Character Focus: Romeo (Part I)

This is Romeo's first line:

Little did he know.

Feel the pressure yet, Romeo?

Then Gilles de Rais comes in (we never see his face but we know it's him, right? *wink wink*) and proposes a deal with Luca Pastorini to get rid of the entire Golzine line. Romeo is clearly not on board... and as usual, his father shut him up.

Romeo, the honorable man entrapped in a less than honorable life by a homophobic, abusive father...

Caught in the act, he has no choice but to lay low and obey. Which he has always done before anyway.

Luca is not only abusive towards his son. He is an absolute shit to his wife as well. So much so that she... is not exactly in her right mind most of the time.

Zeke is the only person who knows and understands what the family is going through under Luca's reign of terror.

Romeo hates his father's scheming. When invited to Nathaniel and Ivy's funeral, he looks away.

Laurie notices.

Anyway, probably because of the scandal, Luca sends his son on what is basically a suicide mission to off Laurie directly. We get a glimpse of his relationship with his wife, Georgia. An arranged marriage, there is clearly no love lost between them.

Their communication is so bad that Georgia doesn't even tell him she's pregnant before he goes. She had to know he was caught with a man, and feels humiliated and lonely.

Poor Romeo finds himself in what he describes as a grey and cold city, with the mission to kill a young boy or to be killed himself.

With his father constantly on his back to shoot Laurie before the Hei clan does, Romeo finally gets an opportunity when Laurie is alone on his parents' grave.

Unsurprisingly, he can't do it... Good thing too because it was a trap.

At this stage, Romeo is quite sure that he's going to die. He's ready, even asking for it. Even Erik looks mollified for a second.

Which brings us... to Romeo's capture.

Laurie tries to barter for Romeo's life with Luca, but realizes with shock that Luca doesn't care about his son's fate.

He's got nothing left to lose, so he openly admits to being gay for what must be the first time in his life.

Still very much convinced that he's going to die one way or another, he makes a last wish for his mother.

But Laurie has other plans for him...

What uncommon/common fear do they have?

Romeo is still traumatized by his father so he will always be scared of being "exposed" (as a fraud, as a gay man or as a pushover).

Do they have any pet peeves?

He is a pretty tolerant and patient person, but he can't stand queue-jumping. That, and weak coffee.

What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?

Novels, vintage posters and shoe polish.

What do they notice first in a person?

If their smile is fake or real.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?

He's got a pretty high pain tolerance, but he doesn't realize it. Pain he would rate as 5 would actually be 8 for most people. He seriously underestimates his own suffering.

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure?

He is not a fighter. He will fight if he has to, but his first instinct is to run away.

Do they come from a big family/are they a family person?

Loaded question for him. He is an only son and he loves his mom (even if she's "not quite there" sometimes). But his father gave him so many trauma, he's not sure he could be a good father to little Vin. He definitely wants to try though, even if they are not a typical family.

What animal represents them best?

A sheep. In the Chinese Zodiac, 羊 is an animal that shares a lot of common traits with him (mild-mannered and gentle but also wary and anxious). However, it can also be translated as ram or goat... a horned animal. You could say that Romeo has hidden horns.

What is a smell that they dislike?

The cologne his father used to wear. That smell will always be associated with fear.

Have they broken any bones?

Broken leg when he was a kid, and broken ribs because of his father...

How would a stranger likely describe them?

Unassuming and well put together. Seems to think more than he says.

Are they a night owl or a morning bird?

Neither. He just tries to get enough sleep.

What is a flavor they hate and a flavor they love?

He doesn't like radicchio, and he loves anything with lemon in it.

Do they have any hobbies?

Making limoncello, winetasting and collecting vintage posters. Oh, and cooking!

Boom, surprise birthday party! How do they react to surprises?

He'd be very moved if it comes from people he is close to. No one ever threw him a party or gave him a surprise gift.

Do they like to wear jewelry?

He used to wear a wedding ring but not anymore. As a whole, he doesn't like jewelry, he thinks it's gaudy.

Do they have neat or messy handwriting?

His handwriting is a narrow but legible scrawl.

What are two emotions they feel the most?

Guilt and shame.

Linen. If only it weren't so easily crumpled!

Is it easy for your character to tell someone "no" when they don't want to do something?

Typically, saying 'no' and standing his ground has always been an issue for Romeo. He's been drilled by his father to just obey orders without question.

He's getting better, first because he has to, but mostly because he has been given the time and opportunity to think about what he wants and set limits.

🏀 Does your OC have any skills that people wouldn’t expect them to have? Do they have a hobby or pass time that others would consider strange or weird? How did they learn this particular skill or pick up this hobby?

Romeo collects vintage posters (mostly of Monte Vista, but not only). You can catch a glimpse of some of them in his apartment.

He is very knowledgeable in wine: his family owns several vineyards and they used to make their own wine (see picture of their basement below, with all the necessary equipment). He knows all the Monte Vista winegrowers since he was a boy.

In addition, Zeke taught him how to make limoncello out of the lemons from the Pastorini garden (it’s actually really easy).

🍏 When your OC says “I had a bad day” what does that tend to mean? Is it really as bad as they’re saying or are they being a bit dramatic?

Romeo is the opposite of dramatic, he minimizes anything that would happen to him. When he has a shitty day, he stays silent. If he actually says that he had a bad day, you could interpret it like “I’ve had the worst day of my entire life.”

Oi happy valentine's! What are your OCs' reactions/plans to this day of 𝓇𝑜𝓂𝒶𝓃𝒸𝑒? 😸

Happy Valentine to you too, and thank you for the question! ^_^ I will again reply for the same usual suspects.

Well, the only one who is in a (sort of) relationship is Omar. Sort of because his relationship with Clara is long-distance, and it isn’t clear if she considers it exclusive. More on them in later updates. :)

Omar would very much like to take Clara on a romantic date for Valentine’s Day. He is smitten about her and would love nothing more than to make her happy. Unfortunately, they are not even living in the same country, and he is well aware that, in order to be worthy of someone like Clara, he has to distinguish himself. So yeah... currently, Valentine’s Day is slightly bittersweet to Omar as he wonders whom Clara spends it with.

Romeo is single (at the moment ;)) but if he had someone he cared about, he would invite him over and make a home-cooked dinner with fresh products from a real Italian deli (because the rest is blasphemy). He is a wonderful cook, food is his way of saying ‘I love you’. :)

Erik doesn’t care about Valentine’s day, except if his beloved cares. He would have to be reminded of the date. Then he would become increasingly nervous and would end up asking his mother what he should do and apply her recommendations to the letter (Flowers: check. Restaurant: check. Gift or chocolate: check.). He might bashfully ask Laurie for advice too. Just to have a guy’s take, you know.

Romance doesn’t play a big role in Laurie’s life right now, so he doesn’t really take notice of Valentine’s Day. But if he were with someone, his plans wouldn’t be to go on a date or a trip, but they would involve instead a bed, a lot of champagne and his undivided attention. He would keep it very intimate.
