that fic, let me share my own personal Bubo head canon with you all.
Bubo is from Bogotá.
He has an older sister named Rosa. Rosa suffers from lupus and also has vitiligo.
Bubo and Rosa attend a university in Bogotá--Bubo as an undergrad and Rosa as a graduate working on her doctorate.
The two of them are very close.
Bubo is shorter than Rosa, so she will never not get to refer to him as her little brother.
Bubo has been interested in ornithology since he was a child. His favorite bird is the great horned owl. His friends eventually nicknamed him Bubo because he would not stop talking about the owl, always calling it by its binomial, Bubo virginianus.
His real name is Alfonso.
Bubo is studying wildlife biology.
When Bubo meets Isabela, they hit it off right away, and agree to write one another.
Isa also becomes good friends with Rosa.
Bubo eventually visits the Encanto, where he meets Antonio and begs him to help him find the rare Andean condor.
Isa and Bubo date for a while, but nothing really comes of it, and their paths eventually diverge for a time. Bubo, Rosa and Isa remain good friends, however.
Whether or not Bubo and Isa ever get back together, I don't know.

AU where the true and free Isabela takes Asha's place as the heroine. She still has the ability of leaving plants everywhere she goes.
Okay!
After Casita was rebuild, Isabela really wanted to explore the world outside of the Encanto.
She discussed it with her parents and Abuela, and despite their concerns and worries, they agree. While they want Isa to stay with the family, her happiness matters more.
So a week later and after a lot of hugs and goodbyes, Isabela was out of the Encanto
First she went to the city of Bogotá, the place where her papá grew up in. Her other Abuela and Abuelo are living there as well.
And in that city, she met a nice guy named Bubo Marquez. The two fell in love, and decided to travel the world together.
So, after about two more years of staying in Bogotá, Isabela and Bubo went on their way to Venezuela, then Brazil.
Then comes an island called Rosas.
Apparently, rumors had it that on that island, there was a king who had the power to grand wishes. Naturally, the couple wanted to go there.
Turned out those rumors were true, as Isabela and Bubo saw for themselves how thanking granted a wish to a common when they were there.
But something felt...off.
And eight teens felt the same.

MUST LISTEN: Although @makyalittle gave this powerful speech and plea long before the current sweep of book bans and the rewriting history about black history (a book on Rosa Parks has been banned from schools) along with LGBTQ+ books (Fun Home, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), this hit me more than anything I’ve seen. Most parents reading this post will never experience first hand what Makya Little had to deal with that day…
It never occurred to me what it must be like to be a black parent and have your child come home and read their own history with such false narrative based on policy. Policy?!
After speaking with Thomas who’s been in education for 21 years and discovering this quote by Jennifer Rainey Marquez, this helped me understand how some of this banning and rewriting started with policy makers threatening to cancel contracts and putting publishers out of business:
After the Civil War, when public schooling became more widespread in the South, Confederate sympathizers wanted to ensure that their children received an “appropriate” education on Southern history and culture which developed statewide adoption policies for textbooks. This allowed the state textbook committees to control content by demanding changes or threatening to cancel book contracts unless the publishers agreed.
To keep their business, Northern publishers began adapting history books to appease Southerners, essentially publishing a separate version of Civil War history for those states. These editions reinforced a lost cause narrative for Southern audiences. For example, they depicted enslaved people as happy and content. Officials even counted the textbook lines to make sure authors had mentioned Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee as many times as Abraham Lincoln or Ulysses S. Grant. - Jennifer Rainey Marquez.
And imagine now happening all over again in 2023.

LIFESTYLE POLICE REPORT: Online Controversy erupts as one Pinay TikToker 'Lumpia Queen' deep-fries traditional Filipino dessert, sparking massive outrage among Netizens and Food Enthusiasts
Tumblr media
SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA -- In the vast and disgustingly vibrant realm of social media, particularly on the platform TikTok (owned by ByteDance Limited), a whirlwind of controversy has erupted surrounding a renowned pinay food content creator, who goes by the moniker 'Lumpia Queen' -- none other than the talented Ms. Abigail F. Marquez, hailing from the picturesque region of Santa Rosa City, Laguna in CALABARZON. Ms. Marquez has garnered significant fame for her innovative and boundary-pushing approach to Filipino cuisine.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, a recent video shared on her TikTok profile (@abigailfmarquez) on Thursday [December 7th, 2023], unexpectedly thrust her into the spotlight, albeit for less favorable reasons.
