Before she could explain the grisly vision, there was a crackle of static from their walkies and then El’s voice was barrelling through the quiet of the library.

“Get out! It’s a trap! It’s a trap!”

Steve pulled Nancy to her feet and they ran for the doors before she could grab her pack. She made it two steps before the floor beneath her boots was collapsing and a vine was winding around her ankle. She felt the sharp tug and then she was being pulled down, down, down through the rough hole in the floor.

Why Stranger Things?

I’m a huge Winona fan (and an 80s media enthusiast) so almost a decade ago this show was big deal for me. I was finishing high school when season one came out and had this sudden “Oh… ” sense that I’m sure a lot of people can relate to when a piece of media will stick with them. It’s one of the more consistent things in my life and I’ve met so many people because of it: Halloween watch parties in the dorm when season two premiered, my first summer living in NYC was spent watching season three (and crying over the Stobin bathroom scene), and of course the people I’ve met after finding it hard to maintain adult friendships in a post-pandemic world during season four. I’ve always been involved with some kind of fandom, writing and making art, but Stranger Things was the first one I felt comfortable enough to share and have it be perceived by a larger audience. Over time it sort of grew up into this beast like what happened with D'Artagnan. It’s big and scary, it’ll eat your cat, but with assurance from your friends swinging a nail bat at interdimensional demons for you, one can feel safe

What's your favorite character or ship (platonic or romantic) to create for?

I feel all giggly answering this. Anyone who knows me knows my main squeezes are the Fruity Four! Fun Drac Fact: it was Eddie Munson who gave me the courage to start sharing my creations. Stobin, Steddie, Ronance, each character in these dynamics all have something so real about them that you can see yourself in them. The way the get angry, the way the cry, love, fight, and persist; I love playing with all these Barbies until they all look like Cynthia dolls.

What's your typical writing process like?

Chaos. A playlist is the first step usually. A trusted friend with an open ear and a shoulder to cry on when I get the inspiration is crucial. It all hits me like I’m Wile E. Coyote and there’s acme anvil falling from the sky. A lot of the time it’s a collaboration. Once the vibe is achieved it all just flows out of me in some weird insufferable trance. If I don’t get it done quickly, it won’t happen at all. This process is not recommended for those who want to keep a consistent update schedule, but it really has produced some of the best works I’ve written. It’s all very flowery, I’ve been told I have my own distinguished poetic prose. I have an issue with authority when it comes to following structural rules. What comes out of me is raw and lyrical, it’ll give you that rollercoaster swoop in your stomach and move you to tears, or it’s the most rocks-for-brains sentence you’ve ever seen and wonder “hey man, what the actual heck did you just say?” Towards the end I sometimes send it to a trusted friend to read over while I go hide and face the wall Blair Witch style until she finishes.

What's your typical drawing process like?

Typically for fandom my personal pieces are inspired by wanting a sense of comfort, or having a stupid joke that maybe me and like seven other people would like. It’s all subjective, really. I’ve always been drawing. It’s one of the things where I can just shut off my brain for a while. It’s an escape. An expression outlet. When I want to write but don’t have the energy, I draw. When I want to draw, vis-à-vis. Really, it’s kind of like storyboarding. I’ll draw out the idea and once I have an image, I can bring it to life. An example being Bloodflowers, an Edward Scissorhands inspired AU for Steve Harrington.

Where do you get inspiration for your xReader personas?

A lot, if not all, of my reader inserts are from pieces of myself. Vices and virtues and such. I find that writing these personas helps me work through whatever big feelings I’m feeling, or to satisfy that daydream itch when I’m deep in a new movie/TV/Book. The persona inspiration will range from characters like Susanna Kaysen and Elizabeth Wurtzel, to Mary from Party Girl or Celine from the Before Trilogy. You can also depend on them to display traits of an INFP, and hopefully pick up some of the songs that heavily influenced the writing.

What's been your favorite project so far?

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child but I’d say the Gutterballs project, written as an ode to the friends I’ve met since writing for Eddie. Eddie and the reader from my Saturday Night/Sunday Morning series (who is now an OC, Sally Gutierrez) have podcast called Gutterballs- think Trixie and Katya but with an old rockstar and a music photojournalist. It’s Valentine’s Day and Eddie is covering up old tattoos that were dedicated to old lovers (inspired by my friends.) In each segment he talks about the person he loved/still loves; each tattoo was a little love letter. After I posted the fic, each one of my friends then wrote a story in reply to their character reacting to Eddie talking about them, not with hate or regret but appreciation for the way they’ve helped him be the person he is now. It wasn’t a requirement to post a reply, but everyone felt so moved to do so. Everyone’s reactions made my heart so full and reminded me why we even share our work. It connected all of us creative souls. I’ll cherish that moment forever like a tattoo.

