“The Cape Verdean Blues” by the great #HoraceSilver was recorded on both October 1 and 22, 1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Horace on piano, #WoodyShaw on trumpet, #JoeHenderson on tenor, #BobCranshaw on bass, #RogerHumphries on drums and #JJJohnson on trombone. This is a #MusicMattersJazz 33 RPM reissue although I have a blue labeled UA copy as well. This is probably my favorite Horace Silver session Mainly because of my love for the tune “The African Queen”. As Horace stated in the liner notes, “’The African Queen’ was inspired by some African folk music which I was introduced to by my good friend Pierre Billon from the Ivory Coast, French West Africa.” This piece seems to make it on to a lot of my playlist these days. I think it’s Joe Henderson’s solo which transcends you into that feeling of him serenading an African Queen with honor with Lex Humphries accenting each note and then Woody Shaw’s solo just putting the icing on the cake. Such a beautiful song full of great solos. My second favorite piece of this session is the tune “Nutville” which Horace says, “because the harmonies in the tune and the voicing sound kinda nutty.” JJ Johnson’s opening solo followed by Woody Shaw’s do seem kinda nutty. Joe Henderson solo comes in kinda crazy, but an overall powerful tune which I love. This is no longer offered on the Music Matters Jazz website, but @BlueNoteRecords may be releasing this on their next set of Classic Series releases. Hopefully so, but if you can find a decent playing Liberty copy I’d jump on it. Have a BLESSED rest of the day. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTzqdDPpnYI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Horace Silver Quintet - Pretty eyes - at Antibes Jazz Festival, July ... #HoraceSilver (piano) #CarmellJones (trumpet) #JoeHenderson (tenor sax) #TeddySmith (acoustic double bass) #RogerHumphries (drums)  "Assembling with sometimes furious vigor short phrases carried to a high point of rhythmic exacerbation, Silver treats the piano above all as a percussion instrument, but the composer is even greater than the instrumentalist: his themes are imposed by their accent of violence, their color both harsh and heady, and he excels at organizing in duration, division and punctuation the interpretations of a group that he has just judiciously renewed by calling in particular on Joe Henderson, a tenor sax inspired by both by Coltrane, Rollins and Yusef Lateef, and who seemed to us to be the only revelation of the evening."
