QUOTE OF THE DAY Monday, April 3, 2023
"When Julius Caesar returned to Rome in 46 BC, among his triumphs was the first naumachia or mock sea battle (although the life-and-death struggle certainly was real enough to those who were forced to participate). It took place on a water-filled basin constructed in the Campus Martius, a low-lying area in a bend of the river Tiber." - Encyclopaedia Romana, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Ostia Antica, Rome - Italy Pompeian red is a red ocher of natural inorganic origin, composed of iron oxide. In ancient Rome it was known by the name of sinopsis, due to the city of Sinope. In Ostia Antica, as well as in other cities of ancient Rome, there are various examples of wall paintings in which this inorganic pigment is used. #pompeianred #redocher #rojopompeyano #ocrerouge #ostiaantica #roma #rome #ostia #discoverostia #visitostia #italy #italia #romanculture #romanempire #ironoxide #oxidodehierro #sinopsis #sinope #wallpainting #pinturamural #wildele #wildearthexplorer #history (presso Ostia Antica, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGDfz0fphVI/?igshid=1wk00h5sz4ep6

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... At the end of the second century AC, in a space that supposedly was a large funerary area, and a few meters from the Mediterranean, the Tarraco amphitheater was erected, which was then the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Citerior Tarraconensis, today Tarragona. This important construction, measuring 130x102 meters in an elliptical shape, and with a capacity for some 14,000 spectators, is today one of the locations of the World Heritage Site called "Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco", which proudly exhibits its history, past and culture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... #turismo #turisme #tourism #historia #history #culturaromana #romanculture #arquitectura #architecture #edificios #buildings #anfiteatro #amphitheater #tarraco #hispania #tarragona #igtarragona #instatarragona #ig_tarragona #cataluña #igcataluña #catalunya #igcatalunya #españa #spain #nibaldop (en Tarragona Coliseum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEHsioolH8l/?igshid=j2iwa7x9zu5j

#romanculture #ruins #old #architecture #ancient #ruinas #arqueologia #archeology #explorer #adventures #history #culturalheritage #travel #viajar #traveladdict #localguide #spain #españa #castillayleon #burgos #clunia (en Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1by3pvIAEM/?igshid=1u77jw4jduzh5

Ordinary Romans could not afford such expense, so they decorated their homes with painted imitations of the luxurious yellow, purple and pink marbles. Painters became so skilled at imitating certain marbles that the large, rectangular slabs were rendered on the wall marbled and veined, just like real pieces of stone.

In Ancient Rome an archetypal classic Roman (ie, Latin) funerary monument for aristocrats. The classic example is the Tomb of the Scipiones, which housed the most distinguished mid-late Republican family. basically, it is a large funerary structure with decorated sarcophagi housing the actual remains of the dead (The Corelii Scipiones were somewhat unusual in not cremating their dead). The decorations, both painted and in relief, on the sarcophagi itself would often be somewhat restrained, and decorations on the walls would often be historical scenes or depictions of crucial moments in the life of the deceased (often political). The actual structure would house multiple generations, and would also include dining rooms for the living to hold "wakes" in their memory. During the Late Republic aristocratic tombs tended cluster around Rome, while during the imperial period they were often on their villa estates or around their ancestral hometowns.
