Greetings from Superintendent Terry Bailey:

                             Practical Steps in Dealing with Stress

How can we, as ministers, implement practical ways to deal with the stress that we experience in ministry? Jesus said in John 16:33, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (NKJV). (In this world, we will encounter stress, pressure, adversity, distress, trouble, crushing, squashing, squeezing).

A stressed-out worker said to her boss, "When this rush is over, I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. I've earned it, I deserve it, and nobody's going to take it from me.”

What are some practical steps you can incorporate into your ministry before you become stressed-out to the point of total burnout?

First, learn to come apart before you come apart. Jesus would withdraw and get alone with His Father in prayer. Sit at His feet, in His presence, just be still and know that He is God. I recommend that you find rest by diverting daily, withdrawing weekly, and abandoning annually. Set a time when you come apart so you don’t fall apart.

Second, when you take your stress, frustrations, anxiety, pressure, chaos, and emotional roller coaster to the Lord, leave it there with the Lord! 1 Peter 5:7 says, "...casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you" (NKJV). Worry is not going to change anything, so leave it in God's capable hands. We were not designed to carry heavy burdens, like a pack horse, so leave it with the Lord.

Third, your best medicines for stress are praise, laughter, proper positive thinking, and the joy of the Holy Spirit. Proverbs 17:22 teaches, "A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones" (NKJV). Romans 14:17 says, "...for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (NKJV).

Four, find an outlet to do something you enjoy, and don't feel guilty about it. We all need a break from the responsibilities and demands that come with the ministry. Break free from your stress through recreation, and it will give you a time to “re-create." Some possible outlets include gardening, crafts, movies, sporting events, motorcycles, mechanics, woodworking, hiking, walking, running, hunting, fishing, golfing, volunteer work, and helping others with good deeds.

Fifth, refuse to stay isolated! Get out of your shell, proactively make healthy friendships, and build upon those relationships. You cannot wait for others to make the first move. We are trending toward isolation in today's increasingly busy world. True friendships are rare, a treasure to be cultivated. Refuse to stay isolated.

You can implement these practical steps and find a way to deal with stress in ministry!!!
