Alleged last words of Luddite John Woodhead Booth, who did not give away the names of fellow conspirators. Booth, a 19-year-old apprentice tinner, son of the Reverend Booth of Kirkby-Malhamdale at Craven, was wounded in one of his legs, which had apparently been shattered by a musket ball. The post linked below suggests he did not say the words but does not question his courage. Tim Harford claims in an article in the Financial Times that Booth did not object to new machinery per se, but argued it "might be man's blessing instead of his curse if society were differently constituted", which suggests Booth was a very wise 19-year-old.

His girlfriend, Olive, doesn't know whether to stay or leave their relationship. Then there's his friend, Gabriel, who seems to have dropped out of school, joined the anti-war protests, and desperately wants to avoid getting drafted for Vietnam. One of the few films that actually comes close to capturing the American college experience of the late 60s-early 70s. "Drive, He Said" portrays this period with subtlety and nuance and a swift kick in the shorts when that's the only appropriate option. The entire cast deserves 5 stars but special praise should be reserved for Bruce Dern and Karen Black. William Tepper also excels as the lead capturing the mindset of a student-athlete during this tumultuous time. The anti-draft movement, the ambiguity of big-time college sports (while a war rages on), and the sexual revolution are challenging subjects but all converge seamlessly in Jack Nicholson's directorial debut. Who knows a good sports movie? There are the “usual suspects” - “Field of Dreams” with Kevin Costner, amongst others - but the problem with most of them is that they’re not really about the sports. They’re about something else, in many cases leadership. As in: new coach arrives to revive a demoralised team. You’ve seen that movie. This film, Robert Towne’s “Personal Best” (1982), has none of these flaws. His movie IS about the lives of athletes - how they train, compete, relate to each other on and off the track, suffer injuries that ruin their chances etc. Mariel Hemingway (@marielhemingway), the girl you know because she acted opposite Woody Allen in “Manhattan”, is fit enough to play the pentathlete who tries to get selected for the American Olympics team. The movie was written and directed by Robert Towne. Movie buffs recognise his name instantly: he wrote “Chinatown”, Roman Polanski’s masterpiece!
