Nearing the end of Vamptober and today is none other than my other reluctant skittish vampire, Rori Mauer! My lil sweet bean from the urban supernatural storyverse I have~

A lightfoot halfling fit her very well, and she's a rogue/ranger, Inquisitive/Monster Slayer. Makes getting up in the trees easy, for sure! And identifying other creatures and their strengths and weaknesses.

Rori Mauer Fursona Simple Ref, 2022 edition

Finally got around to drawing Rori’s ref for her anthro version~ Hers is a prairie hare, a distinction from bunny rabbits I must insist upon. Bunnies are cute, but Rori vibes with the hare and so a hare’s face structure it is!  It really took me longer than I wanted to get this simple ref cracked out, but it’s here now and I look forward to drawing my gentle vampire again~ c:

Vamptober 2021: Day 27

Is my girl Rori~ Out of all my vampires to pick fursonas so far, she’s the only one with a prey animal. One that I’m still learning to draw, too. xD Rori decided she vibes with a hare for her representing animal, and it quite honestly fits a lot more than I originally expected. She’s super alert to her surroundings, and can be gone in the blink of an eye.  She’s my softie vampire in the cast. c: The one called “most human” among them. Not to say she isn’t tough in her own right, far from it. Just that she’s more in tune with what it is to be human, instead of apex night predator.

In some vampire stories, killing the vampire who bit others will either A. Kill the other vampires the “sire” created or B. Release them from vampiricism. Is there anything like that at play in your verse, or can people totally get revenge on the assholes who bite them?

Oh people can absolutely get revenge on the assholes what made them vampire. Rori’s maker, she didn’t get that opportunity, but he crossed an ally to the Acheron clan and summarily got Godfathered out of existence. Rori would have been too if she hadn’t run for the hills as soon as the mercs descended on her prick of a maker’s house.

Now, Salizar actually got to have this vengeance. He wasn’t supposed to be a vampire, per the agreement of their partially-turned family joining Acheron proper for safety. So his father was SUPER MAD when someone in the Clan turned Salizar. And there’s this thing about tempers running high in the Inglesé family. Vendettas made and nursed over several decades, waiting for the right moment. The previous leader of the Acheron Clan didn’t really punish the woman who turned Salizar, on the grounds that “somebody had to teach him”. Which made the family even more upset. But what could they do? They were still guests by comparison.

But when the power overturned and Kat took the helm, there was the opening. The Inglesés presented the case, and in a fired-from-the-hip decision, it was approved to have his maker destroyed. There was no room in the new Acheron for vampires who were going to go back on their (clan’s) word to a family of refugee vampires+their affiliated humans. 

There was very likely a lot of back and forth rapport-building between Kat (at the time Katharine) and the vampiric members of the Inglesé fam before the fall of the last clan elder and Kat’s rise to power. Time in which sympathies were shared and friendships made, and promises to help each other to the best of their influences and capability. So Salizar and his family got to make the call on the execution, themselves. And uh... Well. They weren’t exactly nice about it. This was still during the Age of Sail when this happened, and Papa Inglesé owned a few ships. A keelhauling was at least one punitive measure carried out, and vampires are stupidly durable. Also I don’t think fishes and gulls have quite the sense of smell to determine the presence of the vampire pathogen. It wasn’t a fast execution. 

All that sort of thing is one major reason why the Acheron Clan is one of the politer strains when it comes to making new vampires: One, it’s rude to turn people without their consent; and two, doing so anyway gives you an enemy for eternity who has a fairly good chance of killing you later on. (This got so long but thank you so much for giving me this box to spout from ;w; )

Some OC fursona warmup sketches! Me dinking around with how I’ll be portraying these guys’ chosen animal versions.

Salizar took FOR-EV-ER to cave and even contemplate what he vibed with. The melee-stomp and impalement methods of the Secretary Bird and the Shrike (rufous-backed/long-tailed) seemed to speak to him, though, and so he is a combination of the two birds.

Selina had hers figured out first of the three here. lol Once she discovered she wasn’t locked to one animal, that is. So, long fox! Red Fox and Ermine, both great hunters, just like her. And the first of the group to pick a combination, which is funny to me since she’s always been my two-kinds-in-one-person vampire. 

Rori, true to her nature, opted for a prey animal. I’m not totally sure why but that’s her vibe and that’s what she chose. They’re fast and pretty evasive, like she is, and having those big ol ears definitely helps in the early detection department. lol She went with the Jackrabbit (a hare) over smaller rabbits for reasons I don’t really know. But she likes it and that’s the point!

Pony!Rori Refsheet, 2020 edition~

I decided to try giving Rori’s pony form some other markings besides her blaze and socks! And uh.... It stuck. xD It stuck hard. I don’t know what it is about buckskin points, but it makes her feel a little more grown up and mature. Also it’s cute~ <3 I did try to draw her wings like a songbird’s wings in shape, since they’re pretty aerobatic compared to larger birds. It’s something that I always considered a key point in her design, but I like diverse pegasi. lol

I decided to give Rori’s pony version an update and make her a pretty buckskin instead of a plain golden yellow horse. It’s stuck so well that it’s going to be permanent. x3 The sketch off to the top right is what would happen if my wild mage/ice sorcerer Soren met my anti-magic thief/swashbuckler Qirani. Soren is highly dependent on her magic, almost to an instinctive level. Qirani, on the other hand, does not appreciate magic or magic users at all.  Under that is a design I was toying with for an OC I’d forgotten about but recently reminded myself that she exists. A high elf x wood elf combat caster gal named Alaena Galathen, retainer for and lover of the Captain of the Guard for a high-elven capital city.

