Walang Aray: Isang Stream-of-Consciousness Review

Hindi ako bubuo ng seryosong essay para sa Tumblr, at alam ko na nagwakas na ang SYLD para sakin, pero hindi siya tama sa espirito ng araw.

Ang Walang Aray, galing sa utak ni Rody Vera ay isang nakakatuwa't nakakaaliw na musikal tungkol sa ika-19 siglo ng Pilipinas na nasa gitna pa ng pamumuno ng Espanol, ang kanilang simbahan at ang kolonyal administration.

Ito ay naguumpisa sa pag-ibig at natatapos sa pag-ibig, ang sentrong magkasintahan sina Julia, artista sa bayan niya at si Tenyong, isang rebeldeng Katipunan.

Ang musika, pagkakanta at matulas na pagsusulat ng lirika, kasama pa ang kanilang pagsayaw at matalinong choreo? Ako ay nahulog na. Ang paggawa ng set ay talagang nakaka-engganyo. Hindi ko kayang mabuod ang lahat na nangyari, siya'y masiyadong mabigat para sa hindi pa tatlong oras na palabas. Alam ko lang na hindi ako makakahintay sa cast recording.

Itong musikal ay nababalanse ang pagiging nakakatuwang komedya at isang trahedyang makakasira sa puso. Siya'y puno ng luha, kung ito ay dahil sa kanyang mahusay na biro o sa mga sandaling yugto na nakakakilabot at nakakalungkot. Higit sa lahat, ito ay tungkol sa rebolusyon ng Pinas, ng mga Katipunan, para sa kanilang kalayaan at sa kalayaan ng kanilang minamahal sa mga Espanol. Lahat nito ay nasa ilalim ng mga magaling na pisikal na komedya, paggamit ng tropes ng telenovela, at siyempre, ang natural na karisma ng mga nag-aarte sa ibabaw ng entablado.

Some references I did for... Mostly myself, but maybe some others, too. Mostly just me. Notes and explanations under the cut!

EYES.

His eyes have freckles! Four in his right eye, three in his left. Not to get too sappy on main, but this is low-key based on a friend of mine from high school. Her name was Katie, my youngest brother adored her after she spent an entire parent-teacher conference playing with him (she was part of the student council and had to be there; I was at home, little brother was too young to be left with us), and she had big brown eyes with freckles in them. I always thought they were really pretty. Plus, she had a sunny disposition that is pretty similar to young Braig’s, so, it fits to me. 

Then the two painted eyes on the right: Top is normal. Warm Braiggo eyes. The one underneath is a personal touch. I like to think that, since Vapaad is a form that involves tapping into the dark side, if you fall into it too long, you might get traces of gold. Just a little bit. Enough to make your eyes shine. 

SCAR.

Not his only scar, but his most prominent. This is the one he gets from General Tessk on Tassish/Gale. He’s got a decent bit of hyperpigmentation going on, so the scar is darker than the rest of his skin. It didn’t heal right for a number of reasons, including a lack of medicine available, Braig’s inability to heal it after the fight (both because of exhaustion and Vapaad), the fact that the saber blade had already mostly cauterized it, and the fact that it itched and Braig picked at it a lot. By the time he got home and into bacta, it had already scarred over. Given that some characters, like Anakin and Evan Peil, still have scars, I can guess pretty solidly that bacta doesn’t heal scars. 

He’s got some nasty nerve damage there. He can’t feel a thing  in the scar tissue itself, and he never will. It’s dead. Early on, it almost felt kind of... Static-y? But he’s not sure if that was the actual nerves or just his body reacting to a complete lack of sensation. He underwent some minor surgery after getting back to the temple to let him have full range of motion of his neck and jaw again. He still scratches it sometimes, but it’s healed over now. 

He gets used to it.

TEETH.

He has really pointy eye teeth. This is something Rodi and I decided way back when kiddo was just a concept. Then we saw this old vine of a dude with chickens and just.

