Old Colorado City  (No. 5)

Coal was mined in Colorado Springs beginning in 1859. At the industry's height, there were 50 coal mines in the Colorado Springs, mostly in the Rockrimmon and Cragmor - Colorado Springs Country Club area. Mine workers often lived on the west side of town, like Old Colorado City, while investors lived in the Old North End.

Roads into the area included a toll road that connected to the northeast with the Overland's 1865 "Despatch Express Route". Southward out of Colorado City a stage road (now Old Stage Road) traversed through South Cheyenne Creek's canyon to Cripple Creek, and a carriage road through North and South  Cheyenne Canyons and westward was the Ute Pass Wagon Road. Another route into the area was the north–south Cherokee Trail/Jimmy Camp Trail, which was near the Goodnight–Loving Trail. The Jimmy Camp Trail was one branch of the Trapper's Trail, a trail used by trappers and explorers from 1820 and during the gold rush. Trapper's Trail ran north–south from Fort Laramie to the El Pueblo trading post in the present Pueblo County, and from there branched off to Bent's Old Fort or Taos, New Mexico.

It had been a lovely gathering so far, and Faris was thoroughly enjoying herself. The evening meal had been scrumptious and the ever-flowing wine was sublime, but the highlight of the night was the gossip. Apparently, there was a newcomer amongst them and how his reputation preceded him in their small and outlying court. The latest rumor to circulate through the crowd was that the Lord of Everness was gracing them with his presence because he had banished from the King’s Court after impregnating a foreign princess in the out of wedlock. “No, stop!” Faris exclaimed, scandalized, and placed her hand on the arm of one of the ladies whose company she had the pleasure of enjoying that evening. “Surely that cannot be true. If it was, war would have been declared, and His Majesty would have summoned all the men to fight for him!” 

“I swear that it’s true! Princess Rosaline told me herself, and even if it wasn’t, he still has a reputation of getting underneath skirts and breaking hearts so we all must be careful. Especially you, my darling Faris! You may not be a lady by title, but you are one of us, and you mustn’t let him think of you as the low-lying fruit.”

A dark brow twitched slightly in offense, but Faris hid her annoyance with a wide smile and took a sip of her wine. It was a well-meaning low blow, but it was still a low blow. “You needn’t worry about me. If anyone is low-lying fruit, it’s Lady Aurora over there.” The group of women burst into a fit of laughter that drew a few gazes throughout the ballroom, but they quickly shushed themselves. “But I’m afraid that no man will be hunting after me soon. I think Sebastian is set to propose now that he’s settled in with his new title.” This sparked a new set of excited conversation of a wedding in their future to help plan, but soon, Faris had to excuse herself to refresh her drink. Just as she neared the table, a familiar voice called out to her and she turned to see the newly appointed Baron approaching her with a redheaded man in tow. “Lord Sebastian,” She greeted with a small curtsy, emphasizing his new title teasingly. “What a pleasure it is to see you tonight.”

A faint blush formed on Sebastian’s cheeks as he smiled affectionately and returned with a small bow. “Thank you, Ms. Faris. You’re a vision, as always. I won’t take much of your time as I’ve a few elbows to rub, but I wished to introduce you to an old friend of mine. Gwaine, this is Ms. Faris Rockrimmon, daughter of Sir Thomas Rockrimmon of the Rockrimmon Trading Company. Faris, this is Lord Gwaine, Duke Samuel of Everness’s son.”

Bekime ‘Becky’ Elshani vanished in Colorado Springs, Colorado during the early morning hours of March 29th, 2008. The 22 year-old vanished in the midst of a volatile relationship with her live-in boyfriend Daniel Dereere. Becky and Daniel had recently reconciled after Becky briefly rekindled a relationship with her ex-husband Wesley Bartle. Her family members were unsure of why Becky would want to reunite with Daniel, as the two of them had both been arrested for assaulting each other during previous incidents. Becky actually had a case pending against Daniel at the time of their reconciliation. In January 2008, while Becky was dating Wesley, Daniel allegedly hacked into Becky’s Myspace page and posted a nude picture of her. Becky pursued charges against Daniel, but then got back together with him a short time later. Daniel was scheduled to appear in court for those charges on April 1st, 2008—just 3 days after Becky vanished.

