Summary: a mechanic is called in to help a damaged bot that was found deactivated at the country fairgrounds.

“Most of this looks functional,” the mechanic says, raising whumpee’s limp arm and checking their range of movement. “There’s a lot of rust, but most of it didn’t penetrate your inner casing. I don’t know what the fuck they were thinking giving a model like you tactile sensors, they’re already degraded to hell. These sensors are only a year old at most, too. Jesus,”

Whumpee knows exactly what they were thinking. It is strange that the mechanic doesn’t. But the mechanic is looking over xim more like a human doctor than a mechanic, despite clear awareness that xe is no human. There is no surprise at the rusted joints or eroded wires, but the mechanic still checks their function with a methodical care. Perhaps the mechanic doesn’t have the necessary parts for repair- those can be expensive. It may explain the reticence to act as mechanics normally do. The mechanic certainly seems to be acting independently, with no financial backing or sanctioned lab space. In fact, whumpee is sitting on a couch. Precedence states that this is not an appropriate place for robot to be. Xe would bring it up, but xe knows better than to question.

“It shouldn’t take long for me to take them out,” the mechanic says. Whumpee feels something inside ximself stutter for a moment, like a misplaced gear. “In this state these probably only cause you pain,”

“Ke-eeep,” Xis voice comes with mechanical whir and hiss. Xe didn’t know xe was capable of speaking out of turn. Perhaps some inhibitor function is broken. Despite xis horror at the prospect, xe can’t stop speaking. Destroya help them. “Keep sensors. Please,”

The mechanic looks at xim with an expression xe fails to cross reference xis hir data. Damage is surely impending. Whumpee takes inventory of all current functioning pieces, trying to calculate how much of it xe will be able to do without.

“Are you sure?” The mechanic asks. Whumpee doesn’t know quite what to make of it. Even so, xe answers as required.

“With, with sensors, there is not nothing. Even when processing is inactive and there are only maintenance functions running, if the sensors are there. If the sensors are there it is possible to determine that the shell and software has remained intact. Although an unintended effect, it is beneficial to the securing of the body when otherwise unmonitored.” Whumpee knows xis words are unsubstantial, and borderline incoherent. The mechanic seems processes xis words with effort. Maybe xe is only spaghetti. Nonsensical.

“Alright,” the mechanic says. “But if it starts to hurt you too bad, I can try to adjust what’s left or remove it,"

Even though robots don’t breathe, the mechanic is almost convinced this one just sighed with relief. They have a feeling they just made the right choice. It hadn’t occurred to them how scary it may be for the bot. Going to sleep in one place, and waking up with your mind and body different than you remembered. Or maybe not even able to remember at all. They suppress a shudder. Is.. whenever they were called in to repair a bot, were they hurting them? None of the other bots ever seemed to react like that. But then again, if the mechanic had irreparably changed them, how would they know?

Their hands feel cold. They ought to turn down the AC. They replace their tools in all the labeled spots, very aware of the bot’s eyes on them as they place the kit back in its corner. The bot wants to feel pain even as xe dreams.. just to know that xe hasn’t been changed. Maybe ascribing sleep to someone that can’t sleep, let alone dream is presumptuous. But they understand fear. Being incapacitated around strangers is terrifying. They can’t imagine going unconscious only to wake with a different body entirely. Why would it be different for any sapient being? Why would they even assume it was? They spare a glance back to whumpee. Xis gaze is still riveted to them.

They swallow.

“Well,” they say, “It looks like you’re good to go. How are you feeling?”

Whumpee thinks for a few moments, before answering with what mechanic thinks is a smile in xis voice, “Achey,”