Yup.

Those are the teeth.

(And, while he likes to think of himself as polite and refined, he will bite if he thinks he has no other option.)

[As an aside: This set of references made me really mad because it’s EASILY THE BEST PAINTING I’VE EVER DONE and I CAN’T USE IT FOR ICONS AS IS. Oh well.]

HAIR.

A guide to his hairstyles over the years, and the progression of his braid. His hair is very thick and a little wavy, and it’s technically black, but. I wanted the linework to be visible, so dark brown it is. 

Top left is youngling/initiate Braig’s hair. Think little crecheling baby. Complete with the little section of hair that will become a braid, and the white band the babies get to signal purity and the beginning of their lives as Jedi. 

Top right is young padawan Braig, so like. 13-ish. Add on the yellow band to signify he’s started his training as a padawan, the yellow bead for weapons training, the white for healing, and someone somewhere made a post I’ll have to find headcanonning little Jedi starbird medallions on the end of braids that I really likes, so, there’s his. 

Bottom left is senior padawan Braig, so, 16-17. This is when he starts tying the top part of his hair back (it was half his idea, half Boone’s), where he gets the wooden bead from Ta’ule (”From one historian to another”), as well as the red band to show he’s a senior padawan/he’s graduated class studies. He also moves the yellow band to be over top of the beads rather than just underneath. 

Bottom left is adult Braig! (Think mid 20′s and onward.) Lots of hair on this boy. No braid, either - either it’s cut off when he’s knighted, or he cuts it off when the Order falls to avoid detection. The top part of his hair is pulled back into a bun now, and the bottom is left loose. He keeps it brushed and well-maintained, but. When you live like he does, you’re bound to get scruffy.

Camus for the meme

Trick question, Camus was never playable. As Camus. ...Except for that one time in Fire Emblem BS (so there was one point, in time, where Camus was only playable for a few hours a day, when an actual real life satellite was in range)

But, let’s fold this all in together and answer for the class.

Character: As Camus, I found him pretty forgettable as the standard “worthy opponent, soldier who’d die for king and country.” I suppose it comes with the territory of being the first of an archetype, where you don’t get the deconstructions like Eldigan or Bryce, or the ones who get more screen time like Gale and Xander, or the ones who just mash go on that “sad feels” button to wring every bit of emotional catharsis like Mustafa. But apart from just the standard banter during the fight, and some post battle mourning, Camus left very little impression on me. Even as Sirius, while, from an outside perspective, we can laugh at his Char Anzable inspired design, he’s a bit more interesting in his masked hero persona, coming to fix one last mess in his homeland before vanishing from the pages of history, but otherwise also pretty rote.

But, what truly makes his story unique and interesting, and why I consider the Camus/Nyna/Hardin love triangle one of the most interesting tragic love stories in the franchise, is his second life in Valentia as Zeke, and his second love in Tatiana. Once again, his role is pretty rote, but, in the context of his former life as head of the Sable Knights (as well as his playable status allowing us some emotional catharsis of watching him fulfill Rudolf’s wishes, even if that meant betraying and killing him), it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting, how he’s going through the motions even if he doesn’t realize, the slow unlocking of his memories, and how much that shakes up the good life he and Tatiana have established, together. Sirius’s last hurrah in Archanea wouldn’t be half as interesting without knowing his return to his new home in Valentia.

In summary, 3/10 for Camus, 6/10 for Sirius, 8/10 for Zeke.

Unit: 6/10. The standard “good prepromote” problem. A fine, serviceable unit in his own right, probably top of his class in both FE3 and Gaiden. But, especially exacerbated in FE12 and Echoes, noticeably not THE best, with serious weaknesses in Defense that aren’t offset his only slightly above average offense. To varying degrees, Mathilda, Rody, and Cecille all outpace him, not to mention all the units who, while not sharing his class, still fulfill his role in the team. He carries until everyone’s caught up, but, while he can certainly keep pace, he can rarely catch up.