What's been your hardest project so far?

Currently I’m working on a piece for the Steddie Classical Art Zine! It’s my first time working on a fandom collaboration project this size, there’s a lot of amazing writers and artists involved so I’m definitely feeling a bit of the pressure!

What was your favorite comment or interaction you've received so far?

Most famously, deadboyfriendd commented on my childhood friends to lovers fic Trapped Under Ice that it made her want to eat a jean jacket- and since then we haven’t been able to shut up about projects, music, and just being each others’ little tamagotchi. Anything from @tomtomslongdong made me smile, I saw they were a highlighted reader and for good reason! I can also always count on @jo-harrington and @br0ck-eddie to give me feedback on all my works, silly and mushy alike.

Is there anything we didn't ask that you'd like to add?

Yeah sure! Keep A.I. slop out of fandom spaces, check yourself before you wreck yourself, and be excellent to each other.

Hi, I'm the anon that asked you about Ronance.

And well, since you asked my thoughts on Ronance, I'm back here to give them.

So, I think Ronance is beatiful, like the best ship for me! They just have so much chemistry!!!!! And I agree with you, I love how Natalia and Maya are literally the queens of the Ronance community, God bless them!

What I don't agree with is the fact that Robin and Nancy would actually do get along. Actually, we did saw them get along in season 4.

I mean, yeah, at first Robin thought Nancy was a priss and Nancy was initially annoyed at Robin, but they both changed their mind when they got to know each other better.

In Pennhurst they were able to collaborate perfectly together (they gave each other an high five after Robin's speech helped them), and that scene they had in the woods, where Robin called Nancy her friend, and then Nancy literally asked Robin if they were officially friends and Robin said yes...the cuteness was just❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

So, it seems to me that they already are good friends.

And I think they would be even better as a romantic couple.

They would actually work so well as a couple in canon, I think they could make them canon if they want. They probably won't (sadly), but they could it.

And actually, about Nancy being queer, I could actually see it. Honestly, Nancy gives a lot of comphet vibes, so her being queer would make sense, and it could be a really good arc for her, if only they would do it (at least, fanfics exists)

And I mean, Nancy and Robin are probably the two best characters in the show, so them as a couple would be *chef's kiss*!!!

Anyway, yeah, these are my thoughts! Sorry for the long ask, but I needed to say all this! I respect your opinions, but I also wanted to give my view. Ronance just gives me this effect, it's such an awesome ship for me!!!!!

I am so glad you answered! I love having these kinds of discussions.

Maya and Natalia clearly get along well and work to create such great chemistry between the two including when they aren't sure about each other at the beginning of season four. They would probably be unstoppable if ronance was made canon but I think the duffer brothers are too cowardly to do it!

When it comes to them getting along let me clear up that I don't think they wouldn't get along like innately. But most relationships are going to have fights and communication styles can make or break coming back from fights and disagreements and I just feel like Nancy and Robin would do better as friends having little tiffs and maybe having someone like Steve help them figure out those kinks in they're different styles than as partners who will likely have bigger problems to tackle. But that's just how my little imagination goes with the characters and maybe I'm not seeing the vision. Nancy is super determined so I could see her being determined and even downright stubborn to get her and Robin through a disagreement, to be fair.

This is why I love having discussions like this about characters and their relationships because hearing other peoples ideas and POVs gets me thinking in a whole new direction than I was before.

I'm glad you brought up Pennhurst cause truly I could watch that whole sequence a million times over and is one of the reasons I do still ship ronance just more on side than one of my main ships I usually focus on. And as someone who has had difficultly making friends throughout my life and never understanding why people didn't like me etc I really love the scene between them when Nancy asks if they are officially friends. I had a similar moment growing up when I very nervously asked my best friend if they could see us as platonic soulmates and I was so nervous they were gonna think I was crazy and guess what they didn't we are indeed platonic soulmates lol. Also seeing Nancy enjoy having a new friend who isn't a boy or one of things or something is really sweet since she hasn't had that sense losing Barb (my roman empire tbh).

I've already said I don't think the writers are gonna make them canon (and I think we've gotten confirmation that Robin and Vickie are for sure getting together) but I really hope they don't ignore the friendship they've created between them. I don't want it to be pushed aside in favor of Nancy having boy drama again or something.

