Me, being tired of people trying to explain that Rose didn't really love Jack, that she only loved an idea of him, that it was all superficial and hormonal...
Like, I'm the first to not believe in love at first sight in reality, but in fiction it's different.
Rose and Jack are symbolically coded as soulmates by the story, even before they meet.
That's why they fall so quickly in love with each other when they finally meet.
Rose and Jack notably share a love for the art world. Something that Rose is the only one around her and that no one understands. Jack is a literal artist. They even like the same artists !
Rose is someone who is locked away and yearns for freedom. Jack is literally a free spirit.
Rose rejects the inherently misogynist and patriarchal society, just like Jack.
Rose has a fire burning inside her and immense strength, just like Jack, but he is the only one who allows her to finally express all of that.
There is also the simple fact that they are able to understand each other very quickly. For example, Jack understanding that Rose would never jump. Or, the fact that Rose already knew that Jack was innocent for stealing the necklace, as she told him when she went to find him. For what ? Because as Jack told her as he was being taken away, she knows him. The fact that Jack trusts her completely, even when things seem very bad ? (hello the ax ?!) And so does she ?
Or also, the rather funny fact that they talk at the same time when they are annoyed with the guy who is lecturing them about a door when the boat is sinking.
All this to say that I'm tired of people trying to rationalize fictional romances. Especially when they are as well constructed as Rose & Jack.
I'm already tearing my hair out at those who say that we shouldn't see Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights as romances...

The idea of m/f ships where, in the most basic terms, a male villain is paired with a female hero has captured the imagination of many and will continue to do so despite all the pearl clutching and opposition to it on the grounds of it being problematic and what not. A simple reason is that this trope, if it can be termed as one, is considered by many to be thoroughly addictive and entertaining.
What it needs, in order to be done right, is one specific ingredient: The female character must be as fleshed out and nuanced as possible. She must possess individuality and her personality must standout, regardless of what role she has to play. She must have aspirations and motivations, be it small or big. She must keep evolving with the plot instead of remaining static. Her thoughts, actions and reactions must be coherent to the plot and her characterization. Her presence must be acknowledged at all costs. Likeable or not, her existence must not be overlooked, much less forgotten.
The finest 'problematic' ships, from my experience, are those in which the audience and/or readers feel compelled to understand and be invested in both parties, albeit in different degrees.
#insisting that all female characters stick with the nice safe option to be 'protected' from perceived danger is no solution#it never was#fictional characters#general#fiction#vegebul#gilsaber#eremika#saurondriel#shipping#zutara#oshamir#ellen x orlok#kastle#captainswan#spuffy#snowbaird#zervis#heathcliff x catherine#jane x rochester#delena#klamille#basically every klaus ship#proship

Jane and Rochester are my favourite couple hands down but funny enough one of my favourite scenes in the book is their breakup. Not only is it filled with such raw emotions and passion but Charlotte Brontë fed us so much poetic symbolism on their wedding night!!!
1. Rochester bridal carries Jane down the stairs when she felt faint. What stereotypically happens on a wedding night? A groom bridal carries his bride to the bedroom to consummate the marriage. Ironic how it’s reversed… they are descending the stairs and leaving the bedroom.
2. Rochester seating Jane in his chair. His chair symbolizes authority and power. Jane sits in his chair because symbolically she now holds the power and authority over what happens to their relationship. Having Rochester place Jane in his chair foreshadows his realization at the end of the scene that he is in fact powerless, and there is nothing he can do to make Jane stay unless it’s of her own free will. His fate lies within her choice.
3. Again, Charlotte plays with the theme of traditional marriage ceremonies and gives Jane & Rochester reverse wedding vows. Typically in the marriage ceremony there is a vow made followed by an “I do”. Charlotte cleverly uses this but makes it a vow of separation between Jane and Rochester. He pleads to Jane if she really means to go and Jane replies “I do”, then Rochester repeatedly asks if she means it after kissing her to which Jane responds “I do” each time.
4. Rochester’s “I could bend her with my finger and thumb” speech. This whole monologue is full of symbolism as Rochester reasons with himself if physical violence would be his last resort in making Jane stay. Nothing he has said could convince her to yield. He knows he is powerless, though there is one place he still knows he holds more power… in his physical strength. He verbalizes in pretty graphic symbolism what would happen if this option would get him what he wants (Jane) but it won’t do. Even if he got to Jane’s body he wouldn’t have her soul (and that’s really what he wants). He realizes the ONLY way he can have Jane is if her will decides it and this is the moment he finally lets her go.

CHAPTER 9 - A STRANGE DANCE
I’m still in awe of this art by @anon-nee THANK YOU!
Jane Eyre - AU Arcane style. Inspired by a Regency!Silco prompt on Tumblr.
Silco/Reader Insert (Jane/Governess)
Ch 8 and this one are still my fav chapters to date. I love everything about them.
*
Silco’s eyes flared at that remark. His lips twitched before grabbing your wrist and practically threw you into the drawing room. The door slammed shut, and you heard the click of the lock when real fear of him finally hit you.
There was another door, and your instinct was to escape this room before he killed you.
“Don’t you walk away from me,” he snarled.
His iron grip had your wrist again, whipping you around until your back hit the wall.
*
Jesus...this whole chapter was a rollercoaster.
Everything from a waltz, TWO sword duels (Silco with a sword is a fucking sexy thing), almost kiss, death and I think one of the most sizzling kisses I’ve written to date. Le Sigh. I love this chapter with every fiber of my being.

