things i would add to the poll if i had the option 😔:
fishing/hunting
weapon/armor/potion crafting and enchanting
unique in-universe card/board games (tw3 gwent, hfw machine strike, that fkn evil rollgoal game in twilight princess)
karaoke/pool/darts/arcade as its own category (separate from gambling option)
by "nonessential" i mean that these are minigames or sidequests or upgrades within the base game and dont necessarily need to be completed to move forward with the story!

(Opinion Anon) What does Dusk think of Rollgoal?
And for something similarly frustrating, what does Wind think of Sploosh Kaboom?
Dusk... did not think it was worth it. The point of fishing is to build patience? What does he want with a more effective lure, he's in it for the experience, not the results. That said it did seem to make Hena happy that he at least tried it, so... eh?
Wind didn't mind Sploosh Kaboom so much as he did the sound effects. Or rather, maybe he wouldn't have minded the sound effects so much if the guy doing them had been a bit more enthusiastic? There's only so many times he can take hearing the word "Splish..." announced in the most monotone voice possible before he starts sarcastically mocking it in his head

Do you have any thoughts on what kind of games hyrulean kids play?
Boy, do I
Keep in mind, I'm going to be going across games as I analyze Hyrule's kids. This isn't just going to be Breath of the Wild, or anything like that.
Our biggest source of entertainment in Hyrule is the presence of mini-games. There are a handful of them that are meant for adults—such as the Shooting Gallery in A Link to the Past, or the Horseback Archery range in Ocarina of Time. But plenty of others cater to, or are at least accessed by, children.
Note: While Link's Awakening doesn't take place in Hyrule, its contents are formed out of Link's memory in the Windfish's dream. Therefore, any games found in it are built of things Link has either encountered or enjoyed.
First, we have fishing.
Originally found in Link's Awakening, and then seen in other games since, we have the classic fishing game. On its surface, it's a simple concept; just fish.
However, this vital skill is turned into a competition in the Fishing Hole, where you can compare the size of your fish to others, making it a sport that attracts kids fortunate enough to live by the water.
Next, we have the Trendy Game, a claw machine minigame found in Link's Awakening.
This game is a little more ambiguous on here, since it doesn't appear anywhere else but Koholint. It does, however, attract both Link and Marin to it, with a gambling aspect and prizes available.
Moving onto debuts in Ocarina of Time, we have a lot of additions. There's bombchu bowling
The "Heart-Pounding Gravedigging Tour"
Diving games
And even gambling.
While the concepts of digging games and treasure chest gambling are hardly new concepts, having appeared in A Link to the Past, this is the first time we know that a child is allowed to partake in them, and that they aren't some Dark World pastime.
Kids are also known to make games out of slingshot shenanigans
Musical Simon Says
And even wrangling cuccos (a trend that no doubt started from parents trying to convince their kids to do farm work)
Skipping over Majora’s Mask due to it not being a Hyrulean game (which is unfortunate—there are so many festival pastimes!), we go to Wind Waker.
First, we have the cannon minigame, which exists out on Spectacle Island and is managed by Salvatore. While a cannon would usually be something only adults could play with, Salvatore’s whole demeanor with the game suggests a more childlike audience in mind.
Speaking of Salvatore, he also runs a much more accessible game on Windfall Island, one that’s infamously known for killing speedruns.
Sploosh-Kaboom, or as it’s more formally known, Squid Hunt.
This is a more battleship-esque game, relying on luck and careful placement of “bombs” in order to beat the game and get prizes. I, personally, have always loved playing this one.
Minigames aside, Wind Waker is one of the first games where we get to experience kids...being kids. And that brings us to the Killer Bees.
These guys act tough, and push Link into playing a combination of hide-and-seek and tag, implying a presence of BOTH of these games on Windfall Island.
In Twilight Princess, we see our first Board Game in Hyrule: Rollgoal!
This balance game was invented by Hena, and consists of carefully rolling a glass ball through a track without it hitting the ground. There are 8 unique tracks, but a total of 64 unique levels!
Other minigames in this title are adult-only, but Twilight Princess picked up where Wind Waker left off with its kids and their pastimes.
We see the return of the Slingshot, with dialogue that mentions children at every opportunity.
We also see an interest in swordplay in the Ordonian kids. Talo is by far the most enthusiastic, with a toy sword of his own but Beth and Malo both know enough about it to know the various techniques Link can use.
Along with bug collecting being a staple among Zelda games starting here.
And, although it’s hard to see here
Colin has a rocking horse made out of split logs!
Unfortunately, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks don’t offer much in terms of games for kids, their minigames requiring a boat, a train, or adult-level items, and their child NPCs being more sparse due to the DS’s limitations.
Skyward Sword isn’t much better, the entire game having a whole two kids.
A Link Between Worlds brings racing to the table, though; something we only could do as an adult in Ocarina of Time, while being coded to never let us win.
Hyrule Hotfoot, on the other hand, you could win. And so, we add footracing to the list of games Hyrulean kids can play.
An honorable mention goes out to Octoball Derby from Lorule.
And finally, we get to Breath of the Wild.
We have to make a handful of assumptions with it. Hyrule in BotW is a wreck, so we rarely ever get to see kids in the main part of the country. Old games that are now accessible only to Link could have once been a favored sport. Like Snowbowling!
This bowling-like game would have been played in the Tabantha region, groups of kids rolling up snowman-like snowballs in order to shove them down a hill. I actually have a post detailing how I think it would have gone.
Sand Seal Surfing, as well, would have been popular with Gerudo kids, as they jump across dunes to try to out-compete each other under the watchful eyes of their moms.
We also see Hyrulean kids dancing
Singing
Playing tag
Bug hunting
And even cooking!
Granted, not all of these count specifically as “games,” but they’re ways that the children of Hyrule entertain themselves, and I think that paints a wonderful picture of what their culture is like.