Honestly I can get behind Nancy having comphet, I think it would make sense with a lot of the themes we've already explored with her in season three (and a bit in other seasons as well) around misogyny and feminism and the like.

Truly thank god for fanfiction. If you ever feel like dropping by again and giving some ronance fic recs I would love.

In honour of the most recent Stranger Things Day- 40 years since Will Byers went missing- I’ve decided to piece together this experimental little collab. If you’re interested in joining, or know someone who might be, please keep reading.

🪦WHAT IS TEN BY TEN?🪦

Ten by Ten is a joint writing session where each participant is assigned one of the ten Stranger Things characters on the list, and their task is to write a oneshot chapter on the topic of that persons death. It can include any ships (no pro-ships or clearly illegal ones 😭) and can be in any setting or timeframe. They can die in any way. The minimum word count for each entry is 1k words.

elaborating on what i will now call the susie save your love au‼️

sort of inspired by @faunshii and their art of s1 robin bc it absolutely works w this idea! pls check them out they’re so awesome😭

but! the idea is that robin and nancy become friends in season 1, teaming up to find barb since they were both her friend. in this scenario robin basically replaces jonathan, who’s on his own hunting for will instead of teaming up with nancy. i think they collaborate sometimes but main pairing is ronance fs

this shifts their dynamic slightly! nancy isn’t stretched so thin when she meets robin and they bond over mutual worry, robin’s rambling is a comfort to nancy way sooner and she readily accepts liking robin, grateful to have a friend especially after barb is confirmed to be dead. when nancy narrowly escapes the upside down robin stays to comfort her just like jonathan did, but this time steve doesn’t assume nancy is cheating bc its the 80s and girls can’t love girls. (DISCLAIMER i dont think nancy ever cheated on steve its what he assumes)

he ends up getting tied into all of it anyways when he tries to find out what nancy is being so secretive about and why she’s talking to robin buckley of all people and its the near the same scene (why r jonathan and robin so similar hold on) and by the end of s1 robin is head over heels for nancy wheeler who hates the nuclear family and is really good with guns. nancy is also enamored with robin but it sorta terrifies her that she seems to have romantic feelings for another girl (nancy is NOT oblivious she’s just scared) so she clings onto steve and their safe relationship.

this is where susie save your love comes in. nancy is really struggling with steve, he keeps trying to get her to forget about barb, he keeps dismissing her grief, she doesn’t even see him the same anymore, or perhaps she was thinking more clearly about the way she saw him. either way, she’s struggling, and the only solace she finds is spending time with robin, who just gets it, and gets her, and ends up inviting robin to come with her hoping to some stupid halloween party to maybe unite the way she feels around robin (so happy) with these social events.

and she obviously gets fucking drunk when robin isn’t there (as far as she knows)

and THEN gets into The Fight with steve and then

Yes, I do. I got into it too rather recently (back in summer) as I did a kink bingo writing event. A lot of it is kinky, obviously lol. Beyond that I'm not sure how to explain it cause they each vary/are pretty different from each other. Some are really out there/dirty and others are more tame, just depends on the fic

Do you write cross-overs?

No. I wrote a bit of one in the past for Narnia x Harry Potter, but I never did anything with it and I haven't written any since then. Unless you count Omegaverse, no

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I think so. I remember someone asking me at one point if they could translate one of my fics but I never checked to see if they actually did so I'm not 100% sure

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not really. I've helped other writers with ideas for their fics and they have helped me with ideas for my own but that's the extent of collaboration I've done for writing fics

What WIP would you like to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oh God, where do I start? I'd love to finish A Pain Worse Than Death but low-key don't know if I will. I also would love to finish some other AUs I have in my drafts like my Wyler Circus AU and my Wyler Goody Two shoes/Rebel AU, as well as some Ronance fics I have in my drafts

What's your all-time favorite ship?

Honestly, probably Wyler. But beyond them I also adore Ronance (Robin Buckley and Nancy Wheeler) and Shirbert (Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe)

What are your writing strengths?

Grammar and I like to think I'm decent at descriptions and characterization

What are your writing weaknesses?

Tense! I always subconsciously switch between past and present tense and it drives me insane!! It's something I always have to go back and fix/check for. And maybe dialogue, sometimes I struggle with that. As well as just finishing projects before starting a new one lol, I always have like 500 million drafts all at once that I'm working on

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think it's fun to do sometimes but I don't do it much and if I do I try to do a language I am partly fluent in (like Spanish) or do a lot of research beforehand to ensure it's as accurate as I can get it

Harry Potter I'm pretty sure

Favorite fic you've ever written?