The *New* Fassbender Psychopath Scale 😈

*Updated 02/23/2025*
I wanted to expand on the one introduced on the Kelly Clarkson show, below are the Fassy movies I've seen, my general "psychopath" rating for each character and reason why
Disclaimers:
For context I am essentially swapping "psychopath" with "evil," I am in no way trying to tie this to any psychological disorders or do a deep dive into any characters. Just a very surface-level "how nefariously evil is this character?"
These are my opinions, I encourage you to share, comment and make your own ratings. I will also be updating as I watch more of his films.
There *will* be spoilers so if you haven't seen these movies/shows, consider yourself warned!
The scale will also be a 0-5. I'm using 👿 and a zero will be a 👍
Let's go! 🦈
Movies 🎥
Hunger: Bobby Sands 👍
Only going off the context of the movie, he was on hunger strike for his cause and ended up starving to death. (Not doing a deep dive, don't know too much about the real person or protest).
Eden Lake: Steve 👍
Guy and his girlfriend just trying to escape and survive a gang of murderous teenagers.
Fish Tank: Connor 👿👿👿👿👿
Oh boy, this guy... He grooms and r*pes a child, and then if that wasn't bad enough, she's the daughter of his girlfriend, and if THAT wasn't bad enough, we find out he's got a wife and child he's been keeping this from.
Inglourious Basterds: Lt. Hicox 👍👍
Goes undercover to help defeat the n*zis (helps get a few killed too, even though he dies in the process).
Centurion: Quintus Dias 👍
Just a soldier, trying to survive.
Jane Eyre: Mr. Rochester 👿👿👿
Keeps his wife, suffering from mental illness, locked in the walls and keeps it a secret so he doesn't scare off another woman he's trying to marry.
X-Men: Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto 👿👿
Erik's anger comes from a place of trauma and his worst fears keep coming to fruition. That being said, he does blindly distrust all humans, betrays Charles multiple times and causes so much unnecessary destruction.
A Dangerous Method: Carl Jung 👿👿
Doctor cheats on his wife with his patients, twice.
Shame: Brandon Sullivan 👍
A man suffering with addiction and trauma, plus added guilt when his sister stays over. Wish I could give him a hug.
Haywire: Paul 👿👿
I wasn't paying attention (he's not in it for that long) but I think he double crossed the main character and shot someone?
Prometheus/Alien Covenant: David 8 👿👿👿
I will defend David with my dying breath but to be honest, he does some horrendous things. Intentionally infecting humans with alien parasites, massacring an entire planet, killing and experimenting on someone he loved? Sorry David, you're getting a 3!
12 Years a Slave: Edwin Epps 👿👿👿👿👿👿
Sadistic slave owner and r*pist, about as evil as it gets (and yes I put an extra 👿).
Frank: Frank 👍
Poor Frank has done no wrong, just wants to make music and wear mask.
Slow West: Silas Selleck 👿
Starts out tricking the main character so he can find a bounty but has a change of heart.
Macbeth: Macbeth 👿👿👿👿
M*rders the king in his sleep so he can become king, orders Banquo and his son killed (although the son does escape) and burns MacDuff's wife and children at the stake.
Steve Jobs: Steve Jobs 👿👿
Greedy businessman, neglectful father and stole credit from his friend and business partner.
The Light Between Oceans: Tom Sherbourne 👿
He and his wife were heartbroken after their miscarriages but he does technically kidnap a child, keeping her from her grieving mother. He does eventually turn himself in.
Assassin's Creed: Cal/Aguilar 👿
Callum 'the pimp killer' Lynch "avatars" his assassin ancestor Aguilar. (It is about assassins after all, had to give him something).
Song to Song: Cook 👿👿
This movie was hard to follow but I'm giving him a two because he might be a groomer (he met the main character, who he later sleeps with, at 16) and he screwed Ryan Gosling's character out of the copyright to his songs.
Alien Covenant: Walter 1 👍
Don't really think Walter can be evil, he doesn't have the capacity that David does.
Next Goal Wins: Thomas Rongen 👿
Intentionally misgenders and deadnames a character because he's upset at her, later apologizes. Also a bit of a jerk to everyone at the beginning.
TV 📺
A Bear Named Winnie: Lt. Coleburn 👿
He brings a baby bear to a military camp. Also leaves the bear at a zoo, letting her live out her life in a small cage instead of releasing her back to the wild when he had the chance.
William & Mary: Lukasz 👿👿👿
Jumped through the episode to watch the Fassy bits but ew... Guy m*lests the midwife that just delivered he and his girlfriend's baby.
Sherlock Holmes & The Case of the Silk Stocking: Charles Allen 👿👿👿👿👿
Even though it's two characters, I'm rating them the same. One's a child m*lester and murder and one knew about it and did nothing.
The Agency: Martian 👿
He is knowingly putting himself, his daughter, the cia AND his girlfriend at risk all because he can't let his relationship go? (Spoiler: he still can't and ends up going double agent to rescue her).
Here's the original video for context:

Let me know what you think!
Share any suggestions of what movie or show I should watch next.
