thinking of making the Roland Gaia SH-01 my first ever synthesizer. all the other ones I've looked at so far cost way too much (I am going to die mad about the prices of vintage Roland and other vintage synths). it can be found for around $400 used, $500 new, has sliders and knobs like I want (to avoid the dreaded menu diving), it's small and portable but still has a nice keypad and an octave control, an arpeggiator, up to 64-voice polyphony. my favorite part is that it has three engines built in, allowing you to triple stack and build up some huge and complex sounds. for its size and price this thing is ridiculously powerful. the only thing it doesn't really have is a drum machine, but you could probably create some drum sounds with it if you wanted to.

hhhh. I just wanna get my hands on it already. watching videos isn't enough anymore I need to twiddle some knobs and push some sliders up and down so I can make wubwubs

Solving MIDI loop problems with the Roland GAIA SH-01

I’ve been setting up my studio this week after a long time rebuilding things. Got a new-old MOTU Timepiece AV and MOTU 896HD off eBay to serve as the MIDI and audio interfaces, and aside from a dead headphone jack on the 896HD (grr, but a sadly common issue), they’re working well. 

Using my quite-old Kurzweil MIDIBoard as the master controller going into Logic Pro X, with a small pile of softsynths plus two hardware keyboards, the Gaia and a Korg DW-8000. 

Got the last of the cables I needed to connect everything: The Gaia directly into my Mac via USB, and the DW8000 via old-school MIDI/audio cables. 

Set up a test project, and created a new External Instrument track using the External Instrument plugin for the Gaia. 

Right off the bat, something weird started happening. The output lights on the MIDI Timepiece all started flickering, and the Gaia’s audio input channel in Logic showed a weird, constant amount of audio that bounced up and down. Plugging in headphones, there was definitely a weird, low rumble. 

Thanks to this post on the LogicProHelp forum, I diagnosed that the Gaia’s soft MIDI Thru was looping back on itself, so I disabled it. 

For the sake of sanity, I’m going to avoid using the Gaia’s built-in USB interface for now, and go old-school with MIDI and audio cables. 

Though the next question awaits: Integrating iPad synths via Studiomux. Watch this space.

GAIA Ø FAZ has 16 audiovisual presets that generates displacement textures, abstract geometric shapes, glitch based textures, processed Kinect data and waveforms by capturing MIDI notes, audio frequencies and note color data coming from Roland’s GAIA SH-01 Synthesizer in realtime.

We programmed GAIA Ø FAZ with Quartz Composer and VDMX. To capture the color data from the musical notes coming from the synthesizer, we developed a QC based VDMX plugin. The plugin converts all the received MIDI notes into color data. We used the color music scale from DD Jameson (Color Music Book,1844) as a reference. Also, we converted MIDI notes into numerical values to animate our visual compositions. For capturing waveforms we used Interactive Shader Format FFT color lines inside VDMX.

This video contains some of the excerpts we recorded during the programming process of GAIA Ø FAZ Audio Visual Synthesizer. For the future, we are planning to program/develop more displacers and geometric compositions for our visual presets.