Maybe Coffee Memories (I really like the characterization in this one) or A Pain Worse Than Death (the angst is just so delicious) or Scars Never Leave (I like the sort of hurt/comfort of this fic) or Safe Haven (it's the only Madwheeler fic I have and I like the angst and tone of it but I wrote it several years ago so it needs updated a lot) and then a lot of ideas that are just in my drafts

What fic would you want to rewrite one day?

Condolence because the first half of chapters are very short and lack content and I'd like to fix that, to try and make chapters more similar in length (like at least not like a 400 word chapter then a 3000 word chapter right after each other, yk) and Safe Haven (it's alright but could use some work to be more consistent in its plot and so it would work better, I'd just like to update it with my more recent writing style and knowledge since it's a few years old)

After my original musings on the Streamers!Stobin & Deranged Fic Author!Eddie AU (post linked here), here are some more thoughts, Ronance Edition:

In this universe Nancy is also a streamer who uses Nancy Keene as her professional name (in reference to the pseudonym used by the authors of the Nancy Drew books, Carolyn Keene), except her content revolves around political commentary and reporting on whatever major news is breaking on the internet. She focuses on correcting misinformation and providing reputable sources for things, since we all love purposefully spreading misinformation on the internet (surely we all know the meme I’m referencing), mainly so that when she issues or accepts a challenge to publicly debate someone she knows she’ll aboslutely wipe the floor with them. Her political commentary is pretty iron-clad as well, to the point where it just makes the conservatives look bad when they say she doesn’t know what she’s talking about because not only is it obvious she does, but she probably wrote the book that everyone else learns about it from.

So Nancy Wheeler is usually very no-nonsense in her content. The most casual her streams ever get is when she’s doing a Q&A stream and might deign to answer a couple of questions about her personal life, as opposed to her political leanings or thoughts on journalism-related topics.

This is why no one really knows how to handle it when she pops up as a special guest on BirdBox_’s twitch stream. What’s more, they’re playing Minecraft together, and Robin is busy building their base and making it look all pretty while Nancy goes charging into the mines for resources.

Neither of them address it for the entire two hour stream, just acting like it’s totally normal and common for them to collaborate together like this - and from the way they’re interacting, they’re clearly close. There’s a few moments that come across as awkward, where Nancy makes a joke that Robin laughs just a bit too hard at, or Robin rambles on about something the way she does and Nancy’s response comes in too late, her webcam showing she’d just zoned out and stared at her screen. These moments are outnumbered by the number of times they genuinely thrive in conversation, such as bouncing off each other and one-upping a joke until they both get killed by a creeper because they got distracted laughing. (Nancy was so mad about that one, she had 10 diamonds in her inventory that just got lost forever.)

Seeing how well they get on, and how much they’re both clearly enjoying it, both Nancy and Robin’s fans decide to just roll with it. There’s a healthy subset of Nancy’s fans who have wanted to get to know her a bit beyond her professional persona and hope she doesn’t feel pressured to only make that kind of content, and Robin’s fans are enjoying seeing a different side of her to the one that comes out with Steve. It’s a win-win-win; the fans get some great content, and Nancy and Robin get to spend some quality time together and get paid to do so. Fantastic.

Afterwards, Robin is an absolute mess, obsessively watching and rewatching the VOD and bemoaning how obviously smitten she looks. She won’t stop on her own, so Steve has to hide her laptop in the one place she’ll never look for it - the drawer in his bedroom containing his sex paraphernalia. (Which is really not as exciting as that makes it sound; Steve wishes he was having sex even a fraction as wild as some of the stuff his fans imagined him doing, but then just getting laid at all would be a good place to start. It’s hard out here for the hopeless romantics who want to get laid but are sick of it not meaning anything.)

Meanwhile Nancy, nearly a thousand miles away in Boston, has her sights set on a brand new mystery to solve; is Robin Buckley an appreciator of women? Does she by any chance kiss girls? How does she feel about the colors orange and pink, especially when there’s a white stripe in between them? Or the colors pink purple and blue for that matter, but Nancy’s already bringing those ones to the table. She’s absolutely not letting herself entertain any thoughts of what might happen if Robin is gay, since that would just be setting herself up for disappointment if she’s not. The internet seems convinced she’s dating her roommate-and-best-friend-and-business-partner, but Nancy’s never trusted the internet’s popular opinion before and she’s not about to start now.