In all the Zelda games that I have played and replayed I have never had a greater enemy then Rollgoal in twilight princess. Maybe it's easier on the gamecube version but I am doing it on the Wii. So any helpful tips it would be appreciated. I have always tried to 100% twilight princess,(I have many times over if we ignore rollgoal) and rollgoal has forever been an issue. Wish me luck. :,)
I hate this minigame more then Ganondorf.

‘The Myahm Agana Shrine features a rather challenging ball-rolling maze similar to the Rollgoal minigame of Twilight Princess, but controlled entirely with the motion controls of the Wii U GamePad or the Switch's control options. Naturally, you can turn the whole maze over by flipping your controller upside-down, and letting the ball roll on the flat underside. That, or tilt the maze so that when the ball respawns, it's dropped into the final stretch rather than the start.’

Not really a spoiler for Breath of the Wild, but don’t read if you’d consider shrine puzzles spoilers.
There’s a shrine in Breath of the Wild that’s basically Rollgoal from Twilight Princess, but it seems unwinnable to me. I fucked up carefully navigating the ball to the end of the little maze only to drop it time and time again until my out of frustration I tilted the maze really fast and just punted the ball like a fooseball table...
It worked. This game is nice.

Whelp, I’m never getting the Frog Lure in this version, it’s way too hard to do Rollgoal with the motion controls, it was way easier in the GC version where you just had the joystick to til it
>Buys a fishing boat >Uses it only to grab a piece of heart off a rock
Aww Hena claps for you when you grab it
Shad’s just like “yeah sorry about that” then tries to justify being a dick...nice try
Just...gathering hearts, bugs, poes and upgrades
Speaking of upgrades, something I dislike about TP is how long the game makes you wait to get the final Quiver upgrade. In OoT, you get one from the Shooting Gallery in Kakariko and the next in Gerudo Valley. Except you can go to Gerudo Fortress and complete it before doing the Fire Temple so you can choose when you get it, making both very early-mid game (or early in the Adult segment). In MM, both are available to you as soon as you get the Bow from the first dungeon, with one in Clocktown and the other in Southern Swamp. In WW, you get the Bow from the Tower of the Gods and all you need to get both upgrades is the Skull Hammer which you get from the second trip to Forsaken Fortress, which is right after TotG. In TP though, the Bow is from the Goron Mines, both upgrades are from the STAR game. You need the Clawshot from Lakebed Temple to get the first one, which is fine. But the second you can’t get until you get the Double Clawshot, which isn’t until the end of the game. Meaning you have to save Midna, get the Master Sword, go to and do Arbiter’s Grounds, do Temple of Time, get to and do Snowpeak Ruins, and do the whole Sky Book + Ilia’s Memory quest before you get even get to the City in the Sky and then finish that awful dungeon, just to get the last Bow upgrade. The quivers in this game don’t even give you that many extra arrows, whereas WW lets you hold up to 99 arrows. On the other hand, the bomb bags have almost all of it’s upgrades available to you at once, with the Bombs right after Goron Mines and 2 bags in the Lake Hylia section, one from the Goron in the throne room and the other from Iza. And then if you do Iza’s minigame she gives you a bag that lets your other bags carry double the bombs. You don’t even need that many bombs in 1 playthru, but you do for arrows. What the heck.
What if Fyer accidentally shot you into the canyon of Gerudo Desert and Link died. how fuck up would that be.
“You’ll come with me...won’t you?” -Link’s face says “of course I will.”- ;_:
lol, the guy who runs the expensive store looks like he hates his life after Malo buys it and he has to work there
OoT = TP # whatever: the first half of Arbiter’s Grounds has you chase after 4 Poes that stole the flames off the torches that causes a door to close. No game before OoT and no other game besides TP has this as a thing. Oh, and like OoT, the last one uses a Kage Bushin no Jutsu and only one is the real one. AG is also desert+death themed so Shadow+Spirit temple.
Honestly? Mortal Draw’s a little OP, it OHKOs a lot of enemies in the game. And all you have to do is put your sword away and press A near an enemy.
Deathsword is p scary, it’s name isn’t tho
TBH I’d rather it leave behind a corpse than turn into a bunch of buzzing bugs
The Spinner’s kinda cool? Too bad it’s pretty useless outside of this dungeon. I can only think of a handful of places it’s useful outside, and they’re all just for items like heart pieces
Oh no..Stallord’s the boss of this dungeon....I hate this guy so much...
Why does Zant make that scary screech sound sometimes
Man he got some serious noodle hands
He has a deep voice and is usually calm, it’s only when he removes his helmet during his breakdown does he get childish and have the high-pitched squealing but HW just pretends he never had the deep voice and acts like he’s always just a child. I don’t like his characterization in HW.
....that...was was easier than all the other times I did the first phase. Let’s see if I still have trouble with Phase 2.
Hmmmmmm I wonder why I didn’t get a Heart Container? Hmmm I wonder why it’s head is still there?
RIP Link, death by being pushed off the platform and breaking his spine. No seriously, how did he even survive that.
The Heart Container was in the....sword Zant put in it’s head? Okay
All that work only to find a broken mirror
Ayyy there he is, my Gerudo King
“He was the leader of a band of thieves who “ Bu
-Sound of a leather glove-
Of course, it makes no sense that he has the Triforce of Power when in this timeline, they never opened the Sacred Realm...
RIP Acient Sage of Water....his face/facemask got left behind?
“His abiding hared and lust for power turned into the purest malice...” Ayyyy you’re right, just look at what happened to him in BotW... :(