IV. Rocos Insurances

Two weeks after, Leni received nothing from Rocos Insurances confirming her hiring. She knew she didn't stand a chance to make it. She decided to just continue searching for jobs the next weeks.

"Ate, nakakuha ka ba ng trabaho sa Rocos?" Natalia asked while she was watching the television with her sister.

"Hindi ako pinalad e." She replied with the bad news. "Pero wag ka mag-alala. Makakahanap rin ako ng trabaho tapos mabibili ko na lahat ng gusto mo." She poured in some positive thoughts.

"So kamusta naman pala yung school mo?" Leni asked. "Mmmm. Okay naman po. Wala namang masyadong bago." Natalia replied.

"Ay! Meron pala. May bumisita sa school sabi ng teacher namin isa daw yon sa major donators? Di ko matandaan basta. Ang bait niya. Sabi niya ang talino ko daw and ang cute cute ko daw tapos binigyan niya ako nito." She pulled out her notebook from her bag and showed Leni the three star stamp that she got.

"Wow! Ang galing naman ng little Natalia! Napakatalino at cute mo talaga." She agreed. "Ano bang pangalan nung donator na yan?" She asked.

"Di ko po matandaan e..." Natalia looked so troubled as she struggled to recall his name. "Pero mabait siya tapos pogi. Para ngang bagay po kayo." She teased.

"Ano?" Leni chuckled with the idea.

Her phone rang, she had to attend to the call.

Leni: Hello?

Person: Hello. Good afternoon, is this miss Leni?

Leni: Yes, speaking. Ano pong kailangan nila?

Person: Yes. Hello. This is Michelle from Rocos Insurances. We would like to inform you that you have a scheduled interview for Friday afternoon at 2PM. Are you available at the said time?

Leni panicked and started to hyperventilate with the news she just heard. The lady on line informed her about her interview.

Leni: Yes! Yes. I'm free on Friday po.

Person: Great. So we'll see you on Friday, miss Leni. Thank you.

Leni: Yes. Thank you. Thank you!

She dropped the line a squealed in excitement and happiness.

Friday came, Leni prepared herself for the callback at Rocos. She tried not to get bothered about the fact that she is about to see Bongbong Marcos again.

She was asked to go to building C of Rocos for her interview, she had her last interview with Bongbong at Building A.

"Miss Leni?" The assistant called and guided her to the office.

She was a bit relieved not to see Bongbong waiting for her at the boss' table.

"Have a seat." The employer offered. She took a seat and greeted him politely.

"So Leni, right?" He began with a smile. She felt a bit comfortable with him than when she was being interviewed by Bongbong.

"I'm Rodrigo Duterte. Productions and Quality control department board of director." He introduced and shook her hand. "Pleasure to meet you po, sir." She smiled back.

"So... I asked the HR to call you back because there is a job hiring slot for secretary assistant. I heard you were applying for an executive assistant position last time, tama ba?"

"Ah. Yes, sir."

"Yeah. So I was wondering if you're interested in this position?" He asked.

"Ay opo, sir. It would be so fine. I mean, I could work on any position or any related position. I'm grateful po." She replied.

He began to explain to her the purpose of her callback and how he felt the potential in her despite of the fact that she was an undergrad. She threw in some questions for clarifications after his discussion with her.

"Sir, if you don't mind, may i just ask if you are anyway related to Mr. Marcos po?" She asked as she began to feel at ease to ask such questions.

"Bongbong...? Bongbong Marcos?"

"Yes, sir." She confirmed. "Oo. He's the board director of the Strategic Marketing department. Bakit? Do you know him?" He asked.

"Ah hindi po. May interview po kase ako sakanya last time.. Naisip ko lang po if related po ba ito doon..."

"Ah, ininterview ka pala niya last time." He pointed out. "I saw you last time at building A at the elevator area... Pero your callback is not related to your interview with Bongbong. It's another department." He clarified.

