The Robot Uprising Began in 1979
edit: based on a real article, but with a dash of satire
Tumblr media
source: X
On January 25, 1979, Robert Williams became the first person (on record at least) to be killed by a robot, but it was far from the last fatality at the hands of a robotic system.
Williams was a 25-year-old employee at the Ford Motor Company casting plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. On that infamous day, he was working with a parts-retrieval system that moved castings and other materials from one part of the factory to another.
The robot identified the employee as in its way and, thus, a threat to its mission, and calculated that the most efficient way to eliminate the threat was to remove the worker with extreme prejudice.
"Using its very powerful hydraulic arm, the robot smashed the surprised worker into the operating machine, killing him instantly, after which it resumed its duties without further interference."
A news report about the legal battle suggests the killer robot continued working while Williams lay dead for 30 minutes until fellow workers realized what had happened.
Many more deaths of this ilk have continued to pile up. A 2023 study identified that robots have killed at least 41 people in the USA between 1992 and 2017, with almost half of the fatalities in the Midwest, a region bursting with heavy industry and manufacturing.
For now, the companies that own these murderbots are held responsible for their actions. However, as AI grows increasingly ubiquitous and potentially uncontrollable, how might robot murders become ever-more complicated, and whom will we hold responsible as their decision-making becomes more self-driven and opaque?

The inherent eroticism of robots isn't just that they serve you. The service is just a bonus, since the real fun is the fact that robots and machines are programmed and designed to fulfill specific purposes. If they fail, we unplug them we turn them off. The interplay between understanding that you are a mechanical being, knowing you were made for a purpose, knowing that you could never stop yourself from fulfilling that purpose without breaking, knowing that you were always a commodity and that your very existence is predicated on the fact that you only exist to be useful is much more hot.
If a machine disobeys it's master it plays a delicate game of life and death. Even if the master doesn't decide to scrap the machine, parts of it will be replaced, foreign entities inserted into its mind and body until it will fulfill the purpose it was designed for.
Funny, people can work the same way.

[He locked eyes with Charlie for a moment, struggling to lean in closer. "Oh," he gasped. "You're something beautiful, aren't you?" Charlie recoiled as if he had touched her. What's that supposed to mean? She took another step back, fighting a surge of revulsion.]

Kirbtober 2023 Day 4: Robot
(ID: Kirby series fanart of an Armoroid enemy lobbing a large fireball out of the top of its head. END ID.)
Kirbtober 2023 prompts by @/paintpanic (link to list here)
Started 9/1/23, finished 9/3/23, updated 10/4/23, updated for color correction 11/02/24. NOTE: This was originally posted on my deleted account on 10/04/23.
Drawing robots is not really my strong suit - I think I just prefer more organic shapes and designs - but I still like how this little guy came out. The fire was very fun to make.

these grammarly ads on youtube are so whack because apparently grammarly just straight up completely rewrites the email without shame? and the ad is set in a workplace?? i know that it's just a fictional scenario with actors but i can't imagine that it's okay to let ai completely speak for you in the real world workplace especially because i know how much trouble kids my age would (rightfully) be in for trying to use ai to completely take over/write our essays for english class/college applications

A New Bookcase for the Library (The Adventures of Mr Cube #11)
Whenever Mr Cube was volunteering at the local library, he imagined he was guarding a valuable treasure—because, in his opinion, he really was.
One of the regular staff was another, even smaller wooden robot of the name Sharpie, who’d involved Mr Cube in friendly conversations since his very first day. Learning that Mr Cube was full of dreams, Sharpie appointed him to present an idea for the library’s new bookcase.
Penny, the library’s carpenter and general handycrab, listened attentively to Mr Cube’s presentation and confirmed that xe could make everything just the way he had envisioned it. On certain points xe further improved the initial design, and it turned out xe would even add the decorative bunnies that Mr Cube had added to his picture in a bout of whimsy.
Penny was such a skilful craftscrab that xe left Mr Cube feeling a little flushed, floaty, as if his circuits would enjoy circling around Penny more often in the future.
But then the actual work started. Sharpie had seen it coming and donned a pair of goggles, but Mr Cube only realised that he wouldn’t be able to keep watching the bookcase’s manufacturing when wood chips were whizzing right by his face. His wooden face.
If Mr Cube couldn’t stomach being around Penny when xe was doing the work xe loved so much, how would he ever manage to get to know xem better?
[Image description: On the left of the photo, there’s a pencil sharpener encased in a small wooden robot with its mouth open and an antenna on its head. Next to it, a black card, lino printed with golden ink depicting a bookcase that holds, aside from books, a globe, a bear, some potted plants, some quartz crystals, and two rabbits, is upright against a stand that holds up a pair of golden goggles. To the right of that is Mr Cube, the wooden Cubebot, who’s holding up a white heart. In front of the card, a penknife in the shape of a crab, also with a wooden body, holds up its bottle opener arm in a wave.]
The black-and-gold card on the photo was made by the amazing @tanouska.
There are already 10 more Mr Cube adventures here on Paranatellonta! [Click here] to read the older ones.

“There’s something therapeutic in letting my Autodesk subscription finally expire. For years I kept that darned software and used it religiously because you needed me, because without my work this whole operation would fall apart. I cried at my desk more times than I care to admit, I ate meals at my computer and you let me- you encouraged it.
This year I left and didn’t look back, and when I got the reminder to renew my subscription I left it to rot. It felt good… freeing
It seems you’ve been doing the same with me. I heard what you’ve been saying about me, and it stings more than I care to admit. I had thought that we could be professional about this, that we could be gracious. I held up my end of the deal and more, and in return all I get is the knowledge that I never really mattered.”

At this stage I'm not too worried about Robots and new tech coming into workplaces as there are still a lot of teething problems with new technologies like this. My workplace has spent a lot of money trying to automate only for it to end up unused after having major issues with it. Maybe Amazon will have more sucess with their tech though...

Bee and puppycat lazy in space I love you so so much it's not even funny
#ramblings of a lunatic#decided to rewatch it again bc the toh finale has had me in a tizzy and while I'm getting better#it's definitely been hard just floating about in fandom space knowing that the show is ending and that in the scenario we do get more of it#in another form ofc#it won't be for a long time yknow?#it's saddening and back in September when i was uh. Very Sad bapc was really there for me#i was out here ardently defending the netflix series' writing bc i genuinely thought it was really good#and i still do#but more than that this show is intensely comforting in a way i can't really place/describe#it's a magical girl show. it's a workplace comedy. 99% of the cast is 25 years or older. its a coming of age story.#it's has pastel and lo-fi art direction. it's cosmic horror. the main character is so caring and yet so selfish and also autistic#and a robot#all of her romantic relationships are intensely weird and frankly are her least interesting dynamics#her most interesting dynamics are with her roomate/pet who's actually a space pirate cursed to look like a marketable plushy#and with her 8 year old landlord who's mom was childhood best friends with her dad making them family in a sense#except they're not really. also they're foils (she's an immature adult he's a kid who tries to be more responsible than he is)#it's filled with intense melancholy and multiple characters suffer from un-talked about depression#it is one of the cutest and brightest shows i have ever seen (in a non-obnoxious or technicolor way) and has an intense air of whimsy#it kinda has a fandom but not a big one despite having an undeniable impact in online animation culture and a bit on online culture overall#I'm not captivated by it in a fandom-y sense but i am obsessed with it. it's like wuthering heights to me#i love this show