In this particular TikTok video, Ms. Marquez unveiled a rather audacious recipe by deep-frying the cherished Filipino dessert 'Maja Blanca'. This peculiar culinary endeavor sparked a myriad of emotions among online viewers, evoking a mixture of curiosity, surprise and even disdain, igniting a wave of criticism from netizens and Filipino food enthusiasts alike. What unfolded in this viral video was Ms. Marquez's bold departure from the traditional and authentic methods of preparing Maja Blanca, as she chose to subject this revered dessert to the sizzling depths of hot oil below the cooked pans.
Tumblr media
At first glance, the traditional Maja Blanca, a coconut milk-based delicacy renowned for its velvety and luscious texture, holds a special place in Filipino culinary heritage. Often served during joyful festivities across the archipelago, this dessert's origins can be traced back to Spain, making it a cherished part of its Filipino culinary heritage.
Tumblr media
Ms. Marquez legally presented a contentious video on TikTok demonstrating a detailed process for deep-frying 'Maja Blanca', deviating from its traditional and authentic methods of preparation. But this audacious act of subjecting this classic Filipino dessert to the scorching depths of hot oil has set ablaze a massive outcry from those who perceived it as a grievous act of disrespect, potentially eroding the cultural essence inherent in Filipino desserts.
Ms. Marquez's affiliation with NYMA (Now You Must Aspire), a talent management agency under the esteemed Kroma Entertainment, has further intensified the scrutiny. Backed by the illustrious Globe Telecom group, Kroma Entertainment stands as a pioneering tradigital entertainment company, shaping the landscape of digital content creation.
Adding fuel to the already blazing fire, Ms. Marquez's affiliation with NYMA (Now You Must Aspire), a talent management agency operating under the umbrella of Kroma Entertainment (the company behind PIE or Pinoy Interactive Entertainment, BEAM or Broadcast Enterprises and Affiliated Media Inc. and ABS-CBN Corporation), further intensified the scrutiny surrounding her actions. Kroma Entertainment, a tradigital entertainment company backed by the esteemed Globe Telecom group, which have yet to expire the contract by the new year of 2024, is at the forefront of shaping the digital content creation landscape.
Public backlash against Ms. Marquez has been swift and relentless, with a barrage of negative comments inundating her social media accounts including TikTok alone. Filipino critics argue that her actions not only display a lack of reverence toward Filipino culinary heritage but also tarnishes traditional recipes in a manner that is deemed shameful by many.
In response to the mounting controversy… NYMA, Kroma Entertainment and TikTok Philippines have chosen to maintain a deafening silence, a decision that has only fueled further criticism from those who firmly believe that influencers bear a significant responsibility for their impact on cultural representation. Various online platforms and forums have emerged outside of TikTok, fostering discussions where users vehemently express their displeasure, accusing Ms. Marquez of perpetuating a disturbing trend of inappropriate alterations to beloved Filipino dishes. This incident serves as a blatant reminder that the freelanced online influencers bear the responsibility of preserving the integrity of cultural heritage while pursuing internet stardom of the Filipino.
Tumblr media
Now, the fate of the Lumpia Queen's reputation hangs precariously in the balance, as the online community eagerly awaits her response to the overwhelming backlash threatening to overshadow her culinary endeavors.

