I survived my first "normal contact" roller derby scrimmage after passing my minimum skills test! I was so fucking scared cause apart from like 4 people everyone else there plays on a national level. In the end, I love practicing with seasoned players, cause I feel like I learn so much more. Embarrassing myself or being knocked around are risks I'm willing to take. But it feels like everyone still treated us newbies a bit kinder, which might be good at this point.
To sum up, I got one penalty, got away with another and got to be a butt with one of my idols, which might have been the easiest blocking I've ever done cause they're so talented. Cheers to more good times and getting better.

Well, I got....a conditional pass! My plow stops were suboptimal and I need to stop worrying about hurting other people in the pack and just loosen up and skate. But I passed. I’m a qualified roller derby skater now. It’s weird, I thought I’d be more excited and elated about it, but I have such mixed emotions. Next week I’m still going to go and skate, just with everyone else as well. I haven’t magically changed or anything, but well. I accomplished something that not a lot of people have done, I put a bunch of effort in and come a long way from where I started.
In 2019, a week or so before I started fresh meat for the first time, I got my gear and tried it on for the first time.
Tumblr media
A lot has changed since then. I got fatter. I grew out my sidecut and my dyed hair (it may come back at some point). I’ve replaced my knee pads (same model though), and figured out how to properly wear my elbow pads. I got surgery, I got tattoos, and I learned how to skate. It’s been a hell of a journey.

lore dump for the Cult of the Neon Blade incoming
Archite Yr’isha got bored of doing normal Hot Wych Shit one day, somehow got her hands on a bunch of ancient Terran sci-fi sports horror vids, and became obsessed with roller derby in particular
a few unsuccessful attempts at styling her arena after this sport later, she gets a very un-Drukhari-like idea, one that, if it works, will be so fucking efficient at extracting pain from hideous little willing mon’keigh, she’ll never have to enslave anyone again
her first few roller rinks of doom suck, and nobody shows up, so she contracts some Slaaneshi Imperial Fists to build the coolest and deadliest one ever
these madlads go above and beyond, and not only build a really cool arena full of death traps, they use the Webway to link it to every world with a sufficiently large and bloodthirsty population so Yr’isha doesn’t even have to go out recruiting; this arena is soon dubbed the Dreadwheel
a few tournament seasons later, the Coven of the Bladed Wheel invades the Dreadwheel, turning injured contestants into biomechanical horrors and muscling their way into being the medics/pit crew of Yr’isha’s games
the Bladed Wheel, in these incidents, created one of the first recurring fighters in the Dreadwheel, Koschei, who’s basically a roller derby version of Frankenstein from Death Race 2000 (except they actually do rebuild him from hamburger; the myth is that he’s just replaced every season)
as of M42, Yr’isha not only enjoys a reasonable amount of fame and fortune in Commorragh, she’s got a criminal network across the Imperium, constantly recruiting fresh meat for the grinder

I feel sorta disloyal, but I’m trying out a different roller derby league today.
The practical reason is that - the city I live in doesn’t have roller derby, so I have to go to a nearby city either way. The one I went to initially was just the first one I found googling, and my therapist is there anyways, so I figured eh alright, this is the convenient option. But actually the other city is a little closer, so in a way more convenient for me.
The positive reason is - I have gotten very excited about roller derby and skating in general, but there aren’t any public skating rinks here, so the best way to get more time on the skates is to join a second league so I get four opportunities per week to skate instead of just two.
The slightly less positive reason is I’m a bit annoyed at some aspects of how my original league is run. I got the chance to play in two scrimmages, and I had a fuckin blast, and only after that second scrimmage did one of the trainers passive-aggressively hint that actually I shouldn’t have been in the scrimmage. Overall they’re super strict about what you’re allowed to do. Some trainers even more so than others. And like yes, it’s a dangerous sport, but there are ways to more safely do stuff and it feels a bit stifling
…..
Anyways I didn’t finish writing this. But I went and did the thing, and it was a beginner training cuz it’s fresh meat day, but it was still a lot of fun. I absolutely will get a chance to do more scrimmages there. Well, as long as we get enough people interested. Cuz at the first place the issue is the team is too big and too focused on the official Bundesliga games. The second place, it’s almost too small. They said only 8 people regularly show up to practices. Ideally you need 15 for a game. Theoretically you only have 5 on the track at once, but it’s a damn hard sport so you need time to catch your breath.
The way my initial team talks about it all they say they’re just focused on safety. I shouldn’t play in scrimmages because I don’t have enough control over all the finer points of skating yet. Which, I’m sure that is a real part of it. The new team has a different perspective though - they think the initial team is just very focused on funneling people into the Bundesliga games. For now I’m happier to go to the second team where they’re more chill overall. In fact, I’m allowed to do both, so I’ll just do that for now

