Title page to The Anatomy of Melancholy (1921) by Robert Burton. ⠀ ⠀ 380 years ago today the great scholar Robert Burton passed away in his chambers at Christ Church, Oxford, rumoured to be the result of suicide by hanging. Burton's great masterpiece was The Anatomy of Melancholy, first published in 1621, a vast feat of scholarship examining in encyclopaedic detail that most enigmatic of maladies (and one from which he too often suffered). As it turns out, an entire section of his inexhaustible lifework is 'Of Witches and Magicians; How They Cause Melancholy'! By now, you may have gathered that I've not actually read Burton's almost one thousand five hundred page long treatise... [Enter:] the wonderful @devon_isadevon. I am delighted to share with you my latest blog post, filled with the beeitching, melancholic illustrations which Devon creates in response to Burton's epic. The piece is posted belatedly, and is actually intended to sit within my 🕯Horrible Histories🕯 series but, well you all know what happened round about then and the global time warp it created... Anyway, I now entirely understand Devon's obsession with Burton who is endlessly relevant (even when I ask him to be about witches), and I hope you will join me in obsessing over Devon's work too.