She felt more relieved that her hiring is slightly distant and not related to Bongbong.

"Didn't you make it to his department?" He asked. She chuckled. "Hindi po e."

He wasn't very surprised though. "He's one of the most feared board director in this firm. Gina Lopez is his female version. Strikto talaga sila pero sobrang skilled and smart. Don't get too bothered with that." He explained. "You'll be under my department, anyways. I don't like scaring people under my department so... You'll be fine." He chuckled making her feel at ease being hired under him.

"Thank you po, sir. Medyo nabunutan ako ng tinik." She chuckled with him.

He dialed his secretary to come in. "May schedule ba ako ngayong araw?" He asked.

"Uhm... Wala naman po sir. Review lang po para sa project four." She replied. "Okay. Reschedule that tomorrow morning. Thanks." He requested and stood up from his seat.

"Leni." He called and asked her to follow him for her short orientation.

Usually, orientation are administered by other minor employees but Rody has been the nicest board director in Rocos that he prefers orienting the new employees he hired by himself.

He opened the powerpoint and began the orientation by introducing to Leni the bosses of the Rocos.

He informed her about the groundbreaking professional achievements and academic background of the big bosses and it just bewildered Leni.

And so on...

Soon then, Leni was informed about the day she can begin to work.

"What can I say? See you next week and welcome to Rocos." Rody gave her a warm welcome before allowing her to go.

Leni began to work the following weeks. She managed to adjust and adapt the new workplace with benefit of working under Rody's department. She was able to adjust well since Risa was hired as an executive secretary which Leni is under to and they became good friends.

So far, her performance in the company was satisfactory. She didn't give Rody any reason to regret her hiring.

As much as it was unlikely for Bongbong and Leni to cross paths, it was inevitable not for Bongbong to discover her being part of Rody's department.

Bongbong has been trying so hard to pretend that he doesn't give a single damn about Leni but then, there are several instances that he just find himself staring blankly at places and thinking about her. He felt like his ego was being damaged with the thought of her.

"Bongets!" Martin called his attention as he noticed him discreetly staring at Leni from the outside of the conference room through the glass doors. Martin traced his sight and gave him a smirk.

"Hooked ka yata diyan kay hospital girl, huh?" He teased and chuckled. "Huh? Of course not. Anong hook? Tsaka I slept with her already. I don't sleep with the same woman twice." He denied but Martin knew he was into her.

"I know! But you are into her. Kahit sabihin mong gusto mo lang siya i-kama, iba naman ang sinasabi ng mata mo." Martin laughed. Bongbong rolled his eyes.

"Martin. There is no such thing as into her for me. I just come for fun. That's how we live." He bragged and made a side smile as he discreetly looked back at Leni — his face pulled out to show no interest in her.

He knew to himself that he finds Leni extremely interesting and attractive but he didn't want to take in that fascination of her. He tried his best to shrug it off and just see her as how he sees the other girls.

Leni and Rody became closer as she always stood by his side in his office. They had the chance to exchange short conversations that eventually turned into sensible ones.

Their humors matched easily. They both love local things, they love donuts, they love coconut foods, they both have a tender love for their families and they both are sympathetic kind of persons. Rody aimed to bring out the best in her as he has always admired her unique beauty and perspective in life.

One afternoon, Rody called Leni in his office.

"Hello sir, may kailangan po ba kayo?" She asked — ready to do commands from him.

He handed her a folder of projects for photocopying. She immediately had them photocopied and returned to him quickly.

"Great. Great. Thanks." He handed her another folder and didn't mention what to do with it.

"Ipapa-xerox ko rin po sir? Ilang copy po?" She asked. He smiled. "No."

She felt bothered. She didn't know what she is supposed to do with it. "Uuh...?"

"Buksan mo" He told her as he felt her sincere cluelessness.

She curled her forehead for a moment in curiosity before she opened the folder.

Are you free tonight?