Becky was last seen by her family members on the evening of March 28th, when she and Daniel went to her parent’s home in Colorado Springs. According to Becky’s sister Fatime Elshani, Daniel and Becky got into an argument at the Elshani home. Fatime stated, “He started yelling at her; she kept saying she didn’t want to leave. We kept telling her to stay but Daniel insisted that she left with him. That was the last time I ever saw her.” The final sighting of Becky was around 1:15am on March 29th; she was in the 100 block of West Rockrimmon Boulevard. Becky has never been seen or heard from again.

Two days later, on March 31st, 2008, police went to Becky’s apartment to perform a welfare check. Upon approaching the residence, police heard gunfire. They entered the apartment and found Daniel dead from a gunshot wound. He had shot himself. Becky was still nowhere to be found, and there was otherwise no sign of a struggle at the apartment. Still, investigators clearly found it suspicious that Daniel took his own life two days after Becky vanished, and one day before he was supposed to appear in court for the charges from posting Becky’s nude pictures on Myspace. Investigators searched Daniel’s car and reportedly found evidence that indicated foul play was involved in Becky’s disappearance, however they have not specified what exactly was found. Investigators did reveal that Daniel drove his car to a park in Teller County just hours after Becky was last seen. Unfortunately, though, a search of the park turned up no evidence.

Daniel did not leave a note or any other evidence/messages that indicated he knew of Becky’s whereabouts. It is widely believed that Daniel killed Becky and dumped her body before taking his own life, however due to the fact that Daniel is deceased and Becky has never been found, investigators have been unable to verify this. Becky’s case remains open today and a $5000 reward is being offered for anyone with information on her disappearance. Name: William

General Appearance: Of the three Everness children, William takes after their mother the most. Inheriting her dark hair, fair complexion, and lithe figure, the only and very subtle feature that he has that distinguishes him as his father’s son is his jawline, but it is not nearly as sharp. At first glance, William seems to have inherited his eyes from his mother, but, upon closer inspection, they’re actually much closer to his grandfather’s, showing just how potent the Rockrimmon’s genes are in him. However, it could be argued that he inherited his demeanor and presence from his father. While William does not have his father’s impressive physique, he does have his lordly and intelligent aura about him. 

Personality: William is much more sensitive than he would like to admit though he makes an impressive show of appearing calm and stoic now that he’s older. When his father left to fight in the war, he took it upon himself to be the man of the Everness household and grew up much faster than he should have. He’s very critical about himself and has been since he was a boy. With a strong sense of duty and tradition that was strongly advocated by his grandmother, William sometimes feels that he never got the chance to grow up into the man that he was meant to be and that frustration occasionally erupts in angry, childish, and violent tantrums. Perhaps the most stubborn of his siblings, he likes to be in control and right and strives to maintain the appearance that everything in his life is and hates whenever something threatens that image. 

Special Talents: When he was younger, William was a skilled fencer in all three disciplines, thanks to the Marquis, Mathieu de Poséy, but now that he spends more time pursuing politics, it’s become more of a hobby than exceptional skill. 

Which parent they like better: His father - Truthfully, William was never as close to his parents as his siblings were because he felt that he had to become an adult at an early age. He had many male role models during his father’s absence and did not necessarily grow up to be the man his father wanted him. This fact upsets him more than he would like to admit because all he ever wanted was to be like his father and have his approval.

Which sibling they like better: Samuel - William always wanted a little brother and when he finally got one, he was ecstatic. He loved being a big brother though he did become a little jealous of how free-spirited and carefree Sam got to be as an adult.

Personal Headcanon: William signed over the Rockrimmon assets to his sister and brother for when they came of age because he wanted to ensure their futures as they would not have any when he became a lord.