A Million Miles Away Review: A Tale of Aspiration & Perseverance
Tumblr media
A Million Miles Away is a biographical drama film that chronicles the remarkable life journey of José M. Hernández, the first Mexican-American astronaut. Starring Michael Peña as José Hernández, Garret Dillahunt as Frederick W. Sturckow, and Rosa Salazar as Adela Hernández, the film weaves together a poignant narrative of ambition, determination, and the immigrant experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-HcUuiLzR8 The Good: At its core, A Million Miles Away is the story of an underprivileged migrant who literally dares to dream big and reach for the stars. The film's premise is inherently inspiring. The film also unfolds with an authentic portrayal of José Hernández's life, filled with obstacles, sacrifices, and unyielding perseverance. A Million Miles Away opens with a glimpse into José's humble upbringing. José is a child of Mexican immigrants in California's San Joaquin Valley. His parents are the embodiment of hardworking immigrants. The type of parents who instilled in him the value of education and the idea that anything is possible if you work hard enough. The family's financial struggles and their unshakable faith in José's potential drive the emotional core of the narrative. Michael Peña delivers a heartfelt and convincing performance as José Hernández. He captures the essence of José's determination, his unwavering commitment to education, and the sheer tenacity required to break free from the cycle of poverty. Throughout the film, Peña manages to convey José's complex mix of vulnerability and determination, making the character relatable and endearing. The film's supporting cast, including Garret Dillahunt as NASA astronaut Frederick W. Sturckow, adds depth to the story. Dillahunt's portrayal of Sturckow, José's mentor and inspiration, is nuanced and authentic. Their mentorship and eventual friendship serve as a pivotal element in José's journey toward the stars, and the chemistry between the two actors feels genuine. Director Alejandra Marquez Abella is known for her ability to delve into characters and their motivations. She does an admirable job of bringing José Hernández's story to life. Dariela Ludlow dazzles with her skillful cinematography. Under her skillful guidance A Million Miles Away captures the stark beauty of the San Joaquin Valley. The film also delivers awe-inspiring visuals of space. Prieto's work helps create a powerful juxtaposition between the humble beginnings of José's life on Earth and his ultimate destination among the stars. One of the film's strengths is its attention to detail. You see this as the film meticulously depicts José's journey. From academia to NASA's rigorous astronaut training program, you see the attention. As the viewer, we're taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. José faces academic challenges, navigates the complexities of applying to NASA, and undergoes physically and mentally demanding training. The film does an exceptional job of humanizing the astronaut selection process. There's a relentless dedication required to overcome the incredible odds. The film's soundtrack, composed by Camilo Lara, is a notable highlight. The music perfectly complements the emotional depth of the story, enhancing the viewer's connection to José's struggles and triumphs. The combination of cinematography, acting, and music creates a powerful and immersive viewing experience. In terms of visual effects, A Million Miles Away excels when depicting the breathtaking beauty of space. The scenes of José's space missions are visually stunning and provide a sense of wonder and awe. These moments effectively capture the magnitude of his achievements and the vastness of the universe. The Bad: Where A Million Miles Away falls short, however, is in its pacing and character development. At times, the film feels rushed, glossing over crucial moments in José's life. It could have benefited from a more leisurely exploration of his personal relationships, particularly his family dynamics and his wife's sacrifices. These elements are touched upon but lack the depth and emotional resonance they deserve. Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Adela Hernández, José's wife, is sincere but somewhat underutilized. Adela's unwavering support and sacrifices are essential to the narrative, yet the film doesn't delve deeply into her character or the challenges she faces as the wife of an aspiring astronaut. A more profound exploration of their relationship would have added emotional weight to the story. The film also skims over some of José's fellow astronaut candidates, missing an opportunity to develop secondary characters and showcase the diversity of the space program. A richer exploration of the camaraderie and competition among the candidates would have added depth to José's journey. Despite these shortcomings, A Million Miles Away ultimately succeeds in delivering a compelling and inspirational story. It serves as a reminder that dreams, no matter how improbable, can be achieved through unwavering determination and hard work. José Hernández's remarkable journey from a migrant farmworker to a NASA astronaut is a testament to the American Dream, and this film encapsulates that dream beautifully. However, the film occasionally struggles with its portrayal of space travel logistics and scientific accuracy. Some of the technical aspects, such as spacecraft operations and zero-gravity physics, are simplified for dramatic effect, which may disappoint viewers with a keen interest in space exploration. While these liberties are understandable for storytelling purposes, a more precise representation would have been added to the film's authenticity. Overall: A Million Miles Away is a touching and inspirational biographical drama that admirably portrays José M. Hernández's remarkable journey from a migrant farmworker to a NASA astronaut. Michael Peña's heartfelt performance, supported by a strong cast and exquisite cinematography, ensures that the film is emotionally engaging. Read the full article