A piece of paper tucked in the folder said. A small smile grew in her lips as her cheeks began to turn pink. She looked at him for an explanation without verbally asking him.

"Ikot mo." He felt her blushing.

She turned it over and read what was written in it.

Can I ask you out?

Her hands voluntarily went to her mouth in extreme blush. Rody found her so cute as she struggled to suppress herself with his cute way of asking her out.

She had always found him cute and adorable and the thought of him asking her out just made her feel like floating with feels.

"So... Will you go out with me tonight?" He sounded like a gentleman.

"Parang..." She gulped. "... date po?" She continued and pursed her lips in exhilaration.

"Mmm... Parang ganon na nga." He confirmed and smiled at her. "Sino ba naman ako para mag-inarte pa?" She held her cheeks and shamelessly blushed in front of him.

Bongbong was ready to go home, scheduled to pick up Jewel whom Martin set him up with to have some fun session that night. He walked to his car and unintentionally saw Rody opening the door of his car for Leni. They looked so happy and he couldn't help but feel bothered and annoyed.

He felt so annoyed that he suddenly lost his mood. He wanted to vent out. He wanted to come to her and insult her and call her a hoè but he knew that would make him look so jealous and pathetic and he didn't want to look that way to anyone.

He ignored and tried to keep it off his head for the rest of the day but it was tattooed in his vision. He couldn't just stop thinking about it.

After some pleasurable session with Jewel, he laid his back on the bed and thought about Leni.

Kung may affair siya kay Rody, for sure napakadaling bola bolahin non. Madali lang saakin makuha siya ulit.

He assured himself and planned to invite her out for a night again.

LUNGSOD CALOOCAN, Enero 6 (PIA) -- Iniharap sa media ng grupong SAMBAYANAN ang mga sumukong miyembro ng Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) na kabilang sa mga hanay ng student activists.

Ang seremonya ng pagsuko ay ginanap Lunes ng hapon sa National Press Club, sa Intramuros, Manila na dinaluhan ng mga surrenderees kasama ang ilan sa kanilang mga magulang at ilang kasapi ng grupong Hands-of-Our-Children o HOOC, na binubuo ng mga magulang ng mga kabataang nabiktima umano ng child recruitment ng NPA, na ang iba ay sumuko na sa pamahalaan, samantalang ang iba nama'y nananatili pa rin sa kilusan.

Kabilang din sa dumalo sina National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) Undersecretary Joel Egco at ang mga sumukong estudyante na sina Sherry May Ibao na tubong Borongan, Samar at Rey Christian “Chan-Chan” Sabado na miyembro ng grupong SAMBAYANAN at parehong dating estudyante at na-recruit ng NPA sa Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).

Kabilang sa mga magulang na dumalo at nagbigay ng kanilang testimonya sina Mang Rody at Tess Ibao, mga magulang ni Ka Sherry at sina Luisa Espina at Jacqueline Mendoza.

Pinasalamatan din ng grupo si Army Brigadier General Audrey L. Pasia, ang commander ng 702nd Infantry Brigade ng Philippine Army, na naging isang malaking instrumento sa pagsuko ng ilang kabataang estudyante na nagbalik loob sa pamahalaan.

Idinetalye naman ni Pasia ang paraan ng pagsuko ng mga dating rebelde na nakita umano ang mga panlolokong ginawa ng NPA sa kanilang mga kabataan.

Kaugnay nito, nanawagan din si Chan-Chan Sabado ng grupong SAMBAYANAN sa mga kabataang estudyante na "huwag magpagamit at magpalinlang sa grupong ANAKBAYAN, KABATAAN, LFS at Makabayan Block sa Kongreso," na tinutukoy umano na legal fronts ng NPA upang makapag-recruit sa mga unibersidad.

Hinikayat din ni Ka Sherry Ibao ang kaniyang mga kasamahan sa kilusan, maging ang ama ng kaniyang dinadalang sanggol na magbalik-loob na sa pamahalaan, dahil wala nang kinabukasan at patutunguhan ang kanilang ipinaglalaban.