Face Claim: Ben Whishaw

Name: Kenna

General Appearance: While William inherited most of his genes from the Rockrimmon line, Kenna inherited most of hers from the Everness’s. She has a striking resemblance to her father with her firey-red hair, blue eyes, and jawline, but her body and presence are more like her mother’s. Regal and lady-like, she has a small and lithe figure with a pale complexion and emits a quietly demure and well-mannered aura. 

Personality: Outwardly, Kenna appears to be everything that a well brought up lady should be. Emitting a quietly demure and well-mannered temperament, several have made the crucial mistake of assuming that she is also meek like the other women of her caste. Kenna is more prone to passive-aggression than outright aggression like her brothers and is much more dangerous with her words than she could ever be with a blade. Capable of being manipulative and hugely influential, it could be argued that she is the smartest of the Everness children, but she lacks confidence in herself. Kenna has always felt that she would never be good enough for just about anything and has a great fear of commitment and abandonment that stemmed from her youth. She is not quick to trust or love anyone, but when she does, she is truly a loyal and committed ally. 

Special Talents: She can dance just as beautifully and gracefully as her mother - if not better. With her demure demeanor, it is easy to dismiss her, but when she dances, it’s impossible to. Her secret personality and sensuality burst through her quiet facade to highlight the beautiful and vibrant soul hidden behind layers of insecurities.

Which parent they like better: Her father - Without a doubt, Kenna had and will always be her father’s little girl. There is no one in the world that she prefers over him, which has made it extremely difficult for her to find someone to be with because admittedly, he is also the reason for her fear of abandonment.

Which sibling they like better: Samuel - There was a time in her life when she hated Samuel with all of her heart, but it was childish hate, He had just appeared in her life out of the blue and took her parents’ attention from her; however, as they grew up, she came to care for him as he never judged or criticized her like William did. Samuel became the person she went to for advice and a shoulder to cry on - he was her best friend.

Personal Headcanon: After their mother died, Kenna and her older brother, William, had an irreversible falling-out when one of his friends took advantage of her vulnerability and sadness and attempted to assault her. She was afraid and unwilling to tell their father because he was mourning the loss of his wife. When William refused to believe her and accused her of loose behavior, she felt betrayed by him and thought that he would never defend and protect her like she would and had ever since they were children and refused to speak to him ever again. 

Face Claim: Rachel Hurd-Wood

Name: Samuel

General Appearance: When Samuel was born, there was no doubt in his lineage, but now that he’s older, there is definitely no mistaking that he is his father’s son. Seeming to have opted out of inheriting a single gene from his mother, he is an exact copy of Gwaine with some of the same mannerisms to the point that he is often mistaken to be his father - or at least when he was younger. The only thing that distinguishes him from his father is that he carries himself differently. Samuel is much more approachable and personable than the rest of his family, thanks to his friendly personality and acts like he hasn’t a single worry in the world. He is constantly teeming and fidgeting with energy, which made him an absolute nightmare for his tutors.

Personality: Samuel is the most extroverted and friendliest of the Everness children, but he is also the biggest troublemaker. He has an incredible zest for life and is continuously in search of an adventure. Incredibly friendly and personable, the court thought that he would be an easy target to manipulate and control, but Samuel is much smarter than he lets on. Playing dumb until the very last moment, he is as manipulative as his sister when the situation calls for it but would rather live a peaceful existence. Like his siblings, or rather his entire family, he is prone to fits of stubbornness and anger, but he doesn’t hold on to it like they do. Samuel doesn’t believe in holding grudges and would rather spend his time being happy and worry-free, which leads to him avoiding responsibility like the plague.

Special Talents: Samuel loves anything and everything that involves the water and is very skilled at sailing. 

Which parent they like better: His mother - Samuel is unashamed to admit that he was a mama’s boy. He loved his mother more than anything else in the world and inherited her dreams of not being chained to the courts and seeing the world.