Robin and Nancy keep streaming together. The ones on Robin’s channel are them playing games like Overcooked, Animal Crossing, a tonne of Minecraft (which Steve joins in on eventually and keeps building the ugliest houses ever), and on a few notable occasions It Takes Two. The streams on Nancy’s channel are less frequent, and usually consist of Robin popping in for a Q&A stream, but there’s been a few times where they’ll bounce back and forth off of each other in one of Nancy’s political commentary streams.

Before long people start shipping them. It’s mainly Robin’s fans, since Nancy’s fans are not the fandom type of people, but with all these new streams Nancy’s been doing with Robin she’s starting to build that sort of audience for herself as well. Robin is equal parts thrilled and mortified, because oh my god they think I should date my crush and are writing stories about me doing just that this is the best day of my life, but also oh my GOD poor Nancy must hate this and is never going to stream with me again. She doesn’t calm down about it until Nancy is asked about it on stream a couple of weeks after the shipping started to get really out of control - and that was all thanks to someone deciding to @ Robin and Nancy on twitter under a thread where someone had written an absolutely deranged fanfiction about them through the medium of fake social media screenshots.

(Nancy takes a long sip from her cup of tea before reading out the next question from her chat window. “Dear Nancy, how do you feel about being shipped with BirdBox_? Or people writing about you? Because BirdBox_ gets that sort of thing a lot but you haven’t had to state any boundaries about it before.”

Nancy hums to herself. “That’s a good question. You’re right, I haven’t had this kind of audience before - not that I mind, I love Robin’s fans and I’m so thrilled you’ve all seemed to welcome me in to your space.” Nancy leans back in her chair and looks off into the middle distance, her foot absentmindedly spinning her chair a little as she thinks. “I would say... it’s ultimately up to Robin. As you said, she has experience with this, and I trust her. Whatever she says her boundaries are, I have the same ones.”

Nancy looks back at the camera and smiles, pleased with her answer. After a moment, however, her eyes widen and she rushes to add, “And don’t make sexually explicit or inflammatory content about me, but I would hope that’s obvious enough that you wouldn’t do it anyway. And I would hope Robin’s told you not to do that too.”)

If Nancy’s quietly thrilled that people think she should date Robin, and is using this as a way to put the ball in Robin’s court about how she feels about dating another woman (maybe even dating Nancy specifically?), then that’s Nancy’s business and Nancy’s business alone.

I am not from the US, I know nothing about the country except what I learned from having a hyperfixation on Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, all I know is according to google Emerson has a Boston campus so badda bing badda boom that’s where Nancy is. Stobin meanwhile live in Chicago, and I haven’t decided where Eddie is yet but my gut says Indianapolis. Actually yeah after thinking about this for five seconds I’ve decided, Eddie & the CC boys are from Indianapolis and grew up there.

Also for context, the gang (Steve, Robin, Nancy, the Party, basically everyone but Eddie and the CC boys) did still go to high school together in Hawkins only for the older teens to move away for college/to live their lives away from the shackles of rural midwest America. Upon finding out they all became streamers/internet content creators, Nancy reached out to Robin and Steve to say “hey, I don’t know if you remember me from high school, but I remember you!” and things snowballed from there until they became friends. (I haven’t decided if Steve and Nancy just never dated in this AU, or if they did and it was significantly less of a big deal due to the lack of Upside Down trauma. Plus I’m imagining them in their early-to-mid twenties here so even if they did date they’ve had longer to get over it.)

That’s v true lol so what did they see? Also by collaborators I need them to not have listened to a single thing shawn said otherwise we’ll get a combo of the worst things (Eddie as a 🧛🏻 bc it’s popular, stancy chicken nuggets bc he’s obsessed with Steve etc) 🫠

Like honestly they realllly shouldn’t listen to noise and should just write the best story not change things based on reactions.

Btw re: if it makes jancy endgame more likely idk but I think Nancy remaining single is still the most likely thing they’d go for but I wonder if that’s based on feedback (they really might have been going for stancy and changed that).

He looked like he might argue, try to convince her to let him stay, but instead he gave a quick nod and said, “You have a radio, right? You’ll call if you need anything?”

“I do, but what I need right now is to be alone and away from…everything.” Nancy got out of the car carrying her pack and the bundle of her belongings. She didn't bother putting on her shoes.

Before he drove off, Jonathan called out to her, “We’re all still here for you, you know that, right?”

“Maybe you shouldn’t be,” she told him flatly and started the half mile walk to the cabin as the sky above began to change to the lighter shade of dark that signified morning.