Ayon kay Usec. Egco, na dati ring miyembro ng NPA noong kanyang kabataan, importanteng bantayan ang mahalagang papel ng mga administrador ng mga eskwelahan upang matutukan ang aktibismo sa mga paaralan.

Ani Egco, kailangan itong gawin upang matuldukan na ang mapanlinlang na NPA recruitment sa mga kabataan.

Bukod pa rito, aniya, mahalagang magkaroon din ng tiwala sa pamahalaan, gayundin sa Sandatahang Lakas at Pambansang Pulisya na nangangalaga sa seguridad at kapayapaan ng bansa.

Dagdag pa niya, importante rin na mabigyang-pansin ang kahalagahan na manatiling buo ang mga pamilya dahil ang mga kabataang galing dito ang puntirya umano ng NPA sa ginagawa nitong recruitment sa mga menor de edad. (PIA NCR)

Dal’wang araw pa lang nang matapos ang Cinemalaya kaya medyo groggy nang um-attack sa opening ng 2nd Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP). Bago ‘to, maagap na nag-imbita ‘yung isang official entry kaya pito na lang ang pinaglaanan ng badyet. Hindi ko kasi ugaling mag-ulit nampelikula. Masakit sa bulsa. 

Biglaan lang na nakapunta ako sa opening ng PPP dahil sa imbitasyon ng isang kakilala na nagkataon namang ginanap sa Samsung Hall ng SM Aura. Ilang hakbang lang ang mall sa opis namin kaya dumiretso ako ro’n nang mag-uwian.

Konti (na) lang ang tao nang dumating ako. Weekday kasi? At nakakapanghinayang na ‘di halos naibalita ang opening film. Invitational man o hindi, wala man lang post maski sa Facebook page ng PPP na ampelikula pala ng National Artist nating si Lino Brocka ang magbubukas ng festival.

OPENING FILM:

1. White Slavery – 9️⃣ 1985 🇵🇭 Lino Brocka

Ampalabas ay mistulang dokumentasyon ng pwersahang prostitusyon sa tatlong probinsyanang iniluwas pa-Maynila na premyadong ginampanan nina Jaclyn Jose, Sarsi Emanuelle at Emily Loren. Naka-angkla ampelikula sa Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag na sumentro naman ang kwento sa binatang nakipagsapalaran sa Maynila upang hanapin ang kasintahan na biktima ng white slavery.

  Pinalabas na no’ng 2017 ‘yong anim na premyadong pelikula sa espesyal na seksyon ng PPP. Galing at nanalo ang mga pelikula sa iba’t ibang filmfest sa Pilipinas kaya sobrang nakakapagtaka na binigyan ng Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) ng Zero Rating ang dalawang pelikula sa seksyong ito. Nagmuk’a ring saling-kitkit ang mga pelikula dahil sa ‘di maayos na distribusyon kung sa’n literal na siksikan sila sa isang sinehan lang ng mall hanggang sa unti-unti nang mawala sa ibang lugar nang tumatakbo na ang festival.

Payak pero tiyak. Suntok sa dibdib ampelikula sa mga ulila na o may isyu sa pamilya. Mabisa kahit pahapyaw na naisingit sa aralin ng mga bata ang tungkol sa kolonyalismo at sa linya nambatang bidang si Noel Comia Jr. na pangarap n’yang maging boksingero pero hindi maging isang senador. 

2. Balangiga: Howling Wilderness – 9️⃣ 2017 🇵🇭 Khavn Dela Cruz

Bangungot ang pagtulog at paggising sa gitna ng gera. Mata ng batang si Kulas ang nagsisilbing paragos ng kwento na markadong ginampanan ni Justine Samson kasama ang lolo (Pio del Rio) at napulot niyang bata (Warren Tuano) habang umeeskapo sa mga kolonyalistang Kano dahil sa “Kill & Burn” order ni Heneral Smith sa Samar no’ng taong 1901. Sirang plaka ampelikula ng kasaysayan bilang kalakhan ng populasyon ng Pilipinas sa kasalukuyan ay binubuo ng bata na isa pinakabulnerableng sektor ng lipunan.

3. Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus – 8️⃣ 2017 🇵🇭 Dwein Baltazar

The science of love. Ramdam ang mga lukot at lungkot sa mga pasikot-sikot ng Maynila dahil sa mabisang sinematograpiya ni Neil Daza habang dinadalaw-dalaw ang apat na lalaki ng misteryosang musa ng pagnanasa.

  4. High Tide – 7️⃣ 2017 🇵🇭 Tara Illenberger

Hibas (low tide) papuntang taib (high tide) ang timpla nampelikula habang nakalutang ang importansya ng bakawan dahil sa isyu ng pagbabago sa klima.

Eksaminasyon ampelikula sa iba’t ibang porma nang pagpatay mula hayop hanggang tao. Hanggang ngayon, napapanahon ampelikula bilang nagpatuloy ang inhustisya sa mga kapatid nating Lumad sa Mindanao at ang kultura ng impunidad sa kalakhan dahil sa ‘di maitatangging sabwatan ng estado, dambuhalang merkado at sunud-sunurang mga unipormado.

6. Paki – 6️⃣ 2017 🇵🇭 Giancarlo Abrahan

May mga seryosong eksenang bigla kang matatawa ta’s bigla kang hihinto, mahihiya dahil simpatiya at ‘di tawa ang kelangan ng mga karakter, partikular sa ginagampanan nina Dexter Doria at Noel Trinidad. Kabaligtaran ng Dagitab ng direktor na nagustuhan ko, resolbado naman ako sa kabuuan nampelikula pero hindi ko lang talaga natipuhan.

  Walo ang opisyal na entries ngayong taon base sa hindi malinaw na biglaang pagbabago ng ruling ng PPP kung saan bawal na ang mga pelikulang naipalabas na sa ibang festival. Samantala, tulad ng nakaraang taon, palabas pa rin ang mga banyagang pelikula taliwas sa mandato ng PPP na tanging mga pelikulang Pinoy lang ang palabas sa kasagsagan ng festival. 

OFFICIAL ENTRIES:

1. Signal Rock – 8️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Chito Roño

Napaka-grounded nampelikula pero iba pa rin ‘yung epek ng Badil ng direktor. Mahirap kalimutan si Barbs sa Die Beautiful pero epektibong nagampanan ni Christian Bables ang karakter ni Intoy bilang tropa ng buong taga-isla kung sa’n sentral ang gasangan, (batuhan sa may dagat) sa naratibo nampelikula dahil dun lang sila nakakagamit ng selpon. Natatangi ang karakter ng Ate Vicky ni Intoy na interesanteng binosesan ni Judy Ann Santos. 

2. Bakwit Boys – 7️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Jason Paul Laxamana

Isa sa dalawang entries ng direktor sa Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino kung sa’n sumentro ang kuwento sa magkakapatid na nag-bakwit (evacuate) sa bahay ng Lolo nila sa Pampanga dahil sa matinding bagyong tumama sa Isabela. Medyo baguhang artista ang mga pangunahing tauhan pero maayos naman ang pagganap, lalo na nina Vance Larena at Devon Seron. Na-turn off lang talaga ako sa revolutionary tax scene. 

3. The Day After Valentine’s – 7️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Jason Paul Laxamana

Kinuha agad ang atensyon ko nampelikula dahil sa absurdong eksena sa simula na parang may pampasiglang bilang si Lani (Bela Padilla). Sugat ambuong pelikula na laging nasasagi, kumikirot, umaantak, lalo na sa parteng nakaharap na n’ya ang kapatid n’ya (Jordan Castillo).