Which sibling they like better: Neither, he loves them both equally despite their flaws and serves to be the bridge that keeps them connected to each other whether they like it or not.

Personal Headcanon: Samuel joined the King’s Navy for a few years and did very well while he served; however, it was too regimented for him so he left and became a traveling merchant with the Rockrimmon ships signed over to him for the Everness Empire.

Original and novel regatta prize ideas

There’s a great discussion growing on the Masters Rowing International Facebook page.  It’s all about what prizes should be awarded at regattas and who was delighted or bored with the current offerings. Please join the group and invite your friends. 

Do we need more fun prizes at regattas?

The thread started with this

Something more practical would be fun. There are running races where they give out gift certificates and cash prizes! We could do the same at regattas.

Head of the Fish prize

These regattas give non-standard prizes

Head of the Fish award fish heads (obviously)

Stonewall Regatta in Washington DC – bottles of wine

Navy Day (head race) in Philadelphia gives mugs

Basel head in Switzerland, they introduced an optional open sprint in the morning when crews were rowing the course. First prize was a night in a very nice hotel by the river.

Rockrimmon in Springfield MA awards steaks for 1st, pie for 2nd, and cheese for 3rd (non-meat eaters can choose alternate)

Pineapple Regatta hosted by Gentle Giant that awards fresh pineapple for 1st, dried pineapple for 2nd, and canned for 3rd.

The Dillon Challenge Regatta in Frisco, CO has a raffle. Prizes are donations from local businesses (cheap advertising) like cafe gift cards are discount coupons, and the money collected for raffle tickets goes to the club.

Stourport pottery

Head of the Creek in Vancouver the prizes are cakes. everybody rows harder for cake, right?

One of the head races on the Cam (Cambridge UK) we won a gift voucher from one of the kit manufacturers and it was the best thing

Warrington (UK) have been known to give t-shirts (size guessing issues),

Stourport (UK) have some lovely local mugs made of pottery (it’s a pottery town)

At Regattas in Perth Australia, they gave out glasses with the clubs logo on them…so useful!

Capital Rowing Club awarded mini wrenches tied with red, white and blue ribbons

We’ve gotten beer steins at regattas in the Woodlands (Texas)

Rural Henley in Oregon; they have a “stake race” where winners get actual steaks, plus nice customized platters for them.

My most treasured rewards are the watches I’ve won at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia (US)

Green Mountain Regatta (CA) 1st: jug of maple syrup 🍁 2nd: bag of apples 🍎 3rd: gallon of apple cider

Here’s a list of alternatives suggested

Maybe some “gymkhana” features in the regatta (dressage??).

A proper “presenter” and make it a fully-grown show!

Don’t forget the fund-raising side (and some donations for selected charities).

A “sparkleduck”

Maybe fun booby prizes for foul-ups. The best crash, or someone falling into the water, which can happen in bad weather, or at a stake turn. Most foul mouthed coxswain, or most saintly clean-mouthed cox.

Cakes with medals baked inside (like Christmas Pudding sixpences)

 I tried to pull together a local “fun” race a few summers ago – first place prize was a sparkleduck (rubber ducky made up like a unicorn)

Waterbottles, rigger jiggers, keyings, car stickers and socks have also been bulk-regatta prize purchases from Rock the Boat Rowing (thanks Di!).

Most creative crew name / costumes? Era of TV shows (60s, 70s, etc), or movies (James Bond), Disney, reptiles, mammals, etc. Name the crew and dress appropriately. Oldest rower, youngest rower.

And reasons for medals versus pots

Also, if you’re going to reward the first, second and third crews, as is normal these days, medals make more sense.

Tonia Williams designed medals for rowing regattas

I remember my disappointment when I received a bottle of wine instead of a medal for one of my first wins. I had never been an athlete, so this was huge for me. A bottle of wine was a real let down; I wanted something to clink with encouragement!

I have no more room for any more bloody pots and tankards! I would much rather receive something useful like a t-shirt