10 Reasons Why Tampa Is The Best Place Ever
Introduction
Tampa, FL is a great place for families, young professionals and retirees. It's full of culture and history, and there are endless things to do here. You'll never be bored if you move here. Here are ten reasons why Tampa is the best place ever:
Tumblr media
In The Top 10 For The Best Weather
The weather here is great. Tampa has a humid subtropical climate, and summer temperatures average in the high 80s to low 90s (even hotter in July and August). Winter temperatures average in the mid 50s to low 60s.
Easy To Get To
Tumblr media
Tampa is a major hub for air travel in Florida. If you're flying in, you'll land at Tampa International Airport (TPA), which is the second busiest airport in the state. Additionally, Tampa is a major cruise ship destination and has four ports where they dock: Channel side, Port of Tampa Westshore Marina, Port of Tampa Cruise Terminal #1 and #2.
There are many ways to get around Tampa! In addition to driving your own vehicle or using an Uber/Lyft or taxi service, there are buses and trains available as well. The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority operates bus routes throughout the city; Amtrak offers train service between TPA and other cities such as Orlando International Airport (MCO).
Have Great Neighborhoods
Tampa has many great neighborhoods.
Bayshore is a beautiful area, with lots of great restaurants and shops. If you're looking for a place that's close to the water, Seminole Heights is a nice neighborhood just north of downtown Tampa. SoHo (South Howard) is also popular among young professionals who love to walk around their streets or enjoy the local bars and restaurants together. Carrollwood, Westchase and Town n Country are all further out from downtown but still offer plenty of shopping opportunities as well as access to major highways leading into Tampa city limits so you can get where you need quickly if need be!
Palm River-Clair Mel is another good option if you want somewhere quiet yet still within reach of everything else in Tampa Bay area when needed - this location offers lots more greenery than some other parts nearby but still has easy access via I-75 which makes it easy for commuters too!
Schools Are Good
There are great schools in Tampa, both public and private.
Whether you’re looking for a top-ranked school or a good charter school, Tampa has it all.
Great Fresh Local Food
Tampa has a lot of great places to eat, but you can only get the freshest and most authentic local food by visiting one of Tampa's many farmers markets. There, you'll find all kinds of fresh produce, meats and seafood as well as prepared local food to take home with you. If shopping isn't your thing (or if you just don't have time), check out some of Tampa's great food trucks instead! And if a sit-down meal is more your thing, try one of the city's many ethnic restaurants—there are plenty to choose from in every neighborhood.
Sports Teams Are Good And You Can See Them In Person
Tampa has a long-standing tradition of being home to great sports teams. The Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Lightning are both great, and you should go see them play. They’re not just good for Florida, either: the Rays have won two World Series titles in their 25 years as an MLB team, while the Lightning have made it to Stanley Cup Finals twice since 2010. If football is more your speed, then don’t worry—the Buccaneers also provide plenty of fun! And if hockey isn’t quite your thing… well then how about soccer? The Rowdies play at Al Lang Stadium in downtown St Petersburg every year from March through October (except for when they go on hiatus). Or maybe roller derby is more up your alley? In that case you can check out Team Tampa Roller Derby or Hot Wheels Highwaymen Roller Derby!
There Is A Lot To See And Do Here
Tampa is a city with a lot to offer. There are museums, theaters, and other attractions that will keep you entertained throughout your stay. Theaters are also close to the city center, so if you’re looking for something different to do after dinner or to take your mind off of things during an afternoon stroll through Florida’s urban jungle, then we have something for you!
If you want somewhere near the airport where you can catch up on your shows or movies before heading back home again then look no further than Bloomingdale Park Theater! It’s only 10 minutes away from Tampa International Airport and offers great service with seating for over 200 people at any given time so that everyone gets a good view without having to crane their neck around someone else who might be taller than them (or shorter).
The Big Attractions Are Close By
Disney World
Busch Gardens
Museum of Science and Industry
There's a lot to see and do in Tampa, but you'll have to make time for the big attractions. These are some of our favorites:
The Beaches Are Nearby And We Get Early Warnings About Bad Weather.
If you're looking for a place to live that has beaches, Tampa is the place for you. With its many miles of beautiful coastline and clear waters, it's no wonder that Tampa is considered one of the best places in Florida to spend time outdoors. In fact, most people who live in Tampa will tell you that they rarely spend their free time inside. Instead, they'll be out enjoying the sun on one of our many beaches!
One thing to keep in mind when moving here: while it may seem like there's never any rain in this city (and we do get plenty), sometimes there are storms coming from other regions which can cause heavy winds and rain here as well. Fortunately for us though, this typically only happens once every few years; so just keep an eye on those early warnings from your local news station if you don't want any surprises!
Tampa Is A Great Place For Families And Young Professionals.
Tampa is a great place for families and young professionals. There are many parks and green spaces to take your children, so they can have fun while you unwind after a long day of work. It’s also easy to get around the city, which makes it easier for you to enjoy the many activities that Tampa has to offer.

New Video! - How To Mold Your Mouthguard
I got a fresh mouthguard and decided to make a mouthguard molding tutorial! But I did not re-read the instructions before filming and tbh sometimes you overestimate how much you remember how to do something 😂

Number of weeks in a row someone has asked me about my skates: 2
We've reached the all contact all the time portion of our derby learning journey.
I'm once again reminded that I'm actually really good at hitting people and kind of hit like a brick, and much like a brick, I'm not easy to move when hitting. It's a nice feeling, makes me all smug and proud of myself.
One of the drills was dropping down into a nice blocking position with a friend, which is basically squats in skates. Good times, but god does it get to you after a while.
We also introduced the element of the jammer, both with two blockers and three, a brace. I can do both, but jamming will always be my jam. Coming up to people and pushing through them is a great feeling, and this was without trying to juke around them and getting fancy.
I did do the laps today. Only 19, which like, goddamn I need to work on my cardio and endurance, but hey, I lasted all five minutes.
Also our social media person took pictures of me today, I'm going to have to send them some words about derby and why I do it and all that.
It's going to be something along the lines of talking about how roller derby is the first place I've found that has accepted and embraced every part of me. I can be fat, queer and trans and still be accepted as an equal athlete to everyone else. It's a sport where your differences just make you stronger. It's pretty great.