4. Madilim ang Gabi – 6️⃣  2017 🇵🇭 Adolfo Alix Jr.

Nasa POV ng mga durugista ampelikula. Ang mahabang eksena nang paulit-ulit na paghahanap ng mag-asawa (Gina Alajar at Philip Salvador) sa anak nilang si Alan (Felix Roco) ay alegorya nang paulit-ulit ding patayan sa Pilipinas dahil sa mas pinatinding Oplan Tokhang ng pasistang rehimen ni Digong. Ekselente ang papel ng ibinebentang trapo (cleaning rag) ng mag-asawa na nagsisilbing casing ng mga sachet ng droga na maihahambing sa tradisyonal na politiko (trapo) at mga nasa kapangyarihan bilang mga protektor. Mapapansin din ang “Duterte” wristband ni Alajar na premonisyon ng tokhang o posas ng malagim na kamatayan. 

5. Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi – 5️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Jun Lana

Mahina ang naging pagkonek ko sa kwento maliban sa signipikanteng karakter ni Margaux (Adrianna So) na nagpapakalat ng fake news tungkol kay Norma (Sue Ramirez). ‘Yan kasi ang totoong first name ni Mocha Uson.

6. Pinay Beauty: She’s No White – 4️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Jay Abello

Eto ‘yung pinaka-inaabangan ko sa festival dahil sa impresibong title, trailer at poster. Sayang lang na hindi yata maayos ang eksekyusyon ng kwento at biswalisyasyon ng konsepto tungkol sa pagiging kontento. 

7. We Will Not Die Tonight – 4️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Richard Somes

Hindi kami nag-swak ngayon ni Somes. Ok sa ‘kin ‘yung huli n’yang dalawang pelikula na El Peste at Historiographika Errata (‘di ko napanood ‘yung Cry No Fear) na kabaligtaran nitong pelikula dahil hindi ko matanggap ‘yong ideya na dahil lang hindi sumama ‘yung grupo ni Alex Medina sa grupo ni Paolo Paraiso; e, magpapatayan na sila at dun na lang iikot ang malaking porsyento nampelikula. 

8. Unli Life – 3️⃣ 2018 🇵🇭 Miko Livelo

Ayronikong inantok-antok ako dahil komedi ampelikula. Ang luma naman yata ng mga linya. Buti na lang, bawi naman sa disenyong pamproduksyon.

Masarap manood nampelikulang Filipino kahit magastos manood sa sinehan lalo na kung idadagdag sa presyo ng tiket, ang pamasahe (buti, tamad ako mag-Grab) at pagkain (buti, iniisip kong dapat mag-diet.). Tsamba lang na may pultaym akong day job kung kaya medyo nakakaya pa namang tustusan ‘yung droga kong manood.

Kapista ang pinausong tawag ngayon ng mga taga-Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) sa mga manonood ng PPP. Masarap sa tenga. Tipong imbitado ka, hindi gatecrasher. Pero hindi pwedeng kalimutan na ang biglaang pagsulpot ng unang PPP no’ng 2017 ay kasabay rin ng pagbabalik ulit ng mas komersyalidong tipo ng Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) no’ng 2017 na maaalalang nagbagong-bihis na no’ng 2016.

Huling araw na ngayon ng festival at sana humabol kayong manood dahil babalik na ulit bukas ang malaking porsyento ng mga komersyal na pelikulang banyaga o galing sa mga dambuhalang studio/producer dahil ito ang dikta ng mga kapitalista. Naalala ko na naman tuloy ‘yung isa pang PPP o Public-Private Partnership na una ko nang nabanggit sa personal kong seleksyon ng 27 Pinoy Best Pinoy Films of 2017.

Malaki pa rin amproblema natin sa aksesibilidad ng mga pelikulang lokal, lalo na ‘yung pinondohan ng mga maliliit na prodyuser. Mahalagang itanong kung ano ba talaga ang esensya ng eksistensya ng PPP at kung kaninong interes ba talaga naglilingkod ang FDCP: Sa mga kapista ba o sa mga kapitalista?
