#365DaysOfVGM Day 107:
Absolute Freedom ~Gray~ (Romancing SaGa [2005])
Back when I was a much worse person, I somehow thought this track of all things was terrible. Nowadays, I like this the most out of all the playable protagonist themes, although Barbara’s still comes fairly close. Still hard to get over how my save file for the game on real PS2 hardware corrupted just as I was nearing the very end of my 1st playthrough, maybe I'll get the new remaster and start over someday.
"A pleasant Acoustic Guitar lies under the adventurous Flute, waiting for people to be blessed by the subtle String before it takes center stage later in the composition. Only traces of the original remain at its tail end, yet that's all it takes to retain its spirit, spread throughout all the land." Amateur "fantasy style" talk aside, I recommend listening to this if you haven’t already!
(Length before loop: Nearly 1.5+ minutes)

Please remember that we're only allowing extensions of 24 hours. If you'll need one, send an e-mail to [email protected] before the deadline gets here. Review: Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
SaGa games have always felt like the odd man out in the world of JRPGs and Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song is no exception that statement. SaGa games have always tried to be innovative, often times feeling like they’re prioritizing experimentation over making an enjoyable game, and Minstrel Song is one of them. The battle system is one of the more interesting features with the different elements such as durability points for weapons and life points for characters making many of the most basic battles feel like they’re a high-stakes encounter. The lack of structure in completing the main quest and side quests is a double-edged sword.

Reasons why Gray doesn't recognize Gian:
1. Gian is lying, and the two have never met. Gian was wandering around Melvir, desperately searching for someone competent he could foist Claudia onto so he could return to his actual job: being Bafal's most dashing damsel in distress
2. Gray and Gian have met, but Gray has legitimately forgotten. They both served in the imperial army for some time, and Gray did save his life. Gray eventually left the army for ~reasons~ and decided to become an adventurer, dying at some unspecified point not long after. Gray lost his memories after being resurrected, either forcefully after being trapped in purgatory or willingly. This would explain why he has no real area of specialization with his stats, despite being described as an established and competent adventurer and swordsman, and also why he is said to not be swayed by material wealth or plays to morality. Losing his memories also meant losing his desires along with them.
3. This has happened before and he is 100% fucking with Gian.

About
The gods created man and man created stories. The primordial creator Marda brought forth the land of Mardias. In ages past a mighty battle rocked this land, when Elore, the king of the gods, fought three malicious deities: Death, Saruin and Schirach. After a long and drawn-out struggle, Death and Schirach were sealed away and rendered powerless, with the final deity Saruin also trapped through the power of the Fatestones and the noble sacrifice of the hero Mirsa. Now 1,000 years have passed since that titanic battle. The Fatestones lie scattered across the world and the gods of evil are resurgent once more. Eight heroes set off on their own journeys, as if guided by the hand of fate. What tales will these adventurers weave across the vast tapestry of Mardias? You are the only one who can decide! The original Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song included many of the SaGa series trademark elements, such as the Glimmer and Combo mechanics and was considered to be the epitome of the series when it first released. The free scenario system that lets you create your own storyline remains at the core of the game, letting you select one of eight protagonists with completely different origins and backstories, then set off on a unique journey. This remastered edition has evolved in all areas, featuring upgraded high-definition graphics and numerous enhancements to improve playability. And for the first time ever, the game will be fully playable in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This makes it highly recommended for both fans of the original and newcomers to the SaGa series.
Key Features
Brand new localization in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. (English also included.)
Full high-definition graphical update.
Schiele, Marina, Monica, and Flammar can now be recruited.
Enhanced and more difficult bosses.
High speed mode.
Mini Maps.
New Game+ mode.
■ Staff Comments
Akitoshi Kawazu, SaGa Series General Director
“With the support of Red Art Games, we’re now able to release a new version of Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered that includes localization into French, German, Italian, and Spanish languages. We are finally able to grant this desire of our loyal fans! We know there’s a big SaGa fanbase and community in the west, so releasing a new localized edition of the game to more of our fans has long been a dream of mine. I hope to continue to fulfill the wishes of our fans, as well as creating opportunities for even more people to play the game.”
Masanori Ichikawa, SaGa Series Producer
“The opportunity for this release all began when Michael Binkowski (CEO, Red Art Games) and Romain Mahut (business development and communications manager, Red Art Games) contacted me directly. Thanks to them, a long-time dream of ours is coming true and I’m so grateful. From visiting the Red Art Games office in France to all the discussions we’ve had on this project, it’s been an amazing experience from start to finish, and I can’t wait for SaGa fans to get their hands on this beautiful game.”
Hiroyuki Miura, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered Producer
“Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered International is a title that allows players to enjoy a great many of the characteristic mechanics of the SaGa series, including the Freeform Scenario system, Glimmer, and Combos. The addition of new localization into French, German, Italian, and Spanish is particularly impactful for the freeform scenario. Now, players globally will be able to experience the story on an even deeper level, in their native language. I’m excited for more people to discover the SaGa series thanks to the additional language support and the physical release of the game. I’m delighted to be partnering with Red Art Games on this collaboration.”

Playing the Romancing SaGa - Minstrel Song - remaster for the first time, mostly blind. (Technically I had one playthrough, tried to grind for a while in an early area, got to a later area and realized that the monsters were way beyond me. I did NOT know how Event Ranks worked. So I stopped that one after about five hours. Seven hours in now, and doing much better.)
So far, Albert seems like a pretty typical shounen protagonist.  Young, excitable, loves his family, has an extremely obvious crush on his older sister’s betrothed... or maybe that last one’s just me. Anyway the game play is fun and I’m enjoying most of the lore I’ve learned. I’ll most likely have more to say when I get further in the game.
(On a personal note - the male characters so far in this game are nothing special to me. The ladies, on the other hand... I really like their designs.)

The Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remaster
Not gonna play it much for now because I'm playing the SaGa games in release order and I'm still playing through SaGa Frontier, but I tried out that Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remaster and it seems really good. Also, it's still really cool and kinda novel to have most of the series on Steam now.
