QUOTE OF THE DAY Monday, April 3, 2023
"When Julius Caesar returned to Rome in 46 BC, among his triumphs was the first naumachia or mock sea battle (although the life-and-death struggle certainly was real enough to those who were forced to participate). It took place on a water-filled basin constructed in the Campus Martius, a low-lying area in a bend of the river Tiber." - Encyclopaedia Romana, A Court of Thorns and Roses

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔹⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🇬🇧 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The original mosaic is only partially preserved and was located in the remains of a Roman bathing facility, which probably belonged to an estate. It is located in the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt. Exactly this mosaic was completely reconstructed with the support of the city of Bad Vilbel in a Sicilian workshop. The Römerkastell Saalburg and the University of Cologne took over the scientific support. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔹 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🇫🇷⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ La mosaïque originale n’est que partiellement préservée et se trouvait dans les vestiges d’une installation de baignade romain, qui appartenait probablement à un domaine. @Regran_ed from @kishlb - #classic #boondocks #christmas #christmasorgy #christmasorgin #romanculture #saturnalia #jesus #christmastree #christmasdecor #rudolph #nutcracker #christmasgifts #christmascookies Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman pagan festival honoring the agricultural god #Saturn. Saturnalia celebrations are the source of many of the traditions we now associate with Christmas. WHAT IS SATURNALIA? Saturnalia, the most popular #holiday on the #ancientRoman calendar, derived from older farming-related #rituals of midwinter and the #wintersolstice, especially the practice of offering gifts or sacrifices to the gods during the winter sowing season. The #pagancelebration of Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture and time, began as a single day, but by the late Republic (133-31 B.C.) it had expanded to a weeklong festival beginning December 17. (On the #Juliancalendar, which the Romans used at the time, the winter solstice fell on December 25.) HOW THE ROMANS CELEBRATED SATURNALIA During Saturnalia, work and business came to a halt. Schools and courts of law closed, and the normal social patterns were suspended. People decorated their homes with wreaths and other greenery, and shed their traditional togas in favor of colorful clothes known as synthesis. Even #slaves did not have to work during Saturnalia, but were allowed to participate in the festivities; in some cases, they sat at the head of the table while their masters served them. Instead of working, Romans spent Saturnalia gambling, singing, playing music, feasting, socializing and giving each other gifts. Wax taper candles called cerei were common gifts during Saturnalia, to signify light returning after the solstice. On the last day of Saturnalia celebrations, known as the #Sigillaria, many Romans gave their friends and loved ones small terracotta figurines known as #signillaria, which may have referred back to older celebrations involving #humansacrifice. - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BrJoUh_nU6o/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wwvci57394vc

Ostia Antica, Rome - Italy Pompeian red is a red ocher of natural inorganic origin, composed of iron oxide. In ancient Rome it was known by the name of sinopsis, due to the city of Sinope. In Ostia Antica, as well as in other cities of ancient Rome, there are various examples of wall paintings in which this inorganic pigment is used. #pompeianred #redocher #rojopompeyano #ocrerouge #ostiaantica #roma #rome #ostia #discoverostia #visitostia #italy #italia #romanculture #romanempire #ironoxide #oxidodehierro #sinopsis #sinope #wallpainting #pinturamural #wildele #wildearthexplorer #history (presso Ostia Antica, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGDfz0fphVI/?igshid=1wk00h5sz4ep6

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... At the end of the second century AC, in a space that supposedly was a large funerary area, and a few meters from the Mediterranean, the Tarraco amphitheater was erected, which was then the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Citerior Tarraconensis, today Tarragona. This important construction, measuring 130x102 meters in an elliptical shape, and with a capacity for some 14,000 spectators, is today one of the locations of the World Heritage Site called "Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco", which proudly exhibits its history, past and culture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... #turismo #turisme #tourism #historia #history #culturaromana #romanculture #arquitectura #architecture #edificios #buildings #anfiteatro #amphitheater #tarraco #hispania #tarragona #igtarragona #instatarragona #ig_tarragona #cataluña #igcataluña #catalunya #igcatalunya #españa #spain #nibaldop (en Tarragona Coliseum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEHsioolH8l/?igshid=j2iwa7x9zu5j

#romanculture #ruins #old #architecture #ancient #ruinas #arqueologia #archeology #explorer #adventures #history #culturalheritage #travel #viajar #traveladdict #localguide #spain #españa #castillayleon #burgos #clunia (en Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1by3pvIAEM/?igshid=1u77jw4jduzh5

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🇬🇧 One of the most prominent attractions within the archaeological park is the Ancient Odeon. Comprised of carved limestone, the ancient Odeon is a beautiful amphitheater located in Paphos. It features twelve rows of stone seating in a half-circle surrounding a stage. The Odeon is built into the side of Fabrica hill. The Odeon was most likely still in use during the late 5th and even 6th century AD. • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #romanculture #greekculture #theatre #cyprus #paphos #zypern #art #kunst #archaeology #archäologie #romanempire #geschichte #museumlove #instamuseum #instamoment #outside #history #iloveart #instalife #instaart #imamusaller #instaphoto #artsy #culture #kultur #römer #romans #happy #summer #vergangenheitwirdsichtbar @enjoycypruss (hier: Archäologischer Park Pafos) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0vC8nsqQBS/?igshid=s9tjmz5kkhuq