Bottom left is a wing-arms-crossed unimpressed pony!Vess, and to the right of that is what would happen if Vess and Soren met. Shadows moving on their own, and ice creeping up limbs. Intriguing to both of them, though shadow magic is more unsettling for Soren than ice is for Vess. lol

I gotta get some new and updated refsheets out for these gals.

Let's go with Rori and Moon Blaze. I think they might have some interesting interactions if they crossed paths.

Moon Blaze is like... A very wholesome mombat vampony. Very matronly. So if she and Rori were to meet, it would seem almost like Blazie is trying to gain the trust of a feral cat. And in a way, she is. Rori's always wary of other vampires, and Blazie would be no exception.

But with a bit of time and always a warm smile from the bat, Rori would be able to sense that there is no duplicitous intent in Blaze, thereby opening up enough to approach of her own accord. And eventually, Moon Blaze would offer a permanent residence in the Argent Sanctuary for the rogue. Whether or not Rori would accept the offer for longer than a month or two remains to be seen.

Vamptober: Day 9

Pony!Rori gets an interesting ability as an Oakheart-lineaged vampony: She can Detect Vampire at will. It makes her an excellent vampony hunter; zero instances of mistaken identity. Other hunters may call it cheating, but Rori simply calls it “well-equipped”. She can spot a vampony in a crowd without fail.

Talking with Blu brought up Rori’s canon ability to know a vampire and their lineage by sight, and how it would make her a great hunter, and prompted my mind onto SotN-adherent Rori and what she would do and/or be. So here we are! And I have learned that lamellar armor is a challenge! xD

Another worldbuilding sort of question: Among Vampires, what typically drives them to create new ones? What makes them choose the victims they do? I'm talking in the more general sense, like what fellow Vampires might assume when they hear one of their fellows has recently sired a new Vampire.

Ooh I like this one~ :D

Generally speaking, there’s usually one of two reasons a vampire chooses one mortal over another: Personal desire, or pity. Sometimes both.

Vampires born out of personal desire on the part of their sire, they tend to be the ones dragged kicking and screaming into the Night. Lots of hatred burns between these sires and scions, for the most part. (E.g., my OC Vess and her sire.) In these cases, something about the mortal causes the vampire to want them to be together forever. Anything from romantic interest to “I need a pawn or servant” (e.g., Rori and her sire).

There’s also personal desire on the part of the seeker. The mortal who happened to find themselves a vampire and get the fanged fiend to Turn them. Whether just not leaving the old thing alone or falling in love with their agelessness, or whatever selfish reason the mortal has. But then again this one’s not really the vampire choosing; it’s the mortal.

Vampires born out of pity are due to the older vampire finding some reason or another to want to pull the mortal out of a low point, or save them from death. Whether that’s promising revenge, or time to find/give closure, or just getting the spawn-to-be in their debt. Circe is one born out of pity; her sire promised her revenge and closure for what was done to her. 

And how other vampires view someone else Turning a mortal depends entirely on their stance on the matter, and the sire’s status as a rogue or a Clan vampire.Ex: Katarina takes a very low view of rogues siring new vampires, because that means more work for her Clan trying to ensure they don’t blow their world’s cover. “So that sleazy upstart of a brat Turned someone just to be his servant?” - Katarina Acheron, disgusted after being informed of Rori’s sire’s identity.On the flip side, she expects a siring vampire of her own Clan to stick to their decision, since they’re changing that mortal’s life, and their own, forever. She once told Circe that she didn’t well tolerate sires who weren’t all in on their choice to Turn their victim, when Circe sired her first fledgling out of vengeance and saw how the process went.But there’s also sheer surprise, when a vampire who previously vowed against spawning a new vampire, suddenly has a new one about their heels.

Katarina may be my all time favorite in my cast, but she is often followed by those most loyal to her, her allies, and those to whom she’s a good foil. These are almost always the same four or five. Those are three vampires in her Council, one specific werebeast ally from the leading werebeast organization, and one rogue to whom she is contrasted.

Her Council members are a Sicilian Mafioso and vampire law expert, Salizar Inglesé; a Romani bounty hunter/recon agent (office: Bloodhound), Selina “Circe” Raisch; and Spanish-American medical doctor and pharmacological expert, Aureline DeSoto. These three are some of the vampires she works closest with, and understands most, and vice-versa. 

Look, I love a good fictional political intrigue and backstabbing as much as the next gal, but a leader needs good people in her pocket without threatening, blackmailing, and coercing them. The relationship between Kat and these three is all built on common ground, common goals, and actual communication. There is very little that they don’t relay to each other. Seeing vampires constantly backstabbing each other over differing goals makes for a fun movie/game/book time, I guess, but I got bored with the idea and wanted cooperative leadership for mine. I can explore each of them in their own posts!

By extension, the ally and liaison from the leading werebeast organization is all about communication. He’s an Argentinian Trueborn werebat of the White-Winged Vampire Bat persuasion, Alvaro “Chiro” Morales, and he finds more common ground with vampires than he does with his own kind (werebeasts in general), sometimes to his own detriment. It was by the Acheron Clan’s efforts, in tandem with the Therianthrope Defensive Coalition, that put him into his office as the Coalition’s ambassador to the Vampire Nations. So not only does he communicate with the organized Clans of the world, but very often with unaffiliated rogue vampires wandering the earth, too.

Rori H. Mauer is one of those unaffiliated rogue vampires. One who seems to keep brushing with the Acheron Clan, or at least Katarina and her Council. She shares a lot of things in common with Kat, when Kat was still Katharine and not Katarina. Rori’s also the last known vampire of her lineage with no intentions of creating more. Her development has been a very fun exploration of how two similar personalities turn into almost polar opposites based on their circumstances and experiences. She’s been determined to keep her humanity intact as opposed to those organized vampires she views as having caved to their monstrous natures and predatory superiority. At the same time she holds everybody two or three facades away from her actual personality.
