Reading an old Strokes interview and suddenly realizing that Julian Casablancas shaded the fuck outta the band Wallflower… how the hell did I miss that?!

If you had kids, would you want them to be musicians?

The Strokes estrena el videoclip “At The Door” y anuncia su nuevo disco de estudio

Ayer por la noche, The Strokes se presentó en un acto de campaña del pre-candidato demócrata Bernie Sanders. Los neoyorquinos exhibieron una forma notable, estrenaron el videoclip oficial de su nuevo single, “At The Door”, y anunciaron que su nuevo disco de estudio verá la luz el próximo 10 de abril.

Dicen que 20 años no son nada, pero tan solo seis parecieron una eternidad para los fanáticos de The Strokes. La banda integrada por Julian Casablancas, Albert Hammond Jr., Fabrizio Moretti, Nick Valensi y Nikolai Fraiture regresó a los escenarios hace algunos meses luego de más de dos años de descanso. Si bien su público está acostumbrado a los hiatos, lo cierto es que muchos se sorprendieron cuando, entre recitales, los neoyorquinos estrenaron “The Adults Are Talking” y “Ode To The Mets”. 

Claro que ninguna de ellas ha sido lanzada como single, pero a partir de ese momento la expectativa creció de forma exponencial. Hasta aquí, todo más que normal, pero ayer por la noche las emociones se hicieron aún más intensas: su anunciada presentación en un acto de campaña de Bernie Sanders (pre-candidato por el Partido Demócrata) fue transmitida en vivo vía streaming para todo el mundo y no decepcionó en absoluto: además de mostrar a los neoyorquinos en una forma más que envidiable, aprovecharon la ocasión para dar a conocer sus nuevas canciones tituladas “Bad Decisions” y “At The Door”, esta última con su respectivo videoclip oficial. 

Luego de la ovación, Casablancas anunció que el sucesor de ‘Comedown Machine’ (2013) verá la luz el próximo 10 de abril. Bajo el nombre de ‘The New Abnormal’, el sexto trabajo de estudio de The Strokes promete volver al rupturismo de ‘Angles’ (2011) sin por ello perder esa esencia guitarrera y cruda de sus primeros años. Sin dar vueltas, “At The Door” es una canción entre cálida y paranoide dominada por una sucesión de guiños sonoros a vangelis y por una angustia existencial absoluta.

Experimentando sin (todavía) romper los límites, The Strokes elige ir más allá de lo seguro, haciéndose eco de las líneas electrónicas y neo-punk abiertas tanto en el mencionado ‘Angles’ como en ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ (2006). Mientras la voz de Casablancas resuena como un fantasma sobre las varias capas digitales que hacen las veces de base, se genera una inevitable sensación de satisfacción. The Strokes ha regresado y lo ha hecho con una declaración de principios notable.

Theory: The song “Reptilia” is a metaphorical depiction of one’s cycle of addiction. An internal monologue, “The Reptilian Spirit,” (a body-snatching demon) is used as an allegory about succumbing to one’s inner demon—hear me out…

•Brief Summary on Reptilians: The Demonology Of The Reptilian Spirit:

A reptilian is a marine spirit or demon that works and feeds on various energies for specific reasons. Reptilians feed on lustful, animalistic nature; sexual activity, hatred, envy, lies and fear—therefore, affecting specific areas of the human body causing aches, pain, nervousness, and body imbalance. A reptilian spirit resides in the vessels of those who’ve chosen to become a worker of iniquity, (immoral, unfair behavior) denying or rejecting repentance from their ways, (making excuses for their behavior/not taking accountability for their actions.)

“Reptilia” lyrics:

• Imagine the lyrics as lines to a play—a dialogue between two characters that are actually one and the same. It’s an internal monologue, shifting back and forth between the voice of conscience, to the voice of ego.

•The opening line reads as a general observation, displaying a subtle hint of uncertainty to the way others perceive him.

•The second line is delivered by his ego, (“Reptilia”) encouraging him to enlighten others with charm to prove his self-worth.

•He starts to feel unwelcome, coming to the conclusion he hasn’t made a good enough impression. To salvage his dignity, he self-medicates to cope with his insecurity.

•Alcoholics can’t stop after only one drink. The pre-chorus is the voice of ego, justifying their consumption to oneself by concealing their lack of self-worth to override the unsettling state of their current mindset/situation.

•“Reptilia,” (the drunk alter ego) begins egging him on by encouraging him to self-destruct. Ego begins to taunt, and even belittle him(self.) “yeah, the night’s not over—you’re not trying hard enough.”

•Since he and his alter ego are one and the same, he refers to it as “our lives,” acknowledging that he is headed in the wrong direction because he has lost control of his addiction. He’s fully aware that his dependency has derailed his life—severing the path to future aspirations.

•At this point, “Reptilia” takes control. Too drunk to be bothered by his glaring faults, he drinks himself into oblivion, giving into his inner demon.

•Merging into the next verse, the riff from the intro starts to repeat the same pattern. It almost sounds like a “buzz,” signifying that the cycle has started again at the beginning.

•Ashamed with himself for succumbing to his ego, “Reptilia” convinces him that he is not the problem, but the circumstances that he cannot control, deflecting responsibility. (Something people struggling with addiction often tend to do.)

•Tensions grow in his relationship, (most likely over his substance abuse) which negatively impacts his self-esteem, feeding into his dark thoughts even more. Alluding that his partner is leaving, (presumably, without him) stirs unwarranted feelings of jealousy. Ignoring that his behavior is most likely causing the downfall of his relationship, he refuses to take any blame.

•”You sound so angry, just calm down, you found me,” read from the perspective of “Reptilia,” hits so much harder than if it were said by a significant other. Ego entices him with the comfort of dependency. It’s much easier to drink than it is to communicate how he feels. Instead of addressing his concerns about his relationship, he gives into the cycle instead.

•It exemplifies that his addiction has spread beyond an internal struggle—it’s impacting the lives of the people around him. Not only is he losing himself to his addiction, he’s losing the people around him—the ones he cares for the most.

As much as I love the theory of the “reptilian brain,” I randomly thought of the body-snatching concept while looking at the cover art for the single—the 1981 arcade game, “Centipede.”

Since the title of the song isn’t “Centipede,” or even “Reptilian,” (which I saw was also a common theory about being “cold blooded”) I started thinking about the wild theory on Reptilian body-snatchers. I’m sure I’m wrong, but wanted to share my theory since no one else has seemed to think of it yet. I like listening to songs in different perspectives until I reach one that gives it a higher power, (I’m weird.) Personally, in this case, this song has been given a higher power now because of this thought.
